- In 1979 and 1980 three world renowned guitarists, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell and Paco De Lucia formed a guitar super-trio and toured Europe. McLaughlin/DeLucia/Coryell - Meeting of the Spirits video The spell-binding quality of the music that the collaboration created as an ensemble and the dazzling audience reaction to the performances has never been surpassed and has rightfully passed into Jazz folklore. Live at Royal Albert Hall, London, UK, February 14, 1979
McLaughlin is on fire in this...incredible
im a huge Paco guy but John here OMG ......IVE NEVER HEARD PLAYING LIKE THIS!!!
Larry was such a fascinating man & musician, he had that "everyman" personality that made us feel like we were up on stage as well, and yet he played beyond belief like one of God's warring angels preparing for battle! All three of these guys are heroes to me and always will be.
Not long before his death I could see Larry in my town Szeged. He was calm and terrific. I watched him from about 4 meters. A remembrance for a lifetime.
@@varkony60I was standing 8' away at a little club in Hermosa Beach. Absofuckinglutely amazing!🎉
Must have watched this at least 200 times over the years and i`m still blown away by it as much today, think it`s the most amazing guitar performance ever, what maclaughlin does in his extended solo is incredible!RIP Paco
me too man, i understand this feeling
Both Coryell and McLaughlin's solos pay homage to Paco and are fully themselves. This the power of the jazz sensibility at its best, true musical openness paired with originality and respect for tradition.
Truly a meeting of the spirits.
I saw them in Paris at the Pavilion just before this concert. A truly magical night of virtuoso musicianship I will never forget. Thank you for posting. I still feel experience the vibrations from their playing in every nook and cranny of my being.
The way Larry Coryell shakes his head at the end of McLaughlin's solo 18:12-18:20 tells you everything. Respect
and paco: wrf? but, ok, i agree, still playing
RIP LARRY CORYELL. Say hello to Paco for us.
I have accessed this every day, and have listened to this a thousand times. Thanks for posting this. I like this version so much better than even the Mahavishnu version. It is mind blowing to me (like way way beyond this plane of existence) what can be done with three brains, wooden boxes and some metal (or nylon) strings. just astounding.
The run by Johnny Mac starting at 12:30-12:50 is so incredible---too bad the camera man didn't capture the fret board as it may have been glowing! He missed another amazing one at around 14:30 as well. The facial and physical exchanges between these artists is such a joy to behold. Paco and Larry seem entranced and giddy while John is transcending space. I taped the audio of this show on an old cassette player when it was televised in early 1982. Twice during the performance our wall phone rang....it was funny as hell because it was in perfect pitch with the tuning of the guitars. I had the cassette until 2005 when it finally fell apart after hundreds of plays of this amazing show. To finally see video of what I had only been able to imagine for 20+ years was totally worth the wait !
JOHNNY E' IL N.1 12.30 12.50
As for me, I like the incredible fragment from 19:09 to the end, which starts the musical dialogue between musicians. A burning, impetuous conversation.
I totally copped the jumping in and out of pentatonics by the methods of diminished
John McLaughlins playing is other worldly!
Russell George Absolutely!
He was possessed here...Terrifying. Truly improvising. Glorious.
@@mirathebear who???
Strangely, can almost hear Goodman’s violin, as when he’d lay back between solos and during the unison parts.
Beautiful performance! 🌹
i'm very afraid and sad to say.. RIP Larry Coryell. you were among the greats
...and Paco...RIP Maestro.
Wow, Paco stole the show. You can't compare him with anyone.
Andre B His name is John McLaughlin.
@Vladimir Dj @Vladimir Dj......I agree my friend. Whether it was these 3 or John and Paco with Al .....Paco to me always was just a touch above. All great players.....but Paco was something special. True Flamenco style if you will 👍.
Idk if it's just me but al di meola gets on my nerves

best accoustic trio ever
the right hand technique of DeLucia is quite astounding
whoooo, that right hand technique! sounds incredible! Paco was THE man
RIP Larry Coryell
Genio maestro inigualable.

Moved by your words.
I cant stand when people talk about whose best etc. They all rule in their own unique way!
well said
+nsen74 Agreed! I would say I love what Paco plays but that doesn't mean the other two aren't maestros in what they are doing.
+nsen74 Paco's dead so that leaves only two to compare John and Al
Tom Cloke I beg to disagree, Paco and any other great musician or artist will always survive by their great legacy and artwork.. Their bodies might demise but their work will continue to be alive indefinitely.
Ikr? Everyone is too competitive. You cant even talk to people who love really unique things like you without them nitpicking into subgenre's, etc.. It gets tiring.
Rest In Peace Larry... Beautiful Music...
RIP Larry Coryell you were brilliant.
Three Gods playing guitars
i was there at Real Madrid Stadium in 1979. Never forgot that 8 hours of music of God and Evil
Esteban Lijalad 8 hours????
Time machine activated! First stop is this show!
3 grandes tres GRANDIOSOS MÚSICOS ✌🏽
Three great artist all very unique in their own style!
