Every time I look at booking a professional esthetician appointment or dermatology appointment and see the prices my heart sinks and I’m reminded how much money and class truly is a barrier for me and many others when it comes to skincare. If it weren’t for channels like this with reliable information, I’d not have the understanding of ingredients necessary to nurture and take care of my skin like I have been the past few years. I’d not know which products are reliable yet good quality without being extremely expensive. I’m getting older, yet my skin, in many ways, is improving and just looks and feels enjoyable and radiant. Although I still wish I could see a professional, that’s probably not going to be in the budget for awhile, so thank you Dr. Shah and Dr. Maxfield and others on UA-cam who share their knowledge and show results with evidence for those who wouldn’t be able to access otherwise.

I used to have dark elbows and knees. I resolved it by moisturising regularly, then going over that with oil. So basically high moisture and locking it in to soften the skin. But also, less kneeling on my bare knees and not leaning on my elbows on tables. So basically, reducing contact with hard surfaces. I haven't managed to remove darkness fully from my face yet, so will test out this acid.

putting a glycolic acid toner in a spray bottle can be useful for using it in the underarm area, legs, etc. some good affordable glycolic acid toners are the ordinary, versed has one that comes in a refill size, good molecules, etc. if you decide to use glycolic acid on your scalp/hair, be careful not to put your hair in a bun, ponytail, etc. i used glycolic acid on my scalp and put my hair in a bun, and it caused major breakage in my hair. might want to use it and then rinse out after a couple of mins.

I intend to keep using it long term because it's been working so well with my skin. Then when my skin calmed down and the purging stopped, I moved onto glycolic acid. I only use it at night and my routine is: cleanser, glycolic acid, cosrx propolis toner, illiyoon ato ceramide cream. It works so well for my skin but your skin might not be able to tolerate it. I have seborrheic dermatitis and I’ve tried a ketoconazole shampoo numerous times, but it has NEVER worked for me. Made my scalp even oilier, itching didn’t go away AND my hair mattified, lost it’s texture etc
For me the only things that have worked are ACV and the glycolic acid toner on my scalp.
I do the toner once a week. I apply it on my sectioned scalp, lightly massage it in, let it sit for 10-15 mins and then wash it out twice with a SLS free shampoo (that also has ginger extract)
Because of this I don’t even use a clarifying shampoo since the glycolic acid already does that job and it truly works like a charm!

When I started using AHAs for body odor (Lume deodorant) two years ago, I stopped getting HS flareups in my underarms. I think the exfoliation is keeping my sweat glands from clogging up. After a year of no underarm flareups, I started using body lotion with 5% glycolic acid 2-3 times a week on my inner thighs and inguinal area. I've had a couple start to swell up there, but they came to nothing and disappeared. I'm thrilled. I have a mild case of HS to begin with, so it might not be the same for more serious cases. I use glycolic acid under my arms after a shower before using deodorant. I use aluminum free ones. Sometimes in the past when I would use aluminum deodorants for even just a day ir two for events like a wedding etc where I didn’t want to sweat after I went back to using aluminum free I noticed just one or two uses of “ regular “ aluminum deodorant had clogged my pores so much. I’ve been doing this for years and every time the same things happen but they don’t look clogged to the naked eye until I stop using it and my pores start clearing. Acids under the armpits on the feet body etc for me are a 100% yes. I think most dermatologists might shy away from it because they’re always extremely concerned about irritation and patient complaints about irritation etc. and there’s not a lot of data currently, but it works. I think if you’re not completely daft you can use it and be fine. Like with every product start with a low percentage and patch test. Some people may need once a week some a few times a week. Some a very low percentage some a little higher percentage. As long as your armpits don’t look red or raw or irritated it’s fine. Just pay attention to your body and skin since we’re all so different. I also like to hydrate the area periodically under my arms to keep it soft and barrier protection there as well. My deodorant also is gentle so it doesn’t interact. If you’re new to an acid under the arm pits don’t use it right after you shave at first until you know you can tolerate it. You can also start with a glycolic or salicylic body wash under the arms first before you transition to an after shower leave on acid to see how it works with your skin. Everyone’s different if it doesn’t work for you don’t use it. ❤️

