Yeah, I remember how bummed out I was in the 90's after he kind of faded from the spotlight while all those super depressing grunge bands from Seattle somehow took over the music industry and made us forget to be happy.
David Lee Roth actually plays the acoustic guitar in the beginning of the song. When they played it live he would sometimes play it on an electric guitar with a clean tone.
Ed’s guitar is mixed so that the main, “dry”, guitar is panned to the left and the plate reverb is to the right. So yes it moves from your left to the right.
David Lee Roth really wasn't a heavy metal singer, which was one of the reasons VH producer Ted Templeman had a hard time accepting him as the frontman at first. But he could've easily been a blues or soul singer. Somehow, he figured out how to channel that soul into a whole new brand of hard rock frontman that would become the standard by which all other metal frontmen were measured through the early 90's.
This is a cover....originally recorded by John Brim in 1968. That's DLR on the acoustic guitar in the first part, BTW. He did that on a few of their songs. This is a remaster...so IDK how much they did to it but when they recorded it in the studio, the band basically played as if they were performing a live show.....much more setup than post processing. For instance, engineer Donn Landee set up Eddie's guitar so that the right channel microphone was on his amp and the left channel microphone was in an echo room across from it.
YOU’RE ON! I’ll bet you 10 push-ups that by the end of the video, he mentions Little Dreamer is either tied with On Fire, or stays at #1. And not girl push-ups either LOL!!
2:28 he is about to have his ears blown away!❤ Headphones is the only way to go!!!! VH has been my fave band since 1980 or 81!!! I was like 5-6th grade. Only bad thing about a VH song is they are too short!
I was seventeen years old when That album came out.I put that on smoked big fatty put on the headphones Listen to the entire album and all I could say was oh hell.Yeah this ain't mushy love ballad and the album every song kicks total ass
The guitar you hear moving to the right in your headphones is a recording technique called panning. You can take a mono track (one channel audio) and shift it from the left speaker to the right speaker in the mix by panning the track. It's a very basic effect that is lost on most modern music because everyone records in stereo (dual channel audio) now. But back then they employed both styles into a mix to create effects like this...
“I can point for you and go: right there we're imitating Eric Clapton; right there I'm imitating vocally David Bowie; right there is Bruce Springsteen… but this is how you create a signature sound. If you're lucky to have it, there's no way around it." David Lee Roth
That guitar sound moving like that was done using Plate Reverb in post production. This song shows Eddie’s roots in the blues. Magnificent! One of my favorite songs ever
Actually thats David Lee Roth on the acoustic guitar. If you listen to it closely you can hear how sloppy his playing is cause theres a lot of string buzz going on. Eddie was much more precise in his playing. When playing it live DLR would sometimes play an electric guitar with a clean tone.
Dave was tuned to open E. He also played acoustic on tour, remember the "Dave-sickle". But I also remember that bedazzled 335 he used. God, they were so fuckin good.
Dave was heavily influenced by those classic R&B masters! He's not shy about that. I'm loving your reaction to this phenomenal album! I remember when I first heard it. We dissected it too! 😂
I heard this song in 1979 before you were probably born ! And if you wasn't spending your time listening to Rap songs repeating the same lyrics over and over again , you could have heard it sooner
My high school coach just passed away. Best HS in Wisconsin coach Ron Davies God Speed Coach you were a true Mentor to us all and made us better Humans!
every song on this album is a masterpiece. definitely my fav album of theirs. it was all so new to the world. Fair Warning 2nd best. Most VH fans don't just listen to one song, they play their albums straight through. Like it's just one long song. Sowe all know what the next tune is. I remember going to the Atomic Punks. They are a VH cover band that had Ralph and Russ from Steel Panther in it. They would stop the song on that last "Guaranteed to Satisfy." and ask people in the audience to try and sing it. then you realize that DLR was no slouch!! no-one came close.
Michael Anthony is probably the best singer in the bunch as far as pure vocals go but David has his own unique, one of a kind voice with a dose of personality and ego thrown in to give Van Halen their signature sound vocally. Michael is actually singing a lot of the high harmonies on their songs. Plus, David owned the PA System without which they could not perform. 😂
