      I know there was a thing on tv about the making of that album and that's what he said or the beetles did it to convince him to do another take cause Kurt was a huge fan of them.

      Anthony Haller The Beatles reference was made by the producer Butch Vig, he said to it to convince Kurt to double track a lot of the vocals. He'd say that Lennon did it and Kurt would say ok let's do it. Dave Grohl did a fair bit of the harmonies on Nirvana's records.

    Wow. I understand that this video is a piss-take, but honestly its not that far off the reality. Definitely stuff like "lets do it again", "I don't recommend that", "yes, I can fix it in the mix" and "except for that, that, that, that and that it's perfect" gets mentioned. Not as many "nope"s but every audio engineer can relate to at least one of the things mentioned.

    Just some engineering bitch time... We've had a guy that didn't know what the pad button (or whatever it's called) was and the vocalist had to stand metres away from the mic so it wouldn't distort. He also didn't know how to use the program and spent an hour or so minimising and maximising the track, over and over again, and finally left takes in the final mix with the vocalist saying "that was shit" at the end of the song after his take, yet that was the one that the guy left in. And I might add he deleted the good takes. So much well spent money. Ahhh. XD

    • @Tweek5470
      @Tweek5470 9 років тому +20

      "Some stress" is an understatement. If you start recording people from the start and work with shitty bands you'll remember the days you only had "some stress" with nostalgic glee. The amount of dumb bullshit you will have to deal with from people that have wrong pre concieved notions is unfathomable. Drummers who tune everything as low as it will go and don't understand why all his drums sound the same. Bassists who, well just watch a glenn fricker video for that one. Guitarists who straight up copy what they "think" their idols do, and i am stressing "think". And vocalists who cant sing for shit. But for some reason we still love doing what we do :P

    • @DTrecording
      @DTrecording 9 років тому +62

      Basic principles of audio engineering apply to all genres, but you as a death metal artist wouldn't hire someone who is only familiar with the pop genre. Likewise, that engineer or producer would likely not take you as a client. It would just be a bad fit that neither party would be satisfied with.

    haha, spot on. Can really relate to my own experience as a recording engineer/musician! One thing tho, that I've learn over the years is that the quote in this video; "I can only polish a turd so much.." is very relevant. If you have bad musicians, you are never going to get it great. It just don't happens. I've heard a lot of descent bands from major recording studios over the years and figured out that it was descent and not "great" because of the band/artist, not the studio/gear/engineer etc..

Never mind, I didn't turn on the headphone amp sorry, do it again. how many band's is your EQ? Is that an xlr or 1/4 inch? DAW. Can I just use a midi? Dude, trust me, my drum machine is super realistic. DAW. Nah, I can just auto-tune it. You are a great vocalist just try again. DAW. Dude, like I'm saving for a full analog setup it's gonna sound way better! Daw.

    Spot on. You obviously have spent some time in the music "industry." Keep the parodies coming.

    My favorite quote. A quote. Which actually got me. A couple of band bookings for my studio. After they walked out on their recording session at one of my competitors studio. Because they didn't like with the engineer said to them. During their recording session. When they took too long to tune their guitars. According to the engineer. Who then told them. That they should send their guitars back to the factory, to have them tuned.
    I thought that was one of the funniest things I had ever heard. I didn't care how long they took to tune their guitars. I block booked, 6 hours time. I didn't work by the hour. They could take as long as they want. It gives me ample time to smoke another joint.
    Oh and that quote came directly from, my colleague, my competitor, my buddy, my sometime friend, George Massenburg. Some engineers may have heard of him. And I definitely thank him for that saying. That quote. Because I have worked with those bands. And they should send their guitars back to the factory to have them tuned. I don't care how bad they are. Though. I might ask them not to give me credit? I might not want to be associated with that recording. I have my integrity and reputation at stake. And I like to eat steak for dinner. Not hamburgers. So for heavens stake? I mean,, steak. You are then left with nothing. And all is for, SteakUm.
    I must be hungry?

    It sounds like Spongebob! "Nope...! Uh-Uh...! Negative...! Come on, come on get it right! Wrong...! Wrong...! Wrong...! Nope! Non! Negatory! Nyet!
    BRRR! BRRR! BRRR!
    Doh, and I almost had it!"
    (That last part was them running out of time for the day. Also, the BRRR's are like a timer going off for their session.)

    As someone who occasionally does sound engineering for bands I gotta say this is so fucking true. I'm usually stage technician and the sound designer in a theatre and I gotta say that most musicisians are far more "diva" than most actors I've met. However at least I don't usually have to work with complete beginners because they couldn't afford to record in my studio.

      Lol trust me the drumming was fine. They were using Cubase and just deleted entire fills and shit that I had and just replaced it with one snare hit, or just a cymbal hit. If Im paying you a shit ton of money to record me, it better fucking be me on the CD.

    My first studio was 1989... 3 german girls, none of whom could sing (but they were a band), one ausse'producer out of New York who could program the sh*t outta'my S950 and a 3 day weekend for a grand. Dude, you are on the money... after25 years I can say... you are on the money. Just forgot this one... "What? you wanna'book 15 minutes?" or "No no, mix it like this... that's what I'm paying you for" Then they hear it outside the studio and it sounds like I told them it would... but they're made at me ! Really, I love the music biz ! ! !

  • @wushupants

    OK I've definitely been through many of these, lol. Especially the BPM one xDDD. But yo... do most audio engineers typically sound this miserable? I don't like to make the bands feel like crap... I work *with* them, not against them... so this is odd to see.
    I mean yeah, there's a few problem bands here and there, but even then I make sure I don't disrespect them... and by consequence, they respect me back. I will say though, this does have some accuracy to it, lol.
