Not to overstate the obvious, but for John to keep up with Paco in both phrasing and solos on a traditional flamenco tune (Chiquito) whilst playing with a pick is an incredible display of his of true genius. Both such gifted musicians!
@God Speed not always true, like Daniel said, the flamenco technique is really téchnical, and that john was able to keep up with paco using a pick is really amazing, the flamenco is meaned to play with finger, with a pick is much more Harder that the finger tecnique.

Paco - represents so much. Revolutionised flamenco guitar. Helped push flamenco music in general to the forefront. Showed how important an audience is, playing better with audiences who really felt his music. All at a time of the Spanish transition to democracy. An essential part of its backdrop. The feelings are of love, respect and gratitude. RIP Paco.

No need for words. They always were like brothers and it shows. They loved each other a lot, in fact, when Paco passed a few years ago it was a terrible blow for John.

Wow this is a treasure to see! '82 was around the time I first got exposed to McLaughlin and then Paco not long after. There's very few guitar players who move my soul as much as them. Though it really depends on the style of music..but to this day McLaughlin is still my favorite with Paco being up there as well in my personal top ten fave players. So wish Paco was still with us!! And I wish McLaughlin didn't retire lol but he's certainly earned it after a lifetime of playing the greatest guitar music the world has ever known! 🎸🎵🎶🙏

It’s incredible how John McLaughlin can immerse himself in a particular style (whether it be flamenco or Indian music) and sound totally at home with authentic masters in the styles.

1982. Paco de Lucia with a t-shirt with three flags: USA, Uk and Spain...but the spanish one still with the st.John's eagle of Franco xD. Vamo' allá Juanito. Funny way to start xD. John McLaughlin has a super technique but Paco used his flamenco technique only with his fingers. Incredible.

It's kinda crazy seeing someone using a pick that can hang with Paco..
+skategangster yup, not surprized after seeing Al de Meola doing "Mediterranean Sundance" with Paco XD
+skategangster It's supposed to be the opposite as it's easier to go faster with a pick than with picado with I and m fingers but with Paco the formula was reversed and it became a challenge for pick player to catch up with his fingerstyle picado.
ror sara I didn't really mean picado vs. a pick, I just meant someone using a pick that wasn't intimidated by jamming with Paco. Regardless of which is faster, I think most flat pickers would be pretty lost jamming with great flamenco player - but of course there are exceptions like George Strunz, Al de Meola.

Pues yo veo a dos monstruos aunque por obvias razones Paco está cómodo en su estilo y su guitarra acústica usando sus dedos.
John está con plumilla y dudo que Paco pudiera hacerle segunda en una guitarra electrica dónde el otro se movería como pez en el agua.
Asi que en guitarra flamenca Paco es Dios pero en la fusión de jazz y otros estilos en una eléctrica sería más bien un sacerdote del Dios mclaughlin
