    This was wonderful! Thanks so much.I bought an M1 shortly after its release and then had the ex module installed by a Korg technician. It stopped working a few years ago. A truely universal synthesizer workstation. Eventhough it was famous for it’s use in house and dance music, it also found it’s way to other genres like gothic darkwave music. There is even a version of Gary Numan’s Down in the park (a live version form the late 90’s) where the famous M1 piano sound is used. It’s instantly reconizable when you hear it. Some game music composers have also used the M1, I reconize the Universe sound in the intro of the Darkman videogame on the amiga and other sounds in Shadow Of The Beast. The Panflute sound reminds me a lot of Donkey Kong Country on the SNES. The M1’s legacy is everywhere and I quite enjoy using the M1 iPad app for it’s sounds. This synth made a huge impact on so many genres of music that it deserves the name “Universal Synth”.😇

      Even though i prefer analog synths im a huge fan of the M1 due to its fantastic sounds. All you needed back then to make a 90's hit was one of these and a Roland drum machine. For 1988 it was very ahead of its time.

      @jaggass 6 років тому +1

      People tended to use the TR-909 on 90's house, dance and pop songs because of it sounds and it fitted in so well. That's not to say that the Korg M1 drums sounds were bad though. The TR-808 sounds as unrealistic as it gets but its unique.

    Synths at the time had a real flavor. I own the MODX and several other newer synths, it's extremely modular and sounds awesome, but no patches really stand out. I started up my Old JV1080 and was still amazed at some of the sounds and how recognisable and unique they were, do an episode on it!

    I think every New Age musician during early 90's including me, was using the PAN FLUTE for almost every track. You'll find it on my Valley Of Joy CD on my channel. There were many ways it could be enhanced, with reverb, delay etc. and mixed with other sounds.

      Ivan Hernandez, I believe it was also used on a track from Belgium which was released on DRA Records in 1991 - it was called Altitude, by Defcon (Volume 3.) The drum break makes it sound a bit dated, but it's still a fantastic track!

    I had one and loved it until an airline butchered it. I always loved the M1's joystick vs. separate pitch/mod wheels- for whatever reason, Korg never went exactly back to that design, I thought the newer plastic-covered oval version felt cheaper. My favorite stock preset was probably 42, Overture. I also loved pitch-bendable drums!

    • @looneyburgmusic
      @looneyburgmusic 3 роки тому +1

      "Korg never went exactly back to that design" - That would be because the M1 JS design actually was horrible, and broke far more often than it should have. The current JS design, (Kronos, Krome), is much better.

      As I recall Joe Zawinul was behind the creation of the M1. My U20 had most of the sounds this had and I liked combining it with other synths and vst synths too, plus it made a good sample source for sound editors. Then one day the glue for the weighted keys started to melt.

    This keyboard seemed to encapsulate all of the functionality and tone quality we take for granted in the amateur level keyboards that Yamaha and Casio make today. Just to have a realistic piano sound was a marvel back then without spending thousands of dollars on a Jupiter or Juno. The interface, effects and synthesizer functions did not seem to be as integrated as well as they potentially could have been; as if they needed to invent a new type of computer and software language to properly enable ease of function. Nevertheless the available sounds were amazing. I was a teenager when this instrument came out, I played on some of my friends instruments but never owned one and later I briefly owned the 01 WD but never used it much being in College at the time. One day if I ever get a decent studio space I will get one as well as the Karma; not to shine up and admire but to use in composition and recordings.

    Got this in my high school, and after 30+ years I still enjoy designing interesting sounds out of its PCM and digitalized analog waveforms. Granted it's no true Analog or FM synth, but lots of time you can get close if you are good. You can isolate out the attack of PCM, which then can be combined with DWGS or PCM loop to create 'synth acoustic' sounds that can only be synthesized by 8-operator FM. It takes a creative mind(not preset player) to fully explore M1's potential !
