- In this video I will be restoring a Genuine Antique Bobbin chair from the 19th Century. I'll be trying some new restoration techniques that I've never done before and showing you some mistakes i made along the way. This restoration challenged my patience a number of times but i love the final results and I hope you do too.

If you're going to repair and renovate old furniture BIG TIP nails and screws that have been in the wood a long time form a bond. To remove them EASY place an electric soldering iron on the head it expands them and breaks the bond. When they cool its really easy to pull nails or unscrew screws NICE VID
Thanks very much for the tip, I’ll give that a try 😀😀👍
Hi David, here is a tip for you regarding horsehair: make yourself a couple of hand carding tools like the ones used for wool. Make them the shape - but a bit larger- than your webbing stretcher and fix the nails so it looks like two hair brushes. It won't be the last time you have to reuse old horsehair, and next time it will take you a lot shorter time to loosen the stuffing after washing it.
Oh, and one more thing; in order to keep a happy marriage, if you keep washing 150 year old horse hair in the washing machine you might want to clean out the little sive at the bottom of the machine once in a while (at least, we have that solution on the washing machines here in Norway) so that your wife does'nt go totally librarian on you, as Sir Terry Pratchett would have said! :)
Brilliant result as always by the way! xxx to you both and Daisy from Mette in Kongsberg, Norway:)
Hi Mette. You know what, after I separated the horsehair by hand I stood there and thought I should have made something to make that easier! Thanks so much for the tip on carding tools, I’ll have a look and make some 😀👍 I’ll double check the washing machine filter too before Emma dies 🤣🤣🤣❤️
@@MayfieldRestorations hehehe, I reckon that's a good idea:)
Absolutely gorgeous! I love both pieces, but the work and skill it took to breathe life back into the chair was a true labour of love. Well done - great work and a joy to watch you and Daisy.
Thanks Jennifer. That’s lovely of you to say 😀❤️
I talk out loud to myself as well when working on a project. I think it helps me process my decisions. Great job, love the videos!
Glad it’s not just me 😂😂
You sir are a true Master Craftsman. Your patience and perseverance is second to none. BTW, Daisy loves her corks like humans like chewing gum. It is better than chewing on a stick that could damage her teeth. Cheers!
Wow. What a great comment thanks Sue. She loves her corks but I always have to vacuum after she leaves cork debris everywhere 🤣🤣🐶❤️
Hear, hear
Once more you prove your worth as a skilful craftsman with true artistic flair. Much as I respect your idea of keeping the horsehair, I would NOT have allowed it in my washing machine. Respect to you wife for allowing that. Every time that I see gorgeous, happy, lively Daisy, my face breaks into a big smile. Wish she was mine.
Hi Pamela. My wife wasn’t ecstatic with me using the washer but she’s a love and agreed. Thanks so much for your lovely comments about Daisy, she’s a little gem 😀😀
Oh wow. That is beautiful. I love the choice of material. The weaving looked fantastic.Well done 🙏❣️
Thanks so much Teresa 😀😀
Outstanding job. Love how the caning turned out --- no one would ever know it had been repaired!
That cane work was amazing! The end result is stunning! WTG!
Cheers Tom 😀😀👍
They look like they belong to each other. I enjoyed every minute of this video. Justso happens a friend of mine is recovering some chairs i am sharing this video with her
Thanks so much for your lovely comments Roberta 😀❤️
It's absolutely amazing! I love the fabric choice and I'm glad you decided to re-weave the back!
Thank you Scarlet !😊
Yup, you did it again. I don't know how you part with any of the pieces. All so beautiful.
Hahaha thanks Maggie, I certainly didn’t part with these. They are in pride of place in my house 😀😀❤️
Upholstering is not for the faint of heart - it is hard work, but very rewarding.
I totally agree, it’s an art but really satisfying 😀😀
The cane repair is so good! I'm so glad you chose to do a repair instead of ripping out the hand woven caning. Love the fabric and the nailhead trim. Great job.
