Hello again. I am so glad you have recovered and are now well. Daisy is so gorgeous, whenever I see her I just have to smile. The quality of this restoration is second to none. Your manual skill and artistic flair means that your work is always beautiful and will give pleasure for very many years to come. The ebony stain with the gold dividers adds even more quality to this wonderful box. I would have like to have seen their faces when they saw it for the first time, I think that your mother in law will have great pride and pleasure showing it to her friends. This was so very thoughtful and another demonstration of your goodness and quality.
Hi Pamela. What a lovely and very kind comment. It’s so nice to know that you enjoy the effort I put into my restorations. Your support is really appreciated. Take care, David 😀❤️👍
This is lovely! 💕 You’ve not only saved this-now it’s a family treasure.
Daisy must have known you were frustrated; she brought you her best toy. 🥰
(also…glad you’re well now.)
Thanks so much 😀😀 Daisy is a pest when I’m working BUT she’s always a welcome distraction. She never fails to make me laugh 🤣🐶❤️
What a beautiful and useful gift. From the heart for your inlaws. I know it will mean much to them. Just gorgeous.
😀❤️
That is such a charming little box, and a beautiful restoration. I imagine they loved their gift. It's so nice to always get a visit with Daisy.
Hi Molly. Thanks very much, they absolutely loved it. Daisy says hi 😀🐶❤️
What a nice son-in-law you are! I bet they loved it!
They certainly did. 😀👍 I’m very lucky to have such great in-laws 😀😀
That poem was written by poet laureate and journalist Alfred Austin in 1896. The poem was about the Jameson raid which was an unsuccessful attempt to quash the Boers in South Africa and bring them under the rule of British Colonialism.
Hearing the name of the poem I immediately connected it to baronnette Leander Starr Jameson. He was a cruel brutal man and with as much fervor as the cruel English Generals in India at the same time was determined to crush the innocent Boer farmers into the colonial system. The raid was unsuccessful because the Boer used guerrilla tactics to protect their families and communities which the British forces had not encountered before. These same tactics were used by the Western Allies during World war 1 when the South Africans along with equally able Australians fought against the Ottomans in Egypt and the Germans in France.
If that box could talk it probably could tell a lot of tales. It is great that you restored it.
Thanks so much for the detailed info, much appreciated 😀😀👍
The poem is called “Jameson’s Ride”. IIRC, Alfred Austin was the last poet laureate appointed by Queen Victoria in 1896. I remember learning this poem in school. The poem is based on British colonial administrator Leander Starr Jameson and Cecil Rhodes, Prime Minister of the Cape Colony. Wikipedia has a nice little write-up on the incident.
Thats cool, thanks so much for the info. I love the Victorian era, I'll jump on to Wiki later 😀👍for a proper look. Thanks again
@@MayfieldRestorations No worries, mate. The tea box turned out beautifully, btw! Well done!
This is a great restoration, and a very unique, personalized gift. Working on small objects like this can be very fiddly and time consuming.
Hi Laura, it certainly was fiddly but worth the end result and they loved it 😀😀👍
Love this! What a special gift! We call our dog Lily nuisance, lol. She's ready to play, ALWAYS, no matter what you've got to do! Thanks for another great video!
Hi Jennifer. Nuisance is a great description 😂😂 I’m sure she’s a treasured nuisance though just like my Daisy 😀😀🐶🐶❤️
Lovely job again, I'm sure the in-laws would be very pleased with such a personalised gift as opposed to something bought from a store
Hi Tom, thanks very much. I thought, “ what do you get someone that NEEDS nothing”. They really loved it 😀😀
Great job David, the box looks beautiful and I'm sure your in-laws loved it 👍🏻
Thanks so much Linda. They loved their gift 😀😀
Aw my favourite antiques. Wooden boxes. I have a small collection that my dad has given to me. What a fabulous gift❤
😀❤️
I love watching small projects like this. It is a very thoughtful and personal gift, and I'm sure will be treasured by your in-laws. Loved seeing Daisy try to tease you away to play! My dog does the same. Usually at the worst times! Thank you for sharing this video, it was special.
