After 20 years of shooting pistol and rifle, this video just changed the game for me as a new bow shooter. The best example I can give is that at 70 yards, trying to focus on the front sight I only hit the target 2/6 times. Following this instruction, I was 6/6 with three in the kill zone. Fantastic instruction.
When shooting pistols and rifles, you're supposed to focus on the target and let the front sight blur out. Thats why you started shooting better. You finally, after 20 years, learned how to aim your gun.
@@sjeverett75 according to every military and law enforcement firearms instructor (of which I am one) in the USA, you focus on your front sight. That’s why we teach “front sight, front sight, slack, pause, squeeze” to new recruits. I don’t know where you learned to shoot, but you have a lot to learn.
Chad, I was thinking the same thing. This is just the opposite of how i was trained in pistol shooting. Why is archery opposite for handgun? Which one is right? Do I need to change my pistol focus or my archery focus? Well, time to go to the ranges and experiment.
Josh, I've been shooting/hunting with a bow since 1963, before the compound was invented. Done it all and I wish every archer in the world could see your learning videos BECAUSE you and your techniques are 100% the best. 👍👍🔥
Just did my first shoot today and found I was doing better when I focused on the target instead of the pin. Very happy to hear that experienced archers use this method as well. Great video!
@@Aryan-py8lk wondering if they focus on the pin first just to make sure it is on the bullseye, then don’t move at all and focus on the target?? Dude! You literally changed my life today. Yesterday I was just spraying the bag. This morning I went out immediately after watching your video, changed my point of focus and started stacking arrows in one on top of the other! Thank you so much for posting this!!!

This is the only video that actually got me hitting 1-2 inch groups with my bow I used to hit ALL over the target I watched this video and then I went out the next morning and was hitting dimes now I consistently hit dimes thank you man
I always found this interesting. For pistols I've become accustomed to focusing on the front sight and letting the target blur so I've shot bows this way also...I'll give focusing on the target a try.
I was just thinking about the same thing. I've grown accustomed to being constantly told to "focus on the front sight" that it never occurred to me that there would ever be a different way of shooting.
That’s because, with a pistol, you are controlling the angle of the barrel apart from your line of sight. With a bow, your anchor point(face/corner of mouth/tip of nose) IS the “back sight”.
Finally a video that shows me what to do with this thing that came attached to my bow!! I like how you show with your camera looking through it as you would when you use it, explain how to do something and why. I am subbed liked, alarmed and commented as you can see. Great advice and makes since. I tell children to focus on whatever it is they're aiming for. The bowling pin you want to hit, where you want the golf ball to land, the basketball basket, the place you want your baseball to go etc. And this doesn't just apply to sports. Whatever you focus on that is ahead of you is how you can accurately achieve getting to that point or goal. Again, great advice and helped me tremendously with aiming and shooting my bow.
I just got a bow tune from my shop and I asked him to take a quick look at me shot process. He was cool enough to help and saw one thing that I needed to know badly. So the only thing he said was just hold my shot position until the arrow hits the target. That tightened my groups and increased my dot accuracy. So simple
This works for me as well. I thought that it was just because I grew up shooting instinctively. I never told anyone about it, because I thought I would be ridiculed. I assumed most compound shooter aimed just line they do with a rifle.
This is solid advice and something I’ve said in the past. But you said it best. Your eye battles for focus between the pin and your target. GIVE THE WIN OF THAT BATTLE TO THE TARGET AND LET YOUR PIN HOVER/cover slowly squeeze. Great stuff brother keep up the great tips!!

Focusing on the target. Aiming elevation from the hip. And consistent firm anchor has helped me the most. I ain't a dead eye but 99% of the time at 20 to 40 I can hit that 6" circle
Thank you for the confirmation. New shooter, just started this week. You are 100% correct. When I focus on the black circle on target it bullseye. (I color the center black) I Didn't know why i made a great shot. Thinking back there was allot less movement. In fact i was really relax.
Dude, this just helped me in the most unexpected way. Okay, so of course I'm looking for archery tips for myself. Normal. Thank you. I'm absolutely going to try this tomorrow when I practice. BUT, I'm also writing a fantasy novel and, I must admit, working out the logistics for all of the species gets a little technical. Now I've decided that my dark elves are awesome archers, but they also have cat's eyes. This decision was pure inspiration and I'm honestly looking for a way to justify it. Why is this relevant to the cost of tea in China? Because the shape of a cat's pupils allow them to look at a narrow area and keep *everything* in that area in focus. That means that the mouse, the blades of grass between them and the mouse, are all in perfect focus the whole time they're looking. It helps them get perfect aim. (Then they decide to pounce, their pupils go all cray cray in a last ditch effort to gather just a bit more information, and they lose their minds and do their lee roy jenkens bolt for the prize.) Now I knew this little factoid about cats because I love my kitty so, duh. I also love archery and I'm interested. But this video just tied it all in on why my little dark elves are such rockin' archers. They don't have the focus problem that people do! When they narrow in on their target, everything between them and the target is clear as a bell. They don't have to choose. So the information you just provided is going in my book. Damn did my groups improve today! Awesome video and great tip! It just felt so natural to focus on the pin when youre in the moment. But this helped alot.... again! Damn i feel like im getting old, I completely forgot to focus on the target.
