  • Fidel Castro brought revolution to Cuba in 1959. But the country has been stuck between nostalgia and new beginnings ever since.
With its vintage cars and crumbling facades, Havana looks like it’s stuck in a time warp. But young Cubans are optimistic about the future, and material shortages make for inventiveness. To compensate for the lack of a reliable Internet, for example, they invented "El Paquete," an elaborate information network that stretched across the island thanks to portable hard drives. It brings the Bundesliga, telenovelas and US TV shows to even the most remote villages.
As the 1962 missile crisis finally fades into history, Cuba is slowly opening up. The owner of Havana’s most chic restaurant, "La Guarida," has reached a deal with some young architects: The profits from the restaurant will go towards restoring the old mansion it’s housed in. This kind of trade-off is increasingly common.
Our documentary shows a country caught between upbeat dreams for the future and nostalgic melancholy. It takes us from Havana to Santiago de Cuba, a city famous for its rum, to the Sierra Maestra mountains, steeped in revolutionary romance, and the white, sandy beaches in the north of the island.

I am cuban. It is an over simplification of the reality. Compare to other latin american countries it is safe, but it doesn't mean you can't get robbed and attacked, specially at night and if you are in the wrong place. And there is more violence, specially tape in the countryside. Again, lower than other places but it does exist.

Another great doc on the progression of the Cubans. I visited the country as a Canadian while Fidel was still in power. It was alot stricter. The cuban people are so warm and friendly, I loved them. Canadians were their biggest tourist population. Snowbirds would go and stay in Cuba for the winter. And the Musica was amazing. It's so unique, it's impossible to sit still when hearing it. The docs I've seen on Cuba available were so sad and downhearted to watch. So glad DW you get everywhere & so happy to see progress in Cuba. I have never forgotten the lovely, warm people I met there or the beautiful beaches. Thanks so much for this documentary. Canadians still visit Cuba and I will always have fond memories of my time with these happy, cheerful, wonderful people.❤😅

The Cuban passion and drive and their uncanny abilities to adapt as in the toyota motor transplanted into the cadillac, never fails to amaze me!! I find cuban musicians to be the best from the caribbean especially tbeir horn & pucussion players!! To think of 3 generations of that percussionits' family deeply entrenched in music is astounding. I can't even get my own sons to take interests in it farless for 3 generations and more. So many facinating aspects about Cuba, besides a crippled economy, who in their right mind wouldn't wish to live there? This far from the hayday of markist revolutionary ideals, isn't it high time the US intercede lifting their foolish trade embargo? What has it actually gained America these last 50 years or more? I started following to DW channel last month and really appreciate the lengths you have gone to, to produce this fabulous Cuban insight documentary. Fantastic job!!

@Al Person in my family's case it was through generations of hard work owning a local town pharmacy for over 100 years in my mothers side and in my fathers side 4 generations of doctors. What are you trying to imply? Castro stole it all and we still made a good life in USA. How about this, all those "rich" families who had everything stolen from them by Castro did pretty good in USA and are over 90% successful what do you say about that? Who in USA did they oppress? We got "rich" through hard work that is why regardless of our status we persevered. This is why Cubans today continue to live in the houses we built because our hard work still shines to this day nothing they can make can replace it. Communists are lazy scumbags.
The town my great grandfather was in was so poor that he was the only doctor in the town, sometimes people would pay him with apples and he would accept it. Again, what are you trying to imply? I conclude with this: Castro kicked the rich out of Cuba yet the poor in Cuba today are poorer today then before while Castro got rich and so did his family yet the bad guys are the capitalists who helped build the infrastructure that remains today.

"the formation of social classes in a society where everyone was supposed to be equal" Yep! Tends to happen when you introduce Capital Markets to a former planned economy. Once that happens, economic inequality tends to follow right behind. This is why Cuba has been trying to grow it's tourism market. It's future plans are to generate revenues by building a mixed economy that it can use to strengthen it's social safety nets to compensate for the adjustment brought about by the introduction of external markets.

      The “slums” are shown
      I’ve been there
Was in Havana for a month
There are definitely some poor areas but it’s not as bad as the American propagandists try to make you believe.
People are happy. People are poor and they want some amount of change, but America makes it out to be way different than it truly is. In addition, one of the reasons they have so much poverty and struggle is because America has embargos and blockades on their trade which devastates their economy. Just because American leaders have different views than Cuban leaders, they cause the Cuban people to struggle . It’s disgusting really.

It could change though, if the people gets rid of the Communist Party and the Marxists overlords who have stolen and oppressed them, and who have destroyed the economy and the society and the values to a very high degree.
