A couple years ago, I bought an Audi TT for my partner. Her father took me to pick it up and we loved it immediately. He passed later that day and we were left with this car that he had been the only other person in the passenger seat. The last couple years I've fixed up many of the very tiny issues. I don't have the convertible but the 180 with auto transmission and a bit of work under the hood, new stereo, bunch of modern upgrades. Everything about this car is something I've grown to love and it's created more memories than any car I've owned previously. Absolutely beautiful diamond in the rough I'd say with a little tlc.
I just got rid of my Mk1 TT to get a Range Rover Sport, and to be honest... I really miss it!!
I held my breath during your silence before you mentioned the MX-5 ;o). It's an obvious choice for a cheap convertible. I have an NB Sport at the moment and it's such a laugh to drive. I think the TT would be much quicker though and more comfortable, as well as having a nicer interior. It's so nice that you can be spoilt for choice with a grand in your pocket, haha!

My dad had the 3.2 V6 with the DSG, oh I miss that car. I remember hearing it starting up every morning, still miss it to this day.
That was a great engine! Miss the old times! I remember a roadtrip with a BMW Z3 2,8i! So much fun!
How does the TT 1.8 compare against the SLK230 R170 or the 1st gen Z3 1.8 in terms of reliability, build quality, fuel economy and fun factor?
I would take the TT with 1.8T any day. The materials feel better quality and the car better put together. It’s more fun to drive than the slk, and I dare to say even the Z3 since its so much better built. I drove over 200k km with the 1.8T engine with only regular oil changes. That engine was used in a bunch of VW Group cars and was very good. It even sounds good for a 4 cylinder. Lastly, for fuel economy, it’s definitely not worse than the other two. If you really want an SLK, get a Chrysler Crossfire, same car, half price, equally bad. Hope this helps.

I have an Audi TT coupe 2006 1.8 turbo.. which is far sexier than a convertible. Mark 1 is the classic..to be honest I go the shops and come back to the car park and what looks the best car there? Mine, it's a classic. Big thing to watch out for. Timing belt and water pump yes..but engine mounts nuts come loose..then your engine falls out..seriously. The retro styling is superb..mines only just done 40,000 miles from new.
Looks like the whole car is in good nick for the mileage , well done .
I have the coupe AWD 2002 down in OZ 83000km one owner had it for 4 years no major issues .
Yes the dash pod is cactus impossible to repair in OZ , pix a bit , but the temp gauge moves about a bit , but temp is always around 85 to 90 c , fuel gauge is always full , i reset the odometer at each fill and drive to 400km and refill no big deal when you easily get 650km per tank .
Good servicing on time helps with these cars for reliability , timing belt every 90,000km , haldex is important too .
My other car is a GTI Clubsport , but i still do love to drive the TT especially out on the B roads , its a heavy dog in the city with a stiff shifter , heavy clutch .

I've been struggling to decide on a newer car, so going to get a cheap one of these for the summer and buy a newish car in the winter and use it for trade in.

You need to be mechanically savvy to have the mgf or tf or you can have big garage bills.
Love the content, just bought myself one the other day a Japanese import no less. Silver with a black roof. 180 BHP manual cost me 2700euro so in today’s money with inflation not bad nct and taxed, its a bit of cheap summer fun.
The original TT is already a classic. And I don't like Audi. It's such a great design. Much like the A2 of the same era. Get one of those to review if you can!
I think you are being a tad disingenuous about the Roadster. It’s an absolute icon . I had a new 225 back in 2003 and I wish I had never sold it! It was a superb quick reliable car, built to an amazing standard and if you want a pristine low mileage example you will have to part with 10k or more. The 225 especially is getting difficult to find in great condition these days. I know I have been looking . As with all 20 year old cars the devils in the detail. If you pay a grand for a car you are going to pay and pay and… infinitum! Better to get a really good one if so inclined towards this timeless reference.

