To be fair, a laptop comes with an entire functioning system out of the box. A desktop computer will cost more money with all of the parts together, if you're getting high end parts. The peripherals also don't come with it so that's an extra cost. With that in mind, laptops also need to be engineered to fit powerful hardware in a small, thin, portable form factor, and naturally that's going to cost more money. You also can't have anywhere near as much power flowing through a laptop cause it's too thin to keep cool. As far as laptops go, the 4090 mobile is a monster of a chip and its a technological marvel. Prices also vary hugely. You can find some 4090 laptops for just shy of 3 grand. If you're living in a car or driving a truck for a living, and a laptop is the only option you have, I'd say it's well worth the money. If you can get a desktop obviously go with that. But not all of us have that luxury
NVIDIA have subtlety change back to relative performance naming instead of good old desktop name + maxP/Q, since AMD is even less competitive in mobile GPU, NVIDIA can just do whatever they want.
Okay I do AI work, and of course I game, and travel a lot, therefore need a powerful laptop wherever I go. With the exception of the AI work, in what universe is AMD not competitive in laptops especially when you consider the price? If I didn't have to do AI work, I would only look at AMD laptops, since they produce the same frame rate for less power at a cheaper price while still having the same quality system. Both the CPU and the GPU are less power hungry for the equivalent amount of work, with the exception of anything AI or tensor core based like for example DLSS. In fact I'm much prefer the one I got my girlfriend which is fully AMD based using a 6800 mobile GPU on last gen's CPUs... And that laptop has a better screen, better keyboard, with the exception of thunderbolt missing, better IO and I actually enjoy it better in games for example it never crashes on certain games because of too little video memory. And I paid less to buy it for my girlfriend than the one I have for myself. Which let's face it is a 3080 impersonating as a 3090.. in fact I love my 3070 Asus laptop, except for that 8 gigs of memory but it also can't do the work I need to do. AMD absolutely has competitive and better than, laptop GPUs, though I agree you have to wait a little longer because OEMs are taking their time bringing them out, they're trying to sell their overly expensive Nvidia based laptops. I actually regret getting that 3070 laptop not because it isn't a great laptop, but because the graphics card is already unable to do things that I want it to do never mind my work... For the same price I got the 6800 based laptop for my girlfriend with better overall specs. Just wait a month or two and that will be plenty of AMD base laptops in the same performance category, though you might not be able to get a good quality into CPU paired with the high end AMD GPU, and while I think AMD has done a fantastic job in power efficiency, for certain workloads the Intel CPU is still better, having said that for gaming; I don't think you'll see a difference between the high end of Intel or AMD, it will be the GPUs and the workload you need to put them through that will matter
Hello Jarrod ! I have to say you are the best laptop reviewer on UA-cam, and I watch most of your videos and I appreciate the amount of work you put into them. I bought a Legion 5 based on your reviews. I don't know if you know about Dota 2 but it's a very popular eSports game which requires a lot of CPU power in order to deliver high framerates as it's based on Source 2 Engine. It would be really really nice and I think a lot of people would be interested in this .Could you consider including this title in your tests? Thank you !
Scar 16 4090 at $3700 really closes the price gap with the Desktop I think and still maintains pretty close performance to the Titan. I wonder what the price delta between the two systems would be if the desktop includes a mini-led monitor like some 4090 laptops do?
Idk why people are surprised. This was always the case for GPUS between laptops and their desktop counterparts. I think this was also the case for the 20 series where the desktop RTX 2060 was equivalent to a 2070 on the laptop. The problem of putting enough cooling and power into a cutdown GPU that's confined in a laptop space has still not been resolved, nor do I see it being resolved for a long time. Its always power efficiency and smaller form-factor vs raw power and better cooling. Can't have both yet.
Is the ASUS rog scar 18 with the 4090 mobile worth it? Or should I wait for the next gen 5000 series, and maybe we can expect actual 4090 performance in the future from the laptops
The RTX 4080 Mobile is about a desktop RTX 3080 in terms of performance, we also know the RTX 4070 is about the same speed as the RTX 3080, So we can safely assume the 4090 Laptop is about a desktop RTX 4070 ti equivalent.
it's faster than a 3090ti desktop. I own both a 4090 legion 7i and a 3090ti desktop and there's not one game in 4k where the laptop loses. I have a 200/400 overclock though
Again very good review, thanks for the good job) last year I've chosen my new laptop regarding your reviews, and last year still it was advantegous to have a gaming laptop as desktop graphics cards were not easy to find. And now availability changed and it is time to go back to desktop
Thanks for the comparison! This is very misleading indeed. This also shows that, had Nvidia named the mobile version correctly we'd have much smaller difference in performance between a laptop and desktop versions due to the laptop version being much more power efficient.
