To give you a slight understanding: in this riff (riffs are just cool outstanding guitar parts in a song) you can either: play each string on its own, so you only get the tone from that string (the easy way) OR you can play all strings at once, but mute the ones you don't want to hear (difficult). To mute a string you just have touch it with your skin a bit, but not enough to press it down because then it would make a sound. Doesn't sound too complicated in theory, in praxis it's lots of finger acrobatics
This strumming technique is used in a lot of Frusciante’s work with RHCP. I’d argue this song is a great way to practice it because it is relatively easy. Interesting take, but I’d have to say Snow is much more difficult

It is indeed a really hard riff to play because both the left and right hand are very advanced. The left in terms of muting. The right in terms of rhythm. There’s still some ways to go with both here like you said. But one thing you can fix right away: he uses the bridge pickup not the neck. A small thing: In the bit where you say “you’re probably playing it like this”, you played an extra bass note when in your tab above - which is correct - it does’t include it. But when you play your best effort the amount of bass notes is correct again. The main thing though is there are a lot of muted strums and John hits all six strings constantly. Once you get that, you’ll get a lot closer to the riff.
He was literally on a cover of Rolling Stone with John Mayer, and Derek Trucks as “The New Guitar Gods” hahaha RHCP is my favorite band, he gets plenty of accolades and praise

Love the brian may red special replica in the background
This video is sick asf 🔥🔥🔥
This one is definitely tricky. Playing it live and singing the backup vocal lines over it during the verses took quite a bit of practice.
I love the BMG on the back wall
The stamina you need to play snow at the same speed over and over and over made it harder for me
I always thought the same. Snow is mainly endurance. Can't stop has more techniques that is incorporated into the song
Well done!
The second way is exactly how I would play it by accident
There's a lot of work like this, think it's simple until you start listening properly or have access to the sheets then it changes completely.
Swing that whole arm and put some feel into it man !
I never noticed that, but now it's kind of makes sense. The first version sounds almost mechanical like a synthesizer. The second version with the strumming has a bit more funk.
Nicely played
That “minimalism”… john is a genius.
Facts. I use this all the time to help students with left hand muting. Once they can play it, it helps fix so many “noise” issues.
‘I could die for you’
Go ahead and look up the chords for that song. Still haven’t mastered that song on account of the shapes alone. Playing almost 20 yrs.
Trickiest part of can’t stop for beginners is precise muting with the left hand. Learned it when I was in ~8th grade and the style fascinated me. Mastering can’t stop will open up a lot of possibilities for applying the same technique to Hendrix, SRV, and any funk and funk rock.
He's a great guitar player and he was almost kicked out for good, but I'm glad they're all back together and going strong and doing well and their music is still better than ever.
It's not their hardest riff but it's out there. I never had problems with it. Let's not forget that the band is considered a "funk rock", so John is playing within the funk style where you have to mute some of the notes.
this is so true. I learned the riff by ear and played it crap at first. But you can hear how aggressively frusciante is playing it in the recording and it's like "ohhh... he's strumming all the strings" suddenly, it becomes a whoooooole hell of a lot more difficult. Personally I mute with my index and move my middle finger around (except i think for the tonic note/the first bit, where i play with index finger on the a and mute the rest of the strings through the first time through, since muting the e is easy enough while playing on the a string)
I thought everyone knew that I’ve never been able to play can’t stop😂
Yup it’s all in the right hand and that guitarist is talented
Even I could tell the difference right away. Great video!
Stilll playing snow hey oh endurance playing that super fast riff that long and every note is ridiculously hard
I can play can’t stop perfectly, but I’ve been working on snow for years
Watched this video, went downstairs, learned this by ear in less than five minutes. It honestly didn't seem difficult. But I like to play muted notes a lot so maybe that's part of it.
use youre thumb to mute and hit the base notes and youre golden. its actually easier then how other people try to play it. i learned 98% of the rhcp songs john was on and a lot of his solo stuff as well and this is how john plays a lot his music.
Nice tone ❤
Ugh, thank you! Finally
Criminally underrated song.
I agree, It's a very hard riff to play the proper way. I just pick each string without strumming because I'm not as good as frusciante
