One thing to mention, when putting the new belt in, it needs to go with a certain side facing in, certain side facing out, and should not twist at any point. I made both of these mistakes and ended up having a deck that was shaking when running, tore it apart again and figured this out.
Both…. Some of the pulleys are flat and some are grooved. Lay the belt out straight and start with flat pulley on flat end of belt and wind it thru, if correct all the flat sides of the belt will meet the flat pulleys and all the grooved sides will meet the grooved pulleys, without twisting the belt

Watch this video carefully My mower deck problem was solved with deductions and process of elimination from this video. Thanks goes out to Johnson's for this video. The issue as an installer error - and I am the installer. The error: The three spindle pulleys on the 48 inch D-140 mower deck are not symmetrical. I mounted the three new spindle pulleys upside down! That caused the belt to be about 1/2 inch too low across the back of the mower deck and rub on the rear mounting points - that destroyed the belt in a couple minutes. I realized my mistake, flipped over the three pulleys and the problem was solved with the addition of a new Kevlar wrapped belt. The three idler and guide pulleys are symmetrical and doesn't make a material difference which side is up. Again thanks to Johnson's!
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Not a problem. Just now dropped deck on this john deere d140. Took me 2 minutes and without you posting that video I probably would've considered buying a new mower vs replace bearings on my own.

First of all, Very detailed and concise. Great video. I just replaced my belt today in my D140. But after getting everything completed, it seems like the belt is slipping. The blades will finally turn but as soon as there is any resistance the blades just don’t turn and the belt is getting really hot. Besides the tension pulley on the deck, how can I adjust this? Or what did I do wrong?
I always wonder why the belt broke or why you need to install a new one. That being said make sure you double check to make sure all is good with your pulleys and blade bearings and double check the belt is running around all pulleys properly. Did you purchase a genuine John Deere belt? If you have a aftermarket belt it may not be correct.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Mower is 6 years old. Had some chunks out of the existing belt. Figured it was time for a new one while I had it off to sharpen the blades. Everything went back on perfectly. I triple checked the belt to make sure the flat aside of the belt was on the flat pulleys and tapered side was around the tapered pulleys and the pulley coming from the engine. Soon as I’d run it in the grass it wouldn’t cut blades would stop and belt was hot as all get out from just rubbing on the pulleys.

excellent video - it was great to see how fast the belt can be changes and the deck off and on again so quickly. the video is about the best that i have seen in my repair quest, After years of use of my 48 inch Deere with D140 tractor, the idler pulleys finally went bad with one of the small ones actually seizing. I rebuilt the deck with all new spindles, spindle pulleys, blades, belt and the three idler pulleys. However the new belt was immediately (30 seconds) torn up. I suspect that I over tightened the idler pulley nut(s) and that is the issue to try to solve.

Good, clear video. My belt went on fine, but needs some adjustment. Do you have a video on adjusting a belt on this type of deck, ie, a deck WITHOUT a cable adjustment? Thanks!
Great video! Thanks for making it. I get the belt on but it keeps coming off as soon as I engage the blades. I confirmed the belt isn’t twisted and follows the correct path. Any suggestions? I wonder if I have a bad pulley?
Check the belt guides to make sure the guides are in correct position and the belt is running correctly. Check your belt covers are on correct. You may also want to purchase a new belt. It sounds like your belt guides are not working for you.

I bent the guides with a wrench because I couldn't get the pulleys off of a couple pulleys and then bent them back (although not perfectly). Do you see a problem with that?
As long as the belt doesn’t fall out between the pulley and the guide when the parking brake is on, meaning when the belt is in the non tension position, it should be ok.
