You know it's a Mato video if you get the notification that listening to loud music for too long can damage your ears. I love you and your quiet voice, Mato.
Bobby Fischer inspired me to start playing chess when I was 12 years old. I bought this book called bobby fischer teaches chess but I was too young to understand it. Many years later I'm studying his game and especially openings because he's my inspiration and hero as a chess player.
Hi Mato, I´ve got to say I really enjoy your video´s. I must admit that I often narrate my chess games in your voice: "And in this position, Thomas found a killer move". Keep up the good work!
Hi mato I subscribed to you about a month now and I've really enjoyed your videos more than any other! I wanna say thanks and don't stop making them I learn alot from them :)
Mato, great videos! I am trying to become better at chess because I am not much of a technical player, with openings and such. Your videos are awesome for not only teaching me openings, but helping me learn good strategy and how to accomplish midgame success, where I struggle the most.
Mato i admire you very much , I appreciate what you do for chess world for us that we are at a medium level .I want to share this feeling of appreciation for you by saying that when i can't sleep i just start your videos and I close my eyes and imagine chessboard and believe me it works beacuse you have an warm voice . Keep up the good work !
Locutus D'Borg Garry kasparov was very gracious I thought when he said let's forget the anti semitic stuff and what was clearly mental illness and just think of his beautiful games and contribution to the game of chess.
Mato, I very much enjoy your little guided tours of these important and interesting games. Although I am very much a beginner to chess, many of your observations are very useful and will help me, I'm sure, to play better. (One day!) Thank you.
Thanks a lot Mato, this was really a great analysis. I really enjoyed it - although had to use the "pause button" a couple of time to make sure I made the right moves,,,. :-)
Hey Mato, thanks for the brilliant videos. I have a couple of suggestions for you in terms of games: Mariotti- Gligoric 1969 and Cosulich- Unzicker 1970. Both games are two very unknown gems of the 70s'. Cheers !
@sahil23isngh Sorry chess friend, CHESS BASE says Bobby Fisher - Yefim Geller International Trnm Bled Slovenia 1961. I just double checked. Maybe CHESS BASE has it wrong, never know.
@MatoJelic hello mato i really enjoy your videos and think tghat you are a great Commentator but i think you hear that often ;) but anyways can you pleas tell me wehre you get all thesee famous chessgames i would love if you answer me thx :)
thanks for offering HD but i cant see why you would need more than 360p here. (mine just defaulted to the 720p but I dont like to waste anything even though its free)
Hi Turay, he played that move Qb7 intentionally so that he can capture his Rook at a8. Let me explain you with an example: Suppose, he playes according to you at Qb4, this will give a check to Black king. Black defenses with Ke7, then Quen captures Ke7. The Black King will have one place left i.e Kg8. After this there is no way of giving a check mate or capture Black Rook. Hope this helps!
@RRappadura You are right but White would still have a better position: 14...hxg6 15.Ne4 Qe5 (15...Qh4 16.Nxd6+ cxd6 17.Qxd6 Qxh3? 18.Re1++- or 15...Qd8 then 16.Qf3 and white stands better) 16.Nxd6+ Qxd6 17.Qf3±
Hmmm.... I think there's something wrong with this video... Oh that's right! "Thank you for watching this video, " "...I wish you good luck with your chess, and bye for now."
@sahil23isngh I triple checked, goggled and found this: Bled 1961 Fischer vs Geller, 1961 (C72) Ruy Lopez, Modern Steinitz Defense, 5.O-O, 22 moves, 1-0 Bled 1961 Fischer vs Keres, 1961 (B11) Caro-Kann, Two Knights, 3...Bg4, 56 moves, 1/2-1/2 Now I think that Schiller has it wrong
In my opinion the cozio defense is an dynamic approach to challenge the Ruy Lopez. Get your opponent out of theory as fast as you can. What's your opinion Mato? Thank you for the very instructive video.
