"The Lily-White Boy" by Adam Macqueen | Haunted Tales | Read by Jasper L'Estrange
With their son away at university, a couple’s discovery of some old photographs and letters in the attic sets in motion a disturbing chain of events.
This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “THE LILY-WHITE BOY” from the book “Haunted Tales” by Adam Macqueen (2024). This story is copyright © Adam Macqueen and read with the author’s permission.
“Haunted Tales” by Adam Macqueen is a collection of supernatural stories that were originally sent in place of Christmas cards to the author’s friends and family. Collected and published by Swift Press, this excellent volume is described as being “a collection in the grand tradition of ghost stories - to be read by the fire in the depths of winter”.
“Haunted Tales” is available to buy in bookshops and online. For more information, visit the publisher’s website: swiftpress.com/book/haunted-tales/
Adam Macqueen is a novelist and journalist and writer of non-fiction. Visit the author’s website: adammacq.wordpress.com/
JASPER SAYS: "This is a marvellous collection of spooky stories, with a good mixture of settings modern, old and even ancient, and each with a dark twist in the tale. Happily, all the stories are briskly told and finishing one leaves you hungry for the next (always a good sign). If you asked me to pick my favourites, I'd go for 'The Hawthorn Tree', 'The Old Folk', 'Panic Room'...and this one!"
You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to an upcoming episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem, my bonus show for paying UA-cam channel members and Patreon supporters.
CREATOR’S NOTE: These recordings contain sound effects and music because that’s what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. As you will see from the comments, a lot of the listeners also like it. If it’s not your thing, please feel free to listen to the many other narrators who are voice-only. I’m sure they’ll be glad to hear from you.

Thank you 🙏
Wow this was amazing. Thank you! The ending was pure poetry.
I thought so.
Lovely stuff.. Goodnight EnCrypted Horror.. 😴💤💤👌🏻..
Superb story, superbly read. Thank you.
You had me on the edge of my seat with this one. You have an uncanny ability to capture even twist and turn in the story.
Hmm...interesting idea and well read (as always) but I felt sorry for Pauline. Even if her new husband was not 'in love' with her, he undertook responsibilities, such as kindness and loyalty towards her, when he married her (and yes, other responsibilities which need not be specified here!) May Sinclair gives us permission to feel no sympathy for her by making her a 'lustful' woman with a dodgy divorce in her past - but her husband didn't know that and so had no excuse.
@@katyvdb5993 Yes, very much of its time as pertaining to attitudes to marriage and particularly divorce.
Thank you 😊
Thank you 😊
Wonderful. Curiosity killed the cat, as it were. You read marvellously. ❤
I love the music in this one.
Excellent excellent excellent! The tale the narration all EXCELLENT!
A new story to me, very atmospheric, beautifully read, and an unexpected ending. Thank you for creating these audio books.
Jasper, you are a master of your trade! Thank you
Brilliant. Truly.
Hope your feeling better after the bit of hate you've recieved recently. Maybe a trip to the country will do you some good. 😂
@@CREddie Haha, indeed. Thing is, it wasn't really hate directed at me (those people just get muted). It was meanness against the author who has allowed me to read their work, and it just struck me as rude.
@EnCryptedHorror keep your chin up.
As per usual a fantastic job of narration. But the story left alot to be desired. It was as if the professoer must be punished for being self contained. Why? While he might not of loved as we know it nor was he cruel or treat people badly and his work did benefit mankind. So? Nor was it all in his head as the priest and the bird could evidence.
Someone else made this point somewhere in the comments. I think it is not so much that they must be punished for being self-contained, rather that they are punishing themselves by repressing their love (for one another, platonic or otherwise) due to their own worldviews (the one's scientific rationalism, the other's religion). The thing that torments them is in some way a product of their self-denial... ...is how I read the story.
The American accent you adopted reminded me of someone. It took me almost until the end to remember who - Vincent Price!