Thought it was just me with all the shaking etc I have the 225 changed the 18” wheels for the original 17” fat fives drives far better now.
I bought a MX5 a pile of rust . TT wins hands down .
Still looks modern.
2:04 Audi was so ahead of progressive design. They completely let go of 70's, 80's, and 90's designs. Their designs were and still are built for the future.
Thats the sign of a great design. Still looks contemporary and relevant 20 years later
Would love to have one of these in that pretty metallic green with brown or beige interior someday. I always thought it would be a fun experiment to combine one of these with a solid body but dead engine with a salvage Golf or Jetta (Bora) TDi.
1, Watch out for haldex issues on quattros, haldex oil, filters & labour are expensive. And 2 they eat coil packs, keep two spare In the car,
I think they also have suspension problems they start clanking knocking if am not mistaken
Anything with 130k on the clock can have worn out suspension components. Its not a serious issue to have fixed though
Mines special had it 3 years stage 1 remap and never had a coil pack or maf sensor fail.
Great video. Purchased my TT 225 as my second car on the same date (11.03.2019) as u posting this video! We got the same thinking why not MX5, but in Hong Kong, police hate JDM cars and easily pulled over by them...and TT has more power, quattro and is slightly cheaper than a MX5 which makes me to choose TT at last

I managed to pick one of these up for scrap value of a friend as an MOT failure about 150 notes.. Few hours of my time and about a hundred quid in parts, it passed and I love it. Don't even care when my mates call me a hairdresser! People who scoff are just people who haven't driven one!!

There is nothing at wrong with a MG TF now. Any s/h TF will have had HGF by now and had an uprated gasket on it. Not only are they nicer to drive, but better value for money, much more of a future classic (they are now holding their value and even starting to increase a little) and actually quite reliable! I have one as a 4th car for those occasional sunny days and I can't fault it.
I've subscribed now. So I expect to see an MGTF vs MX5 vs MR2 vs TT shoot out - all cars have to cost the same though.... :)
I’ve come from a TF to a TT 225 and the TF can’t hold a candle to the TT in terms of performance, the interior is light years better than a TF too.
TF’s feels fragile in comparison
3 years on and the TF can still be had for not much money privately. The dealers will never sell for what they want.
Everyone bleats on about the head gaskets on the K series engine (MGF etc). We’ve had 3 series 1 Lotus Elise over the years, the first being brand new when they were launched. We never had an issue with any regarding the head gasket. We used them too! The last one we had we took to Spain on the ferry and drove back to the UK through France. Might be luck of the draw or might be some amount of fact enhanced by urban myth.
Pleased to hear it! All used cars will have some issues. It all depends on how they're looked after. I have had lots more K series engines with head gaskets blown than not, but like you say, its not every single one
I doubt that they had the same head gasket kits then. I've had 3 MGFs and all had HGF.

What u need to know is they need timing belt n water pump done about every 30,000 miles not 80,000 to be on the safe side. Haldex oil change..also very hard to work on ..not easy i think you said...eg..to change a front light bulb..how long???? Well you have to undo very hard to get to ( on a mark 1 2006) screws under wheel arch n take the whole front of car off...2 to 3 hours ...i know..its a joke. Hazard lights go...they feel well made but have losts of problems...the biggest being the engine mount bolts shear...engine falls down!!!!! £600.. TO FIX..IM NOT KIDDING...ON THE PLUS SIDE..LOVELY INTERIOR N EXTERIOR STYLING..LOOKS BETTER THAN MOST CARS IN A CAR PARK. A EX CONDITION COUPE 2006 FULL SERVICE HISTORY FROM DEALER WILL SET YOU BACK 5 TO 6K....THATS NOW IN 2019...VERY LOW ORIGINAL MILEAGE 39 TO 44,000. BUT ITS GOT TO BE SUPERB...HIGH MILEAGE ARE ANTHING FROM 2 TO 4K....I THINK THE CONVERTIBLES ARE A BIT GIRLY..BUT THE COUPES..GOOD FIR ANY MAN...HAA

bargain of the year , me thou just got to go for something bigger like a 6 series BMW with the v8 loverly soundtrack on a hot summers day with the top down , i know your gona say ,expensive to buy and run in comparison but its worth it if you can afford it
Any way back to the TT its a belting little car for the money buy the best you can afford and drive it and feel like a king in the summer