Thanks so much 😀😀
You’ve done an amazing job and it’s now a beautiful chair. Bonus points for your patience and skill on the reeding and also for dealing with that terrible horsehair! I hope you kept the needlework from the footstool-it was beautiful.
And…thanks for our dose of darlin’ Daisy and her corks. 🥰 You are becoming one of my favorite channels.
What a lovely comment and Thankyou for your continued support. I have kept the needlepoint upholstery and hope to use it for something in the future 😀🐶❤️
I’m one of your new subscribers. I’m blown away by the results of this project-you did an amazing job bringing this piece back! ❤
Hi Sandy, welcome to my channel and thanks for your sub. Your comments are very kind, Thankyou 😀😀
Amazing job as always! I admire your patience with the reed. It must be super satisfying to complete something that was so difficult! You did a great job matching the stain on both pieces and the upholstery looks fantastic! The new upholstery on the chair is absolutely light years better than what was on there previously too! Daisy's appearance is the best! Such great content! Thanks for sharing all your hard work! It's made my Sunday much nicer!😊🐕
Wow Jennifer, what a lovely comment and I really appreciate your support. Daisy says hi 😀🐶❤️
I love the rattan repair you did. You can't really tell where you repaired unless you're looking for it. The little footstool looks like it belongs with the chair. Great job!!
Thanks so much 😀😀
Beautiful job, perfect! I am so happy when Daisy makes her appearance, love her.
Hi Patricia. Thanks so much 😀🐶❤️
Wonderful job, I love the fact that you problem solve and show mistakes so we can enjoy the process, just fab, can’t wait for next piece! 😃
Thanks so much and I’m so pleased you enjoy my videos 😀😀
Upholstery and caning......two VERY difficult restoration endeavors! BRAVO!!!! Beautiful chair! Happy your channel is growing! 👍👏✨😍❤
I have a huge respect for the experts at caning and upholstery. It’s not easy at all so I just did my best 😀😀👍👍
What a beautiful restoration! I’m so glad you were able to revitalize the old horse hair stuffing and huge kudos for patching the old caning. Rich finish, beautiful fabric and detail, lovely coordinating footstool, and a new lease for a period piece. Great job! 👍
Thanks so much Chris, that’s really kind of you to say 😀👍
Came out GORGEOUS! You deserve a huge round of applause 👏 The reed backing came out fantastic, worth the time you spent on it.👏👏👏
Hi Megan, Thanks so much! 😊
You pulled out all the stops on this transformation, and it shows. I had to grit my teeth watching you re-weave the rattan caning; it looked like trying to remedy ancient embroidery with new stitches. Again, your attention to detail made the day. (I made all most of my own clothes for almost 30 years, so I know about detail and dexterity.) The fabric choice is perfect for the style of the chair and footstool - it's just lovely. And thank you, of course, for our "Dose of Daisy." She's a charmer with her floppy, curly ears. I'm glad that you're seeing increased interest in your channel after the dueling projects with Jay. You'll hit 20,000 in no time. Thanks for the visit to your shop. Cheers from Oklahoma!!!
Hi Maribob. The weaving part of the restoration was definitely the most challenging but I’m really glad I did it rather than leaving it as it was. So pleased you like the fabric as I wasn’t sure how well it would be received although I love it. Daisy is actually going for a haircut tomorrow so she’ll be looking posh in the next video. Thanks for your continued support 😀🐶❤️
Both pieces turned out lovely and they go together quite well, almost as if they were meant to be together. That fabric absolutely makes the look even more special!
Thank you! 😊😀😀
Good enough for a home show piece. Love the finish preservation keeping it's vintage look. The stool does compliment the chair.
Thanks very much 😀😀
The fabric you've chosen is so beautiful! You are totaly right to keep this chair for your own home. The final result is really wonderful!
Thanks Carla, I love it and I’m so happy to actually own a genuine antique. 😀😀😀
Magnificent restorations, they are beautiful. I have refinished furniture for over 50 years and I know how frustrating and at the same time so worthwhile. Now I’m 85 and no longer do this work.
