  • In the last video I did a full review on the stills capabilities of the Panasonic GX85. This video is dedicated to exploring the 4K footage and see how it compares to other similar cameras.
I've compared it to the Sony a6300 as well as the Sony RX100 Mk IV. How does it look? You be the judge.

I seriously hated the way the Sony rendered the skin tones. It made you look almost dead and blue while the Panasonic had a much more natural color.

Thanks for the review. I own the A6300 and the GX85. On a recent vacation I choose to take the GX85 over the Sony, due to over heating. I shot 4k video all day with the GX85 and did not have any over heating issues. I wish I could say the same for the A6300. The GX85 also has a great lens selection and 5 axis in body stabilization that works well. As you said the camera is sorely missing a mic input jack and the built in microphones need some improvement. But even with the mic issue, the GX85 really meets my needs. It is my first MFT camera and I really enjoy using it. I would not compare it against cameras that are not in the same class or a higher price points.

If I might be a little bold and suggest you can disable the constant AF. Also I wonder whether switching simply to 1080 resolution might actually produce a better image for the interior talk-to-camera? For a start I think the closer cropped 4k focus would go away and the effective focus length would go back to wider angle but perhaps I'm wrong.

Love the tests that you have done and shown, they justify your comments.
Nice of you to pick up that the kit lens is not wide enough for shooting handheld as for a Vlog. I think you do need to buy a wider lens for that kind of work.
We clearly saw some of that focus seeking you mentioned when you shoot indoor in low light.
    Great review Ted!

You hit this review spot on! All the info I needed was given by you. My needs are as follows:
I am a film maker/secondary photographer. My primary setup is a Sony AX100 that I send out clean 4K HDMI to Atomos Shogun 4K HDR.
I was looking at this for secondary/pickup shots. You are right. Too many trade offs.
I honestly think the Panasonic FZ300 actually checks all my needs far better than this camera and for less. Except one. I want the option to clean 4K HDMI out. That is the one trade off. Where this camera actually has more than one! You absolutely are right. There always seems to be a trade off of some kind in this camera class. If the FZ300 had had clean 4K out, it would have been a small filmmaker killer! Of course low light is always a problem on these cheaper cameras. But you can work around that to some degree. By lighting your spaces, fudging your camera settings some. But man, why can’t these camera makers get us the perfect solutions in one unit! BTW, I just subbed!
When are they gonna give us a clean 4K out without heat issues? For sub $1K?

Hey Ted, I really like your vids. I own gx80 (UK) This cam is excellent and at under£500 it really shakes things up. Don't rate dynamic range at all but it is workable, mics are dreadful but are superb in noisy situations. I film lots of club nights and it never distorts! I have Zoom for interviews. We grew up with massive investments in video and this is £500... The stabilisation is amazing, as is no anti alias filter, it's compact form factor makes it ideal run and gun. I don't like a few things on it, but really... £500 is no money film makers rejoice! When was last time you watched a movie and knew what cam they used? There maybe better options but you'll need to double your money, this really is okay and if you got your mitts on it 3 Years ago you would be a Don! A wealthy Don... 4K, MFT, 5 Axis and tiny! Awesome cam full stop! Do you need more? Yes, the GH5 is amazing but who on youtube will notice? Make your money first, this will do till then:)

@@Pietttro78 This was a long time ago. I actually boght the Fuji xt-2.....dont buy the G85.....buy the sony. it is still superior to many cameras and your work will be awesome. However, i also had the fuji xt-20 and it's far better for video as it has touchscreen also.
So, Fuji xt-20 or A6000. A6000 is better auto tracking....if you don't need it, Fuji is cheaper and will give you amazing results for less money.

The comparison to the a6300 and the primary usage for the GX85 for vlogging, where external mic, articulating screen, skin tone rendering, and unwavering focus, brings out the negative points about the GX85, those points are appreciated. For myself, where landscape and street photography are the primary use, the attributes of handling and small form factor yield results that are more than satisfactory. Focusing issues are negated in some circumstances by the use of the AF Hold button, while low light stills, although requiring a tripod for best results using long exposure, is an acceptable inconvenience. Lastly, the current price, and the price I paid for the body, kit lens, and accessories, is $599 - down $200. I think the argument for the GX85 still holds, and maybe even more so, now.

