Thanks for all your advise, I was having problems with all my DragonFruit plants, never could get them to grow buds until I listen to your videos and discovered that all the growth around the base upwards was where all the energy was being placed by the plant, so I went to trimming and cut off everything from the bottom up. Thanks so much for all of your informative videos, they have helped so much! Today, I didn't quite get the part about sacrificing a fruit to find out the variety. Can you clarify for me?
You’re welcome! If you don’t know what variety you have exactly, then you want to go through a few test. Potentially sacrificing a flower just means that you use one with its own pollen to find out if it’s self-fertile, and if it doesn’t work, then your plant will have to be cross pollinated
Thanks Richard for this post and all your other very educational posts. Luckily my flowers are starting to set as I think I was not brushing on the pollen correctly. I started to make sure the pollen goes in the hole on the stigma. It seems to be working. I have another specific question. Is it absolutely necessary to break off the dried flowers after pollination, If you don’t pull off the dead flower will the fruit continue to grow. I think I may have pulled too hard on one and the fruit aborted. Thanks for you dedication helping us all out who are now fascinated and now growing dragonfruit !
You don’t have to pull it off. Can leave it on, but I do recommend take it off once it starts getting bigger because it could maintain moisture and lead to mold at that part

These are planted in the ground heavily mulched and given good doses of fertilizer. They handle our 95 degrees well. When should blooming fertilizer be applied? Hey Richard, what is the best way to combat ants attacking my dragonfruit plant and eating it. I grow organically, so I would prefer some natural methods if possible. Thanks again about the organic fertilizer, keep getting buds. Much appreciated sir.
So I have an American beauty that I hand pollinated but only 1 out of 4 turned into a fruit 😢. Is it too much sun or water? I live in NW Florida, summer are super hot and humid.
Your videos have been SO helpful for us since we've started our dragon fruit growing journey a few years ago. Thank you so much, Richard! I had a few questions regarding pollination and cross pollination. 1) If I have a self-sterile variety, does it matter what type of other variety I use to pollinate, or can I use the pollen of any other variety (including other self-sterile varieties)? 2) Does a self-fertile variety only work when you use its own pollen? Or would it still work if I only cross pollinated it? 3) If I pollinate two flowers of the same self-sterile variety with two DIFFERENT variety's pollen (one variety per flower), would the fruits still come out the same? Or does the pollen variety affect how the final fruit turns out? Thank you for considering my questions! :)
You’d want to avoid the self-sterile in the same family. Sometimes they don’t like the pollen and it won’t take., however with you can usually use any other varieties including self-sterile. You can cross any self-fertile with something else. 3. They will come out with some slight differences. They take DNA from both parents
So last year I only had like 4 flowers and one of them fruited but it was really small. This year I've probably had like 30 flowers and all of them either fell off or stayed on and fell off after a few weeks. I cut it open and it's not pollinated. The cuttings are from a plant that produces tons of fruit so I'm confused on what to do. I self pollinate when I catch the flowers open. It's a red dragon fruit plant
my one plant has four buds after tipping last year and guess i will find out if it is self-pollinating after trying to pollinate in in the next few weeks , were is a good place in cali to buy a mature plant that is a known self pollinated variety
At 5pm l can identify which flowers will open that night. How long should l wait after it opens . Is there a chance that lm late to pollinate to work the pollinating process. What is the optimum time from openning time
I usually wait until it opens at least 75% before I start pollinating. The earlier you get it done, the less chance of another creature messing with it.
Well, my friend , I had no idea this is how you get the plant to fruit. I have never eaten them , so I decided I would eat what I planted. I managed to get three different varieties at different ages. The first has started blooming now after three years. I didn't know their method of pollination, and neither do I know their types. I am a bit nervous.