There is a Van Halen song that I see never gets any love either on a reaction or even on the Radio The Full Bug off Diver Down. It's very upbeat with hints of blues tone to it. Very underrated song.
I think the way the records were mixed at Sunset Sound Recordings, were to have the echo chamber/reverb panned to one side. So you hear Ed in one ear, but then it trails off on the other side.
One of John Brim's best known songs, “Ice Cream Man,” has a backstory worthy of the blues and the Mighty Van Halen brought this awesome song back to life with one hell of a kick! It’s a great cover song and any cover song Van Halen did was better than the original.
All Van Halen albums up until Diver Down were recorded with the guitar paned far left and the guitar reverb paned far right to give it that big "live" sound. It's brilliant engenieering.
Quick note: VH didn't write this one. The man who did was happy to let them cover it and lived Very well for many, many yrs off his royalties. Look it up, it's a fun story. And true. Peace Mr. Mugify, love your reactions to my all time fave band.
The song was written by a black man named John Brim. You can find it on UA-cam. You should check out Van Halen's cover of Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now) off the Diver Down album.
“Like an apple, like a cherry, like a peach, like a plumb”…… You just can’t beat late 70s and early 80s VH. Nothing like it at all. Such unique rock with a prodigy on guitar.
Just fun Mugs. Shows you what a riot & sense of humour the original version of the band had. And that spice in the rice came directly from David Lee Roth. Musicianship....always top notch.
What your hearing in the headphones bud is the guitar is panned hard right and the reverb from the guitar is panned hard left. That's how the whole album was mixed. stay frosty stay safe
Old school analog recordings... take the balance knob on your stereo and turn all the way to the left, and you get more bass with a little guitar bleed over. Turn the knob all the way to the right and you get more guitar with bass bleed over. This is how us old school cats would learn how to play before things like UA-cam came out
Here’s a Must for your list! Dave’s solo gig had some big hits after VH. The one you’ll like, Tobacco Road I copied this from the web- Tobacco Road by David Lee Roth was written by John D. Loudermilk and was first recorded and released by John D. Loudermilk in 1960.
Heck yeah!!! 6 minutes and I'm here...well. now 7 minutes 😂 This song is sooooo GOOD Oh my! First to comment as well😮 I'll let others to explain the meaning. I've heard 2 versions
I love how it starts off sounding like a black man singing the Blues. I grew up in the early 80s driving my Chevy Nova as a teen listening to VH. This is my favorite song.
David Lee Roth brought a sense of fun that set VH apart. That, and Eddie’s guitar.
very good point!
Yes, great point indeed. I think they lost that element after the break-up in 1985.
@@BigPairOdiceYeah, whenever Hagar tried to be funny he usually ended up just being crass. See Poundcake....
@@Bikebrh And Good Enough, Summer Nights, Sucker in a 3 Piece, etc.
Yeah, I remember how bummed out I was in the 90's after he kind of faded from the spotlight while all those super depressing grunge bands from Seattle somehow took over the music industry and made us forget to be happy.
I get a kick out of people discovering the mighty VAN HALEN 🤘
I absolutely love watching reactors lose their minds over Van Halen!!
You can make a career out of reestablishing and replaying Van Halen music because that’s so awesome they were.
Best swing rock n roll band ever.
Raised on jazz. The VH shuffle.
you got that right!!! Swing, Boogie, shuffle!!!
That guitar solo is one of my favorites!!!
David Lee Roth actually plays the acoustic guitar in the beginning of the song. When they played it live he would sometimes play it on an electric guitar with a clean tone.
I never knew this.
DAVESICKLE guitar!
Ed’s guitar is mixed so that the main, “dry”, guitar is panned to the left and the plate reverb is to the right. So yes it moves from your left to the right.
One of the best live studio recordings ever.
When this album dropped it changed the plane of existence for everyone that heard it. Blew our god damn minds.
The day Eddie laid down the solo for that song was a special day for the electric guitar.
David Lee Roth really wasn't a heavy metal singer, which was one of the reasons VH producer Ted Templeman had a hard time accepting him as the frontman at first. But he could've easily been a blues or soul singer. Van Halen The most ultimate rock band of all time R.I.P. EVH
The Mighty Van Halen is the greatest American Rock Band of all time and we were truly blessed to grow up listening to them.❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is a cover....originally recorded by John Brim in 1968.
That's DLR on the acoustic guitar in the first part, BTW. He did that on a few of their songs.