Hi Anita. Thanks so much. Daisy always wants my attention and too be honest she normally gets it. 😂😂🐶❤️ Thanks for your continued support 😀❤️
"Jameson's ride" was written by the poet Alfred Austin who was born in 1835 and died in 1913 he wrote many poems
Thanks very much Richard, I’ll have a further look at his work 😀👍
Wow, that is just amazing! The pure resto was the way to go here, those are breathtaking. I would buy them if I lived closer. I love your new studio space too, that view is also amazing.
😀👍
Ah it's beautiful. Best pound ya ever spent probably. Hope the in-laws love it too.
Hi Emer, it was a bit expensive but worth it! 😂😂😂👍👍
@@MayfieldRestorations 🤣😂😂
When the video said ‘Time to strip’, I got so excited I choked on my coffee! 😂😂😂😂 Obviously, I got the wrong end of the stick.
Seriously though, that’s a wonderful present, made with such care and love. Anyone would be delighted to receive such a gift. What is it about wooden boxes? They are fascinating and magical. We all want to know what’s inside, or what’s been inside. Our curiosity it piqued the minute we see one. They could be full of rubbish or treasure, but we still want to poke about inside. Well done with this one David, it is quite magical in its transformation.
Hahaha, cheeky! 😂😂 I know what you mean about a wooden box, it’s like there is always going to be hidden treasure in there. Unfortunately, just Tea Bags in this case 😂😀👍
@@MayfieldRestorations Tea was always locked in a box at one time David, it was a very valuable commodity and still is if you’re dying for a brew. Your little wooden box is priceless, because it’s been restored with such love and care. x
What a delightful present. Well done David and Daisy 👏👏👍
Hi Michael. Thanks very much 😀😀👍
What a wonderful restoration of a lovely little box ! My late husband was fond of them as well and now I know what I will do with his small collection.
Job well done 😊 Cheers from a tea lover in the Finger Lakes of New York, USA
Hi Kim. I’m so pleased you liked it and it’s given you some inspiration to do something with your late Husbands collection. 😀😀
What a lovely and thoughtful gift! And of course a fabulous job. Look at that grain that was hidden. Wow! Thanks for sharing your amazing skill
Hi Leslie. Thanks very much for your lovely comment, you’re very kind 😀😀
Love what you did to that beautiful box David. I really like vintage quality pieces like that, and keeping them sympathetically restored.
Hi Carl, hope you’re well 👍 Really pleased you enjoyed this restoration, it was great fun to do 😀👍
What a wonderful and thoughtful gift. It’s beautiful.
Thanks so much Sibylle 😀😀
Beautiful work! I enjoy all your projects, and love seeing Daisy being her sweet self!
So happy you are feeling better now and wish you and your family continued health. Greetings from Florida.
Hi Juadonna, thanks for your lovely comments, you're very kind. Feeling much better now thanks. Best wishes to your and your loved one. D&D 😀🐶❤
it is a beautiful box your inlaws should be very happy
Thanks Deborah, they loved it 😀😀
A beautiful and thoughtful gift. 😚🐕
Thanks very much Gail 😀
Lovely little box and so useful. No doubt they will use it for years to come.
Thanks very much, they loved their gift 😀👍
I was watching this ‘Live’ in the reception area of the Victoria theatre in Halifax. When a couple asked what I was watching. Upshot is, they are reviewing your channel and videos as they have a baby grand piano whose top needs repairing. Watch this space!!
Hi Mother, I bet they thought you were odd watching UA-cam at the theatre 🤣🤣🤣 Not sure I’d get the baby grand in my workshop 😂😂❤️❤️
I asked them that. The top comes off. If you get the job, I want commission!!🤣🤣
What a beautiful and useful gift. I'd love a tea caddy like this, it's simply gorgeous
Thanks very much 😃
Totally and utterly unrecognisable from the beginning.
