I kno this video is 3 yrs old but I'm thankful you shared this because it helped me find the right part number for the reversing disc. Thankyou for tis video and info.
Thank you for this video. I bought an old used Troy Built Horse 8HP and the previous owner said it needed a belt for reverse, but in fact, it has this little wheel with rubber on it just like you showed. It turns out the adjustment for reverse was set too high, so it could not engage. Your video was very useful for helping me understand how it was supposed to work. BRAVO!
A buddy of mine just bought two old troy bilts like this and wants me to fix them. One has a chunk of rubber missing from the reverse disc. This video told me what I needed to know. Thanks!
I've got a 7 hp Tecumseh troy bilt rear tine tiller that I bought a couple of years ago. I haven't had it running since then or in 2019. The rear tines are locked in, in the forward stage. And it's harder than hell to get started like this. Lol lol. It tills Beautiful when it does run though. It needs rebuilt completely but can't afford it right now. Thanks again for sharing your video with us.
I have what looks like the same tiller only mine has handle switches (don’t know what they do). They are little handles under the grips that do something. They are called forward interlock levers but haven’t seen them do anything. Any guesses on what they do?
Great info; I've got one identical to yours that the motor died six years ago; the dealer ordered a new engine, Kohler that was a exact fit ! My unit is a 1977 model. Am going to have to change belts first then am going to change reverse disc. Thanks for the video. These are great tillers.
Hay, nice job. Mind is the same but I have problem staring it. On yours the fuel pipe to start, is it possible to show me a close up to see how yours it made?
@@MrBriansAmazingWorld That's perfect timing I just did my first tilling job for a new client. Went over it maybe 6-7 times and the tiller was amazing. 30'x15'
I have a 1970 model of that tiller ... I have a ceramic disc that engages the pulley for reverse. Going to change over to this rubber wheel thing. Can I ask where you got it ???
If you change to a ceramic disk - you may need to change the opposing pulleys as well. At least on my horse tiller, the ceramic disk fits into a vee-groove instead of rolling on a smooth surface. There are also 2 identical v-belts for forward motion.
thanks for the tutorial brain, it took me a while to find the video with google search try putting in the search terms for the video the part number for the disk GW-1919 it may help with more views. Thanks again this looks pretty simple to replace!
I'm thinking you can remove the spark plug and feed a piece of rope into the cylinder to stop the engine from turning while you work on it, remember to remove the rope when you finish.
My 75 year old neighbor just Bartered for one the other day and he wants me to get it going for him The engine is fine ( replaced not long ago ) but it is stuck with the tines engaged When you pull the rope it turns the tines I'm wondering if there's any where to buy parts for it I don't even know what the levers do or that T handle sticking up in the middle I've never worked on one this old
Great job..my $150 7hp has no reverse but the Kohler engine sounds great..the disc is $20 on eBay..USA? who knows..BTW a good squirt of oil in the return spring might help that rope problem...
Check out Steve’s small engine saloon on fixing your pull cord. I believe you just need to pull it and clean the debris and spray it. I prefer silicone spray because dirt doesn’t stick to it.
It just needed to get used a few times. Was sticking up from sitting. Worst part was that mice built a nest out of insulation in the head fins and ended up blowing the engine up. Made a video about that and installing a new engine.
Thanks Brian, almost everything i needed to know,,, But, I couldn't get the reverse bolt completely out, & the disk is stuck solid. Should I use a screwdriver as a wedge, & pry between the the disk & belt pulley without hurting anything? You didn't show that part in the removal so I guess your old disk just fell off? Another problem I have is that the plastic gas tank, fuel line hose fitting leaks. It has a push-in rubber gasket or seal that got hard from age,,, & I can't find that part anywhere. When I pried it out of the tank, the rubber cracked. Do you have an easy FIX for that? Thanks
To remove a stuck reverse disk, disconnect the spark plug. Take a wooden stick and a hammer and tap the disk backwards, rotating the engine a little each time with the pull-cord. Be patient and the disk will gradually slide off.
Mine is a 1972 vintage same engine HH60 inherited from my wife`s grandfather. It has a completely different reverse disc wheel . It is a solid friction disc shaped like the inner V of the pulley that it meshes with , held in by a 9 /16 bolt through the center and 3 , 3/16th Allen cap bolts secure the 2 1/2 washer plate that secure it to the backing hu . It works still without issues . Somewhere along the line Troybilt must have changed the design to what you show in the video. Seeing American branded product turned into solid crap by greedy manufactures is sad ..and maddening because in addition to being crap , the price one has to pay for it is ridiculous. I wish I could post pictures of mine ..51 years of use on it and it works flawlessly still on the original drive belts . Just changed transmission oil last week . Awesome machine ...the repair / service manuals are still available . PDF through MTD present time the parent company .
Shouldn't be to hard to rewire. Only a few wires. Switch to solenoid. 12+ to solenoid and solenoid to starter. 12- to ground. Other wire for 12+ to charge the battery.
Great video Brian! Thanks. Quick question: is it just the disk you replaced that has the rubber? Is the lower disc also rubber coated? Or does it just contact metal on the lower pulley? Thanks!
@@MrBriansAmazingWorld Thanks for the reply! My local farm store had one in stock. Picked it up and had it swapped in no time. Your channel lock trick saved the day! I had to adjust the height of the nut on the spring just behind the reverse disc. With the extra rubber on the new disc it was engaging while in neutral. A couple turns to back out the bolt and raise the engine height in neutral position was all it needed. It's working like new again!
Some have 2 belts. Mine has 2 pulleys that you can move the belts between the 2 for different speeds. Mine also has the slow and fast controlled by the lever. So all together you have 4 different speeds to choose from depending how you set it up. If your pulleys are different sizes then you should only be using one belt.

Hey just got one of there what’s the T handle
The T handle adjusts the handlebars.
It allows you to turn the handle bars to the side so your not walking and packing down your freshly tilled soil.
IF you take it out it makes it easier to fill the gear box with gear oil , only until it comes out of the side plug
Brilliant video thank you

What’s “pathetic” about the new reverse disk?
The quality of it was not that great. Rather poor casting of rubber.

Did you pay the Troy Bilt OEM price of $63.49 for the Disc-reverse, or did you get the Ebay cheepo for $17.00 ?
I went with the ebay cheapo. And let me tell you the quality is atrocious. Made in USA. But it is working.
I'll go with the cheaper one then, I only use reverse when repairing small spots in the lawn where invasive grass set in

Man, you need to put some air in them tires.😂😂😂😂
The 2 speed is the right hand leaver. It takes two belts for proper operation.Better power.
Some models had 2 belts. This one uses one belt that can be move to change the gear ratio. Pulleys are different sizes.
