    After 30 plus years in this business and retiring as a shop supervisor 7 years ago I'll give this simple suggestion to get better at what you do. Talk less, listen more, show up on time and do the job they are paying you to do to the best of your abilities. The rest will take care of itself in the long run.

    The sad part of the machining industry right now is that so many youngsters that wanted to get into the trade thought that everything was going to be automated by now and that all of the jobs would have been chewed up by robotics. I have taught well over 20 youngsters with my 35 years of Manual and CNC experience...some of which have surpassed me by far with knowledge and there is no greater feeling in the world to spark an interest into a young person and see them succeed far beyond what you originally thought and to have them come back and say thank you and THEN watch them start to teach other young people the trade. Thank you for what you all do at TITANS and best wishes for you and yours!!!

    My purpose? You mean the reason I always seek knowledge and to be better at my trade? Part of it is job security, I'll admit that. Nomatter where I move to, I'll find good work and that's nice. If that answer is unsatisfactory, the real reason I want to get better, to know as much as I can, the reason for that is so that one day, I will have total confidence, with my own equipment and tooling, to design and make anything. Machining is an important skillset to have, and not everything can be bought.

It’s a stress more mental than physical but given a good process and the tools/machines to complete the job you can go home knowing you did your best that day. It’s a marathon not a sprint.

    I don't even have a purpose. I am passionate about this trade and I love everything about it, for no reason. I want to be efficient, more precise inside and outside the machine, to program smarter and fewer tool moves, find the inner strength to increase harder cutting parameters, spend less time doing things that don't make money for the shop, make perfect parts, different parts everyday. I don't work this job to have nice time, I want to be given the hardest parts, come home with headaches and lose sleep over it, find the hidden solution at 3am then make the part perfect at the end of the next day. I don't know why. Life is not made to be easy and this job gets it.

    • @jeanduplessis4960

    • @jojo030786
      @jojo030786 2 роки тому

      1.250 is your base value. With a tolerance of +/- .020, that means it can be .020 higher or .020 lower, with a maximum of 1.270 and a minimum of 1.230. On some inspection reports, they request the deviation from the designated size. So 1.270 would be +.020, and 1.230 would be -.020

Every part was checked for accuracy and tolerance...The whole plane was 90% out of Specification. Thing was The critical Surfaces that HAD to be There were there. I thought that that was very telling on where the industry at the time stood. During the production of these planes there were no CNC Capabilities, There were no Bubble Gum Chewing Button Pushers that are now Proudly mispronouncing their 'Machinist" status. Goes to show that there is some latitude in a vast majority of parts, and Most are not Critical, These were done on Fixtures mostly By Skilled machinists and they were done on Manual Equipment.

      @DT-wp2yc 2 роки тому

      If everyone climbs that ladder like you did genius! who will do the work? Most likely you are family, or long time friends with the company owner. Not everyone is going to be an engineer! So let's talk about the average person working in the shops! And for your information I do know what I'm doing when it comes to machining parts, and I'm not talking production that someone else did the programming for, or someone set the machine up! 50000 is average working overtime in this trade after you learn how to do your own setups and programming! And if these shops can get enough people that can work with a programmer, and set up person, they will make a big wage of 15 an hour with a lot of stress! Be perfect, go faster and work a ton of hours! You are better off getting on welfare! Corrupt Democrats are making it great to do nothing! And with the cost of living going up from China Joe Biden the 50000 will really be 25000 a year after taxes, and paying for over priced benefits!!!! This trade has always had a hard time finding workers because the pay isn't worth the stress! And for what you need to know every good tool maker, or machinist is almost an engineer with the pay of a garbage man! And I'm not picking on that job! It's just the truth!

    • @brandons9138
      @brandons9138 2 роки тому +2

      @@DT-wp2yc I have no previous connection with the owner as a family or friend. I've only been at my current shop for a bit over 2 years now. After my first review I got a $10,000 raise. I'm not an engineer, I have a fucking art degree of all things.
      I still do the work. I program, set up and run jobs on a daily basis. I can do all of those thing on machines ranging from 3 to 5 axis mills, 2 to 9 axis lathes and Swiss machines. I'm versed in metrology and have worked as an inspector as well. I don't have much CMM training, so that is a weak point in my skill set. At my shop I'm expected to be able to be handed a print and take it all of the way through production validation. Some times I do hand the job off to an operator after I've proven out the program and process. That only happens because I've got the process to the point where it's production ready. Some jobs take longer than others to get to that point. Even after it gets to that point I own that job on the floor. If things are not right I'm the one they come to to fix it. At one point of the 14 Swiss machines that we have. I had written and validated the programs running on 7 of the machines. The others are dedicated production machines that have been running the same jobs for years now.
      I'm also expected to handle short run prototype jobs that come my way. I'm currently in the middle of a batch of short run parts for a medical device company. These jobs are my responsibility alone. I plan and program the parts, set the machine up, and run them out.
      I'm also there to train the lower skill guys to raise their skill set. I take every opportunity to show guys things that will build them up. I've spent the last couple of months training a guy who was hungry to learn how to do set ups on Swiss machines. It's gotten to the point that I can give him a series of tasks and let him go to it. He still wants me to double check his set up before we run the program for the first time. As he gains more confidence that is happening less and less.
      In the end you have to fight for yourself. Don't expect management to suddenly wake up and just give you more more money. That day will never happen. At one of my shops the owner kept asking for ideas to improve the shop. After asking at every meeting I decided to take action on it. I gave him a 3 page out line of things that saw that needed improvement. He was ecstatic. I gave it to him first before the GM because I knew that if I gave it to the GM it would either die with him or he would take credit for the ideas. After sitting down with the owner and GM we picked 7 of the items off the list to tackle. This was just before Thanksgiving of that year. I was straight with both of them as to why I made the list. I told them that if we were more productive/efficient they'd be able to pay me more. At the time I was making $25 an hour. I wanted closer to $28. By March the following year not a damn thing on that list had been accomplished or even started. The GM pulled me aside and said he couldn't pay me that much because the shop floor foreman wasn't even making that much. I was stunned as he'd been with the shop almost 30 years. At that point I knew that I was never going to be able to grow with that company. I found a new job and handed in my notice on April fools day. The GM asked me if it was about the list and if I was getting paid more at the new shop. I told him yes it was about the list, but no they weren't going to pay me more. I think that really stung for him to hear that. I worked at that next shop for 4 years, by the time I left I had been promoted to lathe department lead and was making $37 an hour.
