The OP might not have been clear enough but the ARSONIST was the one saying their ideas were stolen. He was just crazy (and yeah the studio is Kyoani, I will mourn forever...)
Love the discussion, heavily agree with what y'all saying about the themes. I interpreted the ending is that she's also continuing her eork in her friend's memory b/c she still kept up with her work even when they were apart. Someone also pointed out that when the MC was talking on the phone, she wasn't satisfied with her assistance - always finding something wrong with them - because deep down she just wants her partner back 😢
This story is really close to the author. Fujimoto made this based on his experiences as a Manga artist (it is not based on him), but he tried to convey the reasons someone draw, why artists create. There are some interviews with Fujimoto where he talks about how he heard his parents say something along the lines of: "i'm worried about Tatsuki, if he keeps drawing he might become a neet". Fujimoto's works repeat the "i want to be normal" desire. It was a reality for him as he grew up in a rural area where there was a dominant group and he was often asked "why are you still drawing?". In look back there's no fantasy elements, other than the yonkoma that Kyomoto drew (the what-if was just a visual representation of the strip manga). At the end of the day, a life story about how it is important to look back and keep creating. There's other one shot that i would love to see animated by this movie crew, "Goodbye, Eri" that's my fav Fujimoto manga. There were some other Fujimoto's works hints during the movie (and the manga), there was also a little hint of Spy X Family characters on the magazine (spy x family author was Fujimoto's Assistant, dandadan author was also an Assistant, Hell's paradise author was another assistant). I'm glad that you talked lots about the movie.
I think there is definitely closure. Fujino continued drawing after calling drawing useless at the grief of Kyomoto's death. She's looked back at all their good times, and continued moving forward for Kyomoto, instead of quitting like the first time her passion to draw was challenged. Its only conjecture on the part of us fans, buts it really feels like we get a glimpse of Fujimoto's psyche after he wrapped up Chainsaw Man Pt.1 while his talented assistants all moved on to their own successful projects like Dandadan, Spy x Family, Hell's Paradise. Look Back and Goodbye Eri might've been his own Kyomoto training arc to prove that he could also "become better at art" on his own.
Bro this movie broke me for like 2 weeks when it came out lmao I can't stop thinking about the story. It's a masterpiece. Tatsuki Fujimoto the mangaka of Chainsaw Man is really the goat at making one-shot. Goodbye Eri and now this. “change someone's life even if it's in a small way possible” is really what drives Fujino all this time, it's for Kyomoto and nothing else. But after looking back, now she realizes that she can change other lives just like Kyomoto by making mangas 😭
Some important background info: about two years before this story was published, a man set fire to Kyoto Animation studios, killing about 35 people and injuring another 30 people. The arsonist claimed they were plagiarizing his works, but it’s likely he was delusional. It was one of the biggest losses of life in the anime industry to ever happen. (And gun ownership is difficult in Japan, so stabbing (or an ax) is a more common form of public violence). You might remember Kyoto Animation for making The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad, K-On!, Free!, Hibike Euphonium, Violet Evergarden, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, and others.
Kyomoto is an awkward, truant girl with a childish excitement over meeting someone she idolized. Y'all doing her dirty calling her this kis creepy lmaooo
I think that abrupt escalation is a reflection of real life. KyoAni was burned down years ago and 30+ people died because some guy thought that KyoAni plagiarized his work. Innocent people doing their job and minding their own business... and their lives get cut short by one person's delusion. This stuff can happen. It's tragic. And I think that 4-panel manga at the end was blank because it never actually happened. No magic or timelines. This is still the reality we live in. And that argument between Kyomoto and Fujino during the split... in my interpretation, part of the reason for that really *was* so Kyomoto can help Fujino better. There was a quick flashback of them walking and Kyomoto talked about wanting to get better. She lamented not being able to illustrate the backgrounds fast enough. So her going to art school is partly because of Fujino. But I don't think the things that Fujino said came from a bad place. She just didn't want Kyomoto to leave. It's just that Fujino seems to have a tendency to not be direct about her feelings. Like how she lied about her reason for quitting art back in primary school, or how she never told Kyomoto that she was the reason she started drawing again. In the same way, Fujino was spouting all these excuses to discourage Kyomoto from leaving.
I remember reading the manga a few years back, but was fuzzy on remembering the ending. I saw you guys were covering it (thanks) and decided to watch it on Amazon before watching this. It was just as moving as I remembered!
If you listen to the way the two protagonists speak with Japanese ears, you will notice that Fusino speaks in a pretentious way like a city girl, always dressed up to hide her true feelings. In contrast, Kyoumoto speaks with a full Yamagata accent, and although he is not a good speaker, it is clear that she speaks straight from her feelings and does not hide his true feelings. Kyoumoto struggles to squeeze out a few words, ‘Fusino sensei!’ and called out to her which gave birth to the manga artist Fujimoto Kyou. When I saw this film in the cinema, I could not hold back my tears. I look forward to watching your channel in the future.
Aside from the face value story i think its also about how fujimoto the author is told through fujino and kyomoto. How he killed his dream of improving/making visual arts because being a mangaka is already taking too much from him but despite giving it up that artistic side of him will never go away just like kyomoto will always be a part of fujino (even in the alternate timeline they still connect by art)
I watched this in theater with my friend who was just sat there no pre context, not really getting it. I, on the other hand, was holding back tears. This was a nice movie, i hope "Goodbye, Eri" also gets made into a movie cause that would be so amazing. I like that both of their names combine to become Fujimoto and that she continued to use their combined names after becoming famous.
Fun fact : nearing the end, fujino was drawing the main character of Chainsaw Man part 2. also, the said mc was based on both these girl too, both design and personality.
as a mangaka and animator, what I feel like most casual watcher dont notice is that the work towards becoming good like each other was never archivable, one is trying to draw characters and one is trying to draw backgrounds, so while one is admiring the level of detail for the backgrounds because they cannot draw backgrounds the other is admiring the story telling and characters which they cannot do since they draw only background.
dosnt feel like an ending? well thats the thing, its not the end, you keep marching forward.. for Kyomoto ( OH you thought she stopped? no no thats a days work and its time to go home and sleep lol you cant finish a manga in a day lol )

I feel like the music could have been better placed during the movie and some parts of the story felt rushed (even thought it was a copy of the manga). @@sharpen193 It was good, but not something ro be bawling your eyes out. I think that the final part of the mocie felt a little confusing or her death felt random? Anyway, was ok, but is not gonna win any animation event.
@@chok1169 still it is a beacon of hope that maybe one day they adapt my favorite piece of work of Fujimoto, Sayonara Eri.
Also is a W because a lot of artists will resonate with this story and just like me, get motivated to improve.
Btw 8/10 is alright for me. Maybe because this is an one-shot it may be harder to translate into a movie.
@@chok1169 People just connect to different things, You may not see why its special but to others it is. Why tear down others who enjoy it?
@@Wispy2543 Everything can be special to someone, butt objectively the movie was an 8 or 8.5 and is not gonna win international prices as a movie. Did I say anything against people who enjoyed the movie?
