13:03 I actually have an interesting theory for this one cause, if you look at the type matchups for steel, it has 3 weaknesses, and 4 types damage it normally, *everything* else is resisted by it. This makes me think that not only were the types it was weak to taken into account, but also the types that damage it normally. Water erodes steel, ghost just straight up fly through it, and electric travels through it. None of these matchups actually deal damage to steel itself but it is able to bypass it's defensive capabilities. It's a pretty interesting typing all together!
Although for those of you wondering about dark type this one could actually be several reasons. One is that dark is more, special based or taken more literally, like darkness seeps through or something like that. One thing I like to think of it though is that while steel types do everything to maximize their defense, dark types (the most commonly seen evil types) play dirty and attack the blind spots of whatever steel type they're attacking. Like a steel coated knight having blind spots in their armor that you could exploit, or like bringing a screwdriver to a robot fight. I don't know if this is the actual reason but if it is it's pretty cool.
@@permberd4185 Dark and Ghost dealt half damage to Steel up until Gen 6. It was just for balance reasons with the introduction of Fairy that it was changed.
@@permberd4185The reason for steel not being weak against electric is due to its property of conductor as the electric current (AC not so.sure about dc) flows only through the surface of conductor not through it so Pokemon can't really feel the current whereas water is an ionic conductor , electric current travels through the water in form of ions so basically the current is flowing the Pokemon and that's really damaging
I’m surprised dragon was the winner for special attack, but then I remembered legendaries exist and not only are there many dragon legendaries, most of them have very high special attack stats.
My guess for bug being strong against dark is that bugs have a lot of religious and spiritual and just cultural significance in Japan and a lot of Asia, actually. So since the dark type includes a lot of “evil” or “shady and underhanded” sorts of Pokémon, it probably ties into bugs warding off evil and being good luck and such.
Well that's a good theory...........I was used to think that bugs are strong against dark is because bugs can see in dark also and moreover bugs aren't even weak in dark places whether they can be in their full potential while being in dark places😅 Well in konw that it is so lame........but that was my theory on this type matchup 😅🤣
@@Sankalp-kt9uz this one doesn't make sense. the dark type isn't actually themed around the concept of darkness, as in japan the type is actually translated to the "evil" type, so the type effectivenesses have nothing to do with the actual idea of "darkness"
To add to the tcg type differences. Dark in the VG is considered Darkness in the TCG. Also fairy was removed from the game to help with blanace. Being a TCG having more types makes it more difficult to add support and counters to each one of those types. Being that rotation is a thing and only a certain amount of cards are released every 2-4 months. It makes doing this difficult.
yeah, there's even an easy way to tell the difference, ironically it didn't make total sense till gen 4 but, basically if the type was dragon, or a type that eevee evolved into, it was special
Really? Dark doesn't feel at all like a special type. Even looking at the moves 10 are special and 33 physical, First special dark move was in gen IV when there were already 14 Physical dark moves
the work you always put in this videos always impress me... Also, its also amazing how GOOD Tyranitar was despite its massive amounts of weaknesses throughout the generations...
The move bite has quite the track record of being changed around. In gen 1 it was physical because it was actually a NORMAL type move at the time Then it was DARK type when the type was introduced in gen 2 and it was made a special attack as a result and it kept this until the physical special split in gen 4 making it physical once again. Bite is the only move to not only switch its typing but also how the attack itself was from physical to special then back to physical
For number 18, I always thought Bug>Dark made sense for 2 reasons: 1: Bugs uses their antennas to sense their surroundings so many bugs that work in the dark who are nocturnal made a lot of sense to me. 2: Dark type is considered "Evil type" in Japan. Let's say a person comes across an ant hill or a bee's nest and tries to destroy their home following them succeeding it. What happens? Well...the bugs retaliate and attack the person they rightfully view as an enemy. Those 2 reasons made my belief that Bug types being stronger than Dark made a lot more sense to me.
fighting, flying and rock Is a perfect circle. if your OK with repeating the core 3 then grass, poison and ground also works well; maybe that's what Poipoles trio is 😉.
Now I wanna see someone design an Ultra Beast region. There's tons of creative potential that the Ultra Beasts offer due to having totally different design conventions.
Poison/Dark works great, we've had a couple now. Poison and ground not so much. Poison types are weak against ground types, and ground types don't resist other ground types.
Here’s a type fact that makes me a bit upset: in the Johto games there is a gym leader or elite four member for every type with one exception. Ground doesn’t have one since the previous ground leader was replaced by Blue
2:44 I actually knew this one and it’s pretty funny A Pokémon with every type is 4x weak to rock, 4x weak to Freeze Dry, and 16x weak to Thousand Arrows
If we're counting moves that are only strong under certain conditions, it's actually ghost the new Last Respects upon fainting 100 pokemon (not obtainable in competitive, with revives) and capping at 5,050 base power, but 6 stacked Rage Fist not counting revives hits 350 if we aren't counting non competitive formats
@@plazmurr You don't need revives to reach the 5050 bp on Last Respects, since Rabsca gets Skill Swap meaning if it gets the Harvest ability + Leppa Berry it can infinitely revive. Without the infinite Leppa Berries, you can still get more than 4 Revival Blessings, through Sleep Talk

