You’re so humble, “I think it looks pretty good” is such an understatement. You are a true craftsman and artisan!
You must have been a surgeon in your prior work. Excellent skills and patience. Glad your pets surround you. I'd take a break after 18 hrs too. 🥰
I’m still waiting for an option to purchase a t-shirt with “ I think is looks pretty good” on it! 😜 Tom, what’s the hold up?
Indeed
Thank you!
Thanks!
I think it looks Magnificent!
The French Polishing and that shellac stick really brought the box together.
The owner should be proud for bringing it to you for repairs and restoration!
Thanks!
with my morning coffee...such a lovely start to the day.
That's great! Thanks!
I am not a wood worker or have any knowledge of carpentry or antique repair and I just found your channel. There is just a peace about your voice and how you explain things. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and thank you for them.
You're welcome! I'm glad you like them
@@johnsonrestorationMy favorite has to be when you introduce yourself. It feels like I watch more videos just for that sentence. Anyway, Thank you for sharing your knowledge. It's a wonder to see a master at work. All the best!
What a beautiful restoration job on the jewelry box. 16 hours of work! Wow! We are honored and humbled to see you using the Lubricite and it thrills us to know we are a little part of that beautiful boxes’ history moving forward! Thank you so much Thomas!
You are so welcome! The Lubricite worked so well on this restoration. It made it look like I knew what I was doing! I'm looking forward to the next job I can use it for
I learned about Lubricite in this video. I will definitely use it for a box I want to make this winter. Looks very nice!
I think he deserves a sponsorship! What a sales idea, I think he said he has been using it for 58 years and hadn't thought of using anything else!
I hope the owner realizes you saved that family heirloom!
Glad to see inlay / marquetry restoration in need of your magic Tom.
Thanks!
Nothing more satisfying to watch than French polishing!
Thanks! It's satisfying while your doing it too!
A true tour de force, Tom ! Bravo!
Thank you Bill!
I bought a beautiful black laquer/ebonised wooden box inlaid with wood and brass the other day ( Napolean III French ) . I paid 5 euros as it had mostly come appart and needs a lot of gluing but is mostly all there. Looking forward to starting it. Before then I'm going to turn the bottom part of a tall case clock into a cupboard, gluing pinning and strengthening then shelving and finishing it. It has a lovely old lock and a round bevelled glass 'window' in the middle. I paid 10 euros, another job for August. I might line it with antique wallpaper. Another lovely video Tom, so happy to see your daughter following in her dad's footsteps xx
Thanks Stephanie! You've got quite a few interesting projects going on! Email some photos: thomasjohnsonrestoration@gmail.com
'lets pick up the action..' you crack me up tom! Such great relaxing viewing mate
Thanks!
Nice to see the box go back together you made a loverly job
Thank you!
That was a great deal of careful work on the veneer. Turned out very nicely. I always look forward to the next day in your videos to see you come back to the workshop with your cup of coffee/tea. Kind of makes everything right with the world for some reason. Thanks for sharing these insights to your passion and expertise.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks

Mr Johnson you make it look so easy. I wish my pad lacquering came up so well as quickly as yours
Thanks! I struggle with the padding also - I didn't show that in the video! Small objects like this box aren't too bad - I still can't do larger pieces very well. Steel wool and wax bring it all together at the end
Beautiful work and superb video! I love the little chicks peeping softly in the background too!
Thank you very much!
A lovely box, a heirloom piece and beautifully restored.
Many thanks!
Your close-up camera work is professional quality.
Thanks! I have to credit the camera for that!
Well done, Thomas
Thank you! (no mention of the metric measurements!)
I can’t believe how much I miss you in two weeks 🤦🏻♂️
That's nice Fater! Thanks
Thank you for another wonderful video.. Have a good weekend.
You're welcome! You too!
Tom it looks great you did a wonderful job on it!
Thank you!
Another beautiful job Tom
Thank you so much! 😀
I saw this art in an antique table many years ago and now is amazing see it again, I hope it doesn't disappear. Great restoration
Thank you!
Wow, you are a miracle worker. You have brought that old box back to its former glory. It's good enough for Antiques Roadshow.
Thank you!
Another classic piece of work including the filming. Thanks. The traditional French polish pad with shellac, pumice, and a couple of drops of oil really works nicely for filling grain. The pumice makes dust that falls into the grain, and the shellac instantly coats it. I've used this a few times. It does take some practice, but the result is gorgeous.
Thanks! I've always read about that, this would have been a good one to try it out. I will sometime!
Therapeutic for me love it. Thanks for the good videos.
You're welcome!
Thank you for continuing to share your work and decades of experience. 😊 As always excellent capture of detail & process. 👏👏👏
(And suspect if furniture restoration were a social media 'thing' you and your channel would be the king. 😁)
Thanks! That's nice!
