  • Here is a summary of the text:
The video provides instructions on how to backwash a pool filter with diatomaceous earth (DE). It shows a Jandy DE60 filter and explains that backwashing involves reversing the water flow inside the filter to remove trapped debris.
To backwash, the pump is turned off and the valve is switched from "filter" to "backwash." Water is run through in backwash mode for 1-2 minutes until it clears, repeating this process 3-4 times.
Once the water runs clear, the valve is switched back to "filter." DE powder is then added according to the filter size - 6 lbs for a 60 square foot filter. The DE is poured directly into the filter tank to be mixed and screened during filtration.
The key steps outlined are to backwash repeatedly switching between modes to thoroughly clean the filter, and to add the full recommended amount of DE rather than insufficient amounts. Proper backwashing and DE dosing are emphasized as important for filter performance and preventing damage.

    Most average 30-45 days
But the best measure is to monitor the pressure as it climbs 8-10 psi above normal, also a good indicator is to watch the water flow in the pool. When it slows down and waterfalls trickle then it’s a good indication, the filter needs to be cleaned or backwashed

Great video, thanks Steve! You say that if the jets push DE out, you got a filter problem. I have a DE 60 filter just like this one, and the builder said the skimmer return valve needs to be closed before DE is added, else the powder WILL squirt out the skimmer return jets. So I'm unclear on which it is.

If you have a pool cleaner that shares the plumbing from the pump before it goes into the filter, then yes he is right. But otherwise I don’t see how that is necessary. If there is a problem with the DE filter, then the water will become cloudy and you can usually see the DE powder coming back through the pool jets right after you backwash.

Maybe just a coincidence, or that AI system that listens to every thing we say is crazy.

How often for a backwash? And the reason for it?

The frequency of backwashing a filter depends on several factors, such as the type of filter, the size of the pool or spa, and the level of usage. However, as a general guideline, it is recommended to backwash a sand filter once every 1-2 weeks, and a DE (diatomaceous earth) or cartridge filter every 4-8 weeks.
The reason for backwashing is to remove accumulated debris, dirt, and other particles that the filter has trapped during the filtration process. Over time, these particles can clog the filter, reducing its efficiency and restricting water flow. Backwashing involves reversing the flow of water through the filter, dislodging and flushing out the trapped debris. This helps to maintain optimal filtration and ensure clean and clear water in your pool or spa.

Keep a eye on the pressure. When it jumps up 8-10lbs or you notice the he water flow slowing down then it’s time to backwash
