    These are one of the best syths ever made. They are astounding in their quality sound. They are superb with Brass and woodwinds
    instruments in particular. Streets ahead of Roland.

    Original guitar player 01w owner… just picked one of these up plus a USB to midi converter so I can use USB keyboards with it. This box is an upgrade on the 01 so I am stoked. I did not want to Lug my laptop around with my softsynths. I becoming a keyboard player and only play 80s 90s. .., enter yhe 05!

    What many people may not realize is that most of the patches on the X5DR are set up to respond to modulation 2 controller which controls the filter or other aspects of the sounds. Connect it to a keyboard controller with mod1 and mod2 wheel and it opens up a whole new world of sounds!!

    It is amazing how little the progress in the last 30years was! In the 90ies I had a KORG X3 and than I had a break of a few years. 2015 I was looking for a new synth and I was amazed that the todays synths don‘t sound much better than they sounded in the 90ies…

    • @looneyburgmusic
      @looneyburgmusic 2 роки тому +3

      That would be because PCM-based subtractive synthesis more or less reached the limits of what can be done with a string of numbers in a computer memory in the mid-late 2000s.
      The best example is the Yamaha Motif series, which have synth engines that be directly traced all the way back to late 80's, with the SY77/99 and SY85. The same could be said of both Korg and Roland's PCM based engines - while the "bells and whistles" might change with each new generation, (better effects for example), the core synthesis process has always remained the same.

      The newer Casios have tremendous sound now. Not just the cheesy presets like the early 90s. Depending on what instrument is played they have plucking and strumming for guitars and stringed instruments and breathing sounds with brass and woodwinds. The built-in speakers blew me away with their sound.

    This was my only rack for 10 years, and it still sounds great, although I'm a little burned out on the sounds by now. This is the Combi bank. There's another 100 sounds in the Program bank, plus a GM sound set. The weakest points of the 05R/W are the 32-note polyphony (less for many sounds) and the lack of any filter resonance. This means "wha-wha" and big sweep sounds are not really possible. But the strings, guitars, organ and brass are all excellent. Piano is weak, though.
    Despite the name, it's not really based on the bigger 01R/W. It's based on the "budget" Korg X5 board. They also released an X5DR rack a year later in 1995, which looks identical, but had 64-note polyphony and one more bank of sounds that could be loaded.
    For a relatively cheap rack in 1994, this was a nice unit. Korg finally added filter resonance with the Trinity and Triton lines a few years later.

    It's the filters, effects and programmability that define a synth's sound, and it's in these features that the LA2 system is superior.

    Corresponds to the successor of the M1, the X2, X3 Workstations and later X5 and X5D series of Synths.

  • @Stoney3K
    @Stoney3K 11 років тому

    The X5 series was pretty much the latest generation in AI2-only synths, pretty much rivalling the Roland D-series when it comes to the sound engine. The X3 is more geared towards arranging and a workstation-type keyboard, where the X5 s more suitable for a live gig since it's more compact and doesn't have a sequencer.
    I'd pit the X5D against a Roland D-50 when it comes to capabilties, but the one thing missing on the Korg synths is a resonant filter.

    • @littlebritain64
      @littlebritain64 10 місяців тому

      I saw some videos here on UA-cam that show how resonance can be obtained just editing one of the effects of the machine. It can also mimic a 303 squelchy resonance!!

    One of the MANY synths I've owned and wished I'd never parted with!!! Early on I was a huge roland fan. I mean to say thats all i wanted. Then i happened in one of these dirt cheap at a music store and said "ok why not". Fell in love from the first preset. I will find another one someday and will NOT part with it. Since then I've been the proud owner of the wavestation, poly 800, karma and many more. Still like roland as well as Yamaha. Each company has their strong points but I will always favor Korg over the rest.

  • @jdean9
    @jdean9 11 років тому +3

    Korg X5DR is one of my favorite synths ! I don't really understand where it fits into the Korg line of synths, I mean which synths it is similar too or if here are any other Korg synths that have the same sounds with better quality. But from the synths I have tried I find X5DR to be very different from earlier romplers like M1 and Wavestation, and also different compared to Triton and later synths. The sounds are very rich and interesting.

    • @geoffk777
      @geoffk777 3 роки тому +3

      It's a rack version of the X5 board. The X5 uses the same AI2 synthesis as the 01R/W (with no filter resonance). This was developed a bit more in the N Series units. The final rack of this Series is the N1R, which has more sounds, better polyphony and a better piano sample, so that's the best to get in this line. Korg changed engines for the Trinity and Triton, finally adding filter resonance. But everything from the 01R/W until the Trinity is all pretty similar (except the WaveStation).

    90 percent 🧀. Then out of nowhere, the Blues Harp is 🔥. No one makes a good blues Harp, almost worth the price of admission. I half want this box just to play harp with my MIDI 🎸.

    A shame you skipped 07 Layer Strings, one of the most impressive movie string presets I came across.

    I have one since 1995 nothing comes close to KORG Sounds

    Are these the preset sounds?

      @looneyburgmusic 10 років тому +2

      yes they are. The 05 shares the same rom set as the X3, and partly, the O1W.

      looneyburgmusic Thanks, and how would this compare to the nx5r in terms of sounds, and richness of sound?

      prinsje99 I've never used an NX, so I can only go on what the specs say. They both use the same AI2 synth engine, but the NX has a larger waveform memory then the 05, which is usually a good thing. There is also an XG daughter board, which the 05 does not have. So just from reading, the NX would probably top the 05.

      looneyburgmusic The NX5R was literally the last AI2-based synth that Korg made. it has all of the sounds of the 05R/W plus many others, with more presets, more polyphony and a better display. Even the piano sound is fairly decent, which isn't true on the 05R/W. You'd expect it to be better, as it's 5 years newer (1999 vs 1994). But the basic synthesis engine is the same, which is why many sounds are literally identical. Like the 05R/W, it lacks filter resonance, unfortunately.
      It's a nice unit, if you have one, but I'd get a (Trinity) TR-Rack or Triton Rack instead. Both of these are pretty cheap nowadays.

      geoffk777 Think you meant to tell prinsje99 that :-). My current "work" rig is made up of a Korg Trition, Yamaha Motif ES, and a Krog Krome :-)

    KORG 05R/W= KORG X2?

    • @kiskadar69

      The X2 includes every multisample of the 05R/W, plus a 2 MiB acoustic piano multisample.

    Sounds like a Korg x5dr

      Yes, same engine! The X5Dr is a little newer, double poliphony (64 voices instead 32 and probably a little more waveforms).