Hi Patricia and thank you so much for your lovely comment which means a great deal coming from somebody that has refinished furniture for half a century. I love what I do and wish I'd found my passion for this much earlier on. 😀😀
I’m so glad you didn’t replace the original rattan. The repair job you did was well worth the seven hours it took. Great explanation of how to fix the seating as well.
💕
Thanks Paula 😀😀
I think you did an amazing job of repairing the rattan!
You’re very kind, thanks 😀
PERFECTIONISTS PATIENCE = PARADISE! 😊
Hi Debbe. What a great comment, thanks so much 😀😀❤️
Wow!! You're the epitome of patience. I'm not sure I could've done it 😂 well done!
Hi Tracy. This definitely tested my patience but I’m quite a determined person so it wasn’t beating me 😂😂😀👍
Those two look very friendly to each other, you've got the tones in tune there for a lovely pair in your home. Smiles from wifey no doubt 🎉❤
Hi Moana. My wife loves them and I think I made up for washing the horsehair in our washing machine 😂😂👍
Thanks for an amazing video David. Such an enjoyable watch. I couldn't be more impressed with the end results, they look so good together.
Look forward to seeing your next video. For me, the length was great - don't worry about it being too long. It's fun to watch your progress. Take care.
Hi Colin. Thanks so much and hope you didn’t mind me mentioning you in the video. 😀👍
@@MayfieldRestorations No not at all. I really enjoyed the reveal. You've done a superb job on the chair and stool. I'm quite chuffed you're keeping them too. I checked out Jay's channel - it's good too and I enjoy watching his work too. Take care mate.
Very lovely and the horse hair really fluffed up nicely in the wash.
Thank you! 😊
Such beautiful work to place in a beautiful home. You are a master at restoration and you do incredible work each time. I hope you fill your home with restorations for generations to enjoy 😊
Daisy is so lovely my two fur babies wait patiently to see her on your videos.
The chair is incredible. You did an amazing job once again. ❤
I absolutely love it and I’ve never owned a genuine antique before. I have a beautiful Solid Tiger Oak desk that you may have seen a glimpse of at the start of the video. I’ve got my name on that too 🤣🤣😀❤️
Incredible job! The fabric you chose was perfect. I wouldn’t change a thing. Love that you kept the original horse hair.
Thank you so much Pat 😀😀
Love it.
tell us about the amount of staples needing removing..............then proceed to put 12 staples in each end of the webbing 😄
I know but what’s a man to do 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤣🤣
I really appreciate you leaving many of the original dings and scratches in the final piece. It shows its age and restoration history. Excellent as always. And though not a dog lover as per se', Daisy is adorable! I'm a cat person, like your drawer flipping buddy! :)
😀🐶🐈❤️
Oh my goodness, it's beautiful! Love the fabric an the weaving is very good. Can't tell the old from the new! I've tried weaving and it's no joke for sure! The foot stool looks really good with the chair. You did a fabulous job on both pieces. They'll be beautiful in your home for many years! Very impressive and your hard work paid off in the end! 😊
Thanks so much Pam. It was a challenge but I really enjoyed it 😀😀
Absolutely beautiful restoration. Well done Sir! Your basket weaving was spot on. As well as the staining. You’re keeping a real treasure. The Upolstery fabric was lovely.
Thank you very much Shirley 😀😀
A very fine, beautiful job! Lot's of tedious work, but well worth it. I LOVE that upholstery material. ❤️🐕
Hi Gail. Thanks so much. I love that material too. It’s got like a velvet feel to it 😀❤️
Oh, Martin that turned out just perfect! Looks like you achieved all your goals! They will look lovely in your home.
Martin?