@MatoJelic thank you very much for the tip but dont need it more because i just bought something similar to a chessbase there you can also watch maany famous games. subbed ;)
@hackerkillea I have few hundred chess books and I also use database (Chessbase software) that has millions of games in it. I am currently making endgame videos and I am using examples from seven different books.
Hi guys, I'm new to chess but you mentionned that white have an easy win at 4:51 but at that point, king can take the queen or even the g7 pawn could take it, removing the check. Right?
You have to think of it like a chess professional, being down a bishop and a rook is huge ...would you be willing to put yourself through a lot of mental anguish. For us it might be who cares but for them its going to be more serious
You are probably right indeed! Maybe his focus was to be ahead in material and clean the pawns. More that I think of it, trading the queens was indeed good for him since he had more points on the table... I suppose that's why I'm stuck at lower than 500 ranking ahah!
Because his Rook at A8 was being attacked (and put the Black King in check). Black needed that other rook to stop Fischer's King from escaping. But it was too late apparently as Fischer was closer to putting Geller in trouble.
At 3:43 White moves his queen to B7. Why couldn't he have just moved it to B4 then and achieved the start of the end? Did he just miss it??? I don't understand the point of the B7 move unless pawn capture seemed like the right idea at the time.
At 4:25 "Fischer played a move and Geller resigned." WTH? Fischer is a beast. I mean look at what Black still has to work with (putting Whites King in almost checkmate) and Geller still gives up.
Only other option after the check from the queen at B4 was: move rook to D8, white queen takes black rook, black queen takes white queen, white bishop takes black queen, black knight to E7 to block check, white rook takes knight, then black king runs and loses black rook.
Positionally, perhaps Black's greatest mistake was 7...Qf6. Should have developed the KN. Played with a short-term tactical view and overlooked the long-term strategic consequences. Waddya think?
@sparkyk24 The purpose of chess is to win, resigning is a luxery only to those outside of beginner and beginner ratings. Rude is not resigning when you play a 2k player, but anyone below that rating needs to work for the win. Because unless they have a force win, they havent' secured the win yet.
It is a very distinct accent. if I were to venture a guess I'd say it sounds like a Croatian accent, but a Croatian accent that belongs to someone living in South Australia. I'm gonna take a stab in the dark here and say... Adelaide perhaps. I don't know. I'm not good at guessing. That's why I like chess though :)
I bet you are natively from Croatia/Slovenia/Slovakia, because that's how people speak English around there, I'm Polish so I know :P Also, Mato Jelic doesnt seem to be australian nickname.
Hi Mato, thanks for the video.. i felt black ( geller ) could have won this game.. at 4:06 instead of moving rook from a8 to d8, had he moved the pawn from H3 to H2 and giving check to white king...White bishop cannot take the pawn as there would be check with queen from g6 nor he could kill the pawn with king due to black rook on H8...white king has to move to either G2 or F1 .. once king moves then black pawn could go to H1 and converts to queen giving check and black's position would have been much better .. do you agree or am i missing some thing here .. can you pls explain...
...Kf8 is a terrible move. Instead of developing his knight and setting himself up to castle, black moves his king next to his undeveloped night and puts himself in an exposed defensive position. Sure, the knight would've been temporarily pinned on the E file, but it could've easily been protected 2 or 3 times with supporting pieces. Then black could've castled and the complexion of the game would've been totally different, probably favoring black due to white's weak kingside. I think black probably thought his rook on the H file was going to be more advantageous if he left it there instead of castling, considering the strong threats against white's king, so that at least explains what would otherwise be a very poor move with ...Kf8.
You know it's a Mato video if you get the notification that listening to loud music for too long can damage your ears. I love you and your quiet voice, Mato.

This Fischer chap was pretty good.
I'm surprised I haven't heard more about him.
+james knox He had a decent career before he grew a beard and became a jobless hippy (*_*)
Locutus D'Borg Garry kasparov was very gracious I thought when he said let's forget the anti semitic stuff and what was clearly mental illness and just think of his beautiful games and contribution to the game of chess.

