  • Italian citizenship applications, particularly those by descent or marriage, can face bureaucratic delays beyond legal processing times. The 'diffida' acts as a crucial mechanism to encourage consulates and the Ministry of Interior to expedite their decisions. This formal notice demands prompt action within a set deadline and warns of potential legal repercussions for non-compliance. Although it is not commonly necessary, the 'diffida' is particularly effective for overcoming delays in citizenship through marriage cases, highlighting the importance of proactive measures in ensuring the efficient processing of Italian citizenship applications. In this episode of the Italian Citizenship Podcast, hosted by Italian attorney, Marco Permunian, and dual citizen expat Podcaster, Rafael Di Furia, cover the strategic use of 'diffida' to navigate through and resolve the prolonged wait times in the Italian citizenship application process.

    When a consulate waits the full 2 years, only to give follow-up homework (Miami trend right now), do they have another 2 years (4 yrs total) to approve or deny the application from there?

    Is this the same process you would use if you can't get an appointment at the consulate and wanted to go through the court system in Italy?

      Or, could you use this process if you are unable to obtain a consulate appointment?

      I have the same issue. I’ve been working with ICA since 2001 and they have been brilliant with getting the documents ready, but now it’s impossible to get an appt. , after more than six months of trying daily! And, seems minor case could be an issue. I’ve heard Philadelphia is holding applications that involve the minor issue until a decision is made. Would love to see a video about that from you both. Great job!

    Hello. I applied for Italian citizenship about 30 years ago, but I never got a passport and I don’t remember if I ever received a confirmation. Do you know how I can check if I am an Italian citizen?

    I was told when I applied for my little baby's passport in November 2023 here in the UK that it would take 6 months. This I find a bit strange....as normally a little baby's passport is quicker than an adult's.

    Another unrelated issue.. I hear that documents have to be certified 6 months old or less.. how is that actually possible with the long wait times?

    • @bethb5915
      @bethb5915 3 місяці тому

      They can't be more than 6 months old *at the time you submit your application*. I don't think this is new. For instance for background checks: that's always been the case to make sure you haven't committed a crime after you got the background check done, so they limit it to within 6 months.

      @@bethb5915it still doesn't seem possible because.. it takes a year to get the documents together on average.. I would think that over 90% are no compliant..

      @@JohnCash001- yes, it takes some coordination, but it's possible. I think only certain documents have to be within 6 months.

    Far too long and many will just decide that it's not worth the time and aggravation. Shame really.

    When the citizenship process takes too long I leave my 7-figure American life savings back in the States to compound in its current tax efficient investments. Arrivederci 😂
