From what I know about Fischer games, he doesn't seem to weigh too heavily "being a piece down." He seems to enjoy creating twisted combinations that give him controlling/winning positions, regardless of the look of the board. I would have never ever seen that bishop move coming. Poor Rubinetti, his checkmate-in-one was completely turned against him. Thanks. Mato, for another awesome video.
I like playing like that too. You also have the advantage of surprise, because they never see moves like that coming, and it can make them think defensively rather than offensively
And we have reached critical position of the game!!! Those words are always nice to hear in your videos. Thank you for all your uploads... Never get tired of watching them. :)
Tal was crazy fascinating on the board. Shame he wasn't world champion for more than a year. I remember that back in 1962 or so Tal have to leave a tournament because he was ill, and Bobby Fischer was the only person to visit him in the hospital.
At 5:41 pawn to c6 is good as well , black can't take because he would lose queen and once the bishop is out of the way, there are several ways for white to proceed and to win
Usually playing d6 afterwards can be very strong, so try a sac on d5 if: 1) Black's King is uncastled and is a couple of moves away from it 2) A Knight is on c6 (2.exd5 gets a tempo) 3) b4/Na5 is played to attack your Knight/Bishop (play the respective piece to d5) 4) Black hasn't played d6 so that you may play it yourself and B/Ne7 doesn't work 5) Your Bishop is on b3 so it's not as easy to attack These are just guidelines though, and assume that Nc3 and Bb3 have been played.
With the black King still in the centre Fisher just open the game as quickly as possible. The Bishop sacrifice was worth the possibilities it created. Fisher strikes at the earliest possible moment, earlier than other players think is the moment.
Hi Mato thanx for the vids i'm learning allot! I'm not Spanish speaker but I know that you are not suppose to pronounce the L in Mallorca as L but as Y so it's sounds like - Mayorca.
Dear Mato. I play chess for over 18 years now (I'm 24) and since I watch your videos I really improved my chess. By now I can almost always guess "da killah mouve" ;) Thank your very very much. If I might suggest something. What do you think about a live chess lecture? We could guess the best moves via chat :-) Best regards from Germany. Alex.
Sacrificing a piece on d5 in the Sicilian is always something to look out for. It usually keeps Black's queenside pieces out of play and lets you attack the King in the centre of the board. If Black had taken the time to play b4, then Nd5 is also possible. In fact, a Knight sacrifice is much more common.
You're completely right, but queen would still be lost in a different variation. If King takes on e8 then rook from a1 to e1 - check. Either kings goes back to d7 (then knight to b4 is possible again) or bisshop covers check on e7. In the last variation then knight takes one e7 - discovered check - and queen is still lost. Black is better in that variation since he still has his rook pair, but still losing.
@5:40 Why not pawn to C6, cutting off communication between black queen and bisshop? If queen takes knight on D4 then pawn takes bisshop on B7 forking king and rook. If bisshop takes pawn on c6 then knight takes and if queen then takes then rook from E1 to C1 pinning queen to king. Looks pretty decent to me.
If you ever feel as though you are playing a completely unsound move, just remember these 2 things: The words of the greatest tactical player chess has ever seen; Mikhail Tal: "Some sacrifices are sound, the rest are mine!" It is up to your opponent, who has a ticking clock and may be quite scared after you have played something crazy, to find the defense. It isn't up to a computer, your opponent will make mistakes and if you capitalise on them, you just might get the win after all.
White queen to D4 is check - forces black queen to jump in front of the pawn (the black king is in check in all other spots he could move). Then pawn captures queen and the game is lost.
12.Bd5 !!! What a winning move ,who could think of it ? human or machine ,this is a perfect demonstration of the genie of Fischer ..his " Intuition" ; you used the winning "Key" word Mato ! "Intuition ,from the Latin word Intueri ,is the ability to acquire knowledge without inference and/or the use of reason. Wikipedia"
Hello everyone , the interesting thing is why Fisher sacrifice the bishop and not the Knight .. well he wanted to open the file and the Knight was more active then the bishop .. if he sacrificed the knight then the bishop will be blocked :)
White Rook to d1 check. separating the black king from the queen. After black king takes takes rook on e8, queen takes queen check, followed by checkmate next move.
In Spanish language, a double "l" is not pronounced as an "l". You should say something like "Maiorca". My native language is Dutch, but I'm not even gonna try to explain how to pronounce "Scheveningen". In the world wars they have let soldiers pronounce "Scheveningse schuitjes", to hear if they were German or not. It was a matter of life or death...
Mato, you are the best. If I were rich, I would have created a "Chess popularization award" and you would be the first recipient.
Thank you

No matter how much hard work you put in, it is hard to beat such a talent. True talent is easy to recognize.
Fantastic video and analysis, as usual. Thanks Mato!