I turned 18 when this album came out….wore it out
This guy is gonna love “Take your Whiskey Home” when he gets to it
Dave was a very charismatic front man. his delivery was phenomenal!
Another goosebump tasty mindblowing guitar solo from the best
Who wants to bet that “On Fire” becomes his new favorite off of this album when he hears it… any takers?
Those harmonies will slay Mugs! 😂

@@stringtheoryguitars4952 alllllllrighty then!!! We have a bet!!!
Ted Templeman was a fantastic producer back in the day who produced many classic rock albums.
I've told my wife for years this has to be played at my funeral 🤣

Headphones is the only way to go!!!!
VH has been my fave band since 1980 or 81!!! I was like 5-6th grade.
Only bad thing about a VH song is they are too short!
Michael Anthony / Bass ( backing vocals ) is so underrated. And still playing / singing today with Sammy Hagar
always loved him but not fagar.
This is my favorite Van Halen song!
HERE FOR IT 💯💯💯💯💯 thanks man 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻appreciate you 🙏

Great reaction. Van Halen is my all time favorite band. They are all bangers off the first 6 albums.
That guitar sound moving like that was done using Plate Reverb in post production. This song shows Eddie’s roots in the blues. Magnificent! One of my favorite songs ever

You're nailing David's lyrical influences. He's spoken of Ray Charles and James brown as influences throughout his early career
The solo on this song is awesome. And Dave’s attitude and bravado really bring it on all VH songs. Great pairing
"Take Your Whiskey Home" is VH at their shredding best.
Dedicate one to the ladies..... classic.
CLUTCH "DC SOUND ATTACK"
Little known fact that tight leather pants allow you an additional half an octive in your vocals allowing for better harmonies 😂
Dave was heavily influenced by those classic R&B masters! He's not shy about that. I'm loving your reaction to this phenomenal album! I remember when I first heard it. We dissected it too! 😂
This album was recorded live. One of the best bands on the planet.
One of my all time fav Eddie solos ever.
I heard this song in 1979 before you were probably born !
And if you wasn't spending your time listening to Rap songs repeating the same lyrics over and over again , you could have heard it sooner
It's recorded in stereo, most were back in the day. That's why they're able to roll from one to the other on the board.
These guys changed the world in 1978.
The Greatest Band Ever!!!
Used to sing this at karaoke bars. Ladies went crazy.
Came out in my junior year.....headphones on.....layin on the bed absorbed in the music.
My high school coach just passed away. Best HS in Wisconsin coach Ron Davies God Speed Coach you were a true Mentor to us all and made us better Humans!
I haven't heard Ice Cream Man in forever! Thanks for reacting!! ❤🤘

Michael Anthony was a beast on the Bass. Alex was a beast on drums, David was a beast on vocals and Eddie a beast on guitar--- together it was magic.

Blues man John Brim originally recorded The Ice Cream Man for Chess Records on May 4, 1953 but it wasn't released until 1968.
I see you smiling, you little devil!!!Lol, great song❤❤❤
my favorite EVH solo
I'm so upset I missed you live but I can't wait to see your reaction one of my favorites
One of John Brim's best known songs, “Ice Cream Man,” has a backstory worthy of the blues and the Mighty Van Halen brought this awesome song back to life with one hell of a kick! It’s a great cover song and any cover song Van Halen did was better than the original.
You might not know it yet,but pretty sure you're going to fall in the Early Van Halen fan camp. Much love, for the reactions, bruh! ❤
Can’t get more fun than this!
Excellent reaction. Very bluesy and soulful.
All Van Halen albums up until Diver Down were recorded with the guitar paned far left and the guitar reverb paned far right to give it that big "live" sound. It's brilliant engenieering.
Thank you for the flashbacks
I think what you’re hearing is the pan echo effect. Straight guitar sound on one side and the echo of that sound panned to the other side.
Ted Templeman was a genius, if you ever heard how bad Roth is live, it's amazing how Ted got him to sound halfway decent on these old albums.....
VH was a backyard and High School gym party band in pasadena. I miss the covers, they were originals to me.
A great live concert is Van Halen Us festival in 1983
Quick note: VH didn't write this one. The man who did was happy to let them cover it and lived Very well for many, many yrs off his royalties. Look it up, it's a fun story. And true.

Swing in the key of Frosty
checkin in...
So much fun- summer time, The Beach Boys' harmonies, and Chuck Berry's bluesy rock n roll guitar!!!
I’ve never heard anyone equate David Lee Roth to James Brown, Screaming Jay Hawkins and Ray Charles. I want to thank you for broadening my knowledge.
This was a fan favorite and I absolutely loved hearing it performed live!!! DLR was a show out, but in a good way!!
That bass!
Fire!
VH rocks!!!😎👍
“Like an apple, like a cherry, like a peach, like a plumb”……
You just can’t beat late 70s and early 80s VH. Nothing like it at all. Such unique rock with a prodigy on guitar.
Appreciate you reacting to all these songs. Although you stopped in the middle of my favorite VH solo ever.
Diamond David Lee Roth was the quintessential definition of toxic masculinity before the term ever existed LOL
I just had to learn that one as soon as it came out,fun guitar shit!
This is an old Roy Rogers song.... Classic
This is the funniest Van Halen song ever😂
That bass tho

Great reaction. Thanks.
4:20 the guitar is panned but the reverb is stereo so it's hitting a few milliseconds afterward on the right in sort of a ghost image
U said Big Daddy Kane................nice
Presses play. Wonders how long it will be before Mugnify realizes the song is NOT about ice cream ;) .
Nobody does harmony like VH anymore.
Here’s a Must for your list!

GREAT JOB!!!

This is another great Van Halen cover. The original is a straight blues tune by John Brim.

Ah yes, when music was fun.

This song is sooooo GOOD
Oh my! First to comment as well😮
I'll let others to explain the meaning. I've heard 2 versions

Hey Coach!....
This is from John Brim 1953 bluesman
Best Eddie solo! Nothing else is quite like this solo.
I love how it starts off sounding like a black man singing the Blues.
I grew up in the early 80s driving my Chevy Nova as a teen listening to VH. This is my favorite song.
What position did you play? I was slot receiver and special teams. 1980's, so old guy here.
The VH journey sounds fun but the destination is high school hell