Thank you for this very clear and informative sum up of Glycolic acid in skin/hair Care! I was Reading a papper published by the “American Journal of Kidney diseases, AJKD” recently with the following title: Acute Kidney Injury and Hair-Straightening Products: A
    Case Series
And my question is: what do you guys, as dermatologists, think of the following paragraph of this paper regarding Glycolic acid?
…This led to an increase in the use of glycolic acid derivatives in hair-straightening products. Although these
agents are widely approved for cosmetic purposes in many countries and are marketed as “formaldehyde-free,” several studies suggest that glycolic acid derivatives may also release formaldehyde when exposed to high temperatures.
Reading this article made me really concerned with using Glycolic acid as an exfoliating agent. What is the temperature at which Glycolic acid might release formaldehyde? if this temperature is in the biological range, then, is there a certain dose or frequency of usage which is scientifically/clinically proven not to release formaldehyde in the body? I would really appreciate it if you kindly clarify on this😊

  • @MsJnice38

I use this sometimes too because as an esthetician I know that ingrown hair serums have the same ingredient and we all know that it exfoliates. Be careful not to use it everyday, you can get a burn. I would say once or twice a week and use it at night when you’re not putting on deodorant. It works great for dark underarms, ingrown hairs and deodorant build up than tends to make your underarm smell. For daily deodorant, you can use chlorophyll in your drinking water and bentonite clay as a treatment 2x a month to detox your armpits. I think that’s the only way you can go without deodorant or natural deodorant.

Thanks Again Guy’s. The Differen has a new body spray with Glycolic Acid and it seems to be helping the body acne. Also the head acne when the hair Ingrows from cutting it really short. The Differen also has a new body wash and along with Differen Acne Treatment and Epiduo Forte seems to be reducing the skin lesions and puss on the body.
Acne is interesting it seems like it’s always there and could flare anytime but with your help and these new products it’s a possibility to keep it under control.

I use glycolic acid serum for my pores, I have an acne-prone skin and when I tell you acne-prone skin I MEAN it because my dermatologist prescribed me Isotretinoin 2 years ago that’s how bad my acne was
So, I was trying to keep the results after I finished the course and started using adapalene (not everyday) it’s great I had no or little acne while using it but I had large pores, some blackheads and whiteheads and my dermatologist recommended that I add glycolic acid to my routine (not everyday) and it was the best thing ever! It removed the texture that I had because of whiteheads and oil buildup BUT you really need to use everything in caution and ask an expert how to use it in details

I'm super prone to ingrown hairs.. they always get infected & fill up with dead skin cells so I use retinol to keep the skin shedding regularly. When I do get the occasional boil, I use a benzoyle peroxide spot treatment. Always finish up with a gentle moisturizer. I just don't like the smell of deodorants... For the past number of years, I use benzoyl peroxide 5% wash (rinse off after 5 minutes), and antiperspirant (the night before, since antiperspirants actually take a while to sink into the pores and do their thing). This way I smell like nothing. I'm going to try my glycolic acid now though, since BP isn't a good match if you have underarm hair, since it soaks into the soaks, and then when you sweat it's a bleaching issue. No one I watch on youtube mentioned this, because they don't have underarm hair lol (just a collective blind spot there). Works REALLY well though.

It also made my face a bit dry (I have an oily skin) so better stick to a lot of moisturizers. For lightening my knees and elbows, it didn’t do much. Maybe I need to use it for more than a month to see results. But it actually helped my psoriases a lot (I have it also on my knees) and it actually removed a lot of the built up skin there and it looked much better. But for lightening, still waiting for results to show. Overall, this product is really great ❤