In order to do what you are doing, knowledge and experience is very important. Another thing that I found that is as important is patient. You cannot rush thing otherwise can blow everything up. Good work Thomas 😊
Yes! So true, as I like to say: sometimes the fastest way to get something done is to take your time
What a wonderful repair to such a beautiful sewing box. I have been watching for the next episode of this and wondered if you snuck off fishing for a few hours.
I have been viewing your other wonderful videos our the last few weeks. What treasures you can find in barns. I'm originally from Rhode Island. Spent many happy days in Maine and our family summer house in New Hampshire.
I now live in Newport, Shropshire, England. It seems not many like "brown " or dark wood antiques so I have many lovely dark oak antiques to finish our home. I was raised in a house chock full of lovely old antiques and have many fond memories of Saturday polishing chores.
Thanks for sharing your videos.,
Take care and have a nice day
Ann Talbot
Thanks Ann! I appreciate you watching. And I'm glad I could help stir those memories!
It turned out beautiful.
Thank you!
Beautiful and such an improvement!
Thank you so much!
Outstanding job Tom
Thank you!
Thank you. I always learn something from your videos
Thanks!
Simply superb workmanship,again.👌👍💕
Thank you!
Insane amount of patience required and expressed. I’ve had a couple projects like this where it seemed hopeless b/c for every little bit you stick down another spot comes loose- a never ending wild goose chase. Great job as always I would have bagged it long ago.
Thanks! You are right! The pieces that seem fine start loosening up as you work! It's maddening sometimes
Shellac sticks, something new for me, but it did a fantastic job. So satisfying to watch you work, it always looks much better than pretty good.
Thanks!
Beautiful job Tom!!!
Thank you very much!
Beyond a doubt, it does look 'pretty good''; Which at your place is spectacular!
Thanks
You're welcome!
Yet another fantastic job well done! 👏
Thank you so much! 😀
This ended up swell! what a nice box.
Thanks! Yes, I liked this one
Beautifully restored as usual. Thanks
You're welcome!
As always, it does look “pretty good”. What patience! It must sometimes be challenging to manage customer expectations and deciding when enough is enough. I guess as long as seasons change, the wood will continue to move.
Thanks! Yes, hopefully exceed those expectations! And yes, the problems are likely to resurface
@@johnsonrestoration just out of curiosity, would removing the veneer on that panel and scraping the mismatched timber down have solved the issue?
Not that i expect it would have been the most worthwhile thing to do, haha. Just curious! When i'm mending clothing or other things i have to fight the urge to take the piece apart entirely, straighten it up, and put it back together better than before. In fact, while watching this video, i am reassembling a cushion cover that i definitely didn't need to disassemble to mend 😂
What could be more relaxing than to see you working on this box whith such great calmness and never ceasing patience. Thank you!
You're welcome! It takes patience to watch it!
You're right about the builder being a good craftsman. He would be proud of your restoration.
I'd like to think he would! A feeling of connection
I am also proud of his skill. He was not a craftsman by profesion, but he was very, very good.
Beautiful.
Thank you!
It’s beautiful Thomas, greetings from England x
Thank you! And Greetings to you as well!
With every video of yours I marvel at your craftsmanship and patience, and feel happy to see loved objects returned to their beautiful state. Truly, an antidote to the frantic pace of the world.
Thank you very much!
Super; great timing Tom. Love that jewelry box...cheers...rr
Thanks!
A beautiful box! If only you and the maker of the box could sit and chat about the wonderful work you both have done. Two timeless craftsmen. Thank you for sharing your passion.
You're welcome! I like to think we communicated a bit through my work! I can feel it anyway
Looks wonderful, thank you.
You're welcome!
I think it looks pretty good too. 😎
Thanks for the inspiration.
You’re welcome 😊
yes again, a master and a ledgend. 😯
Thanks! (A legend in his own mind!)
Let's take a moment to apretiate the superb craftmanship of Mr. William King, innmaster by profesion but a master of the craft in his own right. We can only speculate if he had been a profesional woodworker before being innmaster, or if his skills were just a hobby. In any case, he built a marketry sewing box as good as any, better than some, works made by people that HAVE the craft as their actual profesion!
Yes! Good point! Let's hear it for William King!
That beautiful box would be a fabulous place to keep one's weed! Well done, Thomas!
Definitely! I would hate for any odor to get into the paper lining etc. But you would definitely impress your friends!
Masterful restoration! Very very nice. Best wishes.
Thanks!
Bumble bee doing his chores. Ella snoozing. Orion looking suspiciously. The box restored to live on for millennia. Craftsmanship exemplified. Wow! Thanks Tom.
You're welcome!
Beautiful restoration ♥️
Thank you very much!
What pleasure you give to witness your gentle skills, Tom.
Thanks Phil, that's nice
Masterfull. I love to see the addition of your clients comment, expectations, or some narration of your decision process with the clients.
