    You were a deciding factor for me buying the GX85 in July 2019. I have a Panasonic G9 and G85 but wanted something small to take everywhere as you said to "document my life". It came with the kit lens 12-32 but also the 45-150. Not great lenses but they do the job. For under $500 on Amazon, what a bargain. Sure, there are cameras out now with better specs but this camera does the job very well. I am a happy 2019 GX85 owner and thanks for your video!

    Just watched this video…..but in October 2024, six years later. I did laugh when I heard you talking about owning so few M43 cameras. I’m now so used to you talking of all the huge number of cameras you’ve owned, reviewed and indeed modified.
    Still enjoying your videos today. Keep them coming Emily.

    Great review I got a bit lucky when I bought this because I was a bit inexperienced when it came to Micro Four Thirds and cameras and quality in general when I bought it. I was mainly looking at specs and size when comparing to all different sorts of cameras two years ago and wanted to get away from the Canon Rebel I had which I bought because a salesman told me at the time this is exactly what I need to take great pictures only to find out I left it home most of the time because if its size and people tend to shy away from a camera that makes you look like a "real photographer" and being a novice I was self conscious about that. I find now with the GX85 like you said you can really be a ninja getting shots and people don't really take you serious with it. You tend to look like an amateur that is doing it for a hobby and not going to sell prints. I did a photo walk with a local pro who does great work and is brilliant at the practical side of photography but isn't as knowledgeable on the technical side of cameras and I found even he was looking at my setup as cute but you probably won't get as good as a picture as my full frame setup which we all know to be bull@$%! I've taken some great shots with the 12-32mm kit lens and I have a nice small bag that I fit the camera and 3-5 lens in it and accessories and I take it everywhere which is what I wanted.

    One of the best things about Panasonic's m43 camera range is that roughly similar image quality can be had from the smallest to the largest models. The GM1/5 took pictures pretty much as good as the GH3/4, meaning you weren't taking a hit in IQ when using the smallest camera.
    The GX85 is the sweet spot between size and features in Panasonic's line-up. It has almost all the features of the larger cameras and about the same IQ of the GH4, is not fiddly like the GM1, but big enough to feel solid and confident when shooting.

    This review was so helpful! This is my first non-point-and-shoot camera and I'm so excited. Mainly going to be doing content creation on Twitch with a capture card and dummy battery, with casual photography on the side. Was tossing back and forth between APS-C and Micro 4/3 but I'm so used to 4:3 photos from smartphones that I'm unphased (plus I can always move back to frame if needed). Glad I stumbled across your channel, too. Excellent content!

      @@MicroFourNerds not even close. Also, there are extremely competent capture cards available on eBay for around $20 USD that give the Elgato Cam Link a run for its money with latency and quality without being price gouged. If you're mainly using the camera as 1080p30, it's perfect, though you may want to wait for a Cam Link to return to stock and MSRP for 1080p60/4K30

    Got this camera and have now bought the Tascam DR-10SG Audio Recorder with integrated Shotgun Microphone which can go on the shoe mount. This is obviously not top of the range, but my son is going to be using it for video and it gets around not having a mic-input. The all-in-one microphone + recorder is also really light which should help and it arrives tomorrow so we will see how good it really is.

    Every single time I'm searching for answers to my questions, I end at your channel. It doesn't matter is about gimbals, cameras, lenses... I purchased the 7Artisans 8mm because of your advice; FilmicPro for the same reason, I didn't follow you and bought a DJI gimbal and I wonder why I didn't go for the Zhiyun... When I realised that I wanted something lighter and enjoyable for my trips on holydays, I sold my Canon APS-C equipment and go for MFT when I saw the results you were getting from yours... And now I'll probably buy a GX80 because I want a small Sony for video but there is a little tiny voice inside my head, since I sold my old Panasonic G2, whispering that this is the right one... Congratulations and thanks for your videos, they are very instructional and informative.

    I also am looking for a 'pocket camera'. Thanks to you this appeared on my radar. It's a bit dated now but the plus side is they are dropping in price. Regarding lack of weather sealing: I use a PD capture clip and love 'bad weather moody' photography. I always carry a few elasticated shower caps to just slip over my box when the weather goes south on me. Thanks for another excellently produced video. Love you presentation style and northern accent (so no need for subtitles then 😂). One negative, lose the annoying background music. You are unlikely to lose any subscribers for lack of background noise and might actually gain some.