(Similar to moves that always crit not quite having their listed base power but also ignoring unfavorable stat changes, and effectively not having a chance to "crit" above their normal output)
I think it's neat that Ice has a move that's specifically super effective against a type that Ice isn't super effective against normally. Freeze Dry is a fun move
I'm slightly surprised flying mons are on avg faster than electric types, given that their whole shtick since season 1 (electrode) is "I AM SPEED", which hasn't changed with Regieleki being added to the top of that list.
Electric being strong against Water can be easily explained when you think that, arguably with the exception of Vaporeon, no Water-type Pokémon is actually made of Water, but they all live in water. They’d easily die if a lightning hits the water around them. On the other hand, most Steel-type Pokémon (especially Steelix, Skarmory, and Magneton in Gen 2) are actually made of metal, so ideally they would not be damaged by electricity. An argument can be made for Pokémon like Scizor who have a metal armor, but in general I think it’s a good idea to have Electric not being strong against Steel
In Gen 1, Pokémon who match the typing of the move they're being attacked with, that have a secondary effect, cannot be affected by it. Just like Lick for Ghost-types, the same is true for Normal-types with Body Slam, for example.
For the fire 48x trivia, you can also give the attacking pokemon the ability flash fire to increase the damage of their fire type moves by 1.5x after being hit by a fire move (probably hidden power fire).
I've heard that Dark being weak to Bug is a nod to Kamen Rider. Dark is known as the Evil type in Japanese and the costumes of the heroes in Kamen Rider are themed after insects, making "Evil" weak to "Bug".
I think the reason why bug is super effective against dark comes from the idea that dark type is just evil psychic type. And steel taking neutral damage to electric is terrible, but arguing for it would mean I'd fight to make empolion even less viable, and I can't do that.
The typing of the Sinnoh starters creats a lot of weirdness. Such as Empoleon taking neutral damage from both other starter's main types but 2x from their secondaries. Torterra can hit both other starters for 2x but doesn't actually resist the water starter. (Especially since as a bird Empoleon gets peck & drill peck to hit Torterra for 2x) And Infernape is 2x weak to both other starters and can hit them both for 2x. This weird type matchup is almost like if they were all part dragon type to break the normal "rock, paper, scissors" of the starters.
@Jason Reed I thought that was what they were going for, though. Making Empoleon a tank unless it is in near any match up with the opponent having a super effective move, Infernape that but offensively, and tortera a mix between the two. And making it so that clearly there is no bias between which starter is better. I say that while damn well knowing they had one other fire type besides the starter in the first game they were in.
Bug is strong against dark because, in Japan, superheroes are heavily associated with the Kamen Riders, which are often bug themed. So since superheroes beat evil, bugs are strong against dark. This is also the reason for fighting being strong against it, since fighting types are 'honorable warriors'.
There's other ways to make Flygon stand out that don't involve swapping the fantastic Ground for the low-grade Bug. Just shuffle Flygon's stats around until it's a dedicated special attacker. Then give the Bug/Dragon combo to Yanmega, for whom it's actually an upgrade.
man, i was looking to see if anyone else caught the grass poison ground triangle before i comment it. well congrats, you beat me to it. also steel deals neutral dmg to fight
3:22 I have an idea for fire/fairy. Basically, fairy types are all lovey dovey and passionate and stuff, right? Two words: burning passion. Also, Ice Poison could be frozen poison. The rest aren't too hard to imagine
I think I figured out why steel isn’t weak to electric. Steel is supposed to represent metal as a whole, and while all metals conduct electricity some of them are significantly better conductors than others like Gold and Copper
Fire gets the highest multiplier, but the highest damaging move in the game is Ghost type. Even with a x48 boost no Fire type move would reach the power of super effective Last Respects.
13:00 Dark being weak to Bug is a reference to Kamen Rider. In Japan, the Dark type is known as the Evil type, the Kamen Rider fights evil, and the Kamen Rider’s design is based off of a grasshopper and various other bugs
13:05 to be true, there's 2 point on that. true, metal does conduct eletricity, but also, when thinking about metal being, they would feed on eletricity so....kinda make sense not being super
