It’s not as magical as you think.. internists start out 160- 240k depending on community health, teaching/government positions vs private. For those fortunate enough to open their own practices, almost zero income first 2-3 years (one must build up the patients’ roster, collections of insurance pay can lag up to 18 months, staff’s pay, rent, equipments). If student loans are involved, currently, for 200k at 6% interest, about $1400 per month and not tax deductible. Malpractice with tail coverage can be up to 18k per year. Disability insurance about 1.2- 2k per month depending on age. In the end, if one works for a group, monthly take home after 401k, health insurance deductible, etc about 10k. After all the other post tax obligations such as childcare/student loans/mortgage on a modest home/car payment for a Toyota/bills and gas, one would have enough left for a nice dinner once - twice per month or save up for one modest vacation per year. Don’t do primary care if money is the driver for your passion in doing medicine
They seem like such a nice couple. And as a resident myself I have huge respect for them to be able to live together because I would imagine it as terribly stressful to have a partner in medicine

It's fine it is only for residency once they start attending they will more than double their income and will only grow over time. You don't have to feel bad.
Residents are essentially govt employed, their salaries comes from the govt and they control how many residency programs there are and how much they get paid.

Someone recommended this episode to us because we live right over the bridge in south Jersey and have a podcast for young adults. This was a great episode! I love seeing couples be resourceful and living within their means. They still had goals and didn’t let debt hold them back from living their lives.
John Lee that’s true ... although I guess my point is I would love to see less wealthy folks who are working hard, using their money smartly, and looking for career advancement opportunities. I think that would be very inspiring for people in lower income brackets who feel they have no way to save. You can still be financially responsible with a lower salary, although indeed it’s much harder to “make it”
Sometimes people in the comments confuse me. There are people saying they are getting paid trash- they each make 58k a year with earning potential over 200k MINIMUM in a few years. I make 45k as a non profit therapist and would LOVE to make 58k. Do people not in helping professions realize how little we make especially at the beginning?

These guys are so put together.
There is something wrong if you have to donate blood and being a test dummy for MRI tests in order to get through medical school. Like really really wrong.
I agree the greedy medical doctors that teach at the schools need to take pay cuts to lower the costs.
It’s not the doctors who teach at medical schools who need lower salaries it’s the administrative staff, there’s a lot of employees that go into a medical school.
Wow Graham is going to love these two, or hate them because there's nothing to criticize lol

@@andresamartins26 she probably had four jobs throughout med school at different points. I doubt she simultaneously held all four all four years of med school...
*Much needed medical field couple during the pandemic!* 💃
To be honest her *student loans* aren't that *bad* given she'll make more money in the next 6 - 7 years and she's sharing expenses, so I'm excited if you guys ever do a follow-up, I think they're smart and do awesome!!💖✌
I'd be interested to see their finances when they start attending.

It's fine it is only for residency once they start attending they will more than double their income and will only grow over time. You don't have to feel bad.
Well, they are at the start of their career. Potential salary is high enough.
Residents are essentially govt employed, their salaries comes from the govt and they control how many residency programs there are and how much they get paid.

This was my favorite couple you featured on here. Great story!

This was a great episode and very realistic. The only thing that made me pause was her $91 food budget, but then he said he spends $270 on both them - that makes sense. I would love to see a follow up on them. Thank you for your service!

Great episode and so relatable and timely. Being a Respiratory Therapist and being on the frontline of this COVID...the anxiety is so real. I'm glad he recovered from the COVID. Great job to this couple.

Someone recommended this episode to us because we live right over the bridge in south Jersey and have a podcast for young adults.
This was a great episode! I love seeing couples be resourceful and living within their means. They still had goals and didn’t let debt hold them back from living their lives.
Thank you so much!
Would love to see some millennial money episodes of people making less than 40k ... all the ones I’ve seen are rather comfy salaries.
So true....
Agreed
This channel is "make it", not "broke".
John Lee that’s true ... although I guess my point is I would love to see less wealthy folks who are working hard, using their money smartly, and looking for career advancement opportunities. I think that would be very inspiring for people in lower income brackets who feel they have no way to save. You can still be financially responsible with a lower salary, although indeed it’s much harder to “make it”
Tune in to episode of "REAL LIFE millennial money"!!
Graham’s gonna be mad he won’t have much to complain about
Maybe for the wedding costs.

7:13 I found it profound how she says “Nothing from Andrews mom” lol my toxic self would’ve paused and looked at her confused

I was shocked when she said that. She could have just said that my parents are helping with the wedding. That’s all. Why call out Andrew’s mom?! Disappointed!
Especially since she doesn't live in the US! Plus I thought in the Indian culture the brides parents pay for the entire wedding along with a dowry

guys, let it sink in how under appreciated resident physicians are. We often work 80-100 hour weeks, get compensated less than minimal wage (~8 dollars an hour last i calculated) for 3-8 years on top of loans, all during the golden years age 25-35. This couple lives a frugal lifestyle, and a wedding of 50k is their entire saving. Let that sink in.