Hi Richard, I've been hand pollinating my dragon fruit for the past few years, but only about 50% of the flowers become fruit. This year, it seems like the ones that I hand pollinated fell off, and the ones I didn't hand pollinate (I was on vacation) set more fruit. My other variety didn't flower at the same time so I couldn't cross pollinate. Any suggestions on the hand pollination? I used your video as a guide. Also, can I save the pollen from one variety for several days or a week and then use it on my other variety when it flowers? Will the pollen still be good? Thanks!
Thank you for sharing this info. I’m truly grateful for your really great explanation of the different types of dragon fruit plants. I know I have two types. They are supposed to be self pollinated, but I have found that crossing it is better even if it’s self pollinating. Is that normal? I’ve taken the pollen from both, and now use both on the flower. Is it too much to do that? I figure more is better. But I had 14 flowers on the two plants open in two nights. I praying I had a better pollinating this time! 🙏🤞 your the best! Thanks again!
how I know the dragon fruit is still ok or to big to really produce maximum amount, what signal, if any, show me is time for divisions and/or establish a new plant
Dear Richard, I have three types of white variety ( i do not know the variety's name) . Of the three varieties one variety has no stigma to pollinate. So the fruits gets yellow and fall off in a week after setting. Please help 🙏
Learned a lot from Watching your vids. ❤Thank U. I’ve recently cross pollinated my flowers then after 1-2 wks they aborted. Do you know what else could have happened?
Hi, Richard. I was wondering what happened to the General Hydroponics FloraNova Bloom fertilizer. Did you delete it? I was going to go back to my questions.
Hello Richard, I’ve had this dragon fruit tree for about 3 years, this is the first year that it’s blooming with several flowers, I’m not getting any fruit can you help
This means that your variety is not the kind that can set fruit with its own pollen. You need to get another dragon fruit variety like .. Vietnam white , sugar dragon, American beauty one of those to help pollinate the one you have now to be successful with it setting fruit.
Dear Richard, you mentioned that a self sterile variety needs to be pollinated from another variety, but you didn't clarify whether the other variety has to be self fertile or self sterile or it doesn't matter? So my question is, can two self sterile dragon fruit varieties successfully pollinate each other?
I live in Fl and have been looking for dragon fruit pollen to no avail. I purchased from a local nursery what I was told was an American Beauty, it has flowered prolifically but, never set fruit, so sad. I have purchased Yellow Palora and Sugar Dragon to use for future cross pollination but, it’s going to be awhile before they flower. Any suggestion where I can buy pollen?
I got my dragon fruit graft from a friend and never produce fruit and it fits your definition of self sterile. However my friend told me the original plant produced fruit before. What does it mean?
My Vietnamese friends all grow tons of sugar apple. Seems u only grow dragonfruit. I agree dragonfruit is much better for taste and variety. Finally rains come but how to reduce or remove black sooty mold without wiping all the stems? I grow many exotic SE Asian fruit trees.
I've had fruit the past 3 years, no problem. Suddenly this year they turn yellow after flowering and fall off. They weren't self sterile before, what happened?
Let’s get this to 1000 likes! Thanks for watching. Hope this video was helpful! 😊

@@GraftingDragonFruit oohhh!! Got it!! Thank u and I might have some questions in the future as I watch your video . Hope to increase my knowledge of dragon fruits so that I can be prepared for my first ones :3
Hey Richard, what is the best way to combat ants attacking my dragonfruit plant and eating it. I grow organically, so I would prefer some natural methods if possible. Thanks again about the organic fertilizer, keep getting buds. Much appreciated sir.
Try using an ant bait
Dragonfruits sir look beautiful many variety...
Nice your presentation.
Thank you
i dont know my dragon fruits type but it was white on the inside and purple on the outside is it self fertal?
I'm in northern california I use other pollen and all my 20 flowers still aborted. U think I left to many branches on this season?
Yeah it may have been too much and not enough energy for it all. Many factors can play into it.
can you try to do the "drill bit" graft? its when you drill out the cambian and stick another cambian into the hole
I'll add that to my list of experiments. If I do, will definitely make a video
what's the reason for the yellowing branches?