After 34 years of bowhunting, I stopped using a pin last year. I "frame it & claim it" using an EZ-V sight now. I don't even have to remind myself to focus on the target instead of the pin, because there are no pins! It took some practice, but I will never go back to using a pin or crosshair for bowhunting. I don't even use a rangefinder for practice any more. Haven't even touched my rangefinder since last spring turkey season. A doe took me by surprise yesterday morning. I still don't know how she got within bow range without me noticing her, but the ground was damp (quiet). I think she may have been the first deer that I harvested from a hang-on stand in a sitting position. I am usually up long before they reach me. Now that my eyes are older, a sight without pins works better for me. I only share all this, because it fits with what you are sharing. Focus on the target!
I think I do this already intuitively.. definately with an animal in front of me, I'm fixated on that sweet spot. Will analyse my shooting on the bag tomrrow. Gratitude. Happy hunting ❤
I release as soon as I get a good sight picture. Hunting for the "perfect" shot just leaves to pin travel. He's correct, nobody can hold anything completely still. Slow controlled breathing and release on exhale. Inhale before the aim, exhale, first good placement and release.
Really just practice enough like this that your brain just aims for you because when you don’t think about it muscle memory takes over and does it for you
Your videos and explanations are the best I have seen on UA-cam. I picked up some good points in this video. I would like to see you do a video on properly setting up a 3 pin and 5 pin sight. Keep up the good work.
@@BowOnlyOutdoors I like to see properly setting up out of the box setting up a 3 pin sight. I have seen different videos where one person said that you set up the first pin by moving the sight box and then you set the middle pin by moving the pin. Someone else said that you move the sight box for the top and middle pin. Also before you set up your sights, should make sure that your rest is setup properly? Thanks for asking me. I believe you can easily clarify these questions through a video.
I had my first archery lesson as an adult (and my first time firing my bow in about 15 years) last week. I went from not even hitting the paper at all to getting into the intermediate rings. My aim only started noticeably improving when I started basically ignoring my sight pins and looking around / past them.
I’m VERU new to archery, but have been shooting guns for years. This is the exact opposite of what I’ve always been taught to do (focus on the front sight)….but I’ll give it a shot.
That’s why shooting with both eyes open is better. Makes target easier to see past ur pin. That’s exactly why my son is going through right now this video helped because of course why listen to dad.
Glad I watched this. Trying my hand at archery soon and apparently the aiming technique is the opposite of firearms aiming. I've been shooting for 20 years, 8 time expert in the Marines. When shooting firearms you focus on the front sight post. If your target is clear you're doing it wrong. Will definitely be an adjustment to focus on the target and not the sight.
I will go out today and give this a try with my new bow. Because that sounds exactly what im going thru. Thank you for the tips. I'll update later with my new results. 👍
Paused the video... got to our home range... a few arrows latter: my groups are now the half the size as previously. Aaaaaand now I can shoot with both eyes open !!! Up until now I was so confused. A few months ago I was still shooting barebow. Righthand, my right eye is almost blind (45%), I shot intuitively and shot just as well as with the compound bow. Now I understand it, before that I just looked at the target. With the new compound, I suddenly looked at the sight. Thank you so much man.
I think its verry interesting what opinions all the different shooters have. On a pistol you focus on the sights on a rifle you should focus on the target on a bow with some sort of aiming device most poeple say you should focus on the pin. Now you say focus on the target witch i have to do anyways because i shoot classic intuitive. My rule of thumb is the one that hits the target is right. So if you dont hit it you just havent found your style. I noticed to if i shoot rifle im much more calm maybe its because i dont see the movement of the rifle that much.
Absolutely. It’s your perception of the sight and the target and what you’re comfortable with. Most archers find it most comfortable with this method because of the extra movement, but not everyone is the same.
New Sub Sir. Thank you for you great insight. I’ll be trying this at the range tonight. I’m not new to compound bow shooting, but not old either. Any and all of your insights and tips for my improvement is greatly appreciated. As an aside, I do hope that you and all of your loved ones are staying safe and healthy during these crazy times. Should anyone unfortunately have become ill, I hope and pray for a speedy and full recovery. Cheers, Dave from Toronto
I teach people this all the time. I tell people it's like learning to drive a car. You want to look up the street not down your hood. Same thing with sights and targets. Makes it super easy with both eyes open to. Though it is weird at first.
