Basic Neutral Wardrobe - Why I Stick To A Minimal Style
A lot of people have noticed I almost always wear neutral colors.
// Why I love neutrals //
1. Timeless
2. They look higher end
3. Preference. I just gravitate to them in everything: wardrobe, home decor and makeup.
// Why you should have a color scheme //
You don’t have to stick with neutrals to have a color scheme yourself.
1. Getting dressed is so much easier, especially if you’re short on space.
2. Having a color scheme makes buying clothes easier to decide and justify.
3. It means you’ve curated your wardrobe. You were intentional! You knew what you were doing when you bought that piece.
// How to pick a color scheme //
1. Evaluate your closet for colors you wear the most.
2. Look through photos of you wearing different colors, and be honest about how you feel in it.
3. Pin outfits you really like. See what colors repeat in your Pinterest board. Delete pins outside of the color scheme.
4. Narrow down your closet.
5. Use a color wheel to understand what colors go together, or use a color palette generator online.
6. Once you build your closet in that direction, you’ll feel more enabled to experiment adding a new color to your curated closet.
7. Throw out the rule book and choose whatever color scheme makes you confident and happy. :)
// My colors //
White, ivory/cream, brown, rust, gray (any shade), black. Also denim, metallics, and prints of those colors.

Neutral neutral neutral yesssss I don't get why anyone thinks it's boring when neutrals can show off texture, drape, shape and cut.. the quality of the clothes speaks louder in a neutral, I think ✊🙏
I like neutral because its very pleasing to the eyes. And plain too, not too much colors.
The only reason why I don't wear many light neutrals is because I'm scared of spilling stuff on myself 😂
me tooooo!!! i can't have a whie shirt last me more than 1 month :,)
You already know how much I love your videos, but I'm rewatching this one and still love it as much as I did the first time. Having a personal color palette is such a cornerstone of great style and yours is just perfect xx
aw thanks Audrey! :)
I agree with everything you say, EXCEPT: you have the skin tone for neutrals. They flatter your face and you look healthy in them. Some people just look like a walking corpse, if they attempt to wear white or cream or beige or grey. They need rich, deep, saturated colours and will look wonderful in them, even if they are hard to combine in a minimal wardrobe, especially if you like the monochromatic look. You'd have to decide for either greens or reds etc I guess, which is close to impossible since their message is much stronger than understated neutrals and you just can't feel like wearing red every day. :D
There are many different neutrals. There are neutrals for everyone.
You must find out your undertone skin colour fall into which category. Neutral, warm or cool. See videos on skin undertones to find the group of colours that suits your skin. Then you can plan your wardrobe based on your colour group
I'm pale with pink undertones and very dark hair & features - I wear red everyday.
Not muted red either - oxblood red
Hello this is me. I have extremely pale yellow undertone skin. My personal "neutrals" are black, dark reds, dark greens, and gold. In beiges or taupes I do indeed look like a walking corpse
I have warm undertone with clear complexion so I have to wear more “warm, bright” neutral shades that have yellow undertone. Anything muted makes me look dead.
I like neutral too because it goes with every season. And it's very simple.
Dressing in neutrals really does make you look more expensive, I don't really spend too much on clothes because I'm a college student who is on need based scholarship pretty much, but I dress a lot in neutrals like black, white, army green, grey with some pops of color. And I find that often times people assume I am more affluent than I actually am😂
I love the simplicity of neutrals, they never clash and give the best options to do monochrome. Black is flattering on you.
you're so right, they are perfect for monochrome!
Yes please do a video about buying online! Especially shoes. I am so scared to buy shoes online lol I can't be the only one xd
I do the same. Actually i never buy something in online
I will start using only neutrals for 3 reasons, all your clothes matches , it looks very elegant, and shoes match with all :) , so at the end we spend less. I will add accessories like scarfs to have some times some color.