What types are self fertile?
Thank you!
Welcome!
Richard, my Connie Meyer had two buds but the flower never opened and aborted. Would you know why?
Might not have been enough nutrients/energy for it to mature
Hi Richard,
I've been hand pollinating my dragon fruit for the past few years, but only about 50% of the flowers become fruit.
Thanks!
??..Is pitaya blanca typically found in US markets considered self fertile or self sterile?….
Very good video. I was looking for a reason why my plant was not giving fruit. Now I have come to know that it is a sterile variety. Tried all means 😢
Not at all. Always good to increase your chances
how I know the dragon fruit is still ok or to big to really produce maximum amount, what signal, if any, show me is time for divisions and/or establish a new plant
Good Class ❤
Mine been dropping flowers have tried pollinating with pollen from a different plant but still they drop the flowere
Hello!! Is there a variety that can be used as a “master” cross pollinator?
There’s not really a master pollinator, but American beauty is always solid
some of the flowers are setting fruits but many of them are falling after pollination how can I fix that
Like i said before amazing!!! Content!!! I had 36 flower 13 I pollinated and all my flowers failed except my first flower. I'm in northern California
Could be other factors or it’s not the variety you were told it was
If you have 2 different kinds of dragons that are self sterile, can you cross pollinate them and have fruit set?
Yes as long as they’re different, you’re good to go!
Dear Richard, I have three types of white variety ( i do not know the variety's name) . Of the three varieties one variety has no stigma to pollinate. So the fruits gets yellow and fall off in a week after setting. Please help 🙏
Learned a lot from
Watching your vids.
I didn't so i don’t know
@@GraftingDragonFruitsorry I see the VD now. Thanks
Which dragon fruits are self pollens and the other needs cross pollination?
Hi.
How many selfpolinated dragon fruit plants varsities are there?
So that polination(manual) problems can be avoided.
There’s too many too say. Hundreds of dragon fruit varieties out there
i am dragon fruit grow about 4 yrs, i noticed that my dragon plant grow like crazy. Shoudl I tin them down?
Dear Richard, you mentioned that a self sterile variety needs to be pollinated from another variety, but you didn't clarify whether the other variety has to be self fertile or self sterile or it doesn't matter? So my question is, can two self sterile dragon fruit varieties successfully pollinate each other?
Doesn’t matter. Self-sterile just means you can’t use its own pollen for itself
@@GraftingDragonFruit hi Richard , a typo error - self sterile CANT use its own pollen for itself not CAN.
@@GalaxyFarmer1022 great catch! Yes typo error on the auto correct
Try asking in my FB group
I have the same issue. American beauty located in NWF. Out of 15 flowers only 1 fruit 🤦🏽♂️. I’m guessing too much sun and water
I got my dragon fruit graft from a friend and never produce fruit and it fits your definition of self sterile. However my friend told me the original plant produced fruit before. What does it mean?
Did your friend cross pollinate it with another variety?
Thank you very much à
Most welcome
I have a question 'which grafting method is better and more successful for dragon fruit'
Check out the videos on grafting in my channel.
Sweet!

At pollination, I cover my flowers with plastic to avoid pollin robbing from bees,How long shd l keep them on.
You can take them off the next day in the afternoon. The pollination process occurs pretty quick
Only way to reduce them is to keep them as dry as possible with coverings, but that's hard to do
Does pollinating the flower hours before it opens make a fruit?
Sometimes I pollinate my (Israeli yellow) with its own pollen and sometimes it fruits and sometimes it doesnt. Any other reason why?
THanks
Could be not enough nutrients and energy for all the flowed to set
I've had fruit the past 3 years, no problem. Suddenly this year they turn yellow after flowering and fall off. They weren't self sterile before, what happened?
Can be many factors including my weather, nutrients, timing. This season was tough for a lot of people due to weather
Is there a way to tell what type of dragon fruit your growing if you don’t know what kind they are?
There’s not unfortunately
