People seem to be confuse why the counsel would listen to lady Ociba. Remember she is a woman of power. In fuedial Japan women could rule if their husband died, their heir was not of age to rule. Remember she the mother to the Taiko son and because her son is not old enough to rule that means she is the acting Regent until her son comes of age this isn't Europe at the time where women had little power and little to no say, and who couldn't rule outside their husbands eventhough Japan was patracal society women could rule. They have even been female emperors of japan. Keep in mind she a daughter of a late lord who was very powerful and on top of that she is late Taiko consort especially because she gave the Taiko and heir she has a lot of power.
Seen quite a few reactors mistakenly assume that Lord Ito is just an actor. He is a full lord (Daimyo), he just has a passion for acting. Like poetry, art and flower arranging, lord prided themselves on becoming masters of cultural arts. many lords would act in Noh plays, like Katsumoto does in The Last Samurai. It's not like they have just approached an actor on the street and asked him to be one of the most powerful men in the realm, lol!
That tea house scene was EPIC. Everything was subtext. 1. First she said that “this is a private place where it can be dark if you wish it”. As if to say “I know whats going on". 2. Then Kiku mentions to his apparent ice how you notice something when its gone. Translation “this must end” 3. Then, after observing his guests says “a woman cannot look away when someone else suffers”, which subtly hints at her deducing what's going on between Mariko-sama and Blackthorne. But also hunting they can have a moment one last time. 4.Then comes the part where Kiku sits behind Mariko while she behind to explain the willow world. Where she is saying the words but Anjin can only see Mariko. Mariko, on her part, started bu translating for Kiku dono, saying “she says” etc; but gets all caught up and started translating as if she herself was saying it. 5. And it caps off with Kiku-dono asking if Mariko were to join them. It was all well staged. So well staged that, thankfully, they did not add the actual pillowing scene which would have cheapened the whole thing. Then the walk the morning after was a highly ritualized public display that was meant to dispell any rumors, and Mariko did warn Blackthorne not to make a scene. And since there's a lady wth you, im sure she knows how much s3xually charged that situation was, in an er0tic novel kind of way.... at least someone gets it.
As great as that scene was, the book goes into greater detail from Kiku's perspective. And its not about sex, its about her attitude towards John. She ends up really respecting him. The last scene where she accompanies him to the village was important. Kiku was letting everyone know that he was much man.
Mariko changed John’s messages to Kiku bc she was jealous. She didn’t want Kiku to like him too much, and didn’t want John to return later as Kiku suggested. Btw, Kiku totally saw their connection, and offered Mariko a chance to “enjoy” herself in the darkness, discreetly, and away from prying eyes.
The first few minutes revealed that Mariko was unaware of his father’s plans and held contempt for Hidekatsu Toda-sama even then, and i didnt know this until this episode, she views him as below her station, or beneath her in ranking, as evidenced by her comment in the flashback about how her father is discarding him; also telling Ruri-hime (Ochiba sama) what a joke and worth less alliance it was to marry her off to the Toda family;and also by his comment to Toranaga about how his father should have married her better.
And so, when Toranaga revealed truth bombs to her, clearing up her misunderstanding, i was literally shouting at the screan “YES! THANK YOU!” So much so that the next door neighbour knocked on my door to check if i was OK. Lol😅😅😅 Also, though her words were subtitled “i have failed my father”, it could have also been translated as “I have betrayed my father’s trust” as in she betrayed him for wishing for death instead of noticing the great plans and hopes she placed on her when he married her off to a lesser house. And it puts Hidekatsu Toda-sama in a more sympathetic light, though of course, we still disapprove of the Domestic violence. But put yourself in the man's shoes. Mariko looked down on her and that marriage even before they were married. Hated him for sparing her life. and have been ice cold towrds here for the length of their marriage. That would drive any man bitter and resentful. which brings into question whether or not the physical abuse is a more recent occurrence or not (still not a good look and not something to be condoned either way); and if he had always acted harshly towards her in turn from the start or not, or if that was his defence mechanism toward's mariko's cold treatment towards her.
In the novel (I know they may have changed the motivations for the show) when Buntaro is speaking to Toranaga, he says that this is the first time he has ever struck Mariko. His suspicions about her and John pushed him over the edge and caused him to snap. So when John confronted him with his pistol and Buntaro puts down his sword and apologises, he is fully ready for John to kill him because not only is he ashamed of disrespecting Anjin's house, he feels deep shame about hitting Mariko. He's still a piece of shit for hitting her, but I like that they add context for his emotional struggle as it makes him more than a one-note villain who is only there to make Mariko more sympathetic.

