Fantastic! Atmospheric... creepy. Transported back in time. The music and effects are perfectly suited to this WHH classic.

I like to think you can complete the nautical effect at home by listening in the bath, wearing a sowester, and opening a tub of swarfega and a can of pilchards 😄
      Glad you enjoyed the story!

Probably one of the best of the few storytellers out there., that I like.Appreciate proper pronunciation, and appropriate vocal intonations. The art of story telling is the only thing that hasn't changed much since humans first became human. The medieval song/poets called jongleurs memorized thousands of stories some of em hours long. The better your story telling, the longer you got
food and a place to sleep by the fire.long and important tradition that kept our collective history alive

I have listened to thousands of audio stories over 40 years,....you are among the top tier of narrator/storytellers---mighty excellent you are! Wow! Its a true art to bring a story to life .. and a gift--and you have the gift! Thanks for sharing it with us.....you have excellent taste in stories too....i know some narrators who are good but choose junky, even stupid stories to narrate---that kills it. But you choose great tales and then bring them fully to life--its MAGIC what you do.

Thanks Robert. Now there's a review to be proud of ☺. I always read stories for the show that (a) I like something about and (b) have some element that suggests an audio treatment.
It's early doors but I'd hate to just read things for the sake of it...

Love Hodgson. This one is brilliant. Subbed.
The Ghost Pirates would be another good one to do. In any case: more Hodgson. 💚

It's a long one, but I do like a maritime tale. Will certainly get back round to Hodgson in time. A few of his are on the long list. Thanks for subbing and commenting, Xadrum!

I first read this at an inappropriately early age - maybe 9 years old - and it haunted me for years! I had never encountered it since - until now. It was a pleasantly scary surprise to hear it read and produced so beautifully here. Thankfully I am now old enough - well old enough - to handle the chills this time round ;)

I seem to remember it from my schooldays too but had forgotten the title. When I came across it in an anthology it all flooded back. It really is a haunting story.

I suspect it was in one of that 'Umpteenth Pan Book of Horror' series. I wonder how the author dreamt up such a horribly brilliant idea.

Exquisitely performed and orchestrated. Every time I listen to one of the podcasts from Encrypted Horror, I am absolutely blown away by all of the special audio effects, the music, the different voices, the works. It's all just so well done right down to the last detail. This is so much more than a podcast, it's professional audio theater. The way these are done, it makes one feel like you're actually there and part of the story, wow! Thank you so much for creating these!

Oh, what a fantastic story! I love it so.
I love WHH! He had an interesting life and was a phenomenal writer. He, like so many other good men, was killed during the Spring Offensive in 1918. He fell in the Ypres salient during the 4th Battle of Ypres. I always wonder what works he would have brought us if he had lived. This guy had some stones on him.
They do not make writers like this today (other than my friend Jasper and a few others).
Now you get to do "The House on the Borderland"! I'm just kidding. It would take months!
Fantastic narration of a story from one of my most beloved authors! Thank you!

A classic "body horror" tale that chilled me when I first read it, decades ago. And a tragedy, too: Hodgson evokes great sympathy for the castaways' cruel fate and their altruistic, self-imposed exile. The sound effects were amazingly horrid. Wonderful adaptation.

Good job, Jasper! A William Hope Hodgson story made scary. I once purchased a book of his collected stories. After the third story I could no longer read it and unable to sell it sent it to a thrift store.

Hi Jared! Yes, I know what you mean. Out of WHH's work, this one really stood out for me. Edwardian "body horror" - Ridley Scott's 'Alien' and John Carpenter's 'The Thing' way before the fact.

When the man first spoke in the darkness and mentioned the light, the story started ringing a bell...

You took the opportunity to employ some convincing regional and character voices, whilst retaining the balance of narrative reading style. I have listened to your work before, and the technique and range, if I've listened in order of prod, grows all the time. A mic will pick up the slightest fault of intonation a live performance forgives.