    The GX85 is great. It lives in my daily carry backpack, usually with a 14-140, or 15mm prime, and I love having such a high quality but tiny camera with me almost always. I got the handgrip that was release alongside the GX9 for it, and that greatly improves the handling for me, without adding too much size and weight.

    This is one of the cameras I was interested in but I see quite a few videos critiquing the autofocus. Just a bit puzzled when I see a fair amount of people here praising it. Is this focusing issue just for video use? Actually wondering if the issue is if you use Olympus lenses on the camera that it affects autofocus, I have the 25mm 1.8, 45mm 1.8 and a marmite lens, the kit lens with wire focus. Maybe it’s best to stick to Olympus?

    The GX80 is just plain INSANE..... end of😏. I bought mine as a backup to my G80, but end up using it much more than I expected to. The results are identical to its bigger brother, and I TOTALLY agree about the kit lens, which is also ridiculously good, even wide open. Although I have a whole load if primes, I also have the kit version of the 35-100, which again is a fantastic piece of kit even wide open. Again it has dual stabilization with all the latest Panasonic bodies, and I've managed to handhold a shutter speed of 1/5 second at 100mm. It's great to hear someone else raving about the camera, though I'd also be interested to hear what you would make of the G80 if you were to get your hands on one. The shutter is even quieter than on the GX80, which itself isn't exactly noisy, and the IBIS seems to be even more effective. Great video as always.

Bought one for a cruise around the British Isles so had plenty of deck shots, interior shots, sunsets and varied locations from Skara Brae in the Orkneys to the Channel Islands. Superbly versatile and paired with a Crane M gets smooth video on the open sea. Great fun to use and I see why you are so enthusiastic. Looking forward to taking it to a wine festival soon and then those photogenic cites like Ghent/Antwerp and Amsterdam. Tempted now to buy the GX85 as a companion to the lovely GX8 which is a pleasure to use itself. Also I believe there is no ant-aliasing filter on the GX85 which itself is remarkable on such a great value for money camera. In some ways, a tilt only screen is perhaps better and safer than flip out screens-could be a potential to break it off if knocked! A great review with emphasis on enjoying photography and having fun too. Many reviews get so boring analysing the technicalities of each lens/camera and wrongly persuade people to spend more money than they need!! Not necessary for every photo to look perfect! Many people dismiss cheaper lenses but again, they get the job done, and every mft lens I've had has been great-even a cheap 55-200mm!!. Who wants to pixel peep every single photo taken lol!! Having typed all this, I am now just going to buy it!. Keep up the good work-respect and thanks :)

    Nice review. Always looking forward to your videos. I purchased a GX85(80) a year or so ago primarily as a street camera. It quickly became my backpacking favorite as well. For street, the rear screen is perfect. Quick, stealthy, and seemingly more robust that a full articulator. Also, the excellent Panasonic app is really great for setting your camera on the table while having a drink at a cafe and shooting away in silent mode while people think you're doing phone stuff.

    If you don't mind me asking what lens did you primarily use for your photos? I just got this along with the Panasonic 25mm 1.7 because I am all about that shallow depth of focus when I want it. I also saw in some reviews that the kit lens (16mm - 32mm) doesn't have a focus ring and I am not one keen to using auto focus. I saw that for that lens in particular you have to do manual focus with the lcd screen by touching and dragging. I loved your review as well and I am super excited to start taking photos with this camera.

    I do love my GX85 smile. I've got a Zoom H6 that I'm going to use for sound to Fix the lack of a Mic input. Then I bought this lens Venus Laowa 7.5mm f/2 Lens Lightweight for Micro Four Thirds Mount....And the Crane M smile. Hum all to shoot video to check my form while I do Yoga. Great review and really useful information! I would like your insight about the gimbal side of things. Since you have both gimbals, would it be a good idea to skip the Zhiyun Crane M, save money and go for the Zhiyun Crane 2 (having in mind a heavier rig in future), or it is a bad match for this camera cause of the low weight?