In my closet I just have neutrals (denim, white, black, gray, navy, forest green, beige). But I know that I looove fall color scheme. Those burnt, dusty, dark rich colors ... Such an exquisite colors! Also I like softer colors like dusty blue, pink, purple, mint. But I don't own any of those colors. I have a goal for the new year. I want to incorporate new styles, silhouettes and new color scheme to my wardrobe. I'm 28 years old and I want clothing that suits my persona and express myself. Great video Beth. And yes! It would be great if you do a video about how you buy online. 😊
I love neutrals as a base and I love to mix them with really earthy tones like dark reds and greens. Neutrals are the base to everything :)
Your style is sooo gorgeous. I wish I could dress more minimal and neurtral. Too many prints and crazy colour in my wardrobe. It actually stresses me out. I need to be more like you. You are beautiful and a wonderful inspiration
YES! I subscribed to your channel after you said fashion is the antithesis of timeless. One reason fashion goes out of style so quickly is because of fast fashion. It's so bad for the environment, it's to make some people very rich, and it makes people dissatisfied with what they own. Having a neutral wardrobe or a capsule wardrobe is KEY. I totally agree with you about these things.
Neutrals are so great!! I personally like to get tops and bottoms in neutrals and then buy something like a cardigan or a jacket in a color. If all your basics are in neutrals then your pop of color will be sure to match with everything whereas if everything you buy is in a color things won’t match as much.
I love the idea of a how you shop online video! I find online shopping so tricky so any tips you have would be great!! ☺️
I love this video. I own a lot of grey and black clothing and always got comments like “all you wear is the same color you should buy something different” now I feel so much better about my monochromatic wardrobe! For some people they do pull off having a bright multicolored wardrobe but me? Ah I love my shades of grey lol
I completely agree, Belinda! I get comments and DMs almost daily saying the same thing. You do what makes you the happiest!
thanks for teaching us alot abou basic neutral wardrobe.
hope you will make some video about closet /room tour 😜
Home tour also! ♥️
Quesssstionnnn. Do you have a video on how to properly take care of your clothing and maintain them to last longer. Like proper care how to store them, and wash them? Would be helpful if you break it down based off fabric
Love this girl. You really inspire me. I love that you do have your own style and do not follow trends. ❤
👍
Hi! I've always been interested in how you go about tucking in shirts of different materials (t-shirt vs blouse) so that they stay throughout the day; or how you might go about folding sleeves or hems in a flattering way.
Or tucking sweaters into pants so your pelvic area doesn't look to puffy!
I found myself nodding to everything you said! I recently did an inventory of my closet and realized I gravitate towards neutrals: black, white, grey, beige/ivory/nudes, navy, rust, and burgundy. I found a lot of “special occasion/event wear” that I haven’t worn in years and had several pieces I bought thinking I would need them for an occasion, but never did. I love not having to think too much about my outfits because everything has a purpose now and is interchangeable with everything I have. Thanks so much for this video! Please make a video about how you shop online because that’s my preferred method of shopping! Much love from NC!
Aw I love this Merry!
I wish I could wear the warmer neutrals that you wear, but they completely wash me out because I have cool undertones. I stick to black, white (some off-white, but no cream), gray, denim, navy, plum, and cooler blush tones. As much as I love a neutral color scheme, I do need some color in my life. However, I stick with the colors that look good on me. Royal blues and purples, blue-based reds, and a cool deep emerald green.
If I wear color, it’s usually a shirt or dress, and all my accessories and bottoms are neutral.
I with you on that. I actually had a neutral color wardrobe until I recently realized that I also have cool undertones. It made a world of difference to differentiate what truly works best on me. I loved browns and creams had so many in my wardrobe but I thankfully realized how drab I look compared to the cool colors you mentioned. (It definitely aged me).
So now my wardrobe is half black and slowing finding color.
I recently pondered to myself how do all this fit in my minimalist life now. Lol
Bethany.. your video is just like answer to all of my questions inside my head, I really want to build neutral color wardrobe but don't know how to start, then I discovered your channel and I'm so thankful to UA-cam algorithm so I can finally found yours. Thank you wish me luck 🖤
Much love and luck to you!
I only wear black and white. But I still love fashion and fun! I totally agree with your points. Thanks for the video!
Neutrals are my fav! And even better when artists make clothing in those earthy neutral tones in earth friendly materials like linen and hemp. Those are my favorite colors to wear and they fit my personality. I need to go through my wardrobe again, there’s so much I don’t wear. Buying online is the best, independent artists make the best quality.
Great video! I find with my sallow skin, taupe is my gray, brown is my black, and cream is my white. I use peach and red accents because they brighten my skin. Thanks so much for all your advice!
