We all must remember that Van Halen began mainly as a party rock cover band. The confluence of influence, Roth was a big fan of big band and old school jazz. I remember reading an interview with Roth where he talked about seeking out old vinyl records and tapes while on tour. Every city was an opportunity to find some old music. Take note: They never performed or recorded another cover song in the Sammy era.
I LOVE this song. Diamond Dave showed his real talent for old school swing/jazz, call it what you will. He also covered That’s Life by Frank Sinatra and Just a Gigolo by the Inkspots after he left VH. Dave had the swag for swing
Mug no one minded this song being on the album back when it came out , especially when it became known that Eddie & Alex's dad was playing on the song. We all thought it was super cool they found a way to have their jazz clarinet playing father on their album.
Just recently listened to a podcast interview with Alex VH, and he said it was Dave's idea to bring Jan VH in. Alex said he was thankful to Dave for that
Loved this album , it was out soundtrack of the summer after it came out. It was a slap together cut n paste kinda thing, because the band had wanted to take a break and they released pretty woman as a single just for fun and then the record company said whoa. This is a hit you better come up with an album. It was the cheapest album they ever made even cheaper than their first album. It’s a gem.
You know Ed and AL'S father plays Clarinet in big bands , they told him they want him to play to play on an album,he said you play rock n roll, how will you Incorporate clarinet.Ed said we'll come with something
From what I remember, it was Roth’s idea to have dad VanHalen on this track. Eddie and Al said they were forever grateful that Dave brought this up. Also, they said their dad was extremely nervous, but the boys reassured him he’d do great.
Music from the Andy Griffith Show? That was Hillbilly music. This Van Halen song is more of a homage to the New Orleans Jazz music of the 20s and 30s. The music Louie Armstrong came out of was called Dixieland Jazz. Originally, he was famous for his cornet, and later trumpet, then his singing.
Van Halen had a humorous side to them. The Van Halen brothers dad was also in a big brass band which is what influenced the boys. That's what you're hearing now.
This was a joke song with Eddie and Alex's father Jan (Dutch name pronounced "yawn") playing clarinet, they were all just having fun, something for fans to laugh at and nothing serious to debate about it

The actually recorded “Apolitical Blues “ which is a Little Feat song on OU812
I think is was unreleased for some years
Entire band recorded this with Jan VH, their dad on clarinet
Correct. Not a transition album. Just different. As 1984 came after this, definitely not a transition.
Ed and Alex's father played the clarinet on this song
What a great lil unserious jam by the boys! Always loved it

This is precisely what made VH so unique..the best!
Every album in those early years had some fun, off-the-wall, oddball thing on it that was an unexpected gem.

He like to scat I think he did like Louie
I've always loved BBB. It was a perfect way to give Jan Van Halen a bit of spotlight.

A band with humor and a broad appreciation of music.
Worlds greatest band right there they were so diverse but could kick serious ass when needed!!!

I loved it when they would throw an oddball track on the albums, Big bad bill, happy trails..

This came out in '82, Dave released a solo EP in '85 called Crazy From The Heat. It sounded nothing like VH.
One of the very few Van Halen covers my band ever did
All in the family
Benny Goodman was a great Big Band leader and awesome on the clarinet. Would love to hear you react to some Big Band music…
A total of four van halen's have been in the band
VH boys raised on swing jazz. I borrowed my profile name from this track.
JVH crushing
Listen to "I'm your ice cream man " from their 1st album.
This song was an original in nineteen twenty four
❤
No notification Again UA-cam so whacked. I used to sing this to my ex name Billy