😀👍
It turned out beautiful! You do have patience though. I don’t think I could have persevered. Aww Daisy 💗💗 Can’t wait to see the neighbors dog. We love our Penny Lane. 😊
Thank you Barbara, it definitely tried my patience 😂😊 Little Mabel is really cute so hopefully I’ll get her to make a guest appearance in the next video 😀🐶❤️
Beautiful chair. Your fabric choice is exquisite. ♥️
I went down a rabbit hole with the initials of JF and I think I have a lead for you (or not). Anyway, I found the name JF Johnson who designed furniture for the London manufacturer, Heal & Sons. There is a chair in the Victoria and Albert Museum with a similar cane back - exposed tacks around it (It’s not a bobbin chair). I could be way off but since my background is in research this was fun.
Wow, thanks so much Marti for taking the time to look into this. You’ve given me a lead to have a look at now. I love to know the history of a piece if I find a makers mark. Thanks again 😀😀👍👍
You just repaired caning! Yay! Just like repairing wicker - tedious work but worth it.
Hi Rhonda, I know right 😀😀 it was a pain to do but really glad I attempted it 😀❤️
This is very nice! You didn’t overdo on the repairs. Old furniture shouldn’t lose it’s charm and character. Lovely.
Thanks 😀
Hi from the middle of California....this is a BEAUTIFUL renovation. Well, well done, and thank you for sharing!!
Hi Kay. Thanks so much for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed it 😀😀
I loved seeing the horsehair! Truly beautiful piece.
Thanks Molly 😀😀
Very impressive! I love your choice of bright fabric for this dark seat.
Thank you! 😊
A beautifully finished sympathetic restoration. I'm glad you kept the bumps & wear marks that a piece with history behind it would have. I have a bobbin bed & 2 barley twist pieces that I absolutely love. A+ on the cane weaving... you have the patience of a saint 🥰 cheers
Hi Pat, thank you so much. I love barley twist pieces too, it shows great craftsmanship and is so interesting. 😀😀❤️
Wow David you have excelled your self, all your work is awesome but was this restoration was phenomenal. The fabric was beautiful and showed your artistic flair off really well, amazing work. Glad to see Daisy supervising as usual.
Hi Freyja. You always leave such lovely comments and I really appreciate it. So pleased you enjoyed this video, it was a tough job but I love the chair now it’s finished. Thanks for your continued support 😀🐶❤️
Goodness me…what a beautiful restoration!! Your perseverance and determination paid off. Wonderful, wonderful job!!
Thank you so much Nancy 😀
The reeding repair amazed me truly! So perfect! I’ve never tried upholstery projects. But looking at your work, I’m inspired
Hi Alla, have a go at it. I’m not brilliant at upholstery but it’s really enjoyable although the reeding work was a little challenging 😂😂😀❤️
I’ve seen the finished piece and I couldn’t see where you repaired it. Amazing job
Thanks Mum ❤️❤️
💜💜💜Loved everything about this video. Hugs to Daisy!
Hi Anita. Thanks for your support as always 😀❤️
Had no idea horse hair stuffing could be laundered. Great job!
😀👍
I loved the fabric choice. The whole video was fascinating thank you!
Hi Linda, Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much 😀😀
What a masterpiece I like to zoom at the nail and staple removal it's so satisfying to watch . The fabric is pretty great job
Thank you so much! 😀😀
Wow! Both pieces turned out beautifully. And I am immensely impressed by your cane repair. I didn't think it looked too bad as it was, but your repair really made a big difference. I love that you kept as much original as you could. Great job!
Thank you so much Doris 😀😀
Oh my goodness that is beautiful!!! And your "basket weaving" was perfect! You are truly amazing at what you do! Always look forward to your videos and of course Daisy too.
Hi Sherri. What lovely comments, thanks so much ❤🐶
Very beautiful French chair well restored. Bravo. C’est très bien ❤
Merci Beaucoup 😀
David, you have the patience of a Saint..I would have thrown in the towel at the removal of the old fabric..lol turned out magnificent..big hug to Daisy, can't wait to see neighbors little dog. Thanks for the entertaining video!!
