Spawndon No TC was forbidden from 94 until 97 or 98. So it was more less in the hands or feet of the drivers. The NoTC Rule was abondened because it was hard to proove if someone used TC. But Berger Definitely isnt looking as if he is using Traction Control
the cars also dont work well generally when driven sideways. the aerodynamics arent designed that way, and the days when tires were designed for large slip angles and supensions were so tuned ended three decades before. in all ways these are not generally tolerant or rewarding of this sort of driving. it is great to watch though and in this situation it appears to be his fastest option.
Mladen Lakovic yeah, today if you see a F1 oversteering is just as a result of the driver's mistake, you know that the lap time will be affected negatively, and often it ends with a spin. Wow..
iehen Yeah I remeber watchin WRC in the 90's as well, where everyone was sideways all the time because it was the fastest way. It was awesome to watch. F1 is getting back to that a little since the cars have less down-force and power is rising. :)
You can see that Gerhard went wide, so instead of losing speed by tapping the brakes, he stepped on the gas pedal to lose the back end so he could make the turn. What phenomenal skills these drivers had back in the day.
+Kenna fajar putra As if F1 drivers don't have 'skill' anymore. Sure, nowadays you can just pick up anyone from the street, put them in Lewis Hamilton's car and instantly get pole positions and race wins. Why are the drivers even paid real money these days?
Jon Lenin remember this guy drive it a 1500hp(!) F1 car in 1985 a car that even had spinning wheels on the 4th gear! Today I hear engineering tell the driver where and when he should brake... 🙈
Guess what they banend Cigarettes sposrs, and smoking people are even more, they banned alchool and drinking people are more, that prooves the nonsense of banning sponsorships, i ddidn't start smoking because of F1 stikers
I'd like to see drivers use a combination of grip and drift like keiichi tsuchiya uses in like the last 5 minutes of drift bible. Seeing cars sliding/drifting for speed looks way much cooler than shitty competition drifting
@chioska14 The track was a bit different than it is today, Monaco in 95 had the wall on the inside of the first corner, the swimming pool was very tight and the "schumacher parking" corner had a 90 degree left before hooking back onto the front straightaway instead of a slightly straight line. The cars have improved due to aerodynamics and grip from the tires.
now this is what i call F1! they really need to do something to make modern f1 more fun to watch. back then it used to take skill just to get the car around the track
The track is actually slightly tighter (chicane after tunnel) these days, modern cars just have much more downforce, more power with a smoother power delivery and faster gear changes, better quality tyre compounds.
look at turn 1 st devote, look at swimming pool complex, look at entry to rascasse. all have have been opened up substantially, added with what you pointed out, a lot faster these days.
gearchanges are huge, tire improvements are huge, brakes are better, that is huge. downforce improvement generally is huge but not sure if its as decisive at monaco. power delivery helps a lot but a good driver can do amazing things here and as a result id say this is less decisive except for extreme improvements or differences. Track changes render comparison not directly useful- its not the same track anymore.
Matt P No, they've been opened up. At Ste Devote, the barrier at the apex was removed and replaced with a flat(ish) kerb. The pit lane runs to the right of where the barrier originally was, along the right-hand carriageway of the junction (travelling in the direction of the circuit). It has never passed "through the corner". The cars have passed to the left of the traffic island there, on the left-hand carriageway, since Ste Devote was first tightened up, years before this video. The swimming pool and La Racasse have also been opened out, removing barriers. See this article: www.carthrottle.com/post/how-the-monaco-grand-prix-circuit-has-changed-since-joining-the-f1-calendar/ Even has a handy overhead shot of Ste Devote... The original poster is correct.
I know... that Ferrari was the 412 T2 and the engine was the V12 Type 044/1 at 75º. The V10s i was refering to were from the 1996-2005 era. If you read carefully, i implied the Mclaren MP4/13 of 1998 in the first paragraph. Thats what i was talking about the "good old days". I like the noise of the V12, but V10s were much more performant engines, they were lighter and had less fuel consumption than the Ferrari V12. The only circuit were the V12´s made sense were in the old Hockenein circuit.
Press 1 - for the 1st drift Press 8 - for the 2nd (and ** p a f e k u t o **) drift Absolutely stunning not just for the entertainment, but also how just purely talented both Alesi and Berger on the Ferraris at that time! Thank me later.
When I looked at the title of this video and its length, I assumed we would see him moving VERY slowly. I see I was quite wrong - a great lap indeed. What car was Panis driving in 1995? I'm pretty sure a full 2 seconds is good.
I disagree. Look at the onboard perspective between 0:07 and 0:09 , there you can see that the Ferrari 412T2 did not have a round steering wheel. In fact, in 1995 Gerhard Berger was steering the car with this 'pretzel'-shaped steering wheel.
When you're in the middle of qualifying but have some tofu to deliver.
JohnDeere's ftw When you turn off the team radio and pump up some eurobeat instead.
Thats trash. F1 will not match to eurobeat tho.
Initial D reference
1:53 the best drift EVER!
Piquet pass on Senna by drifting around the outside is even better. Nonetheless, what Berger did here is a work of art.
Piquet also managed to flip off Senna during said drifting overtake! lol
The best thing is that these cars aren't set up for drifting so something like this is an extra treat.
+MrNinjaFish traction control you mean?
...yes
Spawndon