There used to be a type of card in the TCG that had Dual Types, like a Fairy/Water Auzumaril with a slash to divide the colors on the card. Bonus: that card was half shiny in the card art.
Poison>Grass>Ground is a perfect Pokemon type trio that you missed. Poison is supereffective against and resists Grass. Grass is supereffective against and resists Ground. Ground is supereffective against and resists Poison.
Steel strong against fairy is also a reference to old folklore and poetry, where "cold iron" is supposed to either ward off or be resistant to the powers of the fey.
Reason for Dark type weakness for pscychics, is because dark types are known as evil type in japan, so corrupting your mind would be painful, kind like shadow priest in warcraft.
Everyone always says the electric steel thing, but steel should be immune to electric. Think about it, steel conducts electricity, it doesn’t get damaged by it. And no this logic doesn’t apply to water, because water types are typically not just made of water, they’re like fish and turtles and stuff that would be killed by electricity. Steel on the other hand is often just things made of metal like bronzong or meta gross or magnemite that wouldn’t care about electricity
I didn't know much about these type but am so glad I watched this video. Cause it sure as heck was very informative, and just so good :D Hope you had a great day
Also from I remember back then people told stories on folklore where people believed to keep fairies away was to use iron or metal items around the house, probably why fairy was weak to steel is because of old folklore.
I think gamefreak should make a dual typed move called “frost bite”, which is an ice type move but does fire damage as well (I know to some degree that wouldn’t make sense but it would be cool) or at least burns the target
Fact 9: The Kalos starters become super effective against their weaker types with the Grass/Fire/Water being complimented by Fighting/Psychic/Dark respectively Fact 13: The Eeveelutions are a great way to remember which types were Physical/Special. This includes the Dragon-Eeveelution we never got that would be weak to Sylveon
I'm pretty sure Steven is a rock collector and he travels around looking for rare stones (hence the name Steven Stone), and his team represents that with Steel Rock and Ground types
Bug may have many flaws, but those Ground and Fighting resists are lowkey way valuable. We've seen from the Bug/Steel combo that Bug works very well in tandem with something resistant to Rock. What I'd like see is a strong Bug/Ground type Pokémon, as it's the only pairing of Bug with a Rock resist that doesn't create a double weakness. Also, Flygon shouldn't be Bug/Dragon. Yanmega is a far more suitable candidate by being a prehistoric dragonfly _and_ it wouldn't be hardcore nerfed by the type change like Flygon would. Because you'd have to be stupid to pick Bug over Ground.
6:00 I think Pokemon starters should continue having type triangles in a way that the primary type is weak but secondary type is strong. Like it did in Gen 4. For example, there's a Fire/Dark type and then there's a Water/Ghost type. Here Fire is weak to Water but Dark is strong against Ghost.
wait what...? Immune to 7?I thought ghost was Immune to fighting! steel being super effective against steel type would make sense but then that's just buffing the only type that has 1 weakness (dual types not included). I want gen 10 to contain trio typed Pokémon and loads of dual type moves.
It's funny how Bug is one of the worst types to be but if a pokemon has a 4X weakness to bug, their chance of getting used in competitive singles gets tanked lol
Houndoom does that better, plus it has Fire STAB and is one of the very few Fire types to learn Solar Beam before Gen 4 gave it to almost all Fire types.
Type triangle: Ghost, Dark, Fighting It's not as perfect as the others, but can fit in the same way. It's also on the current starter trio as secondary types
In Gen 1, Bug/Grass is the worst type combo. Yes I know it's one less than Ice/Rock, but back then it has 3 4x weaknesses due to poison being strong against bug.
At 13:05, I think it does make sense that steel isn't weak to electric while water is, because water is only a moderate conductor of electricity (needs to have ions in it), while metals are excellent conductors. Metals have less resistance, so less of the electricity's energy is imparted into it, so it does less damage
To my knowledge it’s a pretty common thing in a lot of fairy/fae mythologies that they’re weak to iron, iron shavings or powder being used to chase them off or keep them away from things etc… makes sense they’d be weak to steel