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  6 років тому

      Ember Fade Official I'd consider the Crane Plus too, which I also have (gimbal hoarder here!) I personally find the Crane 2 bloody HUGE and perhaps overkill for most m43 setups. The crane Plus is a nice sweet spot. If you're getting very very large lenses get the Crane 2 😊

    • @EmberFadeOfficial

      Hahah I completely understand the gear mania and since the work you do is awesome and you can afford it, I'd say you deserve all the gimbals, lenses, etc. Yes since I asked, I researched it a bit and indeed the Crane Plus seems like the best of both worlds! Thanks for the response and have fun with all your dope equipment I'm currently drooling for 😂

    I'm here because I just got one. It took me a year to get it where I live as there are no camera shops, well, there's the nikon centre and you can guess what they sell, but that is it. I bought it second hand and it cost the same as buying it new in the USA but it was in great condition, hardly used, nice camera bag.
    I tried to buy it a year ago, but it got complicated and so I waited. Anyway, it was the only camera in this price range that I was interested in because I wanted it mostly for panasonic's quality video features. I like small, I'm not very much into being seen to be taking photos and I usually always have a ton of stuff to carry as I am a teacher.
    I'm pretty happy with it. Oh and yeah, the wifi feature turns my cel phone into a monitor so the flip out screen is not always necessary.

    I'm considering buying a Pen-F or a Lumix GX9 as a travel camera. Which would you recommend? I have a Canos 5D mrk2 with 24-70 f / 2.8 which I'm really pleased with. It's just too big for travel. I take landscapes, street pictures / moods of culture and family pictures, primarily of my children;) I'm filming a little. Thanks!

      Nanna Bjerg hiya! I'd highly recommend having a go of the menu systems in a store before you buy. They will both be superb for photos (the Panasonic will be better if you want to shoot a bit of video too), but the deciding factor is really if you get along well with the menus. I found the pen f menus overly complex and ended up selling mine, but there are lots of people on here who like the Olympus menus. It really is a personal choice 😊 both will give you fantastic images!

    You've sold me. I purchased a Sony A 6300 last week for my gimbal. Need another camera for a wedding to go with the Sony and a G85 and I think this is the one (a safe wide) I'm really torn people telling me to go Sony but whenever i look at my panny footage it's always so good! Some Sony shooters should take their blinkers off for a day.... Anyway a Quick question. Does the camera have continuous video recording? OR if it doesn't in UK version did you get it when you changed it to NTSC? Thanks Emily.

    I bought it from Jessops in March for 599£ (three lenses). So far so good. Nothing to complain about except one thing: Dynamic Range. It is poor.
    I'm no pro videographer so I don't care about the mic input. I wish the screen was tilting-swivelling and it weighed less. It's a bit heavy tbh.
    it's a 9/10 camera. Seriously, it ticks all the boxes.
    I highly recommend it.

    Two gripes I have with my GX 80 firstly the kit lens is as you say very good considering it's size and build but it drives me mad that you have to twist it open for the camera to work, second gripe is the grip is just not deep enough to be confident I have now bought the accessory grip for it which has transformed the way it feels making it far more comfortable without adding too much bulk although it brings another annoyance in that it has to be removed to change card and battery but there you go the quirks of MFT
    So if I were going to advise someone looking at this camera I would strongly recommend they consider the G80 which itself can be found heavily discounted and is not that much bigger
    As always thank you so much for bringing us into your world of MFT it is very much appreciated

    • @fingerhorn4
      @fingerhorn4 4 роки тому

      Simply do not understand why you find the twist-to-open kit lens a pain. It takes less than two seconds but also makes the GX80 easily fit into your (jacket or small coat) pocket. What other camera has this with ALL the other features, quality, low price, 4k video, built in angle-adjustable flash, best-in-class stabilisation etc? Answer is none.

    "Every single day" is the key, isn't it? I found I had to psyche myself up to go out with the DSLR, and I'd always feel like making images with my mobile phone was a compromise. I really do take the GX85 (US model #) with me almost every day, and always on walks. I've had it for a month and still have only scratched the surface of it's menus. And yes, lack of mic jack is truly a loss. I'd have traded off the USB for the mic jack. Who uses the USB?

    I've had a GX80 for a little over a year now, as a second camera to my EM5 mkii. I love it. When I go out on the bike it's in the pannier with me and it probably gets more use than the EM5 because of that. An Oly 9-18mm and a Pana 14-140mm mean I've got just about everything covered when I'm out and about. As to the 'not bought a camera in five minutes' I've just bought a GX8 with the one hundred pounds back deal from Panasonic, couldn't resist it, so in theory the GX80 now becomes the third camera...