Hi Kim, it certainly tried my patience at times but I was glad I persevered. You’ll love Mabel, she’s so cute and very cheeky. I’ve already told my neighbours I’d like to feature her in a future video and they are happy for her to make a guest appearance 😂🐶❤️
@@MayfieldRestorations can't wait to see Mabel ..glad you did persevere as it turned out gorgeous!
Oh David, I knew you would do a remarkable job on that caning, and you did it!!! I'm just sorry that it took so long, and tested your patience. I love how you try to keep the pieces you work on as true to the time period as you can. The dings and dents look appropriate. I truly enjoyed every minute of this video, and I didn't mind that it was a bit longer than usual. In fact, the more the merrier!! Outstanding restoration.....as always!!!! I can't wait for the next video!
Hi Karen, what a lovely comment thank you and thanks so much for appreciating the way I chose to restore this chair. It’s lovely to have such nice supporters of my work 😀❤️
I love your choice of upholstery fabric! The results for the chair and the footstool are outstanding! It looks really good with the wood tones!
Thanks so much Laura 😀😀
Love Daisy!
Thanks Toni 😀🐶❤️
That is stunning! What a brilliant addition to your home. I appreciate your creative solutions to the “tack & staple” difficulties. The way the pattern on the chair seat kind of flows onto the foot stool is wonderful!
Thanks so much! 😊❤️
Very handsome chair, and stool. Enjoyed seeing the restoration process.
Thank you very much! 😀😀
That cane woven repairs was so worth the time and sanity to do. My grandpa didn’t manage to teach me how to do that in his time.
He did manage to teach me the basics in upholstery and if I were you I wouldn’t worry about tack holes. Some chairs I’ve seen are nearly sieves. The other handy skill my grandpa taught me was French polishing. I have done a burr walnut veneered small table and when finished it looked as if there was a sheet of glass on it. I was so happy with it. It looked beautiful
Keep up with your hard work as I find your channel probably the best on here.
I love hearing about the things your Grandpa taught you. Grandads are the best!!! I’ve tried “proper” French polishing on another piece and I was rubbish at it but I know with practice I’d get better. Although my grandad was a true inspiration to me he never actually taught me any specific skills, I’ve never had any formal training in what I do, I just have a go at pretty much anything and try to get better as I go. Thanks for your kind comments about my work. 😀❤️
Beautiful! From the amazing wicker repair to the refinishing to the fabric choice - just gorgeous ❤
Thanks so much Rita 😀❤️
You did a really nice job of piecing the cane work together. Good on ya for tackling it.
Thanks Joseph 😀👍
I absolutely love the fabric and end result!
Thank you so much!😀😀
Well done David and Daisy. Love how you handled the edges with the blue ribbon before applying the tack strip. I wouldn't have been able prevent myself from re-reeding the back panel completely before colouring down, always good to develope a new skill if time isn't an issue.
👏👏👍
Thanks Michael. I won’t be in a rush to do caning repair again though 😂😂
I didn’t think it was a good idea to patch fix the reeding but you were right- it’s actually a big improvement. The whole thing looks great.
Thanks Julie 😀
Oh my, the fabric is gorgeous! Also it did help tying those two pieces together quite a bit.
Thanks very much 😀😀
I learned a lot from this video. Lots of work! Looks lovely.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much 😀😀
The caning was spectacular! Wgat a superb job. No wonder you and Jay are such good buddies. You both are superb artisans.
Thanks so much 😀😀
That reed work was definitely a labour of love, the difference is outstanding. 7 hours well spent!
Thanks very, it didn't seem like a good idea at the time though 🤣🤣
You talk to yourself because sometimes you need expert advice! 😂 I’ve been known to process my thoughts out loud, too. It’s only a worry if you start to argue, LOL. 😉
The reedwork came out beautifully. I can’t believe it’s your first try at it, and I was not surprised at all when you pulled out the wood markers. It seemed like a good idea, and blended in very well with the old work. I love the blue ribbon!