I would like for Psychic to be SE against Normal, Normal SE against Dark, Poison SE against Bug, Bug SE on Fairy, Fairy NVE on Bug, Fire SE on Fairy, Poison SE on Water, Water NVE on Ice, Fairy NVE on Grass, Steel SE on Grass, Electric SE on Steel

I don’t care if bug types suck, they have some good designs
Heracross is good
Escavalier lookin baller, but for a more subdued design Pinsir is a winner for me.
Volcarona is a pseudo legendary type design
Of course Scizor, excadrill, golisopod. Bug type also have great moves like the iconic U-turn. Bug buzz can hit through substitutes, Leech Life, First Impression. Tail Glow and Quiver Dance are one of the best setup moves to ever exist. The sticky web is also powerful.
@@leyoshivenere350excadrill isn’t a bug type
@@RabblesTheBinx yeah, it probably was just for balance reasons. Still though, it's kinda nice that the changes still make sense contextually.
@j.d.714 steel being immune to steel would actually be pretty dang interesting.
Heroes in Japan used bug-themed costumes back when Gen 2 was released, that's why it is super effective
@@-YaRR- Bug beating dark is literally just a Kamen Rider reference
Well that's a good theory...........I was used to think that bugs are strong against dark is because bugs can see in dark also and moreover bugs aren't even weak in dark places whether they can be in their full potential while being in dark places😅
Well in konw that it is so lame........but that was my theory on this type matchup 😅🤣

