I try to play fair and record only PUBLIC DOMAIN texts or texts that are old and obscure and out-of-print. If I record a story it's because I like it and want to bring it to other people's attention. If you're someone's literary estate contact me and I'll take the video down.
*If you hate what I do, or hate me or the world in general, how about NOT commenting? Just an idea. Try it.

"The Waits" by L.P. Hartley | Ghost stories for Christmas | Audio narration
Sitting down to dinner on Christmas Eve, the Marriner family are pleasantly surprised when Christmas “waits” pay them a visit, singing carols at their door. But when they refuse Mr. Marriner’s money the family begins to wonder what they want.
This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “THE WAITS” by L. P. Hartley (1961).

This was wonderfully done. I love that line "he was quite unaware that the morning papers decided his opinions for the day". It's so true that we don't truly appreciate what we have in life until it is taken away. Enjoyed this Jasper. ❤🌟
Excellently creepy... I'd rather hear your rendition than read it... Faked friends intrigue me, am thinking of The Shining... so polite too, "Thank you, Mrs Torrance.." better than a real kid!
Oh EXCELLENT!
phantastic story on my favorite theme: plagiarism. no one composes their own dreams..
Excellent
I hated this.
Thanks. Irrelevant though 🙂
ALL honeymoons are strange 👰
@@earthcat Never had one myself. We just went on holiday instead 😁
Nigel Kneale - a huge favorite (especial The Stone Tape). Thank you!
Wow, that was a good one!
What a wonderfully interesting story. You narrated it beautifully ❤
@mamamoomin Thank you 😊
Great story and narration.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent narration of another intriguing story, knowing if they ate that food they'd be staying there forever.
Wonderfully chilling. Your stories are adding so much to this Christmas season!
Glad you like them!
Just got in from walking my cat, into bed with flannel sheets, a nice contrast to the 48 degree outside weather, and i get to cozy up with a classic spook story. I'm a sucker for the type of story that goes like: "paranormal things are happening to regular Joe\Josephine in their home" Thanks, Jasper.
I realize you posted this quite a while ago, but that doesn't make it any less worthy of praise. It’s infinitely compelling, thematically fascinating, and of course, wonderfully read. Thank you!
@@Stratollac Thank you kindly 🙏
Thankyou that was very well done I actually have an ash tree in my garden Ugly bloody thing 😅
I love Christmas stories!! The voice its very good
What a wonderful, twist ending!
We’re being spoiled!! And very grateful for it. 🙏
What a brilliant telling!
as always... it was most enjoyable!
Poor Armitage, his idea was rather a clever one!
Even Oberon Rd will pale in comparison to heaven.
One of the few voices on YT I can not just tolerate but enjoy! Excellent once again!
Thanks for listening! 😊
Is Mr. Marriner a CEO by any chance?
Great job as always, Jasper!
Keep on bustin em out my good sir!! 👍 luv em ❤
Splendid yarn and wonderfully read
@@davidcolley7714 Thank you so much 👍
There's always that one guest that ruins the party ...
Just in case anyone else was curious about the phrase Auto-da-fé mentioned in the story: An auto-da-fé (/ˌɔːtoʊdəˈfeɪ, ˌaʊt-/ AW-toh-də-FAY, OW-; from Portuguese auto de fé) or Spanish: auto de fe ([ˈawto ðe ˈfe]) meaning 'act of faith'; was the ritual of public penance, carried out between the 15th and 19th centuries, of condemned heretics and apostates imposed by the Spanish, Portuguese, or Mexican Inquisition as punishment and enforced by civil authorities. Its most extreme form was death by burning. (thank you Wikipedia!)
Exquisitely performed and orchestrated. Every time I listen to one of the podcasts from Encrypted Horror, I am absolutely blown away by all of the special audio effects, the music, the different voices, the works. It's all just so well done right down to the last detail. This is so much more than a podcast, it's professional audio theater. The way these are done, it makes one feel like you're actually there and part of the story, wow! Thank you so much for creating these!
@@ancientelectrons Cripes, this is going back a bit 😔. I remember I ended up recording the whole thing twice (because my mic hadn't connected properly first time...a rookie error) and gave myself a sore throat doing that croaky voice for so long 😄
@@EnCryptedHorror You should do a video explaining all the things you do to create these wonderful podcasts. 🙂
Love this story. Your narration of it is, as usual, superb. Thank you

Just from your narration I knew this one wouldn't end well! You are the gift that keeps on giving!!
Excellent ❤
Another fantastic tale of creeping dread. Thank You!
My American wife heard me listening to this and she said you have a marvelous voice. I couldn’t agree more. Please keep the stories coming, I’ve almost been through your entire playlist. As someone that studied to do narrations, I admire your talent. An expat in Florida.
@@jeremypearson6852 You can study to do narrations?? Also...Florida sounds like a nice place to be right now. I've had to bust out the thermal socks...🥶
Ask not for whom the bell tolls... Mmwa ha ha ha. Brilliant Mr Lestrange! I think that it's very clear that you competely nailed this one like a shadow to the wall. Audio Noir perfection. 🙇🙇🙇
I've really gotten into these Christmas ghost stories. What a great tradition. And with you doing the narration it's even better! Thank you Jasper❤
Thanks Jasper, you’ve been working hard lately. I like this author, he’s a rum old cove!
I really loved this story, thank you so much for sharing it with us!
@@AncientelectronsO Discovering these stories is such a joy. I read quite widely for this channel and obviously a lot of the stories are quite similar, but every now and then you find something like this one...and it's almost completely forgotten, published in a newspaper a century ago!
Looking forward to this thank you Jasper
AHA! After my second listen, it made sense. Yes, I also read the comments after my first listen to make more sense of it!! This one definitely gets your imagination purring. Thank you SO much oh mighty master of storytelling 😁 and Merry Christmas to you & yours.
Ooh, that was properly gripping! 🙂♥️
Another wonderful narration and story. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into these for us all to enjoy! ❤❤
Discovered this gem last Christmas. A pure delight read delightfully! Thank you. 😊
The narration, the music, the eerie atmosphere, the sound effects, the marvellous singing, the artwork. All top notch. One can only imagine how much work goes into each story. It's very much appreciated, Jasper. Thanks again for the best channel on YT.
Oh, how divine. Thank you for your Guinness-like voice.
