If you understand music theory the two songs aren't very similar beyond the first few notes It was just inspiration a lot of artists come up with new songs by learning old ones
Look up a bands top 10-20 biggest influences and you will find pieces (or entire sections or even entire songs if the writer is unscrupulous or oblivious) of their music all over their stuff. I was just starting freshman year in HS. Being a Star wars geek that was also when the phantom menace came out. It was a pretty goddamn amazing time for movies and music.
Good video essay. Has all the qualities I enjoy. No over-talking, showing the source (aka RHCP) instead of quoting and saying it yourself, no over-researched areas. Perfect!

Its one thing to love the song and video, but to find out how it was made behind the scenes, makes me love it even more. I think because i can appreciate the art and creativity that went into it. You also get the sense that it wouldve been really fun to actually be there while it was all happening. Im just happy i was around when it came out (I was 5) lol.

growing up in germany, for a non-native speaker, his lyrics sounded like total gibberish to me. now, after 25 years of learning and speaking english, i am so amazed at the depth of his lyrics.
The life and lore of this band is fully an interest of mine in and of itself. The shit these guys have seen+experienced is insane. Each of them could write several books and have several biopics. They are hollywood history, theyre an og homegrown L.A band that are still selling out tours. I remember watching this video as a little kid and being so fascinated by it+the music. Its burnt into my brain. 😂
Growing up 80s and 90s in Dallas, RHCP was a huge part of my life and we listened to Pantera, Metallica and several other rock bands of the times but when BSSM released we all stopped and took note then RHCP announced they were done. That was my welcome to reality moment that bands didnt just exist, they were people to. Until that moment I had always thought bands like Suicidal and Beastie boys would always just exist but RHCP made me realise these guys struggled to live in the world the same as us.
I loved this song as a kid and not really knowing the meaning behind the lyrics but now since i’m a little older i took a look back at the lyrics and it’s very deep and showing the real meaning behindbut
I legit as a kid thought there was no way video games would ever reach that point. At least not anytime soon. But I always thought it would be so cool if they did. It's funny looking back because it looks silly now compared to the state of modern video games lol.

To be honest, back then, as a teen, I listened to a lot of music not so much because I liked it, but because I felt I needed to be part of something to be cool or something like that. It was more about identity than about the actual music. I wasn't even some fashion victim follower who listened to the popular stuff to be part of the in-crowd. I was a contrarian loner, but I listened to music that seemed to fit that image I had of myself. The Californication album was one of the few exceptions. It was one of the very few I genuinely listened to for the music and on which I liked pretty much every song.
I love these back story's. Ya think; I got the lyrics & the melody, we're almost done, but there's so much more & so many parts of the puzzle coming from so many people, in & out side the band. The song is the sauce. The players are the spices & the Chef gets his que's from from not only his tastes, but all the muses that touch him.