This is exactly right this is the best way for archers to understand and it Works 100%. The first shot or two provided your bow is setup properly, and with good form, release, n follow through your arrow will find the bullseye!!! I taught my Nephew this 15 yrs. Ago and he was stunned at how much easier n consistent it was to shoot n hit the center of the bullseye.👍🏹🏹

...OK Josh, excellent video. I suffered terribly with target panic (anxiety), not realizing I was focusing on my sight pin. I finally figured it out on my own a couple of years ago but your video and information will save a lot of archers lost time and missed shots. Visually "acquire" your target long before you raise the bow and draw the arrow...
Yes! So true! Have to visually acquire the target before the shooting process even starts. Thank you for watching and for the comment! I know I struggled with it before I understood what I was focusing on.
What did u learn I put my pin on the target.. Now dude who I bought the Hoyt from said last week put the ring in the middle of your target not the pin now I'm really confused
@@BowOnlyOutdoors in the compound when looking through the peep sight the sight pin gets automatically clear and the targt get blurry , how do i correct this? I know in recurve its easy coz there is no peep. pls advice
This is great advice and it works. I’ve also heard some bow hunters say that they use the top of the pin itself as the area to put on their intended target instead of having the pin cover the bullseye. While others say they cover the bullseye
Thanks for the tip. What you said makes sense. Cant wait to try this. I missed my chance at a monster buck because i was focusing too much on getting the correct pin to align last year, wind change direction, it caught my scent, and booted.
Dang it! Sometimes those scenarios create the best learning situations. Wishing you the best of luck in this upcoming seasons and hope you get a good one!
Same thing with practical pistol shooting . Especially with slide mounted optics you can occlude the dot to help. I wonder about sticking black tape I. Front of your pine would do the same
This helps a lot well explained, well executed, and that close up at the end show's some result; for those who doubt, pay attention to the foot steps, you'll notice the distance ;) Thank you for sharing
Great advice. I concentrate on the target. I was taught that in the Marine Corps. You want the rear/peep sight and the target to be clear. And you want the front sight post/pin to be blurred. If you're a hu ter, you want to see the movement of your target. So you can alter your shot. You will definitely shoot better. It might not make sense, but once you're accustomed to it, you'll wonder why you did it the other way in the first place.
@EggShensSixDemonBag You must have been in the new Corps. How do you see your target at distance if your concentrating on your front site? Get your site picture, then blur the front site to see target and any movement. Shot expert every time doing it that way.

Nice tip. New bow shooter, but reminded of target focus pistol and rifle shooting, Duh! Thanks
Night and day difference. Instant improvement. Thanks.
I went from 6in groups to 1/2in groups just by doing this! Many people wouldn't realize this is there issue
Insaaaane grouping!! Will definitely have to try this out
It feels funny at first but without a doubt this is the way. Even your bad shots aren’t bad when you get this method down to a habit
Thank you for the tips! I’m new to archery and Il definitely have to try this next time I shoot.
This makes so much sense. Definitely trying it tomorrow. Thank you fornposting this
Really just practice enough like this that your brain just aims for you because when you don’t think about it muscle memory takes over and does it for you
1:39, that’s good to know because I’ve trying to hold the pin dead still unsuccessfully. It usually winds up with my bow biting my forearm.
Your videos and explanations are the best I have seen on UA-cam. I picked up some good points in this video. I would like to see you do a video on properly setting up a 3 pin and 5 pin sight. Keep up the good work.
Thank you James! More specifically, what do you all want to see on setting up a 3 or 5 pin sight?
- Josh
@@BowOnlyOutdoors I like to see properly setting up out of the box setting up a 3 pin sight. I have seen different videos where one person said that you set up the first pin by moving the sight box and then you set the middle pin by moving the pin. Someone else said that you move the sight box for the top and middle pin. Also before you set up your sights, should make sure that your rest is setup properly? Thanks for asking me. I believe you can easily clarify these questions through a video.
@@jehanlon1 absolutely! I would be happy to make a video over it. I will add it to the list!

@@BowOnlyOutdoors You are awesome!!!
I had my first archery lesson as an adult (and my first time firing my bow in about 15 years) last week. I went from not even hitting the paper at all to getting into the intermediate rings. My aim only started noticeably improving when I started basically ignoring my sight pins and looking around / past them.
Son & I are new in archery !!
Thank you ❤️
I’m VERU new to archery, but have been shooting guns for years. This is the exact opposite of what I’ve always been taught to do (focus on the front sight)….but I’ll give it a shot.