Historical bits. Christianity invading Japan with colonialism was not really new. There're militant monks or the Monks Templer. There are many ronins, unemployed samurais during this civil war during the Sengoku time. Many were Buddhist so naturally gathered by faith instead of warlord. One of them was very militant and built a huge fortified Temple and village in the Hieyi Mountain. They were also looking become Shogun to rule Japan, too.
Toranaga, has been ploting and moving pieces on the chess board for many, many years. As Omi talked Taranaga's son into killing Ishido's men. So he convinced his good friend and Mariko's father to kill Kuroda. Notice Toranaga never said if Crimson Sky was to be today, tomorrow or next year. Carefull, Toranaga could be playing games with us as well. Kiku, her skill in reading the tension between Blackthorn and Mariko and putting words into Mariko's mouth to tell Blackthorn was so well done, a masterstroke. Cheers, Chris Perry.
Historical bits. Taiko's boss was always Nobunaga from his start. Ieyasu (Toranaga)'s boss was Lord Imagawa before Taiko or Taiko's boss Nobunaga.. Imagawa was the one Nobunaga killed at Okehazama. Ieyasu (Toranaga) pledged alliance to Nobunaga instead of fighting him to avenge his ex-lord. Imagawa. So, Akechi (Mariko's father), Taiko, and Ieyasu (Toranaga) served Nobunaga. Then Akechi assassinated or what have you killed Nobunaga. I don't know if this is anything to do with the reason why Lady Ochiba accused Toranaga for.

Mariko believed her marriage should be used to form a new alliance for her family or for Kuroda since he still had enemies and hadn’t unified Japan yet. Marrying her to someone who was already Kuroda’s ally serves no purpose.

600 koku in today's money: 1 koku is around 150KG of rice. The cheapest rice near me works out to £7.125 per 5KG -> divide that by 5 = £1.425 to get the 1KG equivalent and then times that by 150 = £213.75 to get 1koku of rice; multiply that by 600 to get 600koku works out to £128,250 per month worth of current day rice market values

Women in fuedial Japan were trained in martial arts to fight and defense especially wives and daughters of samurai that why you see mariko receiving martial training in the beginning of the episode with a naginata which a Japanese bladed pole arm used by women martial artist. Its the weapon mariko uses in the show, and is why when Ishido attacks tonnaga castle Bontro father left the women because it was more important to warn tonnaga. Plus women in Japan weren't seen as helpless at the time like in west where they need be saved by a knight in shinning armor women at this time kept a dagger on them at all times for self defense ND committing jigae female versions of sepeku. Can you please stop making fun of their hair styles is not nice and ignornorant of you I get you don't like it but you don't have to make fun of it, half bald head was popular during samurai era it was seen as an attractive hair cut its like a Mohawk or afro of today put it also served a practical use it made more easily to put on a samurai helmet as well made it easy for it stay on better. Lastly their were no therapy back then thats modern thing so telling Bontoro to seek counseling wouldn't have happen.
You are fetishizing old Japanese culture, lots of non-japans do that. You are getting offended on their behalf, they don't ask you too. They aren't innocent children who cannot defend themselves nor are they so fragile they cannot be made fun of. The hairstyles depicted here are not even used by modern Japanese, so nobody is even alive who has that hair. Many modern Japanese people will also laugh at such odd hairstyles by today's standard. I am Mexican and would never be offended by people laughing at the way we used to be, like when we wore crazy face piercings. Who are you to tell other people what they can and can't say? That's so arrogant and controlling. If you don't like these people, do not watch them, but never try to change people to how you want them to be. If everyone was like you the world would be a very boring place.
Mariko was saved because she was already married to Buntaro, he decided whether she she could commit sepuku and when, then she became catholic and it then became a sin so now Buntaro now has to sign off on someone else killing her or she could die in battle
She would want to commit Jiggae which is the female version of Sepuku, it was done a little differently than Sepuku instead of cutting open the belly and disenbowin themselves they would cut their necks which was less painful and quicker they would also tie their legs to look graceful. Jiggae was done in case where the castle would be over run by the enemy instead of being captured they would commit Jiggae because of they were captured they would faced rape, humiliation, it was also done if their lord or husband committed sepuku sometime a women would commit Jiggae alongside her husband and like sepuku you would need permission or to be commanded or in a dire situation.
Also she is Onna buegisha which translate to female martial artist or female warrior that mean she would also fight in battlefield and fight for lord and hoped to receive honorable death in battle. But the reason either way she want death either on the battlefield or by Jiggae but I feel she also wants revenge so she might be conflicted with wanting die and carrying on her dad fight.