Thank you so much for going above and beyond!
Thanks for another great game
I went to poke the like button and I had already liked it. Your videos don't get old. Keep up the good work.
Wonderful analysis Mato. Please keep them coming!
Hi Mato,
Oh Boy Oh Boy
Your videos are the best !!
Keep up the good work.
This killer move was also played by Tal against Mukhin. You made a video of that.#Mato :D
Thanks MAto for putting games.... on youtube...
Thank you for your comment
Congratulations on 6000 subscribers! Your hard work is appreciated :)
Thank you
Thanks, Mato, as usual.
Thanks, Mato!
fisher was amazing better then all the players ive watched on you tube.
He hasn't seen Tal or Morphy.
Tal was crazy fascinating on the board. Shame he wasn't world champion for more than a year. I remember that back in 1962 or so Tal have to leave a tournament because he was ill, and Bobby Fischer was the only person to visit him in the hospital.
Tal fisher and kasparof is the best players of all a times
Thank you Mato!
Great videos Mato. What if after bishop d5, black pawn e5?
At 5:41 pawn to c6 is good as well , black can't take because he would lose queen and once the bishop is out of the way, there are several ways for white to proceed and to win
+Jakov Martin then black would take with his bishop instead...
+Kusalin Thanyakullsajja still, then the white would take the bishop
+Kusalin Thanyakullsajja With his knight ofc, and then black can't take with queen again..
Thanks Mato.

5) Your Bishop is on b3 so it's not as easy to attack
These are just guidelines though, and assume that Nc3 and Bb3 have been played.
It's good that you remind us to like the video. I always forget but I want to do it.
I new that I don't have to answer all questions but can relay on some people who will explain it.
Thank you
Robert James Fischer = gênio.
Bravo Mato!
Thanks Mato..
Hi Mato, could you do more Judit Polgar games?
With the black King still in the centre Fisher just open the game as quickly as possible. The Bishop sacrifice was worth the possibilities it created. Fisher strikes at the earliest possible moment, earlier than other players think is the moment.

got you. Thanks for explaining

at 2:48, what if pawn does not capture b on b5, instead plays b to e7?
6000 subs? I guess I am not a VIP member anymore.
Mato, jel moze sutra jedan video Gligorica ?
Awsome !!!
More fisher plzzzz
Games of Gligoric are coming up soon.
I agree, Fisher got Good compensation for Bishop
Very Nice Game !

after white queen to D4, black king takes rook on e8 or no? what am i missing here?
What about Kc7 at 5:43???
Kc7 is illegal move because of bishop
Man, I almost guessed the killer move.

good work, add more sicilian games and tactics for black to win
Il fallait jouer BXD5 au lieu de QXD5?
White queen to D4 is check - forces black queen to jump in front of the pawn (the black king is in check in all other spots he could move). Then pawn captures queen and the game is lost.
A piece down, but Two moves ahead, that's the price of a bishop
Great game Mato
amazing skill
Another variation winner too
[FEN "r1k2b1r/1b3p2/p6p/2Pq2pn/3N4/1Q4B1/P4PPP/R3R1K1 w - - 0 1"]

5. Nxe7+ Kf8 6. Nxd5

mat šta ako nakon b4 ne makne konja nego igra npr. lovac e7 ili nešto drugo samo bi vratia figuru nazad?
Hello everyone , the interesting thing is why Fisher sacrifice the bishop and not the Knight .. well he wanted to open the file and the Knight was more active then the bishop .. if he sacrificed the knight then the bishop will be blocked :)
i get your point
Hey Mato, today is Slovenia vs Croatia! :D Who will win? ^^
I dont understand, why didn't Queen take g2 when he resigned?
+Juan Alvarez Because white would take it back with his King (blacks white bishop was captured one move before).
+Juan Alvarez Then white queen takes, and after black king takes white rook takes black rook and white is 3 pawns up in material
Not when queen blocks the discovered check with queen to d7
why not did the Black queen capture knight..
White Rook to d1 check. separating the black king from the queen. After black king takes takes rook on e8, queen takes queen check, followed by checkmate next move.
What if queen takes knight at 6:06?
Then Rd1 is devastating.
Rd1+ - Kxe8
Qxc6+ - Ke7
Qd6+ - Ke8
Re1+ - Be7
Qxe7++
Holy smokes.
I guessed the killer move, but for the wrong reason lol !!
Same trick as tal did in Tal / Muhnkin game
Fischer saw that game & every other published game too.
At 6:03 when black resigned... He could have played King takes rook on e8. Than way he do not have to lose the queen.
King to d9 is not possible because chess board has only 8x8 squares ...
But then queen can move to d7 to block the discover check.
It's the same, knight to b4, discovered check winning queen.
Still Knight b4 -> discovered check from queen. Queen was lost whatever black played.
Fischer must have been playing a rookie
Black's Nh5 is a blunder. Better was h5 and then white continues with Qf3, Rh6 and so on.
at critical position i would of played e5 instead of taking bishop
Intuition or calculation. Who knows?
Fisher never left anything to chance.
"Maiyorca!!!"
Rd1