    • @stuartnelson3202
      @stuartnelson3202 6 років тому

      I did something similar with the GX7. Bought the EM5MII early 2015 and got the GX7 later that year. It feels like the best of both worlds having the feature set from both brands but being able to share lenses between them. Love both of them.
      When I get my next body ill definitely be looking out for cashback deals.
      Got £100 cashback on the GX7 and a free leather case from Panasonic but on top of that the Jessops version came with two lenses (20mm & 12-32mm) and an extra battery. So for £500 (I think it was) after cashback got an amazing deal...
      So deffo be watching out for anything like that next time I get another body!

    I sold GH4 and got GX85. Besides missing a few things such as the mic port, I think this is one of the best camera for travel. GX85 + 14mm f2.5 or 17mm f1.8 (I have both, can't choose which one!) would make a perfect set up for street photography.

    • @raaisma
      @raaisma 6 років тому

      Yes, it does. You can't beat laws of physics. Bigger sensor will always have more advantages than smaller sensor in smartphones. At base ISO though, both are about the same but smartphones tend to process more which sometimes make the pictures oversharpened or destroyed some details. Higher ISO, GX85 will always beat smartphones.

      I've got E-M10MkII and GX80. Like them both equally. Both have unique features, the GX more useable features and 4K photo etc, the M10 just looks nicer and there's just something about it that makes one proud to use it.
      The M10 is currently with my daughter who is doing a professional portrait shoot for her job [with the 45mm f1.8] and I'm getting it back next Tuesday. Only had it a month and the current UK offer price is £299 less £65 or so cashback for body only. It's a better camera than the MkIII and less 'starter'. The current run-out price makes it a more attractive purchase than the GX80, but nevertheless if forced to choose one or the other I would choose the GX80. That smooth silent shutter is fab. The 4K photo features great. The menu is simply simpler and more logical. Luckily I'm spoilt with having both plus a G7 which is a nicer thing to carry on a wrist strap all day especially with the 14/140 lens attached , though less discreet and lacks GX80 features, although it does have more great external controls. Th main thing it lacks is the new shutter and in-body stabilisation.
      One thing that I've got on the M-10 is the quick attach hand grip, which I like very much. Bought used for a considerable saving this week. The hand grip for the GX80/9 is currently unavailable and quoted at a ridiculous price for a simple non-quick-attach grip. It is something I would certainly buy if it was redesigned to provide quick access to the card and battery door like the Olympus model, and if the price was a more sensible £50 or less.

    • @chemimoco
      @chemimoco 6 років тому

      Definitely the E-M10 is prettier and the photos it produces seem to have more soul, the GX80 seems more technical and sterile. I'm also interested in the video capabilities, and the MkII is very lacking. I think Olympus made the wrong decision by purposely crippling the MkIII to market it for beginners, with all the pro features and 4K video it would be a killer (and beginners would always be able to shoot in Auto anyways). The GX80 just seems a better package overall.

    Great review, and I agree with your points. I bought the GX80 for exactly the reasons you state. Many reviewers start by describing this as a "B" camera, as though it is an inconsequential reserve camera. Nothing could be further from the truth. The "B" camera description comes from those who cannot bear to be seen without a massive tripod, huge camera and obligatory phallic lenses which they imagine flatter their ego. The GX80 is a great camera, even if it was near double the price. You can achieve almost everything the most expensive camera can, provided there is reasonable light and you don't need 20 feet wide prints! Long live smaller, less intrusive, portable cameras.

    I bought mine for pretty much the same reasons. I have a Canon 7D but it's no good for taking on holiday. Just too big and bulky. This was a handy little camera to pop in the bag or, even pocket, and still capture great images. Like you said, it packs in tons of features for such a small, cheap camera. I love it and it gets used a lot more than the Canon at the moment. Post Focus is just one of those cracking features, and very cool too.

    With darkness looming big over Olympus, I've decided it was time for me to broaden my horizons after more than 10 years of Oly MFT bodies (and 20 years shooting Olympus film cameras before). So I remembered your video and decided to follow your advice, but I bought the slightly updated GX9 instead. Time to jump into the 20 MPix bandwagon too, I guess. Initial contact is positive, I love that tiny monster of camera. My only gripe is the poor EVF, which is barely adequate to frame a picture. Otherwise, it's brilliant if slightly more expensive. I wouldn't have bought the GX9 had I had the GX80 already, but for a first camera I would absolutely recommend to get the latest model. Plus no more fiddling to get Cinelike D ;-)