Thanks!
This type of work requires infinite patience and attention to detail, both of which you have in abundance. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
You're welcome!
It looks superb. What a labour of love.
Many thanks!
Been watching a fairly long while, learn several things each time I watch. My favorite portion is when you use the same tool I do or a material others seem to forget, you know like the Famowood. That one little wooden handle screwdriver, I would almost swear it is mine! Of course it looks pretty good, the best there is did it. I feel pretty confident judging that because I began making sawdust nearly 68 years ago.
Thanks! I know exactly what you mean. We probably share a lot of similarly aged tools, I like that
It came out great as always Tom, it’s so awesome to think of the generations of craftsmen that have repaired certain pieces over the decades. I’m sure William King appreciates his work being kept alive.
Thanks! I think about that too, I hope he would like the job!
First-rate craftsmanship as always. Such a pleasure to watch you lovingly and skillfully care for this piece.
Thank you!
Dear Mr. Johnson, your knowledge and problem-solving has brought me a big step forward in my hobby, furniture restoration, with every video. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Greetings from Hesse, Germany.
You're welcome! I am so glad I can help people through these videos
Lovely repair of box with an interesting bit of history
Thanks! It does make it more interesting
Amazing restoration.
Thank you!
The incredible amount of detailed work you did is amazing. It looks beautiful!
Thank you so much!
Wow, the second part lived up to my hopes! Amazing workmanship!! I can’t wait for your next video.
Thanks!
You have nailed it yet again, Tom... Exquisite skill; very beauitiful piece; dear faithful Ella; I have adored Chickens since childhood; and another glimpse of your perfectly restored home... doesn't get any better than that. Well done, Tom! ...Barry
Thanks Barry! You are so nice
Your experience gained from your father and over time really paid off. That was a beautiful ending.
Thanks Liz!
I have watched just about all your videos. I am always impressed by your work. This week I again saw you use that VERY sharp 1" chisel to do some fine work on the top. You must re-sharpen that one every week. In your hands, it's a precision instrument! By the way, our eight chicks are grown and we are adding them to the old flock with the rooster this weekend. Very soon they should be laying and we can have return to having eggs for breakfast. All the best - Bart
Thanks! Our chicks are in the hen house too - they're adjusting fine! We're getting plenty of eggs from the others
I love your videos- you are so knowledgeable and have such a lovely way of delivering the information. Thank you. Wendi Schofield, UK.
You are so welcome!
A master at work! It is always amazing to see your attention to detail!
Thank you for sharing your craft!!
You're welcome!
You make it look so easy 😮😊
Thanks! It's just experience. It's never easy!
Hi Tom!! Great job like always. Greetings from Galveston, Texas.
Thanks Rosalinda!
Masterpiece !
Thanks!
Well Tom here is a testament to your video's talent, I leaned forward to adjust the mouse on my computer, and then realized all most at the end of the video, that I had not leaned back into my chair to relax and watch it!!. it was so engrossing it held me up! literally. It was my aching back that gave me the clue to what had just happened.!. Veneer work is like watching a fuse on a stick of explosives, you keep waiting for it to go pop ! and a way bigger piece than you wanted comes loose. Such intense mystery, a drama and expertise well worth watching. Thank you so much for another great video. both on your craftsmanship and your video critique's. Like fine wine, they just get better with age. ! God Speed ECF.
Thank you Ellis! That is so nice - and gratifying to me as Nick (my editor) and I are really trying to do quality videos. I really like that you were literally on the edge of your seat!
Watching you do this restoration makes one realize the work that went into making it in the first place. The original artist really was an artist to make such a lovely picture I have a little pieces of wood and I think the box itself is almost 150 years old!! Thank you for sharing and enabling us to watch you do such beautiful work.
Thanks! Yes, people are marveling at the repair, forgetting what it took to create it!
What a cracking job, Thomas! Beautifully restored as always, but what patience you show us with all your masterpieces.
Thank you!
Love the way this came out. I appreciate your videos. Excellent sequel...much better then the sequels the movie studios put out.
Couldn't agree more! Thanks! Even if I like a movie, I won't watch a sequel. I'd rather watch the first one over again
It's so satisfying to see you make those repairs simply disappear. It's interesting to hear that it was 16 hours of work that you make look effortless.
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Excellent video as always.
Thank you!
Nicely done!
Thanks!
Well Thomas ... as usual, WOW! Bravo, just the TLC that box needed.
Thanks!
“I know it looks very good.” You would never say that but we can say it for you. Well done and thanks for making this video.
You're welcome!
Stunning job
Thank you!
🙋♀️Patience is a virtue, and your work is the best example I've ever seen! Exquisite!
Thanks!
Your work is amasing. I am loving the sound of the little chickens in the background .sounds like they are doing well .you have a lovely heart .it is obvious in your nature images you show us that you love your animals and all life .thankyou .