Nino Schier 2001 actually.

1:53 absolutely magnificent!
1:50 is what you're looking for and its well worth it.
+BollocksUtwat
It was, and you're correct.
you're correct
Actually, I was looking for boobs!
1:51 is just sensational!
Well, you don't see that every day! Fucking SPECTACULAR!
Mladen Lakovic yeah, today if you see a F1 oversteering is just as a result of the driver's mistake, you know that the lap time will be affected negatively, and often it ends with a spin. Wow..

cc Mr. Watson
i love it!!!

***** Tbh, there was nothing to complain about then.
youre absolutely wrong
Jon Lenin remember this guy drive it a 1500hp(!) F1 car in 1985 a car that even had spinning wheels on the 4th gear! Today I hear engineering tell the driver where and when he should brake... 🙈
love these days. Simple Aero, no DRS. 2-3 Buttons on Steeringwheel and V12 NA.
When driving was about the driver, not the car.
a must see round ! Berger was anyway one of the most spectacular driver in history
F1 in the mid 90s was pretty spectaluar time cars had great engines they looked great and you still had proper advertising on the cars
+STEFAZON500 Like cancer death sticks?
+Grim Bonkers
Most people die of cancer anyway.
+Grim Bonkers What about Martini on Williams cars now, Alcohol is second biggest killer after Smoking in terms of damage..
Guess what they banend Cigarettes sposrs, and smoking people are even more, they banned alchool and drinking people are more, that prooves the nonsense of banning sponsorships, i ddidn't start smoking because of F1 stikers
Grim Bonkers they payed for the racing before all the pussies took over.
No kids, he didn't turn off the traction control. There wasn't traction control. They were real pilots with real cars.
That's what i call real Formula 1......fantastic Sound as well
+CERNIUM Everything always changes. That wasn't "real F1", that was one short moment in F1.
to me....and other racing fans arround the world....it is the real f1.....:-) or better...it should be like that....
This was the real F1. Period.
Hell of a driver!
- Look Gerhard, I have 240SX and I can do awesome drifts!
- Bitch please 1:51
- ...
Berger drove that Ferrari really well around Monaco. Lovely drifting!
I love how the marshalls lean over to watch when Gerhard is drifting it out of Casino.
Ive been watching this for yrs and i never noticed that
Fantastic F1 , sound , beauty ........
Those rare times when everything lines up and creates perfection. Monaco, 1995, Berger, the Ferrari V12.... and he DRIFTS it! Spectacular...
I can't see any ..... wow that's awesome :O
Glorrrrrious!! That's a man who loves his racing! Awesome!
every time I see that I miss the old Heroes more ! great drift Gerhard !
I remember watching this live. The sheer balls of the guy to drift a car at Monaco of all places.
That cars is just beautiful
This is what legends are made of
It`s a shame that these times are over...I just love this sound Ferrari V12, fantastic!
Hells YEAH!!!
...back when real men drove real cars
Goosebumps!!!! Every single time I watch it!
this is just more epic than today
He earned his money that day with that car!
Absolutely!
Great driver but very underrated. Pure skill call this.Simply awesome.
¡¡Qué SINFONÍA eran esos V12 de los `90!! :) :)
Una pena que todo haya cambiado... para peor opino yo. :( :(
Berger & Alesi, what a team!
Yep the cars from the early90s were beautyful
the circuit is another, these f1 were so nice and so beautiful to listen
TWO WORDS:
FUCKING AMAZING !!!
Absolutely magnificent
I'd like to see drivers use a combination of grip and drift like keiichi tsuchiya uses in like the last 5 minutes of drift bible. Seeing cars sliding/drifting for speed looks way much cooler than shitty competition drifting
Senna is proud of his friend
love it!!!!
What a control..what a beautiful cars...
Berger was one crazy dude... on and off the track.
I think this is the car with the most spectacular engine sound ever
Smooth :)
very sad for me Monaco without AYRTO SENNA ONE OF THE BEST GERHARD's FRIEND. VERY DARK EMOTION's
Great stuff! Love John Watson on the commentary too, one of my favorite besides Murray.
Espectacular!
i miss old f1

