Just an FYI for fans of this story: it was adapted as an episode of the old radio program "Escape" in 1952. Its pretty good too. It was done previously as an episode of "Suspense" but they changed the ending for some unfathomable reason.
Hi John! I've seen one (maybe both) of those radio broadcasts posted on UA-cam but haven't listened all the way through. How did they change the ending? Don't tell me he...escapes...? Fantastic story though. One of my all-time faves.
I remember seeing this as a film many years ago, with Alec Guinness and Kristen Scott Thomas. I didn’t know what it was called, but the story is very intriguing to me. I am very pleased that you have read it for us. Thank you!
Ever since I read this as a child, I have classed it as *the* most creepy story (well, one of them). I don't know if I dare read it again! "Comedic", indeed. It still gives me the shivers!!
I am not someone with violent fantasies or urges. I get sad, not angry, and forgive almost immediately after any kind of injury, even when someone isn’t remorseful. It’s just how I’m wired. Even I was enraged at this guy. 😂
I have to say, you really have one of the best voices for narration I have ever heard. Not only do I love the accent, but your enunciation, your tempo, and your soft spoken voice are all absolutely perfect for these tales. There are a few ghost story channels narrated by British men, and they are enjoyable, but they all seem to have very rough, brittle sounding voices for some reason, with very few exceptions, especially Horrorbabble. I don't know if they really speak this way, or they are trying to sound edgy, but it really doesn't work. Keep doing what you're doing! I really don't know why you don't have more subscribers! (And Jasper is a lovely name)
Thank you for your kind comments. A lot of it comes down to personal taste. I'm just glad enough people find me listenable to make the channel worthwhile.
I’ve just discovered this channel after a recommendation from another channel. I’m loving the stories and particularly like your voice. This beautifully menacing story is made all the better by how you have read it. Thank you
Another solid entry into your growing Library of amazing stories Jesper👍 I can’t say it enough..how much I enjoy and appreciate what u do man..it’s a big part of my day..as I suffer from major depressive episodes and anxiety..so this helps to turn my brain off at night n just listen to a great story n not have to think so much n b up all night worrying n stressing about things constantly, like I always use to do..so thank u Jesper, truly👊
I haven’t read this for years; your reading was perfect! Such a malevolent tale…*shudders* you captured the nastiness & madness of the old man perfectly! When one day you’re making obscene amounts doing commercial VOs, I’ll be glad to think that I enjoyed your early work, very well done!
It appears to be a shortened version of A Handful of Dust which I've never read but watched the film a while ago. Think I preferred this version.... and of course the great narration 😁 Cheers
Hi Hannah. Great book, Handful of Dust. Pretty good film, as I remember. Waugh wrote this story first and obviously thought he'd wasted it as a magazine story so adapted it as the ending to his novel. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Thank you! Don't congratulate me on my good taste just yet - I've just recorded a truly appalling story that is in the worst possible taste! But variety is the spice of life, eh? Thanks for listening and commenting 🍻
He should have let his no-good wife shack up with that Coldstream Guard blackguard and that would have been the end of it. Although, that easy solution would have deprived us of a good story...
Wow. Really chilling😱. Love the very plausible premise, and the finality of the protagonist's fate. Terrifying and nightmarish. A bit similar to the plot of Misery by Stephen King...
Indeed. Sort of an inversion of Scheherazade and the Arabian Nights, isn't it? In which the storytelling is the fate rather than the means of survival.
Englishman...wandering aimlessly through the impenetrable jungle...starving, bilious, infested with parasites...suddenly meets a fellow english speaker...and immediately apologizes for his appearance.
@@EnCryptedHorror hopefully that will be soon on both counts lol. I'm very impressed with the stuff on the channel. "With or without buttons" is a true great. Don't miss the opportunity of having female narrators for some of the stories. It seems to still be mostly a case of other men telling you the tales.....(not that I don't appreciate your work. Looking forward to more.)

Good story, but it's terrible for the poor man! I feel so sorry for him!
Fantastic narration!
This was horrifying! Waugh was such a great talent.
So well written and perfectly read thank you ❤

Well done. Thank you!
You're welcome, Brian! 👍
Oh my God I’ve had such a long day, I get home and I see this! Thank you God! And you Jasper!!!! This is just what I need right now!
Always found Evelyn Waugh stories boring ...but not this gem! Brilliant narration as always Jasper. Thanks🤗👻
Cheers Manas! 🍻
Sounds like an origin story for audiobooks! Most well done, Mr L. Don't let McMasters get hold of you...
Yes, Paul Henty would have been fine if there'd been UA-cam and wi-fi...

Excellent, professional quality, incredible voice. Thank you.
Thank you, Budda-Kuh 👍
Now THAT was one of the saddest, CREEPIEST tales I’ve heard--with a perfect character sketch of a Sadist….
kept waiting for him to get away .poor man 😁
I've heard he's still there now, reading Little Dorrit for the 1000th time...

As usual wonderful sound effects & fine reading for a living nightmare of a story ... book burning might come to mind for the *captive reader*
Congratulations on reaching 1000 subs Jasper, a well deserved achievement. This is another excellent reading.

I can't believe I neglected to leave a message on this, a personal favorite. So here it is, better late than never I hope 💜
I agree with your assessment of this story being horrifying...It's so creepy and sinister, and you just know...
A lot left unsaid too. Thanks for listening, Rosie!
what a story 👍👍👌👌
Excellent
I listened to this because it was cited for being inspiration behind misery

I don't think I can ever read Dickens again.
I'm trying to think which author''s books would be my preference if I was in Henty's situation.
@@EnCryptedHorror Maybe Arthur Conan Doyle or Thoreau

I always find the comeuppance for the wife so satisfying.
In "A Handful of Dust", yes. One of my favourite novels.
I want to switch from memberships to Patreon. Is that any better on your end? Do either take more before you get it than the other?
I don't usually like Waugh but this was top notch - and an awful tale! My God, what a nightmare and the ending - aaarrrggghhh!
Thanks Susan 😊