Match made in heaven for me a beautiful wooden box with tea in 🥰😍💖💞
(I love boxes and tins 🤣🤣)
I love my cuppa tea too. Thanks for joining the premiere ☺
David, you have an eye for diamonds in the rough! Great video and transformation of a simple wooden box into a treasured tea chest, just amazing and very well done! Laser engraving is a new trick for me and one I will have to investigate further.
Hi John. I'm loving that description of Diamonds in the rough 👍 Thanks for your kind words and the laser engraving is a pretty cool thing to do. You can pretty much engrave anything to become a personalised gift, wood, metal, plastic, leather. The one i used is great and very easy to use but the engraving size is limited. I have another one that is on a cradle and engraves much larger. 😀👍
Very pretty and thoughtful little tea chest! Im sure your inlaws loved it. Too bad the lock didnt have a key but, the little knob was a perfect addition! ❤
Thank you so much 😊
You wouldn't think something so small would take as much time as say, A DESK. Turned out adorable.
I know! This was definitely a labour of love Jay 😀👍👍
How lovely - what an amazing gift!
Thanks so much 😀😀
That turned out beautiful! What a wonderful gift!
Thanks so much 😀😀
Beautiful job and a lovely, thoughtful gift!
Thank you very much 😊
Sure you will be in the good book's with the in-laws after that restoration Dave, sure they will like it Mate, have a nice day all and Daisy !!! 🇬🇧🇺🇦. 😃😃.
Cheers Brian, they loved their gift. Have a good day. 😀👍
@@MayfieldRestorations I AM so glad they liked it .Perhaps they might watch the fixing of it? Daisy such a live with her jses gently I reading bun rsb
Lucky in-laws!! Gorgeous!
Hi Virginia, I'm always telling them that!! 😂😂👍
Beautiful box and a lovely gift. 💕🐾
Thanks so much 😀😀
This is such a wonderful gift! The selection of teas is the icing on the cake. I love the drawer pull you installed on the lid, because it goes so well with the rest of the hardware.
Thanks so much! 😊
A tea box. Genius 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼🇺🇸
Thanks Jodi, glad you liked it 😀😀
It turned out so charming. We like that laser teapot touch.
Thanks so much 😀😀
You sure did and expert job! It's so lovey and has so much care and love put into it. Wonderful. God Bless. OHIO. U.S.A.
You are so kind, thanks very much 😀😀
Amazing work as always it's simply beautiful, loved the personal touch, you have such an artistic eye. You really are a master craftsman. Love daisy she's really cute and of course she's quality control xxxx
Hi Freyja, Thank you so much, your comments are lovely as always😀 Daisy is definitely my quality control but she does get easily distracted. 😀🐶❤
Hint for getting out screws: Give it a good tap with the hammer before unscrewing. Screw will be much easier to remove.
Thanks for the tip Timo 😀😀👍👍
Lovely old tea box. Well done. I have one that has been passed down through the family for several generations. It’s actually bigger than this one and comes from a tea plantation that was once owned and operated by my great, great grandfather in what was then known as Ceylon. It’s a lovely box made of rosewood and has my mother’s family crest on it along with the year 1850. I use it as a keepsake box for very special photos and heirlooms.
Hi Chanda. Your special tea box sounds lovely and it so nice to have something that has been passed down the generations. I’m sure it is a treasured item 😀😀
A beautiful gift!
Thanks Robin 😀
The engraving was a lovely touch ❤
Thanks Donna, I was really pleased with how it turned out 😀😀
Have you ever found an antique tea caddy? When tea became the rage in the 18th century, and it was hideously expensive, the boxes were quite special, and the lady of the house kept the key. They were often in the shape of a pear, or had two containers inside - one for green one for black.