I bought a silver 225 roadster in February for £1,500 and now drive it more than my 2016 A3. It’s a beautifully retro car that makes a great noise and is great fun to drive, especially down country lanes in the sunshine.
I didn't realise that I had company while watching this till I heard my wife say, "I really like that"......oh well......lovely car btw.
My ex-girlfriend was always complaining about me watching car videos. Maybe that's one of many little aspects why I "kicked" her!;-)
Sorry for commenting on everything, however if its something Ive driven the vids always grab my attention. Even if only for a day test drove one of these when my mate wanted to trade in his cooper s in 2008. Was a silver 05 225 bhp version. Remember the huge lag and banging through the 6 speed manual box out of cuiriosity to 70 odd from standstill and how it felt quick but certainly not fast. Totally agree on the wooly handling this was based on a mk4 golf chassis. These tts were stylish though and solid inside. Especially compared to an slk of the time.
I've had a 225 and a 3.2 (both coupes) and both are great cars. Imo the 225 felt faster but the 3.2 with the dsg gearbox was probably the smoothest car I've ever driven once rolling (look out for the delay of death when pulling away). Clutch pedal failure is a common fault in manuals along with dashpods in all of them. Cambelts need to be done every 40k not 80 in the 1.8's and mechatronic failures in dsg boxes are quite common and costly to repair. Haldex history is also a must have with documented proof of regular oil changes. Washer aliens in higher spec TT's (typically 225's and 3.2's) are also common failures along with coilpacks. Interiors usually stand the test of time and there are only a few rust areas (drainage channels). Annoyingly (with the exception of coilpacks) the most common faults were the subject of recalls in most countries around the world but not so in the uk. Great little cars and still very stylish bearing in mind their age. I would buy another in a heartbeat if I had the funds.

I owned a 1.8 225 coupe, which was good fun. I’m 6’3” and a bit of a lump but there was plenty of room, the interior was very solid, everything worked as it should (apart from the well known temperature gauge miss-read), the Bose speakers sounded lovely and in a couple of years ownership all that failed was a coil pack, again a fairly common fault. The one thing I would be critical of was RUST, have a damn good look underneath before you buy one!
Although the 225 version is quick, with a few quid spent wisely it can be made really quite fast indeed. The BAM engine is a bit of a legend, apparently.

Andy,bloody great cars I've had 2 which both suffered with water ingress as I have a sloping drive. Bought a trombone brush to.clear the drainage channels but could never find the holes to pull the brush through to clear them.Took the car to Mazda Swindon who didn't have a clue.... so reluctantly got rid..
I have a 2003 coupe 225. 150000 on the clock and still immaculate. Change the oil (quality not rubbish) every 6 months and spark plugs every 12 along with air and cabin filter and you’ll be fine. Don’t bother with a garage for the Haldex. Jack up the rear. Axle stands underneath and DIY. The oil you can get direct from an Audi dealership or eurocarparts using a discount code for around £18 and comes in a tube the same as bath sealant. Drain the old oil and when you’re ready bang in the new oil and quickly refit the drain plug. Done in 5 minutes. Filter every 2 years but you need an L shaped spanner costing around £10-15 on eBay. They can be a bugger to get off and on but quite an easy job.

I had a mk1 TT roadster and i use to treat it like it was a Ferrari 😂, now i drive the mk3 tt roadster ttrs what a car, i love TTs so good looking sport cars and the mk1 still looks amazing after 20 years!!

Just bought a 2001 TT Turbo convertible for $5,500 US unbelievable condition, runs great..center dash control you can't read but the rest is spot on. It's an 18 year old toy and I love it

There isn’t a £1000 TT for sale in the UK. So god knows how this is possible. Maybe as a trader you lid a grand for it as a p/x, but no way can John Q Public but one for that.
This may be one of the best cars you can buy, period. Virtually bullet proof.
I got a 2005 z4 2.5 last summer was some really good fun in the sun but compared to other convertibles the z4 are most likely the best choice. I found that out after months of research.
Yeah, I've got a 2005 Z4 2.5 too and have had it for nearly 6 years now and it's been great. No major issues, had to replace two worn rear shock absorbers and - at the last MOT - a rear brake line was corroded. Not bad for a 14 year old car with 105,000 on the clock. Want to replace it but not sure what with. It's such a simple car, not too much to go wrong. Might be a Boxster next time round. Or another Z4.

Watching this old video it shows how crisp your delivery is now. You're still sorta the same in this video. I'm seriously thinking of a mx5 c and watched this to see what the competition was like and you've confirmed the mazda is the one. Copper red. 2l manual. Maybe hardtop but not sure.
Enjoying this until the crack about the MGTF. I've had two MGF's and One TF. yes the head gasket is a pain but not every time you turn the key. Once done its done and they are great cars. My F easily bettered our TT 225 and a recent excursion in a rust bucket called an SLK R170 also confirmed how nice Gerry Mcgoverns design was given MG Rover's limited resources.

The Mx5 is made for old divorced man /maybe multiple divorcee/ with confidence issues, or a young guy at age of 17-18 /not so tall/ to enjoy if its possible to enjoy one.. Audi TT was and is one of those future proof look with over all impressive look/performance.quality. Good review as always.

Only ever sold 3 of them my self all being the 225hp all 3 had the same old faults. The last 1 needed a new 3rd gear never again from BCA auctions.
Only thing what does me is the front wheel drive, it means nothing but could mean so much.