It is a gift from God.
Good job Mato. Your videos are short and well explained.
Buen trabajo, muy interesante.

Do more TAL, TAL and your voice and accent and your little jokes, awesome !
@hackerkillea No, but you can download for free chess base reader.
Google chessbase and you will find it.
Far superior to thechesswebsite. Thanks for your excellent work across all the games.
thanks for great video
A square is highlighted-software is predicting(suggesting) the best move.

Very clear Mato. Thanks Chessnut
at 2:28 after white (hypothetically) plays knight to e4, why doesn't black respond with queen to H4 putting some pressure on the white kingside pawns?
Hmmm.... I think there's something wrong with this video...
Oh that's right!
"Thank you for watching this video, "
"...I wish you good luck with your chess, and bye for now."
You really have Mato's charming accent down pat.
Very good game by Bobby fischer.
amazing
Brilliant game!
@sahil23isngh I triple checked, goggled and found this:
Bled 1961
Fischer vs Geller, 1961
(C72) Ruy Lopez, Modern Steinitz Defense, 5.O-O, 22 moves, 1-0
Bled 1961
Fischer vs Keres, 1961
(B11) Caro-Kann, Two Knights, 3...Bg4, 56 moves, 1/2-1/2
Now I think that Schiller has it wrong
Mato, thanks for video!
What would happen if rook D5 instead of resigning?
This was Fischer vs Keres 1969 its in my book of eric schiller
Wow he didn't see that coming did he. Omg how many moves ahead did he see
In my opinion the cozio defense is an dynamic approach to challenge the Ruy Lopez. Get your opponent out of theory as fast as you can. What's your opinion Mato? Thank you for the very instructive video.
Thats awesome! Where can I get it?
Could someone help explain to me why black didn't do pawn to b5 after Fischer retreated the bishop to a4 at the beginning?
i want to play aginst you so bad....i think you are good at it and i wanna see real Masters
A lot of these final killer moves are easy to spot, but its setting them up that is diffcult, right?
why he didn't play Qb4 at 3:42 ? Did he miss it because of he planned before black played pawn d5?? or i am missing somewhere ?
@MatoJelic thank you very much for the tip but dont need it more because i just bought something similar to a chessbase there you can also watch maany famous games. subbed ;)

great game MatoJelic
Creepy? I am your biggest fan you have revolutionized my chess. I apologize if I have offended you in any way.
When is his mixtape dropping?🔥
yep! also, it will be very helpful to positional players out there ~
:)
Volume is low on the video, I can barely hear it. Partly a problem with Apple laptops, but the video could have used more level on the audio.
No, all of Mato's other videos are good in audio, but not this one.
And I'm on a apple laptop.
Geoffrey Wu This isn't the only one with low volume, most of the videos have good audio though. :)
+Michael Bauers Volume is very low on my Apple laptop.
Nice game
Why couldn't the B2 pawn take the white queen (in the speculated move)?
Hi guys, I'm new to chess but you mentionned that white have an easy win at 4:51 but at that point, king can take the queen or even the g7 pawn could take it, removing the check. Right?
i was thinking that and then it hit me, white is up a rook and a bishop...while the checkmate is not visible yet a good player would find it very soon
+donald ceri I agree but at least, you could try and maybe win on time? Anyway, I found it weird to just get check mated instead of trying...
+donald ceri Actually I think players of all levels would know that they are probably 99% screwed if they lose a rook and a bishop.
3:42,Qb4 isn't winning?
That is correct. It's all up to you how you play it.
: )
Beginner question: why can't black play b5 after the bishop drops back in the beginning
Woot, I guessed the move at 3:56
3:56
QxA1
Is this not Checkmate?
@MatoJelic Is the chessbase for free?