Ooo no I’ve never found one of those but I have seen them. It would be nice to restore one 😀
This was so, so satisfying to watch. Excellent result as always, David.
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it 😀😀
What a lovely gift. Can you tell I'm binge watching your videos?
Hahaha hi Joyce. I can see your comments popping up on all my older videos. Thanks for binging 😀😀👍👍
This is a truly lovely gift - beautiful!
Thanks very much 😀👍
Hi, David. The box is Walnut sewing box from the period 1900 and the side pieces you took out would of had a tray that sat of them with little compartments with lids for holding needles thimbles etc. like the compartments you made, and now it's a Tea Caddy good work David
Howdy David!! Such personalized gifts are far more endearing when received! Hope you in-laws were impressed by your efforts!!
Hi, my in-laws loved there present 😀😀
Great restoration - lots of patience needed for such a "little"project.
My wife can’t believe how patient I am with my restorations because I’m not with other things 😂😂😂👍👍
Maybe it was a writing box originally, hence the runners, a tray would have sat on top with pens etc… What a wonderful transformation though and that engraving looked incredible, when you sprayed it gold I thought you’d lost the plot but it ended perfectly, very clever. However, a box that beautiful deserves tea from Fortnum & Mason 😄
Hi Euchrid. Now that is a great thought! Makes perfect sense, paper underneath and pens etc on the top. If they want Fortnum & Masons tea they can re-stock it themselves 😂😂😂😀👍
What a thoughtful gift. Not only is it a stunning piece on its own, but the time, effort, and love you obviously put into it simply cannot be measured. I know it will be treasured for years to come.
Thanks so much 😀❤️
This is so lovely present! Great job!
These little screws are always pain in a butt 😂
Hi Alla - They certainly were 😂
Lovely and thoughtful ❤
Thanks very much Julianne 😀😀
The only thing I would suggest is a small chain on one side (or both) on the inside to keep the lid from opening all the way back. This might prevent the wear/damage on the hinges that had happened in the past. The box turned out beautiful and love the laser engraving. I would be proud to own a box like this!
Hi Janet. I did but a lid “stay” to install but it was too big and I wanted to finish the video. I’ve now installed a correct sized one for them 😀😀👍
Hope they lived their gift it’s beautiful😊
Hi Angela, they certainly did. 😀😀
I love it! So beautiful and useful at the same time.
Hi Jimmie, thanks very much 😀😀👍
No substitute for high quality proper screwdrivers. Lovely job though
Hi Stephen, I’ll add an expensive set to my Amazon Wishlist if you’re feeling generous 🤣🤣😂👍👍👍
Sanding by hand develops patience, patience builds endurance, endurance builds character. 😊
😀👍
Lovely thoughtful gift.
Well done! 🤗
Thanks so much Varol😀😀
Very beautiful!! Wonderful job on this!
Thanks so much Racheal 😀😀
Beautiful tea box..., beautiful Daisy! 😀
Thank you! 😊🐶❤️
Such a pretty box! I always enjoy your vision and skill.
Hi Sue, thanks very much for your continued support 😀😀
This is such a sweet gift for your in-laws!! I love the stain and the personalized engraving!
Thank you so much! 😃
Adorable tea box. 🥰
Thanks so much Carla. I loved doing this for my in-laws 😀😀
Great little restoration
Thanks Dennis 👍😀
Such a nice gesture, really pretty.
Hi Patricia. Thanks very much, glad you liked it 😀😀
Top notch work! I'll bet your In Laws are loving it. I'm thinking a cup of hot Earl Grey would be yummy about now! Glad to hear you're feeling better. Pats to Daisy girl. Be Well and Kind. Cheers! :)
Hi Sher. They loved the present and have it on display in their living room. Daisy says hi. 😀🐶❤️
Small doesn't mean easy 😅 Well done again.