Correction: All Dark Moves used to be special not physical
He might have meat ghost
yeah, there's even an easy way to tell the difference, ironically it didn't make total sense till gen 4 but, basically if the type was dragon, or a type that eevee evolved into, it was special
Really? Dark doesn't feel at all like a special type. Even looking at the moves 10 are special and 33 physical, First special dark move was in gen IV when there were already 14 Physical dark moves
@@magnusnord8353 Well it was haven’t U played GSS or RSE
@Magnus Nord I don't get it either but it was in fact special.
In old folklore, Fairies were burned by iron. Maleficent actually (surprisingly) portrays this correctly.
the work you always put in this videos always impress me...
Also, its also amazing how GOOD Tyranitar was despite its massive amounts of weaknesses throughout the generations...
The move bite has quite the track record of being changed around.
In gen 1 it was physical because it was actually a NORMAL type move at the time
Then it was DARK type when the type was introduced in gen 2 and it was made a special attack as a result and it kept this until the physical special split in gen 4 making it physical once again.
Bite is the only move to not only switch its typing but also how the attack itself was from physical to special then back to physical
For 4, it's actually immune to 8 types, as you forgot to list Fighting, which Ghost is also immune to
For number 18, I always thought Bug>Dark made sense for 2 reasons:
1: Bugs uses their antennas to sense their surroundings so many bugs that work in the dark who are nocturnal made a lot of sense to me.
It could also be a Kamen rider reference
I just thought fireflies
fighting, flying and rock Is a perfect circle. if your OK with repeating the core 3 then grass, poison and ground also works well; maybe that's what Poipoles trio is 😉.
Now I wanna see someone design an Ultra Beast region. There's tons of creative potential that the Ultra Beasts offer due to having totally different design conventions.
Fairy fighting and steel work too
@@LandOfTheEnigma it almost works...fighting isn't resistant to steel 🤷♂️
@@OniBoiXD oh what? That's stupid
I remember thinking gengar was imuned to psychic moves until I accidentally used one on it and found out it was super efective
For number 5 I would also like to add Fairy Dragon. It did exist with Mega Altaria, but now that megas are gone it does not exist anymore
2:44 I actually knew this one and it’s pretty funny
A Pokémon with every type is 4x weak to rock, 4x weak to Freeze Dry, and 16x weak to Thousand Arrows
For 19: Normal does have the strongest move, but its technically not Explosion. Spit Up goes to 300 BP after 3 Stockpile
@@plazmurr Oh yeah Last Respects is a thing, huh? I guess if Spit Up counts then that has to count as well...
Also, i think it says everything about me as a fan that i completely forgot about the shiny new moves but almost instantly remembred one of the most obscure ones. Heck, for a brief moment i even thought about Trump Card before remembering that that one only goes up to 190 BP.
I mean power trip has 860 base power with every stat maximized.
@@davidtrottier7066and its special attack counter part in Stored power is the same.
But explosion is very dangerous with its effective 500BP for 0 setup, its listed at 250 but it halves the defense of the recipient which effectively doubles its base power.
I believe the interaction between Fairy and steel is related in that you can weaken a fairy's power by trapping it in a steel cage.
I'm slightly surprised flying mons are on avg faster than electric types, given that their whole shtick since season 1 (electrode) is "I AM SPEED", which hasn't changed with Regieleki being added to the top of that list.
When it comes to perfect type triangles, there's also Grass, Poison, Ground, but it still reuses one type.
DLC epic reveal be like: welcome our new bug/dragon type, Dududunsparce.
(Especially since as a bird Empoleon gets peck & drill peck to hit Torterra for 2x)
And Infernape is 2x weak to both other starters and can hit them both for 2x.
I always assumed it is strong against dark is reference to how many heroes themed after insects there are
Bug is strong against dark because, in Japan, superheroes are heavily associated with the Kamen Riders, which are often bug themed. So since superheroes beat evil, bugs are strong against dark. This is also the reason for fighting being strong against it, since fighting types are 'honorable warriors'.
The fact they haven't made a bug dragon a type but made flygon a ground dragon while garchomp was all ready in the region is very upsetting
Trios:
1. Grass Fire Water
2. Fighting Steel Fairy
3. Rock Fire Steel
4. Rock Flying Fighting
5. Ground Poison Grass
man, i was looking to see if anyone else caught the grass poison ground triangle before i comment it. well congrats, you beat me to it.

5:11 We have got starters that are electric and normal types being Pikachu (starter in Yellow and Lets Go Pikachu) and Eevee (in Lets Go Eevee).

12:42 Fairy is weak to steel because in European folklore iron can harm fairies just by touching them.
Fun fact, there is a normal/steel type Pokémon, but it’s only in pokestar studios, its name is F-00.