If 4090 Laptop = 4080 Desktop then the laptop using people are actually winning because having a 4080 (or little below a 4080) in a laptop is fantastic, considering the form factor and the energy consumption. I really think getting a desktop 4090 is impossible. Having a 4080 desktop in a laptop is at least amazing.
I think the XMG NEO would have been a better choice for comparison, since it can run with watercooling and can be OC'd safely and stay stable even with clock speeds of 2600 MHz.
@@JacobSmith-rd8hl why, if the 4080 is running with 2.6 Ghz? Imo it would be fairer, just to see how the same die performs with the same speeds. And while OCing in my testing, the 4080 was only 15% ahead.
Thank you again. While I'm not going to spend that kind of money, I do think this will ultimately effect the discounted price of lower end gaming laptops. If I were building a mid-range PC though, I think I would go all AMD. It's a shame there aren't more all AMD laptops, as that would be more competition.

hi, I'm wondering between Alienware x15 r1 and Legion 5i pro 2022 when they both use rtx 3070. Can you compare these 2 machines because in my opinion they are quite similar.
Very insightful. I'm debating either a laptop or a desktop which the latter could be cheaper in terms of performance. Can you recommend how I can build the cheapest PC with a RTX 4080 GPU?
Hey Jarrod, I really enjoy your content! So, I have a question: Are you planning to do a comparison of the 4090 vs. 4080 vs. 4070 vs. 4060 on the XMG NEO 16 platform ? Also, will there be a bigger NEO 16 Review coming any time soon ? Thanks (:
I am seeing a lot of people on reddit raving about turning of the E cores in 13th gen intel chips when gaming. It increases average and 1% frames pretty consistently.
Nvidia should really return to naming the products after the chip. "Everyone" will know a mobile chip will perform less than a desktop chip (because of cooling/power limits) but being consistent on naming will help the consumers long-term in knowing what they are really buying.
also its not only about naming, the naming also dictates the pricing. This 4090M is getting sold at above 3080ti prices. It performs like a 4070ti or slightly less, yet it has the same pricepoint as a 4090 desktop which is like 50% faster.
Please test the different laptop CPU options against each other! Especially considering the possibly worse performance of the i9 HX processors. Thanks again for the excellent reviews Jarrod.
What I've read is that the 4090 mobile is essentially a 3090 desktop, which is pretty insane performance. People might complain about naming conventions, but what should they name the mobile card instead? 3090? Then people would think it's outdated and not buy it. Maybe then need to simply do a 4090i or 4090M instead.
Hi Jarrod. Are you expecting Clevo X370 barebone based laptops in review? For example from XMG. Also, which laptop with 4090 is the most quiet in your opinion? Maybe with custom fan curves if the laptop still would be capable for spreading 175W TGP. Also would love to see in your part of software review check is laptop allows you costomize fan speed at any current components temperatures. MSI gt77 for example allows to control fans only with temps below 80 degrees :(
I could be wrong but I don’t think nvidia mislead anything as laptop variants are not desktop variants regardless of how similar the boards are. In the laptop arena the cards are what they are and prove it with performance results. Performance now is also so good that people just look to complain because games aren’t over 100fps at 4k as if 48 to 70fps is bad. The only gripe I’ve had even though I’m loving the 4070 notebook variant is the low tgp when compared to the higher end cards considering they seem to hit full dynamic boost while the 4050, 4060, 4070 seem to be nerferd. If people get stuck on the naming then they have more issues that can be helped because personally they could have named it donkey brains and as long as it performs well for the price then why should I care.
You have to look at it in terms of laptops being in their own category. Sure, there's not as fast as desktop equivalents, but you also can't stuff your desktop in your backpack and travel with it. It really comes down to whether portability is important to you and worth the price.