Mclaughlin's speed is super2 extraordinary & Paco's right fingers are unbelievable (often sounds like a machine gun when he strikes on lower notes).
Precisely. What makes flamenco so difficult isn’t just the left-hand speed. It’s coordinating the right hand to go with it. Jimmy Page, eat your heart out.
I just tried to play along with this on my cheapo classical guitar. I almost kept up here and there, but I mostly listened in awe!!!!! Maybe in another 10 years..................
For me it’s more like 10 lifetimes lol
@@GothJedi lol
Holy fucking shit!
Coryell was also a master teacher. His son has the gift as well.
"Nice to smile" - pure joy
Larry is amazing here
RIP PACO and CORYEL.....Masterpiece played by Masters...thank you for uploading
This is so out of control...too great!👽❤I can live in this world forever...
... just when you think you might be losing him, John pulls you right back in. I was fortunate enough to see him with Ravi Shankar in Santa Monica Civic Center, The Royal Albert Hall with Paco & Al, and at The Rainbow in London with Billy Cobham & Jack Bruce ! Each was different and each was mind blowing! 🎉 🍻
LOVE THESE GUYS ... Real experts reaching for new heights, pushing the envelope of music with brilliant technique and showmanship fervor.
1 one of the best recording ever... meeting .my favourite
The holy grail , John acoustic playing rendering the original from Inner Mounting Flame, loved the music, Billy Cobham, amazing one of the first true virtuosity of Fusion drummers, Mr. Goodman on violin. Paco ‘s classical/ Brazilian/ Spanish finger picking , the speed, at the start , Larry acoustic accents , in their youth, saved , archived. Larry’s playing, acoustic as in Spain , his agility and dexterity certainly influenced byJohn, loved his work with Philip Catherine, so happy this was captured on film. Peace and Ecology.❤
Sublime. RIP Pavo and Larry. Your music lives on.
This show in next years must be released like a special CD edition!
Pure History!!!
It is a pity that was only released until now in DVD format.
It is crazy you can't stop time from taking its toll on people. I remember this from 40 years ago on PBS. RIP Larry ! Go play with Paco and keep it going in a better place !
Maestro Larry ♡
It cannot be better than this
I saw this in Sweden on cable. the Channel was Super Channel.1993. (They renamed in 1996 to NBC Super Channel) They had a series called; Talking Jazz. Let me say, I was totaly blown down!
when i saw them. only name i knew was Paco. Totally bonkers to "shred" without a pick! 😅
I hope i can flnd this recording on Vinyl.
before my illness knocks me off the rocker. (Pancreatic cancer) Anyway, peace to you all 💖
God bless you and get the bless light.
They produced something mágical that night -a real meeting of the spirits(simply beautiful-look at the synergy between John and Paco ,mutual luv and respect
Shredding with soul
Best ad Ovation ever had
1b they positively influenced each other. artistically. uniquely in history
R.i.p Larry, u inspired me as well, say Hi to Paco, wherever u may be...and jammin´
Pacos'right hand technique is unbelievable 🤯
This entire performance of all three guitarists is beautifully orchestrated and executed.
At 18:14 John finishes his long solo.... At 19:08 he begins to detune to a drop of his lower E string, as this signifies the start of the face-off between John and Larry. As they play in beautiful precision, and in that exactitude of timing with a continuous repeating of flamenco trills in unison, while Paco takes over the backing rhythm.
This becomes a beautiful emerging finale to the end.
R.I.P Larry! ♥
The way John smiles in the beginning when Coryell quotes him with that reverse bend with vibrato that John likes so much lol
I apprec
iated LC's little humerous 'sour' note at the end of his first short solo.
The glorious back and forth towards the end, having some fun!
These r the real deals
I have seen this many times......many times..It is like a prayer to me.....I am a plectrurm am guitarist but adore this.......bravo.... to this day.....gives me such joy....
Monument musical...
RIP, Larry Coryell.
Fantastic
Eu tinha o DVD , acabei perdendo à muito tempo...
Custei para achar esse vídeo, na minha cabeça era o Di Meola que fechava o trio.
Estado da arte, sensacional mesmo
Awesome!
Amazing!
Incredible!
Wow, wish I had been there, UA-cam does it again. Thank you Peter for posting this. They are and were amazing players. It's so wonderful to have these recordings and be able to re-watch. Incredible! I love this.
I love this combination of styles and techniques, each one a king in their own right. However the baby I was about to give birth to definitely did not ! I was at their Albert Hall concert in 1979 - my husband having got me out of hospital for what he thought was a classical guitar concert. I had to leave before the end as the baby was definitely practising Flamenco in utero and was born the following day (3 weeks early). Cherished memories indeed.
I was at that concert, travelled down from Scotland with a friend and we got stranded at Tring due to snow - wonderful memories!
My brother took my dad to see Paco de Lucia Mclaughlin di meola in Toronto.. my dad said Johnny blew them away 🎉
Godlike... adrenalin flowing listening to this. Astounding music
Los vi en Barcelona, todavía se me ponen los pelos de punta. Volví a ve a Paco y John con Al Dimeola, hermoso también, pero con Coryell fué más improvisado y genial
Qué bien !!!! Fantástico !!! Me gusta !!!