I love the idea of a color sceme to make combining things easier... but i just love so many colors, i could never restrict myself :'D
Sure! It's not for everyone. You do what makes you happiest :)
I’ve found that I don’t look good in neutrals (beige, camel, brown, khaki, cream). Everything I wear has to have blue or pink undertones because my hair is blonde and my skin is very fair and super pink. I just look washed out in most neutrals, I love color, too. I love having flashes of vivid colors in the art on my walls, and I love patterns. I like to say my closet is very patriotic, because I look best in cherry red, white, and any shade of blue. So baby blue is a neutral in my closet, because it is a soft naturalistic color that complements my coloring, and so is baby pink or Heather gray.
I have the same coloring and have to agree with the baby blue part. And though heather gray is great, I've found ivory/cream (not bright white) looks better on me.
Me neither but greys, blues , browns are also neutrals :)
I love the way you dress, I identify a lot. I love to feel beautiful, comfortable, elegant and vintage at the same time. Every day I feel like in "practical magic". Un abrazo!
I find that dusty pastels are a great choice if you want to bring a bit of colour into a neutral wardrobe. They tend to really well with all neutrals.
I love neutral color palette. In clothing it makes great basic and looks classy and sophisticated. 🤗 You can always add a pop of color around a neutral basic, wether is it a jewllery or a shirt etc. It's the details 😀
Love this! I wear neutral colors, blacks, browns, whites, creams... but I also throw in a few colors! Mustard, a deep ruby, emerald green, and navy blue, and I have one cashmere shirt that is a burnt orange. Darker colors look the best on me!
would love to see a video on how you shop online! it's quite intimidating and i've also been trying my best to online shop less and buy in-person if possible. but again, i have to be weary about the expense
I can listen to you all day 👁️👁️👂👂. Time to update my wardrobe. Thanks for the tips.
Nice to know but also, you shouldn't justify yourself so much.
I respect your color options. They are timeless, and admire it. I like that color scheme you said. I wear pink orange yellow red, blue , aquamarine , brown and white most of the time. I don't feel comfortable with black (bottoms clothes yes) I believe we can stay loyal to our trademark but I also think we have to be open life is not about limits is about freedom and change your own rules. Xoxo
Totally agree with picking timeless items as a priority
Love all of your videos and seeing how you combine pieces! I would really love to see a full closet tour or full wardrobe video - I'm currently working on minimizing my wardrobe while also elevating it
My wardrobe is also really neutral but with a touch of bordeaux. I love that color so much and you are such an inspiration , i cannot get it in words❤️
Loved this video! Actually, since I started following you, I’ve also been trying to turn my wardrobe into the same basic neutral color scheme and I cannot believe how many benefits I’ve found out from it!!
That's amazing, Irene! Glad to hear that
I love your take on this, never change, you're very Authentic and Inspiring. Love your style.
Btw i know its out of topic, i can't help to always notice your plants in your background, you think you can make a room tour? I also own plants and i feel like i feel inspired by them.
Sure! I plan to do a few apartment videos coming up :)
I too am fascinated by the plant collection. I absolute appreciate the green in your videos. New subscriber and thanks for taking care of us petite ladies. ☺️
I Love neutrals and I get what you mean, they often look more expensive or classy. But why on earth wouldn't colors be timeless? A rich green, a deep red, etc. The nature is rich of colors, and that's wonderful. Of course, some colors are more trendy than others at a given time. But so what? If a colored item is a truly beautiful piece, in quality and shape, who cares if that color if not the one on trend at that moment? And according to the color palette theory, neutrals do not flatter everybody...
It's ok Audrey, you don't have to agree with it. I was just sharing the knowledge I have gained through my 12 years in the design industry using color theory on a daily basis and almost 500 days of study my own personal style. I never said other colors cannot be timeless. I said neutral colors are timeless. I also said a neutral wardrobe is not for everyone and that you should wear whatever makes you the happiest and most confident. If that is 12 shades of yellow... do it. That's what matters at the end of the day.
@@bethanyleonardo 👍👍
If you love colour, Daria from Wonder Wardrobe is definitively worth checking out. She has great tips on how to create very colourful capsule wardrobes. At the end of the day, we all have different aesthetic tastes - while going with neutrals may be easier, if that's not for you then Daria can help :)
Hahah, I should be wearing more neutrals outfits, but I don't look good in them. 🤷♀️. I look good in yellow, green, red, etc.
Funny because this is quite a western view I’d say, neutrals are associated with upper class and all. Not the same at all in eastern counties (where they ironically are more authentically spiritual and minimalist). Full of colour, including places of worship and religious dress.