Great video! From what I remember, there was a fair bit of backlash when GX8 came out and it was quite a bit bigger than the GX7. The GX7 was a wonderfully balanced package - such a joy to use. I myself had been waiting for the GX8 for 4K video specifically, and I too decided against buying it because of the size. I bought the GX7 for its combination of size and features, and I expected the replacement to be a similar size and layout. The other problem with the GX8 was the shutter shock issue, which at the time was unresolved (I don't know if it is now?).
From what I remember, the GX85 was Panasonic's (hasty) response to that backlash, and the lower specs is obviously to differentiate it from the GX8. I use the GX8 now mostly for travel photography, along with the Sony RX100-V, but I actually carry the GX7 for photography, since it has more hard controls and is easier to work with.

Im been testing a lot, lately with a super takumar 50mm 1.4 and i can tell you that using only in body IS it works like a charm!
The only thing for now that is really dissapointing is the AF with the kit lens with the constant focus hunting even with good light and the low dinamic range.
I used to have a specific configuration with the "style" on the A5000 changing contrast, sharpness, etc, to get the most flat profile possible. Any idea with this camera?

Great review. my goodness this was detailed.
I watched your friend Chris' video and I have to say it makes the auto focus on the gx85 look terrible. (I started a discussion on this over at dpreview.) it seems the consensus is that continuous autofocus is weak and doesn't lock onto the right thing , i.e. the background will be in focus when you're trying to do a handheld selfie shot. touch to focus and half-press shutter button may be better though, especially if employed before you start recording. any further thoughts on this? did it seem like her video missed focus alot to you?

Hi Ted! Thanks for making all these great camera review videos. Thought it was hilarious in the stills video for this camera when you mentioned you were in fort worth - I am too! Crazy. Anyways, I am wondering if you have an opinion on the Canon Rebel T6i against this camera for videography. I am looking to shoot music-video / cinematic style videos of myself playing the drums in several different environments and lighting conditions, including places like abandoned warehouses, out in forested parks, and even at home in my garage. I plan to have my cameraman utilize a flexible tripod to assist with stabilization but it is still important to myself and my cameraman to have a stable image. What do you think would be the best option? If not either of those, our budget is preferably $850 and lower for the camera and a lense. Please suggest what you think the absolute best option would be. That'd be awesome! (All opinions welcome) Thanks Ted and anyone else in advance!

You might want to try the GX8. It doesn't have a 30 min recording limit (it does break up the files into separate 4gb sections though), doesn't overheat in my experience, has a flat profile, great battery life, has mic input (though it's a 2.5mm port so it'll need an adapter), slightly cheaper than GH4 and an articulating screen. Also unlike the a6300 I have, it's not picky about the memory card. I'd be happy to let you borrow it for a few weeks for a review if you'd like.

Like you video very much and the photo video on the GX85. I am recently in the market of downsizing my goto camera. I was a DSLR user and got tired of carrying that brick with the huge lens. I am not a professional, just a regular user capturing memories while on vacations with some expectations. I love the size of the GX85 plus I have seen my brother in law's GX7. I think this will be a great choice with the 20mm f/1.7 and 12-35mm f/2.8 for traveling.
Here is my concern, I noticed your comment on the audio capturing in video mode. Is it possible to use a mini-usb mic to plug into the camera for better audio? If yes, I will have zero doubts. It will be nice if you can give the mini-usb mic a test. Thanks in advance.

Ted, did you have the 12-32 lens on still? i wonder what the impact of a Panasonic 12-35 2.8 or a 25mm prime would have been on the sharpness and focus in the office video (as it was tripod shot 5 axis stabilisation wouldnt have been an issue) - the RX100 IV being a fixed lens has to put its 'best' glass on - it's all or nothing after all. Generally kit lenses as we all know (and the 12-32 isn't the worst kit lens) are not the sharpest tools in the box.
I also noticed that the focus grabbed onto your hand as you moved it forward not something I've normally noticed on face detection on Panasonic.

It's frustrating how camera companies are only putting all their best tech in the bigger bodies.. it's understandable from a business standpoint, but still frustrating for us consumers. I really really want a smaller size camera to combine all the things I want: high quality EVF, IBIS, good quality 4K, reliable continuous auto-focus, LOG profiles, mic/headphone jack, touchscreen, no overheating, minimal rolling shutter... The GH5 is probably going to combine most of these things but I wish they would put all this tech in a smaller rangefinder style body like the GX8. So please Sony and Panasonic, give us these things in the A6300 and GX8 successor!

The Dead Immortal I'm willing to pay a premium price for a camera as I described. I'm not asking them to give me all those features for the price of a GX85. I'll gladly pay around 2000 for a small camera that can give me all I want. There's still room above that price for them to sell camera's with full frame or medium format sensors.