R.I.P. Larry
I feel like they are stuck in that moment for all time
Bravísimo! Magico, eterno, sublime!
How in the hell does Paco De Lucia play that fast with his right hand! The main theme is so mystical, and yet they're all grinning because they're in a zone and know that few will be able to transcend to the level which they have musically and spiritually.
Saw them in El Lago - Madrid. Got so hyper - not high, mind - after, that we went to Parque de Atracciones and rode the roller coaster. Memories, memories.
Wonderful! True spirits! Great! A truly creative time, much grateful appreciation!
RIP Coryell🌹🌹🌹
very few guitar players can play this. they are simply the best ever huge salut bravo amyzing
totally fucking mindblowing
Légendaire!
This will make see the need to practice! 😜😘🥳🥳
John & Paco made the best acoustic guitar music ever recorded. Seriously. This was also John's golden age, I understand he had to move on with his personal musical journey in life and experiment other styles. I agree No need to play like this again for too special to go over it again in a contrived way, as other musicians have done lately, such as Van Halen and the Pixies..
He still came from the tradition that you need to find your own voice. And he experiments SO-OO much there's bound to be certain ideas that don't line up with each listener. This idea that you either have to LOVE everything, blind, or he totally sucks at everything - insane. JM is like Miles in that regard - some experiments didn't appeal to me as much as: The First Mahavishnu, Shakti, then these trios, "Theives and Poets" I though was his finest-realized suite. But then that first incarnation of Remember Shakti, with no singer just U. Srinivas, JM, Zakir and Selvaganesh. Go to sugarmegs.org and dig up the 1999 and 2000 tours of THIS "Remember Shakti." Concert #2254 at Berklee - my primary interest in music is the schemes, methods, "tricks" used to improvise melodies. His first solo, first song uses more methods than I've ever heard anywhere. And then - Srinivas DAMN NEAR near smokes him. He KNOWS he plays better in a bit of a war zone, the problem became - he couldn't find anyone to joust with - they all died.
And as much people rag on him for NOT sounding like everybody else - look up the reactions to when Miles Davis, and then John Coltrane - STOPPED using vibrato. Amazingly, we lived through it. But also, he's slowing down now too. That fire can't burn bright forever. Another insane thing - We Americans refuse to let our heros AGE. I wonder how many NOTES McLaughlin's played...
These guys play guitar like ringing a bell.
R.I.P Larry Coryell
I met Larry and John in 1978 when John was touring with his "One Truth Band" I actually got to know Larry on a personal basis. It was this concert that made me get serious about guitar
I still have the video cassette I recorded from the tv in 1980, I treasure this masterpiece particularly the intro where they are warming up in the dressing room before going on stage..I Love guardian angel..Pacos work on this is spellbinding as is all of it..RIP Paco
Paco De Lucia use of Dynamics...feel is out of this world
My 3 favourites!
Gracias por compartirlo! Este registro es un bello tesoro, estoy fascinada!
Paco's right hand is fabolous. But don't forget to watch his elastic left little finger. It goes easely to all upper strings.
... Paco est un Génie absolu , Jamais 2 comme lui !!!!! John Mach Laughlin est génial , Larry Corryel est aussi Génial . Les gougres qui les critiques , qu'ils aillent jouer en live avec eux ....
Thank you very much for sharing this great song en beautiful instrument we met the great spirit muchissimas gracias 🌼 🌺 🕊️
This is truly Meeting of the Spirits
Quite a treat for a huge guitar and jazz fan.
Coryell, McLaughlin y Paco increíbles !!! Qué monstruos estos tres genios !!!
When I was 10 years old I heard Flamenco for the first time, and daydreamed about running away to Spain, living in the Sierra Madrona, studying guitar, and subsisting on Pop Tarts and Spanish wine. But our grade school band director convinced me to stay in Plant City, Florida, and join the band on trombone, which led to a music career. Fast forward to the mid-80s, where the daydream was resurrected by hearing Passion, Grace, and Fire. I wonder if Mr. Crew knew his advice doomed me to a life of professional trombonist jokes….
R.I.P Larry Coryell you will be missed,I just wish he had got a solo spot on this tune, loved the interplay between him and John,I just wish John had made his solo shorter and featured Larry a bit, just my 2 cents....
Impresionante !!!!!!!
I have seen him play live about 10 times . Shaxti , Dennis chambers trio 2x ..
Once in Vancouver on magic mushrooms. Wow
How on Earth did you get this unprecedented video? Finally! Larry and John McLaughlin together playing. It would be excellent to have Jerry Goodman with them on this tune.
John McLaughlin at his best. I remember reading in an article that this incarnation of the group was suppose to put out an album of their European Tour. Columbia Records didn't allow it, then McLaughlin left to join Warner Bros. Then Di Meola came in and they allowed the release of FNSF. I bet Columbia records was like, oh so this is what John was talking about. John, best overall guitarist in my book! Holdsworth is the greatest electric guitarist, Shawn Lane was the fastest and had the most talent of any guitarist. It's those three folks.
In your opinion. . . .