Because his Rook at A8 was being attacked (and put the Black King in check). Black needed that other rook to stop Fischer's King from escaping. But it was too late apparently as Fischer was closer to putting Geller in trouble.
I got it now. It's to get the rook to a square less favourable. So that after Ne7, the rook is lost in that continuation.
4.15 why doesn't black move the pawn to h2 instead which can't be taken by the bishop beacuse it is pinned and the king because of the rook?
At 3:43 White moves his queen to B7. Why couldn't he have just moved it to B4 then and achieved the start of the end? Did he just miss it??? I don't understand the point of the B7 move unless pawn capture seemed like the right idea at the time.
3:41 why Qb4 + was not played??
At 4:25 "Fischer played a move and Geller resigned." WTH? Fischer is a beast. I mean look at what Black still has to work with (putting Whites King in almost checkmate) and Geller still gives up.
after h2+ Kh1 then how would black continue?
Hay mato, play some vids of Karpov! He has some great ones in the archives! Check em out!
Waddya think?
why does ur voice chanced so much in the latest videos compared to ur old vids?
Hi Mato
Why couldn't the queen do check mate at 3:41?
PS. Pravi si majstor
@sparkyk24 The purpose of chess is to win, resigning is a luxery only to those outside of beginner and beginner ratings. Rude is not resigning when you play a 2k player, but anyone below that rating needs to work for the win. Because unless they have a force win, they havent' secured the win yet.
4:25 , Qc7 is a good move ?
@4:05, why did he not go pawn to H2?
It is a very distinct accent. if I were to venture a guess I'd say it sounds like a Croatian accent, but a Croatian accent that belongs to someone living in South Australia.
I'm gonna take a stab in the dark here and say... Adelaide perhaps.
I don't know. I'm not good at guessing. That's why I like chess though :)
Why not the queen plays Qb4 straight away at 3:42?
I bet you are natively from Croatia/Slovenia/Slovakia, because that's how people speak English around there, I'm Polish so I know :P Also, Mato Jelic doesnt seem to be australian nickname.
He can play b5 (that's very common move) but black wants to develop his pieces before attacking. You should always develop first, then attack.
Why doesn't black play pawn to H7 at 4:08 ?
Because of Qa8 checkmate ;)
@3:56 why not Kf1?
analyzed it a little more. The rook wasn't on D8 to be taken at that point.
Hi Mato, thanks for the video.. i felt black ( geller ) could have won this game..
at 4:06 instead of moving rook from a8 to d8, had he moved the pawn from H3 to H2 and giving check to white king...White bishop cannot take the pawn as there would be check with queen from g6 nor he could kill the pawn with king due to black rook on H8...white king has to move to either G2 or F1 .. once king moves then black pawn could go to H1 and converts to queen giving check and black's position would have been much better ..
do you agree or am i missing some thing here .. can you pls explain...
he could just take the pawn with the bishop
nvm, lol
the king would just sidestep to H1, and then capture with the bishop, since it is being supported by the pawn
Thejrpirate09
can't move bishop as it is pinned by black queen on g6..
ik, but if you just sidestep the king infront of the pawn, you can just take with the bishop. there is no way to defend it.
Mato, I love your videos, but they are all so quiet I can barely hear them.
Why not capture the Knight with Queen at 2:18?????
RE1 pins queen to K, QxR maybe, QxQ, loss of a Q for a R is probably insta- resign at this level of play.
...Kf8 is a terrible move. Instead of developing his knight and setting himself up to castle, black moves his king next to his undeveloped night and puts himself in an exposed defensive position. Sure, the knight would've been temporarily pinned on the E file, but it could've easily been protected 2 or 3 times with supporting pieces. At 3:56, you say there is only one winning move, but QxA8 is checkmate.
What is the name of the software?
QxQ then RxQ and BxR
this is old video ?
I am not a very good chess player but my doubt is that, after Qd6, why QxQ and why not BxQ.?
4:06 can Black play h2+ ?