Jarrod you should have tested it with two laptops one thicc chasis 175W and one regular just below chassis 130W, to see how much is the difference in performance, per dollar, per watt, per weight, per size 15inch vs 18 inch .
Good comparison. No one spending $5k dollars on a laptop is being misled. They have the basics down to look for. I promise. Naturally Nvidia has to use 4090 over 4080 Mobile as back in the day mobile versions sucked. Just makes sense to go with 4090. The Blade 18 I bought is absolutely awesome. Every single game is Ultra Maxed RT Quality FG and plays absolutely great. Definitely expensive but worth it from someone who actually spent the money on one.
Good video. We need to call out nvidia's BS more and more. Also, nvidia nerfed the max TDP on their top laptop gpu's. I'm sure that MSI titan can cool a 200w GPU no problems given pascal and turing's 1080 and 2080/super did. And with 200 to 230w it'd be even closer to the desktop 4080, likely reaching within 10% at which point the ''m'' can be removed since they're close enough.
I swear when the 4090 mobile first came out everyone was saying it’s just as powerful as a 4080 desktop. I been parroting that for nearly 2 years now I feel like a jackass.

But not all of us have that luxury
nice test, thx^^
1:14 Would've really liked to see the desktop card at 175W, maybe in a 4080 Laptop vs 4070 Desktop video?
When will the Zephyrus m16 review be out?😅
It's in testing at the moment.
Can we sue NVIDIA for misleading us the consumer?
@@marcm. You might want to check current gen laptop instead of talking about last gen stuff.
TY I always wanted to know how the laptop compare with the desktop, esp the die type info.
Thank you !
I used to test it a few years back, but it runs on pretty much anything so I stopped using it. I could consider it when I do a CPU comparison video.
@@JarrodsTech that's all I could ever ask, thank you !
Scar 16 4090 at $3700 really closes the price gap with the Desktop I think and still maintains pretty close performance to the Titan. I wonder what the price delta between the two systems would be if the desktop includes a mini-led monitor like some 4090 laptops do?
i realised how sht gaming laptops are after building my first gaming pc
I realized how sht desktops are after buying my first laptop. I'm not tied to one place anymore
If you get arrested for murder, can I get the GPU you used for it?
YAY!!!!!!!!! Thankyou very much!!!!
Still waiting for RTX 4060 vs 3070 comparison!
Great video Jarrod
Thnx!
The really interesting thing is how the 4090 laptop compares to the 4070ti desptop.
It's practically the same chip (AD103) only at lower TDP and smaller cooling system. Laptop 4080 has AD104 chip from 4070Ti desktop.
not really when you pay nearly $4000 for something thats called a 4090 yet it performs sometimes under a 4070ti.
@@gersongaete1574 precisely
They really need to change the naming convention. Just adding a fucking M at the end like they used to do.
I think the XMG NEO would have been a better choice for comparison, since it can run with watercooling and can be OC'd safely and stay stable even with clock speeds of 2600 MHz.
OC wouldn't be fair, i think it's better to compare them stock for the matter of this video
@@JacobSmith-rd8hl why, if the 4080 is running with 2.6 Ghz? Imo it would be fairer, just to see how the same die performs with the same speeds. And while OCing in my testing, the 4080 was only 15% ahead.
Awesome video as always!
Thank you again. While I'm not going to spend that kind of money, I do think this will ultimately effect the discounted price of lower end gaming laptops.
If I were building a mid-range PC though, I think I would go all AMD. It's a shame there aren't more all AMD laptops, as that would be more competition.
It seems we won't be getting any high end 7000 series GPUs from AMD this year. It's a shame since the 6800m was such a good mobile GPU
@@HanmaHeiro They still haven't formally announced desktop Navi 32 SKUs.

The same is true with 3070 Ti Laptop and 3070 Desktop, its the same die with 5888 cores.
23000 score in TimeSpy graphics for laptop gpu, huge...
2:44 its nice tho…
should we even get 40 series or just better with 3080ti
can you review asus tuf gaming a15 ryzen 7 7735 and rtx4050?
love your video. i hope you would always be this honest.
great content! curious if maybe down the line you could add in some a.i. stuff such as stable diffusion. Might be cool to see? Or maybe just a section on it when you do the vram/memory vid? I have a ton more interest in creative ai stuff now that chatgpt can help me code and even interface with different ai (hugginggpt). I'm sure others out there would be interested as well. I know it is way different content tho.
