Don't look back in anger
Rainy scenes are typically seen as sad moments, but when I was a child, it was something fun and exciting. The scene where Fujino runs through the rain perfectly captures that pure sense of happiness.
I watched the movie in a local theater and I remember the only thing I texted my friend afterwards was "I'm so glad art exists" I didn't immediately cry in the theater, but in the train home it just hit me and tears started rolling. Amazing Movie
Kyomoto's death in the story is a direct reference to the KyoAni arson incident in Japan where a mentally deranged guy killed several Kyoto studio staff members. I remember Fujimoto getting little criticism from japanese audience due to the reference but it's such a vital commentary on overzealous fanbases & plagiarism in general note: the KyoAni arson instigator finally got served justice this year🙏
Today, the shameless anime has appealed again. They deserve a thousand deaths. I have never been so angry. I hope for a fair trial.
Hello, I'm Japanese and I'm truly happy you reacted to this amazing movie! Just to share my bits of knowledge, this manga/movie is believed to be related to the case that happened to Kyoto Animation, one of the famous animation production studios in Japan, located in Kyoto. (Famous for Violet Evergarden, a silent voice, etc). There was a case called the Kyoto Animation arson attack in which the studio was set on fire by a man and many animators working on the day were killed in 2019. The title of "Look Back" was believed to have originated from the song "Don't Look Back in Anger" by Oasis since the original manga had the word "Don't" hidden at the beginning of the manga and also "In anger" hidden at the last part of the manga which creates "Don't Look Back in Anger" by combining with the title. Therefore, it could be taken as a message that we shouldn't look back on the tragedy with madness or cause another tragedy with our anger. In the manga, this "Look back" triggered Fujino to lock back on the past and moment with Fujino and remember why she drew. Moreover, it represents both characters' growth by looking at each other's backs and admires. I heard that as soon as this manga was released and was seen by a lot of the audience, it also caused controversy as some lines reminded of the case and apparently were deleted, although I respect Fujino for illustrating such an amazing manga. I apologize if I made any awkward sentences because I'm not used to writing English sentences but hopefully, this information makes this movie more enjoyable for you! Again, thank you for your entertaining video!
This story is written using the techniques of Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" to depict the tragedy of Kyoto Animation. It is a story that tries to save the real world tragedy in fiction. However, this story shows us how to accept the unchanging reality and move forward.
look back means, don't look back at your past with anger and regret however it was, always search for good memories in them the manga starts with "Don't" and ends with "with anger"
It's lonely to work hard to get better at something you love. Little by little, every day you build up the building blocks. It's a fragile and unstable thing that can easily crumble with a single word from someone around you. That's why the greatest joy in life is finding someone who recognizes your efforts. How happy you would be if that person was someone you aspire to be. I was so overcome with tears during Fujino's skipping scene that I couldn't see what was ahead of me. Efforts are long, fragile, fleeting, and wonderful!
maybe only Japanese understand, Kyomoto talks with an accent peculiar to the Touhoku religion. That's sooo adrable.
19:11 Well the look back is a reference of a song (Dont look back in anger). You can only catch it in the manga, different pages has the whole message.
It's actually in this film as well. You can see "In Anger" in the last scene of this movie, when Fujino goes back to drawing shark kick. It's in the drawer at the left.
Fujimoto said that when he was growing up it was a small town so everyone had to be a certain way, it's why kids bullied others for being otakus or whatever
She didnt see crazy improvement in 2 years, but that's the fun part. Most people don't see crazy improvements in 2 years. It took me almost 7 years to get to a good enough level to be considered professional, even then I am majorly carried by my story telling abilities. But if you're acquainted with art, Fujino DID improve in those 2 years. She improves in those 2 years, and it is very noticeable if you compare her first comic shown with second comic shown. It's a very realistic depiction of how much nurturing and work is needed for ones craft
I saw this movie at a Japanese cinema. Coincidentally, the day I went was the day the Kyoto Animation massacre happened. When I realized this and then realized that the movie included a memorial scene for that tragedy, my heart was doubly torn. 😭💔 Anyway, it's just a masterpiece.
Regarding Fujino's last words to Kyomoto being angry ones, I think the fact that Fujino still had Kyomoto's number on her phone long after graduating may point to them still having contact with each other even though they parted ways. That's what I hope, at least.
That was a great movie❤❤❤ I watched this movie crying in the theater. But so many people in the theater were so quiet that I wondered if they were breathing, and the only sound I could hear was the sound of the movie, so I watched the movie without making any noise.😭😭😭 I'm glad you watched the movie❤❤❤
27:52 "the chainsawman reference is so crazy"... this work written and drawn by Fujimoto, author of chainsawman... tells his story, before becoming what he is now... his parents told him to stop drawing etc... kyomo's death is a reference to the fire of kyoto animation which happened because of a guy... fujimoto like kyomoto wanted to go to an art school etc... the initials of FUJIno and the endings of kyoMOTO put together they make up the name FUJIMOTO... in a few words as I said this is the story of sensei fujimoto through these two personalities : fujino and kyomoto...
Fujino said, "If I hadn’t gotten her out of her room," but she couldn't imagine a world where she had never met Kyomoto😢I'm glad that Fresh-san cried as much as I did over this movie 🤭Thank you for your reaction!🇯🇵
Fujino's story from 6th grade is very familiar, and is similar to most young people who want to pursue an artistic career, especially manga artists. In Japan, although Mangaka is a long-standing profession, most artists who pursue this profession also encounter many difficulties in the early stages, especially due to the influence of those around them, because for them, pursuing a career in drawing manga is something a bit unusual. In my country, the manga industry is not as developed as in Japan, so like Fujino, I was also hindered quite a lot. I was also someone who was prevented by my family from pursuing a career in drawing, and I also thought about giving up, but now I still pursue my passion, so when I watched the first part of Look Back, I really sympathized, and I'm sure many artists will sympathize with Fujino. :3 As for Fujino's development process, it's true that for someone who didn't go to school and just practiced drawing, 2 years alone wouldn't have allowed him to develop much, xD I see myself in Fujino when I watch this part.
2:50 Ask any kid to make up a story for you and sit back with a bucket of popcorn. You have no idea the weird stuff they come up with. This is tame in comparison 8:00 You know, we old people tend to forget that these protagonists are kids. Kids make mistakes that we know from EXPERIENCE are dumb. Because they're kids and still need to learn and grow

I tell you, i was not okay after watching this movie. This just made my tears fall out of nowhere. But that just speaks volume to how amazing the story is. W FUJIMOTO.
The characters in this work are strangely realistic because Fujino is Tatsuki Fujimoto who became a manga artist, and Kyomoto is Tatsuki Fujimoto in the past who loved drawing. Tatsuki Fujimoto uses the KyoAni Incident as his subject matter, but he is actually drawing on his own feelings as a successful commercial mangaka.
This movie… is- less than an hour. LESS THAN AN HOUR- and it still has me in tears 20 minutes after watching it and while I type this comment. I don’t understand any of the context beyond just what’s in this film itself, other than maybe being based on the KyoAni arson attack, but that should speak volumes. Fujimoto cried at the premiere of this film because he never thought that someone might appreciate and be able to capture his work like this (which tells us a bit of how he felt about CSM's adaptation so far, I guess).

I watched this without knowing what it was all about or any of the references. It hit so hard emotionally. Please please watch the end credits. The scene transitions into evening before it ends. So gorgeous and sad
It's a great movie, beautiful movie, the best. The ending is the most Kyle Broflovski ass "you know, I learned something today" ending I've seen in a movie though, and we don't like that, we don't like that folks

Don't look back in anger