I totally agree with you on that 😂😀👍
Stunning restoration Beautiful colour love the insert and the inscription talent beyond words definitely
What a love,y comment, thanks so much Gaynor 😀❤️
Another fantastic job. 👏👏👏👏
Thanks Adam 😀😀👍
That came out looking wonderful.
Cheers Jason. 😀😀👍
Beautiful result, thank you
Thank you Diana 😊
Totally exquisite 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks so much! 😊
What a lovely little gift for your in- law's. I am sure they where really touched by the personal care and thought you put into this gift for them, instead of just going out and buying an over the counter tea box for them. I would have added the felt to the bottom of the box too. It gives just that final touch of quality to it.
Thank you 😀😀
Brilliant idea and very very well done on the finished box
Thank you very much!😀
Blinking fantastic idea what an amazing gift love it
Hi Jennifer Thanks so much 😊
Such a beautiful restoration and a heartfelt gift. I feel inspired now to do a 'small' project like this...haha, (knowing it might get complicated) 😁
Hi Colleen. Thanks so much and it’s great to hear I’ve inspired you do do something similar. It was time consuming but well worth it 😀😀
Nice, a Tea Box, great idea .
Thanks Susie 😀😀
Use a soldering iron to warm up the old screws before you try to take them out by force. It works. This little box is probably late 18th beginning of the 19th century. So those screws were bonded with the wood.
😀👍
Love it!❤
😀❤️
Hi David! I like that you managed, to preserve the kind of patina- atmosphere of this piece. I mean there is not really heavy patina on it, but it looks as old, as it is indeed without being rough or full of scratches or things like that and that's just nice in a way ...!
Greetings from Germany from the silver fox which is the other David 😉🦊
Hi David, thanks for your kind words and glad you liked the finished piece. Thanks for your continued support 😀👍
Gorgeous and very creative!
Thank you! 😊
Really enjoyed that video David - the laser work was especially nice. You should have a few brownie points to spend now! 😉 Thanks for sharing - love this type of content.
Amazing upcycle too - wonder what the previous owner(s) would think! Look forward to the next one.
Hi Colin. Great to meet you the other day and really enjoyed putting the world to rights with you. 😀👍 Really pleased you enjoyed this latest video and I’ll be doing something very soon with the generous gift from you 😀😀
@@MayfieldRestorations You're so welcome David, I really enjoy your content and especially the way you save beautiful things from destruction. Best wishes. C
Thanks!
Thanks so much Margo, that’s really kind of you 😀❤️
As much work has gone into this as a bigger piece. Definitely worth it though x ❤
It was more work than I thought but really enjoyed doing it 😀❤️❤️
BIG TIP when screws and nails have been in the wood a long time they form a bond. Use an ELECTRIC SOLDERING IRON on the head for a minute . It expands the screw/nail and breaks the bond with the wood when it cools (seconds) it is so much easier to remove.
Great tip, thank very much 😀👍
Дуже гарна скринька!
Thanks so much
Beautiful! U should give gold leaf gilding a try sometime when needing gold too!!! 😊 North Carolina 🇺🇸
Thanks Kelley. I’ve used gold leaf (and silver) before and it’s very therapeutic. Good idea for the next time, thanks 😀😀👍
This was writing box but missing the insides. I have one in need of restoration 😢
😀👍
Aaaah.. I also want that box 😔 It's GORGEOUS ❤️💕🌻
Hello Daisy Dahling 🐕,
I posted another comment about the poem... What are the chances of that.. Its about my neck of the woods. I drive past Gold Reef City every day to and from work. It's a Theme Park now. It used to be a gold mine that closed in the 70ies. The Jameson Ride is a poem about The Jameson Raid which was a declaration of war. I posted the link to the full story in my previous post.
Hi Rochelle, great to hear from you. You want everything I’ve done! 😂😂😂 Daisy says hi 🐶👋❤️ Thanks so much for the info on the poem, have you commented elsewhere on this video as I can’t see it or have you posted elsewhere about this very poem? 😀😀❤️
