  • Climate Change Minister Simon Watts has outlined the government's climate strategy and its five pillars at an event in Auckland.
Watts said the three-page strategy was a "comprehensive" and "ambitious" plan. It aimed to reduce the impacts of climate change and prepare for its future effects.
"The strategy is built on five core pillars and underscores the government's commitment to delivering on our climate change goals," Watts said.

These guys are not serious. This is the loosest use of the word strategy I have ever heard. This is like the Allblacks saying their strategy has five pillars. Tackle good, Pass good, Kick good, Run good and Scrum good. Clowns!

We are already a low emission economy. We are being taken advantage off because we are supposedly first world economy, while third world highly industrial economies get subsidies. We should not have to harmonize or appease offshore control freaks who want to carbon colonize our country.

@stringfish100, you nailed it! The sun's a huge player in our climate game.
      Methane and CO2 Breakdown
      Methane's Limited Impact:
Even though methane packs a punch, its overall impact is much smaller than CO2. This is because there's way less methane out there compared to CO2. Science backs this up, showing that methane's effect on global warming is relatively minor.
      CO2 Saturation:
CO2's greenhouse gas effect hits a limit at current levels. Adding more CO2 won't warm things up much more but could help plants grow better and boost food production.
      Climate Data and Trends
      Heatwave History:
Believe it or not, the early 1900s, especially the 1930s, saw hotter extremes than recent years. Since 2005, data shows no big jump in high temperatures, hinting at natural climate swings.
      Greenhouse Gases and Natural Factors:
Water vapor is the big player in the greenhouse gas world. Human-made CO2 is just a small slice, and methane, despite being strong, is in such tiny amounts it hardly makes a dent.
      Volcanic Impact:
Big eruptions like Mount Tambora in 1815 cooled the planet, proving natural events can sway the climate significantly. Plus, long-term sea levels have been pretty steady, countering fears of drastic rises.
      The Sun's Role
      Solar Activity and Cycles:
The sun, our main energy source, drives many climate changes. Its activity cycles and the Earth's orbit and the moon's pull all contribute to natural climate shifts.
      Thermodynamic Perspective:
Climate change is about complex energy processes. Historic events show that while abrupt changes can occur, long-term shifts are more about overall energy budgets than just CO2.
      Regulatory Reassessment
      Net Zero Policies:
Aiming for net zero by 2050 is a hefty goal with big economic and social costs. It could disrupt everything from energy to farming, straining resources and potentially harming the economy.
      Fossil Fuels and Food:
Fossil fuels are key for fertilizers that boost food security. More CO2 might actually help crops, suggesting fossil fuels still have an essential role.
      Conclusion
@stringfish100, you're spot on about the sun's major role in climate change. Focusing only on CO2 and methane misses the bigger picture. Natural factors like solar activity and volcanic eruptions are crucial, and pushing for net zero emissions could cause more harm than good. 🌞🌱

@@adamblack267 I have no clue who first sold us on the idea that we could somehow control naturally occurring weather, extreme weather, or that we could somehow tie in disasters like earthquakes and rising sea levels, which are clearly eons away.
I mean, I won't see it, you won't see it, and our grandkids' grandkids won't see it.
Yet, the climate change narrative keeps hitching all this to our net-zero obligations. Remember Al Gore? The guy wasn’t even qualified, yet he made a movie full of hot air and raked in millions, and now we all bow to this nonsense.
Meanwhile, the whole world is bending over backward except China, Russia, and many others, while polar bears are having a population boom, NASA says the planet is getting greener, and fewer people are dying from weather-related issues and heat in the last 20 years than ever.
Yet, the media continues to push this doomsday climate narrative, and the greenies are laser-focused on it instead of real issues like microplastics, mining damage, and water pollution.
So, are we all stuffed? Or have we just lost track of what's real and what's fake?

Future Predictions: Long-term solar activity cycles influence climate, indicating that future climate predictions must account for these natural factors. Projections suggest a stable influence of solar activity on climate over the next 50 to 60 years, with no dramatic changes expected.
Contrary to the CO2-Centric Narrative: Physics reveals that at current levels, around 420 ppm, CO2's effectiveness as a greenhouse gas is significantly diminished. This saturation effect means further increases in CO2 will not lead to catastrophic global warming or extreme weather events. Instead, any additional warming would be minimal and potentially beneficial.
Impact of Net Zero Emissions Policies: Efforts to reduce CO2 emissions to net zero by 2050 are projected to have an insignificant impact on global temperatures. Technical reports indicate that achieving net zero emissions in the U.S. would reduce temperatures by only 0.015°F, and worldwide efforts would yield a reduction of 0.13°F. These trivial changes come at enormous economic and social costs.

point zero four of atmospheric carbon is the 'man made' component of Co2 . Climate change is a natural phenomenon and man just has to adapt, not arrogantly postulate that we can stop, or even lesson it's impact on a changing world. let's just agree to work towards adaption rather than pay senseless carbon credits while other Countries continue to pump out carbon by producing the needed goods of an ever advancing cavillation.

Plenty of data that shows CO2 goes up and down as does temperature and C02 is good for plants. @kersim8365 Nice @kersim8365, thank you for your comment! It’s refreshing to encounter someone with a brain around here. If only our politicians had the same. We’ve got plenty of well-qualified scientists, some who’ve even worked for the IPCC and never denied climate change, yet they’re telling us that net-zero is a pipe dream.
Seriously, what the heck is the perfect CO2 level and temperature anyway? Personally, I love a warm, sunny day where I can bask in the sun, and by afternoon, it’s perfect for taking my shirt off and going for a swim. But hey, I also enjoy winter and ice skating by a hot fire.
Shifting gears, many scientists like Will Happer, Judith Curry, Richard Lindzen, Marc Morano, Carl-Otto Weiss, Valentina Zharkova, Christopher Essex, Henrik Svensmark, Patrick Moore, Ross McKitrick, Willie Soon, Susan Crockford, Peter Ridd, and Christopher Monckton are out there telling us the real story.
Yet, we keep bowing to politicians who are about as qualified as a potato and journalists who seem to have forgotten the scientific method in favor of believing in predictions.

Simon Watts is a smart man. I think his main goal is saying some words about climate issues to make it look like the coalition had some considerations for it. The frantic turmoil at the center of the coalition policy machine has hardly a second thought for sustainable future. I am reminded of the comparison of Nicky Kay and Jacinda Ardern during the Key years. They were very much interested in the same issues and stood in the same electorates. Kay was never going to be supported by her party to progress those agendas and never achieve very much, Ardern went on to do great things.
I enjoyed this clip, In the lead up to the election he was debated by James Shaw. I think James cleans up. ua-cam.com/video/CqJymksCKhw/v-deo.html
