- Here is the next video for our weekly rhythm challenge.
We’re continuing to work with triplets and feeling the beat divided into 3 (three) even parts. One thing that I find helpful is listening for those phrases and words I use that have 3 (three) syllables or parts, and then asking myself if the syllables are evenly divided like a triplet rhythm in music or do I say some of the syllables more quickly or slowly.
If you find yourself in need of guidance with practicing this in your music, ask. I’ll do my best to help where I can or at least guide you to a place where you can begin to identify what you need to do when these patterns show up in a song or musical exercise you are learning.
If you’re like me, reading and counting rhythm patterns in music is challenging at times. Here are some suggestions as you learn to feel the rhythm on each beat:
Go slow to go fast.
Practice these patterns in groups of five or more.
Count the rhythm patterns out loud so that you can hear them as you practice each one.
Play them on your instrument or even simply tapping it out on a table or countertop as you count the rhythm pattern out loud.
This weekly rhythm challenge is inspired by my students who are learning to perform a variety of rhythmic patterns that may be challenging for them and they need support to practice counting and playing these patterns in their warm ups, technique exercises and songs they play each week.
Know someone who could benefit from this type of practice? Feel free to share this and the other videos that are available.