Watching this as I just bought colourful sweater and kind of regret it 😅 After a few wears, I'm already tired of it.
You have such a lovely style! Love hearing your perspective on how it is curated.
Thanks so much!
Dearly Bethany You’re very welcome!
I totally agree about a colour palette. For example, I don’t like warm shades at all, so I got rid of them - all the reds, yellows, oranges. I love pink, blue, purple and a bit of emerald green together with black, white and grey.
The colour palette stopped me from going full shopaholic when I started earning my own money 😅
Warm but muted autumnal colors for me. They suit my skin tone and give off a slight vintage vibe. :)
I would really like to see a video on how you shop online, because I'm a bit afraid of how it will fit on me, If I can't try them on beforehand or I'm not sure which sites are worthy to try ☺
I always buy the amount that qualifies for free ship and 95% of stores do free returns so I buy 2 sizes keep one that fits return the other....once you go online shopping malls become horrible to shop at....I have absolutely no patience to shop in a store when online I can sort based on color or price range or size or whatever other filters I want
Yes, so happy your channel is growing 😭🖤
Oh wow, thank you for saying that! it means so much
Yes make the video of online purchase!! Im always very lost! An unlimited world of options OMG
I love your voice, I could listen to you talking all day :)
Yeah me too
Yes please! I would like to see a video of how you purchase clothes and shoes online. Thank you in advance Bethany! Keep on keeping on!
Neutrals is also such a simple lifestyle🖤
I really love neutral shades when it comes to clothes, beige, white, black, light peach Are my faves
Hey, Beth. I also love neutrals. I just do not know why. I find it very easy to put on neutrals and look good. I only wear bright colors on my nails and maybe sandals. I do not care if wearing neutrals makes one a 'boring' person. I only care about what feels right to me. So..do you and enjoy it
Be yourself, neutral is beatiful and I love it. Thanks for teaching us
Ive recently purged most of my clost (not that there was much in it in the first place lol) and found that most of the things I kept or liked were black, white, grey and occasionally a warm green or Burgundy and I set a color scheme but kept feeling like people would say oh why not get some color in there like a bright red or blue or something. But because of my complexion and dark hair and my figure black and burgundy and like really dark and neutral colors look good on me and I'm now realizing (by watching your video) it's not a bad thing. These colors make me look good and feel good so I should stick with them
yes, absolutely! Well said ❤
I love your clothing style! I noticed I tend toward neutrals too, but there are moments where I see something that's more saturated/bright and I know it'll stay with me for a while- it just stands out more! haha. Thank you for sharing!
Love neutral earthy tones ❤️
I think getting the neutral colour first then wait to get the other colour is a great idea. But only for slow-fashion stores. If it’s fast-fashion, it’ll be sold out by the time I decide to get it 😂
Yes, a video on how to shop online is definitely something I would like to see.
Yes show us how you shop online. I'm looking forward to revamping one day and I just LOVE your style🧡
Neutrals/earth tones made my life easier. Everytime I need to dress up, I don't have to think of matching my clothes as much as before. 😂
White in hot weather. Black in cold weather. Burgundy or maroon or garnet as my side color. Easy. Also, I’m not afraid to mix and match my dark blue with my dark grey, dark brown. I have a little of those colors in sweaters.
I like ur neutrol colors.Very classy look.elegant is the word.Keep up the great work!
Love this video I’m on this journey now transitioning my wardrobe/lifestyle (with changes to my home) been thinking bout it for 2 years. Im a lover of colors still so, I’ll do pop of colors with accessories such as shoes or purses but with items I already have. I vowed to myself to no longer to buy things that doesn’t fit my color palette for my wardrobe. I’ll live in my colors through my daughter she’s still really young. BTW the color scheme I decided to use are black, white, grey, tan/camel/khaki, deep I olive green and denim
Yea, please do a video on online purchase, for shoes and shirts specifically.. you are just awesome! Love from India
Psychology says what you wear is a reflection of your state of mind and personality. Holy heck, you proved them wrong. Ain't noone sweet as ya
This video is so so good! Thank you, I'm gonna start sticking to this because I always end up with a ton of clothes I just don't wear, and even tho I pretty much shop for clothes like twice a year these are super helpful tips!
Glad you liked it, Melissa!
Enjoyed this! Made me check in about the intentionality of my wardrobe. 👌
Thanks Jesse!
