If I said this story was gripping, would I be guilty of being punny? In truth, it was a most enjoyable experience. The sequence with the dog leaping around the room reminded me of something my father had experienced in his 20's. As an apprentice in the railways, in Castlerock, India, a senior driver had insisted my father stay at his house for the night. Alone in the huge bungalow, he heard the sounds of chains and anklets in the next room. After a while he took the mattress and shifted to the front hall. The driver's Cocker spaniel then became extremely agitated and started leaping over my dad and snapping in the air. Not waiting for anything more drastic, my dad scooted from there like a bat out of hell, braving the wet darkness of the surrounding forest, running down the hill in sheer terror. Apparently, the driver avoided staying at home, and rode any train up and down for the night while drinking himself to sleep. Thank you for the marvelous reading. I've subbed, and looking forward to more!
Thank you so much for listening, subbing and your kind words. Thanks also for sharing the story of the crazed cocker spaniel. The rattle of the chains in the next bedroom of a stranger's house is never comforting at the best of times 😂! Plenty more stories on their way - and puns are very much welcome here ;)
Pretty darn bloodthirsty stuff, Jasper! Mary certainly let loose on this one....👀 What a great story, and told with your usual meticulous attention to detail ❤
Mr Lestrange, i love your channel....your stories are eerie and mysterious and your narration delivers an equal sense of mystery befitting 18th century superstition and horror. Thank you.
The Victorians loved a good disembodied hand story. Hairy, missing fingers, wearing a family ring, you name it and there's story. Always wondered what was up with that and came to the conclusion that The Quality was probably horrified at the idea of a bodily part doing wrong when it should have been firmly under control. 🤐
Yes, it's the Devil finding work for idle hands. In my reading around for the channel I come across loads of disembodied hand stories - good ones - but I recognise the need to space them out 😄
Wow - what an excellent story, and so well read. Yes, I, too, thought we were headed for a vampire tale, so that was a surprise! Poor Brian, though - man's best friend, faithful to the last. Thank you very much indeed!
First of all, I would never go into a dark crypt by myself let alone lock the gates behind me, and then sit there drawing definitely not after hearing movement behind me!!! 😱 I'd be outta there like Usain Bolt on speed; my heels bouncing off the back of my head !!!
A wonderfully written story by an author I was unaware of, so I'm grateful you've opened my eyes. Your narration is without fault and you have the perfect voice for this genre. I enjoyed this immensely and subscribed. Thank you very much for your brilliant work 👏👏👏
This is one of my favorite short stories but I thought it might be too obscure to find a recording. A really enjoyable performance that honors the material. Thank you!
What a tale. No way I'd be in an old (or new, for that matter) crypt. And if there was anything at all remotely after me, I'd kill it..with heel dust from running away! 😆
Haha! I do love that the Victorian/Edwardian gents in many of the stories think "Four weeks off? I'll spend it exploring haunted crypts and churches..."
@@EnCryptedHorror Ikr? I am the gal who has always found cemeteries peaceful. My bf and I growing up spent lots of time at one close to our houses..it had a lovely pond with ducks and geese. We rode our bikes and spent hours there (weird, yep..lol) But exploring an underground crypt through 2 locked doors in Victorian times with only candles is a hard Nope for me.
A very creepy story beautifully told which I enjoyed very much. I will subscribe and look forward to other somewhat less famous classic stories. Could I suggest one that I would like to hear: Sheridan Le Fanu The Fortunes of Sir Robert Ardagh. Keep narrating these excellent stories.
Great, Cary! As you can imagine, I have a long list and there are a handful of Sheridan Le Fanu stories on it (including that one!) so watch this space. Thanks for the comment, and for subscribing.
Great story and brilliant narration but my dog got quite upset at the sounds of poor Brian's final scene. So, take this as a good review from Hugo the chihuahua (from Yorkshire), it made quite an impression on him.
Brilliant story but my beautiful old cat died earlier this year and this is my first Christmas without him He was 15 and was so healthy then about February of this year he just lost weight then he couldn't breathe properly I couldn't get a vet it was Easter weekend 3 days I had him on my lap then got him to the vet on the Tuesday after the bank holiday He was put to sleep I sobbed for 3 days Spike his name was Not just a cat he was my friend and I miss him more than life itself Landed up in hospital I was quite stressed and very ill Sorry the point I should have made sooner was that when animals are hurt or killed be it in fiction or reality I get so wound up And those FEKIN RSPCA adverts oh my life Some people should not go near an animal let alone have one as a pet But there you go This story was very good though Horror of Abbots Grange still my fave and wouldn't you bloody know it the dog gets done by the vampire at the beginning but Lord William Sultan is it ? I've listened to about a dozen now The 15th green is a creepy one Wish that would happen to all golfers 😂😂😂 Cheers 🥂 and Thankyou for your brilliant work it is much appreciated Have a fantastic Christmas from David East Anglia Coast North Norfolk 👏 ♥️🎄⛄🎁⭐🕊️
Sorry, I don't understand. But this is quite an old video of mine, recorded before I learnt to slow down my narration and leave longer gaps between sentences.
@@gosianutjob9578 Oh, I've just remembered something else. I used a pitch correction on my voice for the woman narrator who opens the story which then goes to my usual voice when the male recounts his story. That might account for why you think it's sped up.
I hope you enjoy this story from 1890. Apologies to dog lovers and people from Yorkshire. You have been warned...
Thanks for the warning! I'll just move on to your next excellent reading!
@@carolrios9216 Thanks for joining the channel!
Whoops, I really should have read this warning first - what a miserable cur that man was.
But the story was so well told 😁
OUTSTANDING JASPER AND MARY THANK YOU CHIEF 🎯👍HOPE YOU ARE WELL SIR
One of your best. Especially about that heroic dog, who had only been fighting desperately to save his master.
I know! RIP Brian 🙏

What a well-done story, Jasper! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for the tale!
Brilliant JASPER and. MARY. THANKS 🎯👍

Great story and narration. This one ended in a scary manner. This is a fine yarn!
