    Do not need different species, just a different flower. When you have only one flower, save the pollen ( freeze) to use on the next flower. Cross species pollination effects the seed genes, not the fruit.

    There’s a technique women use with those highlighter brushes, we tap the excess off. You could try tapping the brush to make the pollen gently fall off onto the stigma. Very helpful!!

    This has been a very good tutorial. After waiting for 2-3 years, tonight I finally got my first and only dragon fruit flower. It's 8 pm now and the flower has opened up. I'm going to do exactly like you did to self pollinate. Thank you.

    You are awesome. I have 2 dragon fruit flowers in my Earthship that are ready to bloom tonight. For the first time one of the other species is about ready to bloom also. It is much smaller and reddish all the others have been white and large like the one in your video. I will attempt to pollinate the two white with the red one. Wish me luck so far I hav not been able to produce any fruit on them.

    Very good demonstration. I brought my first dragon fruit plant today, but It's very tiny so I think I ill be waiting quiet a while. You can see the extra roots that sprout for when they grow naturally along the ground to suck up more nutrients and water from the earth. I would actually like to see how well they grow along the ground.

    Most Dragon flowers are self fertile and have alot of pollen - Home grow taste amazing over store bought
    so I hope they ripen well for you - Ripening tip is --- wait for the flower to dry and nearly or fall off and are ready to eat -
    enjoy

    A date with pitaya ah, jake my dragon fruit was in full sun abd didnt set fruit even if pollinated, maybe it is not self pollinating, anyhow now its in part shade and i hooe it will set finally.
    From some other youtube vids u saw its a jungle cacti and not a desert one so probably its not well afapted to full sun in hot areas.. Any input in that?

  • @GumbiiGrows
    @GumbiiGrows 5 років тому +3

    nice video, but your technique is good for other flowers, not really for hylo cactus or other types... in side the stigma, there is a tiny hole that goes all the way back to the ovary... by just shaking the pollen, it is not enough to make it go through... you have to pretty much pour the pollen into the hole in the middle of the stigma... i'm sure you got some fruits, but most hybridizers pack the hole of the stigma with pollen with a small piece of cardstock or plastic...

The Christmas cactus thrive but have never formed fruit. I have yet to see dragon fruit flower, but yours is similar in form to my other cactus. please show us more as you learn.

    • @GumbiiGrows
      @GumbiiGrows 5 років тому

      it is very complicated to get them to fruit... or to cross pollinate... i usually cut off most of the pedals from the top... carefully... then wait until the stemen and pollen stretch out and the pollen is released.. it's very hard to get the pollen into the tiny hole of the stigma...