This comment is nine years old. In the meantime, F1 got worse and worse.
amazing they go 10 seconds a lap faster in qualy these days. albeit, the track has been modified substantially and openend up.
The track is actually slightly tighter (chicane after tunnel) these days, modern cars just have much more downforce, more power with a smoother power delivery and faster gear changes, better quality tyre compounds.

Downforce is huge at Monaco, especially just before swimming pool

he became the F1 as one.

The ferrari V12 sounds just like a boss.
Good god, he's mental!
Great drive! Like 80s...

GLOOORIUOS 1:52
Ronnie Peterson, Jody Scheckter ; Gilles Villenueve and Gerard Berger Are DRIFT KINGS!!!!!
"Drifting isnt fast" Tell that to Berger :V
Sometimes you just have to force the piss out of it to clear the corners faster.
Imagine being inthe tunnel when this this went through. You'd get permanent hearing damage, but it would be worth it.
Press 1 - for the 1st drift

He been learning from his friend Senna :)
1:50 "Absolutely magnificent"
Genius
Чистое удовольствие!))
When I looked at the title of this video and its length, I assumed we would see him moving VERY slowly. I see I was quite wrong - a great lap indeed. What car was Panis driving in 1995? I'm pretty sure a full 2 seconds is good.
and also the track was re surfaced, which made it faster.
Panis was driving for Ligier in 1995. I think it was the JS41 car but I'm not 100% sure.
this is what i called real formula 1
The cars seem faster than these in 2012 but that's probably just the way it looks like...
Press 8 for respect.
At that point when drifting an F1 car its like a go-kart! Same aspect but on a whole different scale
i can feel the horses
thelast f1 v12 engine
nice cars back than
Quien esta aqui por el drift de berger que se hizo viral el 3/11/2020?
in 1995 Ferrari vas still using a V12 :)
The track is much faster nowadays with the new swimming pool and the new rascasse
@chioska14 oh yes and the layout of the track also improved by BEING DIFFERENT
John Watson !!! super comm.
When balls counted !
same here ^^
Watson and Edwards 😌
And now they qualify on 1.10s
Fucking hell!
That's not so true. If you realise, corners are easier to take nowadays, because many of them doesn't have a wall now.
I disagree. Look at the onboard perspective between 0:07 and 0:09 , there you can see that the Ferrari 412T2 did not have a round steering wheel. In fact, in 1995 Gerhard Berger was steering the car with this 'pretzel'-shaped steering wheel.
Had no idea Ben Edwards had been commentating on F1 for so long
improved by 10 seconds n about 15 years :)
The 10 seconds of lap time improvement has mainly come from the decrease in weight accomplished by removing the driver's balls...
What are you talking about?? Сince the configuration of this urban track was noticeably changed
Fast & Furious Tokyo Drift: Challenge Acepted
Oops never noticed the answer below! Sounds like it was definitely 1989 then!
Fun fact: Berger didn't like oversteering setups.
0:26 there is the big drift ;)