Thank you so much! I reach a point in which i could not understand what I have to do to improve precision an this video really helped me a lot!
Sick! I’d love 30 minutes of shooters with Josh. Thanks!
That’s why shooting with both eyes open is better. Makes target easier to see past ur pin. That’s exactly why my son is going through right now this video helped because of course why listen to dad.
Dad knows best!
This improved my shooting significantly, not just with my bow but also with my black powder iron sights... Thank you!
Thank you Tim!
Great information, didn't realize how much that helps!!!
Hi Josh, I have been a bow hunter for many years, and ….try as I might…..could never consistently place my groups. Thankyou for the help.
You are very welcome!
Thanks for the tip. I’m definitely gonna work on that technique.
I will go out today and give this a try with my new bow. Because that sounds exactly what im going thru. Thank you for the tips. I'll update later with my new results. 👍
Hope it helps!
Brilliant advice has lifted my game
Getting into archery this year. Very helpful and informative man. Thanks!
I find this true because when I shot before I seen this I was all over the place thank you
Yep, great tip. I figured out the same thing a few years ago.
Such a helpful video!! I'm a total newbie at archery and can't wait to try this at the range
I hope you find it helpful! Thank you for the kind words!
You’re very welcome! I am glad to see that it has helped you!
Thank you for this. Very helpful, I’m new to bow hunting
Just found your channel. Great content! You got yourself a new subscriber!
Thank you!
Thanks very much I will try this I been trying to use the pin and it’s very very hard
smooth man. the ending was smooth.
Thanks for the advice it means much to me. 😁👍👍
Finally some real advice that makes sense.
Thank you soooo much man!!! Definitely trying this tomorrow!!!
Cheers,
Dave from Toronto
Thank you very much! Hopefully this helps you out, let us know if you have any questions! - Micah
Bow Only Outdoors
Will do Sir.
Cheers
In new to this and this is very helpful. I’ll definitely keep this in mind next time I go out.
@@keithdodson7536 hell yeah brother. I'm glad the young man was able to learn from someone with knowledge. So great to hear about kids out shooting bows instead of score streaks in COD. Good job being an amazing uncle :)
...OK Josh, excellent video.
Front of your pine would do the same
Thanks soo much helped me become more consistent and accurate
As I am new to bow hunting, this helps me a lot and something to work with. Thanks
You’re welcome!
This helps a lot well explained, well executed, and that close up at the end show's some result; for those who doubt, pay attention to the foot steps, you'll notice the distance ;) Thank you for sharing
Thank you very much! I’m glad you found it helpful.
Im going to share this video in a group Im a part of. Very simple but important. I didn't give it too much thought but I will now!
Not sure what Marine Corps you were in but mine, the US one, you focus on the front site tip.
@EggShensSixDemonBag You must have been in the new Corps. How do you see your target at distance if your concentrating on your front site? Get your site picture, then blur the front site to see target and any movement. Shot expert every time doing it that way.
@@papaschuette Dunno, brotein shake, but consistently shot 8 or 9 out of 10 at the 500, Rife Expert and got PMI qualled while on FAP to the range, so there's that. Fundamentals.
@@EggShensSixDemonBag Sounds like we took different paths to the same result.

Go to the 6.50 mark, buttercup.
This was posted 11 years ago. I entered 28 years ago, so I'm not sure what "new Corps" you're talking about. I question if you were actually in the Marine Corps if you were taught to focus on the target with fixed iron sights.
Thanks a lot man I got asked by a good buddy of mine to shoot league with him and I wasn’t shooting to great and I needed a new bow so I bought one and got so frustrated because I can’t shoot well, I tried this and now I’m getting constant thanks a lot
Love to hear it! Keep up the good work!
Mmkay ...imma try this definately ❤❤
I get it, especially in a hunting context. But why does focusing on the front sight work for firearms?
Thank you bro I just started three days ago and I was like what are these pins for and I focused on them and my target got super blurry then I focused on the target 100% and it worked started nailing them
Got my first bow yesterday I'm excited to start shoot today
Thank you. That information really works!
thanks i did not realize i was doing that just went and tried and it helped
Well said! Thanks for the advice.
My pleasure! I'm glad it was helpful!
Thank you this makes so much sense.
This makes a lot of sense I’m going to give this a try thank you
Im practicing my aiming to go to my fist competition i will use this technique tomorrow, thank you!
💯% correct! Great video…..
Cheers for this precious tip🙏
Your instructions must be very helpful for all archers in whole wide world.. Thanks a lot😊
Good video! I've found that when I shoot long range, pin focus works better. For me that starts around 80 yards. Younger folks with sharper eyes can probably target focus further than that.
