Cuba: The Past is Living Now

  • The year is 2014. Two old salts and me sail to Cuba with several cameras to document her as she breathes now before diplomatic relations inevitably alter this time-capsuled country forever. The reasons we fell in love with Cuba are the exact reasons why it will have to change since the influx of Yankees won’t want to drive a rented rusty sedan, stay in someone’s house or eat in someone’s living room like we did.

I stayed one month in Cuba two years ago. Standing near the old Spanish fort and seeing hundreds of American Fifties' cars running felt like being in the middle of an old Hollywood movie.

We loved Cuba in 2003. Finding somewhere to eat led me to using one of my pockets for leftover food to provide a snack for later. Music was wonderful, old buildings gorgeous even tho' badly in need of TLC. Would love to go there again - if COVID ever ends.

A beautifully done documentary and film. What a story your film has shown the world. Governments can invent systems but the soul of human beings shines forth and your film has shown just that condition. Thanks so much to you all for a great film and story.

Ive met someone who lives in Havana, weve fallen in love, as soon as this outbreak is over I will be in Havana. I never thought I would fall in love with someone that didnt live in my town much less my country. They are such amazing people, not tarnished like the rest of the world.

I sailed into the south of Cuba (Cayo Largo) aboard a Danish schooner in 1996, from there to Trinidad. Speaking some Spanish helped a lot to understand her people and their way of life. This is an excellent video to give you a slice of Cuban life and get a feel for the great Cuban soul and spirit. Go now to Cuba if you can and enjoy the innocence and genuine friendliness of her great folk.

Just read: I am going to talk about the blockade of the Castro dictatorship to the thirty articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The only blockade is the one that does not allow blacks to walk the streets of Cuba without being arrested 2 and 3 times a day, the blockade of the more than 100,000 Afro-Cubans in the 229 maximum and medium security prisons, and the 5 ,000 forced labor camps in the hands of the racist Cuban generals. In a country with a 65% black majority, all civil servants, ministers and generals are white.
The blockade of the dictatorship that pays in Cuban pesos and sells basic necessities in foreign currencies, in the stores of the military monopoly (GAESA), managed by the generals and the white racists of the central committee of the communist party. The blockade of freedom of expression, the freedom of all means of communication, multiparty elections, freedom of association, freedom of parties.
More than a thousand political prisoners, mostly Afro-Cubans. (among which are the 2 black leaders of the opposition in Cubana "Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maikel Castillo Pérez": winners of 2 Latin Gramis awards). The blockade that takes away the crops of Cuban peasants, the blockade of hospitals for tourists, the blockade that prohibits Cubans from being entrepreneurs in their own country, the blockade on imports from relatives who live abroad, the blockade on Cubans who are prohibited from fishing in the seas of their own nation, the blockade against Cubans who do not let them enter their own country and their own house just for demonstrating on social networks, the blockade of electricity that the dictatorship (in 63 years it never made capital repairs to the 8 power plants that electrify Cuba), the Blockade that evicts peasants from their homes and those who live around the cities.
The blockade of the military that sells international donations in their supermarkets in dollars for the Cuban people, the blockade of the Castro dictatorship to eat, the blockade of drinking water, the blockade of the Communist party to hospitals with hygiene, medicine and medical materials of quality (conditions that are excessive in hospitals, only for leaders of the communist party and complicit tourists. Like the "SIMEX" hospital and the "Cira García"). The blockage to the morale of a people who have to steal to cover their slightest need or simply eat.
We Cubans have been fleeing Cuba for 63 years from Apartheid, state terrorism and the permanent famine produced by communism. There are Cuban communities even in Ukraine, Yemen, Greenland, in the Sahara and in Antarctica. We Cubans stayed in the first country that the Plane landed. It does not matter if there is war, terrorism or pandemics. Any place in the Galaxy is better than Cuba, you will not die of hunger, State terrorism or apartheid like in Cuba.

who was in the Caribbean can compare all the islanders are ,shall we say, lazy , in no particular hurry... in Cuba, poverty is not as bad as in other Communist-free countries in the region. From huge pluses: very developed medicine, it is available to all, in all these slums there is a duty doctor of high class. Many Cuban doctors work abroad for foreign currency. High engineering training-the same Cuban engineers in great demand in many countries. We can laugh at their food cards, but in other countries it is not and there really people are hungry. There are no starving people in Cuba. And let's not forget about sanctions: after all, now the US has simply banned all trade with Cuba, only China and Russia are not afraid..in recent years, Cubans live under constant pressure - but do not lose heart: the Communists do not allow people to completely disappear,if such severe sanctions would be in any other island, there would be a long time all rested. And Cubans are the most cheerful and positive people in the world. In addition, there is a complete lack of crime at the domestic level..safe at any time of the day. In Jamaica or Barbados in the evening it is better not to walk

You stoked my imagination. As an American living in Switzerland, I am truly privileged (economically). My (Greek) colleague took a trip to Cuba, but as an American, I never thought to go. As I grow older, I search for the possibility to slow down. In CH, we have a "slow food" movement which means that which is grown naturally (a 1 year-old Swiss Cheese holds much more flavor than the same variety that is 6 months old). But otherwise, we are increasingly pressured by an interconnected world (downward wage pressure). I love that you have responded to many of your commenters. I love the two old guys that you found to share your journey!! Really, in this time of Corona and Protest, was the best thing I've seen on UA-cam this year. How do you climb the mast of that boat???? Thank you.

Thank you so much for watching! Interesting to hear about your new-found culture. Yup, the two gentlemen were the ones who were kind enough to take me along, ha! Climbing the mast is easy. You sit in a harness (seat) and tie it to a halyard and have the boys hoist you like a sail. :-D

Just wanted to say I enjoyed your Video, You should go back I think if you did you would be more relaxed ? There is never a need to hide being an American in Cuba. For most Cubans America is their dream and they want to be your friend. You see the American flag as a fashion statement in Cuba. I have seen more US flags in Cuba then I do in my home town. You might consider hiring a local as a guide for a few days. Not because you get lost or anything but to see life from a Cubans view.

David Seminatore yes, I have been back twice since making this video. I was just there in feb 2017 actually. Just a few weeks ago. People are certainly friendly to Americans. Our money is green! In terms of talking to tourists about their economy/politics though, it seemed I got a bit farther with Canadian, but really, they won't talk to anyone about those things even today. They really can get into serious trouble. This last trip I went diving in the Bay of Pigs and as always, stayed with locals. Guides will only show you their cousin's restaurant, is what I have found in the past. That being a metaphor of sorts... their uncle's farm, their brother's house, etc. there are probably some great guides if that's your style! I personally like to get lost sometimes.

I'm Cuban and left in 67, thanks God I left before it got worse, cubans in the island today live a indigenous primitive life, Cuba has return to an age which Cuba has never experienced, even the natives which where all killed buy the Spaniards lived a better life style, at least the natives culture was a total different culture than what Cubans have been living since castro took over, at least it was natural for them, not for the Cubans.

Wonderful documentary for those of us who love the sea and the people of Cuba. You showed a well balance blend of the positives and negatives of life in Cuba. Well done and God bless. BTW Matanzas which is right outside of Varadero has the largest natural harbour in the Caribbean and was once the favorite port for pirates looking for a hideout.