Ive loved this unnerving tale for decades. There was also a Night Gallery w a similiar theme, watching a painting change in tandem with the moving finger of fate lol Anyways, great narration❤subbed
I have always loved the novels of Howard Spring. This was a real treat as I'd never come across it before. A very eerie story and conjures up and aspect of Cornwall underlying the beauty.
Oh gosh I just realized I've heard seen read this story before. And found it horrifying without ghosts ghouls or murdering madmen.
Wait. While he's strangling the first the other two patiently await their turn? Makes sense. Not.
@@AretiSpyropoulos Other two? I thought it was one other. I'm not sure it goes into the specifics of who was strangled in what order, or how, or whether one was tied up etc.
Best reading ever !
Creepy! Thank you 🌞
Wonderful to know the traditional ghost story lives, or should that be dies?😮
When he said "Bailey, from Queens" I assumed he was from New York...
Okay... Second listen and I like it even more. Regardless of whether everyone "gets", the story. Your production of it Jasper is impeccable. Voices, timing, atmosphere, sound effects all work together to create this world. Thank you for the pathos you eminated through your narration. In an aside note, I once lived with man from Sheffield who swore that he could tell if a person was dead just by looking at a photograph of them. He was surprised when I explained how very unusual that was. "Can't you see the dark halo around their head?!", he would ask. I tested him once with some old family photos. He was right every time. He was a miserable fellow a lot of the time and Death came to collect him earlier than was right; just stopped his heart in the middle of running a lecture, I was told. I can't help but think that they had known each other for years.💀.
This is one of the creepiest stories I’ve ever heard. I started telling the guy to run as soon as he got to the first inn! Very chilling. Great narration as always. Thanks! ❤
This is the best narration i have heard of this story. You really did it justice with your production style and voice. One of my favorite non-Sherlock Doyle stories.
loved it, thank you
Yep, leave them photos up there. A great modern horror brilliantly read. Thanks Jasper.
Hauntingly creepy building to an awesome climax. Wonderful!
Who doesn't love a bit of Huge Walpole at Christmas - well, post Christmas...you know what I mean!
Such a great story, and very emotional. Perfectly told, King Jasper. I'd like to hear more from Adam 👍
Thank you 😊
Most enjoyable narration, of a truly gripping tale 😊
oh this was a great one. thank you for the great narration!
This is such an imaginative story, wish he'd done loads more.
Genius 🌟
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ That’s for the pagan influence! Love that kind of stuff, absolutely fascinating! Ever think about writing spiritual fiction like Paolo Coelho? I believe you could do it! You may have heard of “The alchemist” but you must listen to “Brida” or being British you must listen to the Portobello which I think it is called….. I really would love to hear your opinion and the alchemist is so short but everybody had heard/read it. Have you heard of “The Celestine prophecy” by James Redfield? You simply Must but it’s when he gets to Peru that it really gets uncommonly great and I usually only LOVE stuff set in the western world and preferably good old England! Irish blood, English heart……. Where have I heard that before?! Forgive my babbling Jasper and I really am sorry for forgetting about my favourite channels, a symptom of survivors guilt apparently! I have had enough therapy to heal Freud! Analyse this Mr Freud, I prefer Jung (Carl) ok I am shutting the F*** up!) I know you will probably delete this but please read it first 🙏🪷🌟
This is officially my favourite paranormal fiction channel! When I get paid I will definitely make a financial contribution . ❤♥️❤️
Thanks!
Thank you 🙏
Most welcome! Just a wee bit to show my gratitude!@@EnCryptedHorror
Perfection. From beginning to end!
I remember my sister telling me that story years ago when I was a kid. It’s a good one. The triumph over tyranny.
Great narration as usual. But couldn't accept the premise of a wicked saucepan try as I might.
@@AretiSpyropoulos I pick stories if I like something about them - the dialogue, a funny bit, a good location. If I stuck to stories I thought were 100% perfect I think I'd have only 20 videos.
16k views, I think about a quarter of them are mine, one my go to episodes for bedtime if I don't find something new that appeals.
Yes! He should have many more subscribers.
