    Remember back. Fuji had her husband and child killed in the same way Mariko's family was killed. Honor is everything in feudal Japan. Sepaku restores honor because the act is so very hard to perform. It is NOT an execution. There is no higher obligation than vassal to Lord, AND lord to vassal. Equally important.

    This is such a good show since if you were not paying attention, you would not have noticed the seeds down that pays off later on.
    An example of this is why Toranaga deduces that it was either Yabushige or Omi who manipulated his son, nagakado.
    This is because this was the outcomes he was hoping for all along.
    This is why he left the leadership of the artillery regiment to Yabushige and Nagakado and they went to Ajiro and he left for Edo to muster his forces:
    Outcome 1. Yabushige realizes his strength with the new altillery, turns on the messenger that Will eventually be sent after them that will demand Yabushige return to Osaka and commit seppuku, and corner him to having no choice but to throw his lot with him.
    Outcome 2. Using Kiku to whisper seeds of ambition to Omi; have Omi take the rash action on Yabushige’s behalf. After which same general flow of outcome 1. But with the added bonus that, if ever his enemies mobilize before he is ready, he can offer up Omi’s life to buy time.
    Omi realizes the danger of acting himself so he manipulates nagakado into action.
    This makes Toranaga mad: not the action itself but that his own son got manipulated into taking action by the very people his father was angking to take said action in the first place.
    But he takes the opportunity to teach his son a lesson; and also test Yabushige’s motives, who wasted no time to throw Omi under the bus. Toranaga uses the opportunity to throw a wrench between Omi and Yabushige by awarding command of the artillery to Omi as a reward for the action Yabushige threw his nephew under the bus for! And Yabushige’s reaction says it all.

    Also Fuji-sama for best WAIFU.
    She started episode 4 firmly protesting even the idea of serving a Barbarian; to starting episode 5 telling his own uncle off that she does not know how to serve a barbarian as she is consort to a Hatamoto. I mean if she could complain to anyone if she still had disdain in serving a foreigner, it would be her uncle.
    So this, almost throwaway line to the unobservant, is the most significant thing Fuji has done.
    More than her pointing the gun on Omi which is her obligation; or even giving the swords to Blackthorne after receiving the guns as a gift, which, being a great gesture in and of itself, was something she was honour-bound to do. Her comment to her uncle was the first positive thing she said and/or done for Blackthorne that is free of any real obligation.

    Mariko's father was a top general under Kuroda (Oda Nobunaga), as were Toranaga, Toda, and the future Taiko. Her marriage to the son of Toda took place before her father betrayed Kuroda and was a good political match at the time.
    Her situation is a little flipped from how it was IRL though. The real woman she is based on wasn't ordered to keep living, the reason she didn't commit suicide because of her catholic faith. Also everyone wanted her real husband to divorce her so she could be put to death with the rest of the Akechi clan, but he refused out of *devotion*, not to torment her.

  • @P.Whitestrake
    @P.Whitestrake 7 місяців тому +20

    The reason of Buntaro marrying Mariko was a political alliance. In the real history, Mariko's dad, Jinsai Akechi (based on Mitsuhide Akechi) was one of the closest retainer of the warlord Kuroda (based on Nobunaga Oda). Buntaro's family was a high ranking samurai family under Kuroda as well (based on Hosokawa family) & good friends with the Akechi family.
    Akechi made a coup against Kuroda & managed to kill him in Honno-Ji temple. However, the rest of Kuroda's retainers & hatamoto led by young Nakamura (shown in episode 2 opening scene as the dying old Taiko, based on Shogun Hideyoshi Toyotomi) avenged his death & captured Akechi in Yamazaki.

  • @raphandant
    @raphandant 7 місяців тому +17

    It was very common in Asia for the mothers of rulers to hold significant power. Lady Ochiba, for example, is the most powerful woman in Japan because she is in a position to influence her son, the future Taiko. She could never be a regent since it would not be socially acceptable for a woman to hold the position. So most women ruled in the shadows via manipulation and influence, which is what she's doing.