I admit I do not know much about that, are there any standard benchmarks for it that you can point me to?
Could you do a 4060 be 4070 performance comparison please? Would be amazing!!!
1:05. All you need to know
Ps. I like the way you riffed on "The way it's meant to be played".
Hey Jarrod, could you please do a Legion 5i Pro 2023 review? I haven’t seen much coverage on UA-cam and am wondering how it compares to the 7i Pro and last years 5i pro. Thank you!
That should be up next week
Sorry for nagging you, but what happened to the 4050 vs 3060 video?
I'm sure he's prioritizing certain videos that he either believes will perform better or are more vital to put out first
hi, I'm wondering between Alienware x15 r1 and Legion 5i pro 2022 when they both use rtx 3070. Can you compare these 2 machines because in my opinion they are quite similar.
Everyone seems to be surprised the Ohm's Law still prevails in electronics.

My brain also does this sometimes randomly. Stupid thoughts😂
Very insightful. I'm debating either a laptop or a desktop which the latter could be cheaper in terms of performance. Can you recommend how I can build the cheapest PC with a RTX 4080 GPU?
Tbh the desktop is ahead , True
But daaamn laptops have come a long way over the years and the gap is slowly but gradually decreasing
The gap used to be much closer back around 2015 with the 10 series laptop GPUs. 1080m and such
4090m has the biggest gap to the exact desktop equivalent in the past 8 years, too much of a tgp difference
@@niebuhr6197 you literally cant make 4090 desktop power in laptop. Right now we dont have that insane tech

Thanks (:
Can you please compare it to the Desktop 4070Ti? I believe both will be performing the same, but your test will give the definitive answer
Lol
I am seeing a lot of people on reddit raving about turning of the E cores in 13th gen intel chips when gaming. It increases average and 1% frames pretty consistently.
Nvidia should really return to naming the products after the chip. "Everyone" will know a mobile chip will perform less than a desktop chip (because of cooling/power limits) but being consistent on naming will help the consumers long-term in knowing what they are really buying.
THIS. completely agreed. 1000 and 2000 naming was the best.
also its not only about naming, the naming also dictates the pricing. This 4090M is getting sold at above 3080ti prices. It performs like a 4070ti or slightly less, yet it has the same pricepoint as a 4090 desktop which is like 50% faster.
@@gersongaete1574 it does have 1\3 more vRAM than a 4070 ti though, making it more future-proof.
Please test the different laptop CPU options against each other! Especially considering the possibly worse performance of the i9 HX processors. Thanks again for the excellent reviews Jarrod.
I have that planned!
@@JarrodsTech Excellent! There's truly no one else like you on UA-cam! Thanks Jarrod!
MSI gt77 for example allows to control fans only with temps below 80 degrees :(
Get a laptop that is compatible with a water cooler. You'll be amazed!
so i want to buy a new laptop around 1000$ so what better for me 3060 or 4050 ? for 1080 gaming
So naturally, I'd like to see a 4090 Laptop compared to a 4070ti desktop comparison now. Please and thanks 😂
Enormous power hungry hardware makes it difficult for laptops to catch up.
Thank you for this journalism style review 👍
"more data more better" 💪
You have to look at it in terms of laptops being in their own category. Sure, there's not as fast as desktop equivalents, but you also can't stuff your desktop in your backpack and travel with it. It really comes down to whether portability is important to you and worth the price.
Jarrod you should have tested it with two laptops one thicc chasis 175W and one regular just below chassis 130W, to see how much is the difference in performance, per dollar, per watt, per weight, per size 15inch vs 18 inch .
So, Nvidia slows down the AD103 die to the level of desktop 4070Ti, names it '4090', and laptop buyers are happy to pay for the name.
Now see, this guy's videos answer the questions you have
Good comparison.
4090 Laptop = 4080 Desktop + power limited to 175W
Good comparison & they should drop the price as its false advertising......
Hey, can you do a review of the Aorus 17X with the 4090 pls ?
Next - 4080m vs desktop 4070 ti?
Can you please compare this laptop RTX 4090 with desktop RTX 4070 super?
please compare amd ryzen 9 7945hx with intel 13980hx with rtx 4090
Would be interesting if we got a desktop 4090 175w with much lower BOM cost.