Here's your answer: "but I wish they would put all this tech in a smaller rangefinder style body like the GX8". They can't fit everything into a smaller body. Things like microphone and headphone jacks, and their associated wiring - take up room. Most of what you've asked for is on the GX8 - save LOG profiles and a headphone jack. Autofocus is nice, but I assume that since you're on a photography site, you can focus manually - even remotely using the Panasonic smartphone app touch-to-focus.

simianinc I'm pretty sure Panasonic is able to fit in a headphone jack on a GX8 style body. Add to that LOG profiles, IBIS & shutter from the GX85, better continuous auto-focus with phase detection on the sensor (like A6300) and. I'll be a happy camper. I don't want to fiddle around with manual focus or an app on my phone. I want to shoot videos where I can just trust the continuous auto-focus to work properly and select my focus points with the touchscreen.

Log profiles are not worth the effort IMO. I have seen so many comparisons between color corrected log video from Sony and GH4's and guess what, after color correction they look identical to the GX85 (the Sony's actually looks worse). I've done some grading with the Panasonic files and they actually hold up quite well. Now if you're actually shooting something serious enough to do real hard grading where you are really pushing the files then either you have the wrong camera for the job or get a 4K external recorder.

***** I disagree, Sony's SLOG2 and Cine gamma's are very useful, just like V-Log on the GH4. With the GX85 the dynamic range in standard picture profiles is very limited, a log profile would help protect highlights from getting so easily blown out.

Indeed, most cameras are a trade off and a compromise, and in the case of vlogging, which is your preferred reason you were "excited" over this camera, the let down in focusing, skin tone rendering, and lack of microphone jack would put this choice at a disadvantage. But following your referral to Chris's channel, and seeing the GX85 in the outdoors on a gimbal, perhaps shows where the camera can shine. With the dual stabilization and small form factor, this camera can also see be seen as a weapon of choice for the street photographer.

Low light surprises me, I use two LX-100 for all my videos, at iso 1600, and they look very clean to me. Hunting is a problem, not to me, I disable cont. AF.
And no Mic input (grrrrrrrrrrrrr). And you are RIGHT: they ALL could make the perfect camera, they only have to fire their financial managers :-)

There are some good selfie mirrors with shoe mounts for microphones and lights for vloggers. They let you see the screen, albeit in reverse.

Nice review. Keep in mind that you’re using the kit lense. This lense is fine but it's definitely not designed for low light situation. If you want good low light, get the 25m olympus or sumilux lense. You will be blown away! :)

HUGE shot in the dark on getting a response, I was curious between this and Sony ZV1, which camera do you prefer for taking videos, almost like vlogging, but honestly more in line with just good vacation videos to treasure for later and which may be better for concert videography? If you've given either a shot for that. Also, thanks SO MUCH for that audio setup video with the Rode/Zoom set up.

I would look at the Sony ZV-E10 it’s like the ZV1 but has interchangeable lenses also the ZV-E10 competes with the Sony a6400 so I would do some more research on the ZV-E10 it might be worth the extra money

can anyone please explain. There's AFS and AFC for video. But there's also "Continuous AF" on/off in the menu. So even if you select AFS the camera will still do AFC if "Continuous AF" set to "On". Basically AFS/AFC selection is useless

Useful, informative video. Like some others, I did prefer the look and colour from the GX85 over the Sony(which looked blueish and 'over sharpened'). Omitting the mic input is an unfortunate design omission, as including one would not have taken away from sales of other, higher priced Lumix cameras - they're bigger and heavier.
Overall, I think the GX80/85 is a fine 'compact' camera, very Leica M influenced, and maybe that is a clue to which company (who partner Panasonic) may have been considering selling in a rebadged model?

You're going to want to get yourself a sound recorder and sync the sound up in post. It's a little bit of extra work, but it's always better to record your sound separately than to have it come from the camera.

I totally agree with Nick. I just bought Zoom H1N audio recorder and it records an excellent sound. On the other note, built-in mic is just fine for casual filming such as family videos.

Sony has several products that overheat. The issues are well known, and they have done nothing about it. That makes them radioactive for me. You mentioned that you set white balance to a specific temperature. I have had better results with my Panasonic G6 by balancing manually to a grey card. That might get rid of the green cast in your studio footage.

Now, it's 2020. The world is in chaos. Any new thoughts on a sub $500 camera for Video and stills? Thanks