    The way they fight in this era is to avoid war.
    How to fight without reducing national power
    ⁂The main focus is on espionage warfare, where you draw enemies to your side.
    Therefore, lower-ranking samurai were working behind the scenes to decide which side to side with.
    A senior samurai arranged to have him on his side.
    To put it simply, these are 10 daimyo from the era of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
    They ruled Japan by dividing it into 10 parts.
    Toyotomi Hideyoshi died and the battle to unify the country began.
    Divided into eastern and western armies
    The battle of 100,000 to 80,000 was decided in just six hours.
    Only about 20,000 people died on both sides.
    This is because many from the Toyotomi side defected to the Tokugawa side.
    It was a strategic victory for the Tokugawa side.
    Toyotomi = Ishido & Ochiba
    Tokugawa = Toranaga

    Awesome that Zakk has seen 'Yojimbo' & 'Sanjuro', these were remade almost shot for shot as the Eastwood spaghetti westerns 'A fistful of dollars' & 'A few dollars more'. 'Seven Samurai' is a touchstone and stars many outstanding actors, including Toshiro Mifune, who would years later play the role of Torranaga-sama in the 80's production of Shogun. I also recommend 'The Hidden Fortress', a story about a beautiful rebel princess who is joined by an old, wise General and two peasants as they try to get back home... sound familiar? George Lucas was certainly influenced by Kurosawa, in fact the stories set in this era are called Jidaigeki... pronounced Jedi geh-key... yeah.

  • @beck99o
    @beck99o 7 місяців тому +5

    Some points..
    1) The landslide was shown going through the valley where the 1000+ strong army was camped, so I expect majority of them are dead.
    2) The husband who miraculously escaped could be a spy, they mentioned the low odds of survival a few times and when he was asked about it, he looked depressed. So Ishido may have captured him and forced him back to spy or something. Although with honor and all that, I don't think this is the case actually.
    3) The Heirs mother, I expect is a powerful ally to a regent, as she will be pulling the strings of the heir when he comes into power (for a time). So Ishido is probably aligned with her to keep power in a way after that happens. The fact that she is taking control over Ishido means that he is prepared to let that happen in order to keep the alliance with her. I doubt her power will be public knowledge to the other regents.

    Lets go back to episode 1 for a moment. Fujiko-san's husband had a short fuse and just before Toranaga had his meeting with the council. Who would have had a word with him to get him fired up, Toranaga? Did Toranaga already have Fujiko's husband "Broken to the Fist." Now that Lady Ochiba has returned to Osaka Castle has Toranaga turned the castle into their prison? Will Ochiba, when her son becomes Taiko, will she be the real power behind the throne? Cheers, Chris Perry.

      Yes. This was a thing in europe: to hang game bird with feathers on during fall/winter (for optimized temerature) to tenderize the meat, and concentrate the flavours.
      Hanging it feathers on and the smell is correct.
      But it should have been done in a cellar, away from direct sunlight, and it would not have attracted flies like that, especially in the winter.

      No, that is not true. This nonsense for some reason is being spread around. Read the book "Seppuku: A History of Samurai Suicide" by Andrew Rankin and "The Samurai: Swords, Shoguns, and Seppuku" by Ben Hubbard. Buntaro would only commit seppuku/harakiri at the command of Toranaga and not for such a trivial matter. Buntaro lost face, that is all. What needed to be done is what Blackthorn did except more graciously. Blackthorn has no power over Buntaro to compel him to commit seppuku or harakiri.

    The bird wont rot. It is fairly common to hang pheasants, quail, etc for a few days. You don't want to eat something that is in rigor mortis, some really unpleasant tasting enzymes in the meat if you do. You wait until rigor wears off which is usually a few days. With a pheasant a 4-7 day period is normal, but they really don't smell as bad as they were acting in this show.