Hahaha thanks Shirley. I think I talk to myself because I’m in my own so much it’s either that or talk to Daisy when she’s there. 🤣🤣. The reed work was a pain but I was happy with the end result 😀😀
Wow just wow you took on some VERY difficult things there and pulled them off beautifully ❤
As I said in the live even Trena from John's furniture repair gets someone else to do the rattan type work so you are mega in my view 😊 Also her latest video is 1hr 14 mins and I love watching them that long Thomas Johnson does them that long too.
20k is yours 😁👍
Aww Thankyou so much. That is a huge compliment and I’ve been watching Trena and Tom for a while now and have learned so much from them. Thanks for your great support, I really do appreciate it 😀🐶❤️
Outstanding transformation, the chair has such character you brought it back to life 🙌🙌🙌. You did a great job on repairing the weave, that was a tough one but well worth the effort. The foot stool looks like it really belongs with the chair. ❤️
Thanks so much! 😊❤️
Your welcome, 🤓❤
Nice the way you left those wear patterns on the arms. Looks nice. Like the upholstery, works well with the chair. 👍🏻
Thanks very much 😀👍
I am astounded at the work you put into that chair! That crazy weaving! But you did wonderfully on it. And that huge pile of horsehair!!! Daisy is so cute with her chewing fetish....LOL I look forward to meeting Mable.
Thanks for your kind comment. You’ll love Mabel, she’s so cute and is Daisys buddy. 😀🐶❤️
What a lovely job you have done!!! I adore that fabric!! So elegant yet alive with color. I would want to rope that off so no one could sit on it!!! The tacks on the edges really add to the look!
Thank you so much! I must admit that the chair will rarely get sat in in our house too. 😂😂❤️
Another lovely result, definitely worth the time spent on the rattan. You certainly have some very nice generous subscribers
Hi Buddy, hope you’re well. 😀👍👍
Beautiful I love the fabric you choose. And thumbs up for the caning.
Thanks so much Joann 😀😀
I love the chair. And even though the footstool is not an exact match, in the end, they make a splendid set! You did a beautiful job restoring them both.
Thank you! 😊
Howdy Maestro!! You've made that chair into a throne befitting any king! You're the king of your castle & now you have a seat of authority to show for it!!! BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you kindly 😀😀
Beautiful restoration. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you work. The video was not too long.
Thanks Sibylle 😀😀
Bravo on the weaving!
Thanks so much, it was hard going but I’m glad I went for it 😀😀👍👍
I always look forward to your videos. They never disappoint.
Aww thanks so much Chanda and thanks for your continued support 😀❤️
Your caning looks good. I'm glad to see that you did not put a strip of trim fabric over the wood on the uprights. Enjoyable video.
Thanks Louis 😀😀👍
Wonderful job! The fabric really brought it to life. All your hard work too, of course. Well done!
Thank you so much and I’m glad you liked my choice of fabric 😀😀
Stunning. So many of your skills went into this one! The reed work was stellar! I love the fabric.
So pleased you liked the fabric. I’m not sure everyone will but I love it 😀😀
I am always so impressed with your lovely work, but the hand caning STUNNED me. What a great job! Consider changing your name to Job.
You’re so very kind. Thanks so much 😀😀😀
My "will I subscribe to this channel" moment was whether or not you'd do your own weaving. I just taught myself how last year and it was so satisfying - I'm glad you went that route, too. Cheers! I hope you'll try doing one from scratch, it'll make you feel like a rock star. Looking forward to your adventures, they help me keep motivated for my own.
Thanks for your sub and taking the time to comment 😀👍
This is an awesome set now!
Thanks, I love it and its pride of place in our house now 😀👍
this is just lovely! i love the contrast with the dark wood and bright print. amazing job on the back!!!!
Thank you so much! 😀😀
Amazing how compacted the horse hair was.
😀😀
Looks fantastic, love the choice of fabric. Looked like a lot of work but I’m sure you are delighted with the result 👍
Thanks very much. I love the chair 😀😀