This has to be a car swapped in at a dealer you deal with and they just needed to move it on quickly, £1,000!?! I know you can’t truly see any rough bits on the car in the video and it’s obviously been cleaned but it looks ridiculous value. Another good video btw. 👍🏼

may i ask why you prefer 150hp 2wd over the 225 quattro? did you test both? or just because of the price?
The 225 Quattro is the best, but the 150bhp 2wd is good enough if you're on a tight budget. I've had plenty of 225's and there's nothing wrong with them, it was purely a price thing :)
Ideal summer purchase that. You could drive it until August, sell it and break even!!!?!!

MX-5 or TT? I had an MX-5 & really enjoyed it, dead easy to drop & raise the roof. Had the roof down a lot (not just sunny days) but at that age I'd & price I'd go for the Audi

If you read the reviews by people who have driven a mr2 roadster. It is by far in their opinion a better and more precise drive than an mx5. More of a purists car I guess. Nice video.

Nice example for only a grand. Always wanted one. Unfortunately you can’t find one in my area of the states, for less than 3 grand USD. Even worse…99% of them are thrashed to the point of being a bag of nails…much like the WRX. Actually you can say that about a lot of potentially nice vehicles. The average U.S. driver just wants to gas em up and zoom. I guess we’ve become a disposable product society. I see some great cars that are now sadly late for the crusher. Enjoyed your video… thanks.
Just bought the 225bhp 2001 TT quattro S-Line very fast and race like full service history 127,000 miles MOT till November not much advisory on last MOT new brake pads needed hopefully got a steal and a get a good year or two out it
Just seen this obviously 3 yrs too bloody late… and can’t believe you only paid a grand for it… sod the scuttle… any one in their right mind would put up with that for that kind of price, and for many that’s all part of the fun. It would be great taking it out with the roof down on the Buxton to Leek road imo one of the UK’s most scenic routes and I’m from Wiltshire. Always look forward and enjoy your reviews

Me and the misses had a red quotro a few yrs ago , and you could drive it round the twisty lanes with some gust , it was planted , great little car, was given a front wheel drive newer version and it’s handling was not as good and understeered if you pushed it m cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧

I'm looking at a 2005 TT with the 3.1(?)L vr6 engine. Should I buy it? It's around $6,000. Also, any tips on maintaining/restoring it? Is the 1.8 good enough to actively look out for over the vr6? Thanks.
I'm not sure. The V6 sounds nicer and has more horse power, but it doesn't make the car that much quicker. They can have timing chain issues, but they don't all suffer from that. Its the luck of the draw I guess (like any used car). If you can find a nice one with good maintenance records, you should be fine
What's wrong with the 1.8 Turbo BAM engine at 225BHP? With off the shelf/ebay parts these engines can be tuned to near 400BHP without stresses. The TT should never have had the V6 option.

I have a ex condition 180hp tt 2006 mark 1....its only done 37k miles. Full service history...worth 5grand... timing belt needs doing on tt anout every 30,000 miles..haldex oil change....great looking...info cluster can go...mines fine..also they never rust....keep low mileage to get decent money back. They are classic looking.....nice cars....watch engine mount bolts...they can shear off....but overall reliable cars.
isn't there an eye watering 1 piece exhaust on TT's
MR2 handles better and is way more reliable.
You don't need a lot of horsepower, because above 60 mph with all convertibles you need ear defenders, as there is a serious amount of decibels.

Haha - MX5! I've owned both a TT and an MX5 when they were new (not at the same time) The 225 bhp quattro was very fast in its day and was completely immune to weather. Grip was great and it felt solid, but the steering was rather inert. Luckily it was under warranty as they had various teething troubles with failed electronics, leaking fuel tanks, cracked windscreens and failed coil packs (all of which should be ancient history for the surviving cars). The MX5 had more delicate handling, a bit less room and was a bit less refined - but was just as much fun and the manual roof was just as easy to use as the TT's electric one. Both of mine had the optional Bose stereos - the TT was excellent, the MX5 was so-so. Both great cars, but the TT is poaaibly more car for your money these days?
Nice cars. BUT for the 1k mark I'd look for an SLK230, V6 engine and much quicker. Slightly more dated than the TT though and they do rust to shit. But if you're spending one grand then nothing beats a convertible V6 Mercedes Benz!
I have a 180 quattro that has stage1, more power and awd is fun, paid 2k for it 2 years ago and its been a peach.
I have always had a soft spot for the TT roadster, but it would be MX5 every time for me coss they are so much more engaging.