I would love a video on online shopping and how to know your sizes and stuff like that. It will be helpful and if it will work for your body shape.
Your wardrobe must be so beautiful omg
I recently found your channel and I'm binge watching all your videos!
aw thanks Kaela!
After watching this vid, I literally pulled out all of my neutrals in my closet and got surprised with the amount of black clothes that I do have!! Thanks for this video, girl. I realized I can mix and match these neutrals along with my bright colored clothes to make a new outfit! No need to buy anymore this Holiday season! Thanks a lot, sis!
I love neutrals and it's definitely easier, but some days I do just want to wear a bright red t-shirt. I've tried the colour scheme thing before and I can't commit to a scheme. I like blue, red, purple, pink, orange and yellow... I'm envious of people that love to wear neutrals every day.
timelessness is the most important thing when it comes to choosing an outfit for me. i too stick to neutrals, more of cooler tones, and love to have red items for an accent. also i usually get colorful dresses because i don't have to worry about pairing ;)
I love your style and colors you wear. Neutrals are so much easier to style.
Yes please do a video about buying things online! I find online shopping overwhelming
can you please do a home tour . i love gardening inside home
I would love to see a video on how you online shop! Most Vloggers only do the super cheap brands, which I generally don’t trust.
I would SO love to hear about how you buy online!! Thank you so much for offering us as much as you do!
Love to see how you perches online and I really like the way you talk, it feels really calm and honest:)
I had been following your pinterest board and you have such a nice taste. I honestly didn't know you were on youtube glad to watch
Oh that’s so cool! Welcome ❤️😊
I'm so with you on this!
Extremely informative video on curating a wardrobe that works!!! Yes to a "Shopping Online" vid in the future.
You are a go to fountain of knowledge on what to shop 🛍 for. Gracias 🇨🇺
thanks so much!
So informative! I 500% agree with your reasoning to stick to neutrals. I am working towards revamping my wardrobe after 2 years of not buying anything at all. I am starting to feel stuck with my current wardrobe & am anticipating your next vid about online shopping. Do you use this curatorial approach with workout clothes? I manage a warehouse that is casual but I am required to walk around and sweat. What kind of wardrobe would you suggest?
I do follow this with my workout clothes as well. They are mostly all neutral colors. This makes dressing athliesure super easy.
Hi J R, for sweating a lot wear natural fabrics, and a loose, easy breasy fit for tops, in colors that don't show sweat stains. You can wear some comfy, looser jeans or shorts, paired with some stylish boots or shoes with shock and arch support. ;)
I’d like to see realistic videos on how many clothes we humans actually need! I am baffled that there is the internet, and still, there aren’t the informations or am I super impatient?
Because I am looking into simplifying my life in terms of clothes for example, too, and I would really appreciate the experience of someone who has been doing this and can share how many of what has carried them through and what they thought a comfortable number was, for example T-shirts, bottoms altogether, trousers, jumpers etc. I know everybody is different but I am thinking that it can help to know how many to keep altogether. 🤷🏼♀️
Yes, I would love to see your process for buying online! Thanks Bethany.
Loved this video!! I’m going to follow you because your style is classy but not boring. Plus I like it’s not just black n white like other minimalist! Please do a video on websites that have beautiful durable clothes that don’t brake the bank! Much respect!
Wow! Antithesis....love the way you talk! I feel more calm! Please make a video when you update your apartment
Thanks Katerina! Definitely will do that :)
Excellent points and great advice. I love your style. Since you ask for suggestions and respect your understanding of classic image,
I would love some videos on fashion for the 40+ crowd. Make up too would be great and lastly, I’d really appreciate some capsule videos. I travel a lot. If you find you can do any of these I’d be most grateful. Thanks again.
I like neutrals but I love colours too. I’m home decor I love rich greens and blues.
yes please! tell us how you shop online!!!
Yes to online shopping idea!
First comment on UA-cam ever- I love your channel that much! Thanks for the inspiration, you make classy and modern dressing seem so effortless. And yes, please, would love to see a video of how you shop online. (Actually I was about to check if you had a video on that!) Thank you, Bethany!
i would love to see your online shopping tips!
Please consider doing a neutral home tour. Love this vid :)
I would really love to see a video on the online shopping thing. I am quite apprehensive when it comes to purchasing clothes online. Not sure if it will be a good fit or not.
Your voice is so soothing ❤️
Cassly Jane Ruiz soooo therapeutic!
