Do it on one lap, it was a mistake on the throttle. Do it on every lap and you are deliberately planning to power slide in that corner. In a F1 car that is definitely not designed to do it. Remember, these cars are built to stick like a bad rash to the tarmac. Gerhard is one of my heroes. Love his sense of humour and he is one of the greatest drivers ever.

+ Bob Adams Ele remember Rubens Barrichello. A great driver, but Rubens had no luck.
Thankyou so much for this, I have been looking for this clip for years... remember watching this live. That second pass through Casino Square is awesome.
I love how the commentators are just beside themselves! I love the slides! Great to see Gerhard having so much fun - now there was a driver who should have won Monaco and a championship :(
Thanks for posting this! I remember watching this live in 1995, and eagerly awaiting the review of the year video so I could see it again, but it wasn't on there. So I only had to wait 15 years.........
That slide out of casino-corner in his 2nd lap is just stunning. i never saw such a slide in an f1 car before, i couldnt remember that one. just glorious! that is the way a f1 car should be driven, not that bullsh*t nowadays.
This is an totally amazing video to watch , thank you for posting. Gehard Berger displays his incredible skills as he really pushes his Ferrari around the Monaco Circuit. As a previous commentator rightly said, you cannot "drift" an F1 car, well apparantly Gehard Berger can, and he did :D
I'm a 43 year old Irish guy who started watching F1 in 1993 from the 94 season onwards Damon Hill was my guy so much so I took up riding motorcycles so I could wear Graham/Damon Hill's helmet colours. I remember that 95 season and being disappointed Damon's challenge fell apart. But when I look back what an amazing season......V8's V10's V12's, less tech, drivers who put it on the line, cars you could somewhat relate to your own motor, no pre determend races because of computer projections. That era is the classic quote you'd say to you kid "Back in my day".
The red mist as an art form, wonderful passion. This is where, even if you're not a fan, you can only marvel at the awe of Ferrari. You can see from this why their emblem is a prancing horse!
What a great commentator, John Watson! For me he was the best besides James Hunt. John and James would have made a great duo but unfortunately there was a Muddy Talker.
I don't want to be a smart-ass either, but this WAS in 1995. The cockpit side walls were raised only in 1996, not in 1995 (The only team that volountarily increased the cockpit walls already in 1995 was the Sauber team with the C14-Ford after Karl Wendlinger's accident in Monaco in 1994). The deep kayak-shaped cockpit apertures also were a contributor to the severity Mika Häkkinen's accident in Adelaide 1995. In 1996, the cockpit cushioning became mandatory.
Berger ran in the most competitive time in Formula One, He went up against Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, and Keke Rosberg. 151 race victories between those 5 men and 12 world driving championships, and yet Berger still won 10 races despite that collection of legendary drivers.
@azidahaka2 no electronic aids, man. the faster times are down to the aero(more downforce, less drag) better chassis and suspension, thus more grip and speed through the corners. no launch control, no active suspension, no traction control. F1 drivers were, and always will be, very fast. no use comparing different drivers of different eras. If sebastian vettel had driven in f1 back then, no doubt he would have posted roughly similiar times to gerhard.
Look at the Steering wheel. He is not pushing any buttons, he is simply driving. Today they have many many buttons they even push them in the corner. Earlier: Step into the car and drive Today: step into the car, drive change this, change that, push this push that. I think would like to have a steering wheel like in this Video, an not like a gamecontroller Only my opinion
Modern F1 drivers who? Great video, Gerhard was a very underrated F1 driver, but he had a lot of natural speed and car control! He deserves more recognition!
Screaming fast 412 T2 paired with a fast driver like Berger = wicked 4 wheel 600bhp drift/slide cornering sickness! Without a doubt, this is Jedi F1 driver in action!
Great pilot...he did a magnificent 4th place on grid and a great podium the day after...Ferrari was rubbish at that time, specially if compared to williams and benetton...anyway he also did something astonishing at casino doing that slide!!
@kralle7611 yes, basically. The diffusers will be cut down, that's good. But I dislike the idea of the rear wing flaps being adjustable from the cockpit. If it was possible to simply reduce the 'visible' wings (front- and rear wing) to the size of 1980-1982 (which means: the era of the ground effect cars, only w/o the ground effect sidepods now), that would be a good approach in my mind. minimum front wing, minumum rear wing, no curved underbody. btw, thanks for replying! :-))
I remember that Schumacher tested this Ferrari before he becomes the new One 1996. And he ask the Engineer and Directors why they don't have won the Championship whit this great Car and great Engine!!! He was enthusiastic about the power of the V12...
@AlejjSi Alesi & Berger hasn't can't drive the Benetton of 1996 too, so the car was only a evolution of the '95 and Schumacher won some GP with this car and that was more difficult to drive for some other...1995 was enthusiastic about the 95 Ferrari!!
He is playing with oversteer, with oversteer it´s true you have an uncontroled car, but you go away of the curve so fast, you only need a good hands and intelligence to know how to control it and where to use it correctly, pretty amazing by Berger.
@VinGee33 But I am not talking about handling of the Ferrari...berger and Alesi were saying its great ti handle, just the reliability wasnt simply there(or inteligence, how could Berger run out of fuel just before pitstop and Alesi just after finish lane at Canada?)
Excellent point luciano - you understand well that there are 2 elements involved - the set up of the car and the driver's use of it. Indeed- berger was doing a good job here to battle with a poor handling car. (But the really interesting question is: Was it handling badly because the drivers couldn't set up properly- or was it a very poor car design beyond ANY driver's ability to set up? ) Thats actually a difficult question to answer- but i suspect Berger and Alesi didnt have a clue on set up!
@Speedy00 Well It's tough for todays car to slide like this bcos theres so much downforce being created and theres so much new technology in the suspension and tires that they are so sticky to the surface.
the '95 Ferrari was gorgeous. one of the most beautiful F1 cars ever. Especially with that V12 music
Sadly it was a shitbox :(

John Watson commentary gold.
It's glorious!!!
Watson is a very intelligent man and always had good things to say about Senna too, unlike Walker!
Yes, he and Ben Edwards were fantastic and much better than Murray Walker, who for some reason only gets glorified so much by the Brits.

One of the best - if he only had the right cars at the right time (Ferrari 1990, Williams 1993-1997) potential multiple World Champion.
@@andrearojas1248 he should have won the 1995 championship... sadly the car was not on his side :(
Is this a joke? He was never on the level of Senna or Schumacher ...
@@drbest87 I agree with you. I like Berger, but I don't regard him as a great driver. He was a good number two.
@@andrearojas1248 In Season 1991 he did have the right car for winning the Championship, yet he had the wrong teammate....Ayrton Senna!
Lovely to hear John Watson and Ben Edwards again. They were a great team.

Great times - I miss it. Two legends are missing today, the V12 and Gerhard Berger!

GREAT DRIVER
I remember the race after Mr. Berger's father died, and Gerhard went out and put the smack down on his competitors... It brought tears to my eyes!!!
I remember this race too. He absolutely crushed the other drivers in Hockenheim
His ballsy move got him on the podium here while teammate Alesi crashed! A great driver. F1 has never been the same without him.
He drives the most beautifull F1 car ever like a kart :-) Really great to see! V12 is missed badly in F1!

Drifting a F1 car in Monaco? You really need to have serious racing skills...and big balls
The 1995 Ferrari was the only car that was lovely to look at that season.
