i always thought the guitar trio did their best work outside the guitar trio. but this original line up may have had some potential. coryell & mclaughlin had a lot in common as players: a spirit of boundless exploration, or something like that. their music was different, but somehow it is like they travelled a parallel path. they could have done good work together. but, unfortunately, coryell was in poor health at this time. i think this is their first meeting since the "spaces" concert c.1969 and maybe their last meeting too. two free spirits; two unique improvisers. when either is at their best, it can make me laugh inside.