Also, Ice Poison could be frozen poison. The rest aren't too hard to imagine
I think I figured out why steel isn’t weak to electric. Steel is supposed to represent metal as a whole, and while all metals conduct electricity some of them are significantly better conductors than others like Gold and Copper
(13:21) Ghost also can flee a wild battle regardless of speed or level.
Isn'f Lokix based on Kamen Rider

There used to be a type of card in the TCG that had Dual Types, like a Fairy/Water Auzumaril with a slash to divide the colors on the card. Bonus: that card was half shiny in the card art.

Poison>Grass>Ground is a perfect Pokemon type trio that you missed.
Poison is supereffective against and resists Grass.
Grass is supereffective against and resists Ground.
Ground is supereffective against and resists Poison.
I feel nostalgic watching this video. Idk why
Steel strong against fairy is also a reference to old folklore and poetry, where "cold iron" is supposed to either ward off or be resistant to the powers of the fey.
2:32 Actually, it'd be immune to *eight* types since Ghost is also immune to Fighting
Reason for Dark type weakness for pscychics, is because dark types are known as evil type in japan, so corrupting your mind would be painful, kind like shadow priest in warcraft.
Roost doesn't make a Pokemon typeless, it actually turns them into Normal types
Edit: It only turned them typeless in Gen 4, I just checked
Roost gets rid of the flying type, not turn them into normal types.
If a poke is pure flying, it becomes typeless (grounded). Since all flying types before gen V had a 2nd type, they would never become typeless
@@ominoussouls1 it was either gen 4 or the pokemon used roost second or they had a ring target
@@Mrdonjuliothewicked if they are pure flying they become normal
Everyone always says the electric steel thing, but steel should be immune to electric. Think about it, steel conducts electricity, it doesn’t get damaged by it. And no this logic doesn’t apply to water, because water types are typically not just made of water, they’re like fish and turtles and stuff that would be killed by electricity. Steel on the other hand is often just things made of metal like bronzong or meta gross or magnemite that wouldn’t care about electricity
5:50 umm actually

Hope you had a great day
5:33 - Steel, Fairy, Fighting
Also from I remember back then people told stories on folklore where people believed to keep fairies away was to use iron or metal items around the house, probably why fairy was weak to steel is because of old folklore.
I think gamefreak should make a dual typed move called “frost bite”, which is an ice type move but does fire damage as well (I know to some degree that wouldn’t make sense but it would be cool) or at least burns the target
Ice Burn does that, but it's exclusive to Kyruem White.
Grass poison and ground is a perfect triangle. It was used in Pokémon XD in the bingo games
Fact 9:
The Kalos starters become super effective against their weaker types with the Grass/Fire/Water being complimented by Fighting/Psychic/Dark respectively

Weird question:
If you can become typeless, and struggle is typeless...does it mean you hit a struggle with stabb?
I don't think typeless is a registered typing, so I would assume it wouldn't add STAB, but I could be wrong. That's an intresting question!
5:44 fairy, fighting and steel

Bug is likely strong against Dark because of Kamen Rider and shows like it
At 5:00 why do Eevee and Pikachu not count as starters?
Type triangle:
Ghost, Dark, Fighting
It's not as perfect as the others, but can fit in the same way. It's also on the current starter trio as secondary types
How about Fighting, Ice, Flying for perfect type circle?
Not exactly perfect, Ice does not resist Flying.
And fighting does not resist ice
13:00 I remember reading somewhere that Bug beats Dark because in Japan, many superheroes resemble bugs. Stuff like Super Sentai or Kamen Rider.
9:23
Ice/Rock is worse, because it has the same number of weaknesses and 2 double weaknesses.
5:05 Ahem Pikachu and Eevee Are Electric and Normal Type
And ice cauz glaceon
But only in 1-2 games
Not to mention that if a special attacker with the typing of fire and holding a charcoal hit with stab, it would do a whole lot more damage.
Dark type moves were special, not physical. Remember, the special types were Dragon plus the Eeveelution types.
To my knowledge it’s a pretty common thing in a lot of fairy/fae mythologies that they’re weak to iron, iron shavings or powder being used to chase them off or keep them away from things etc… makes sense they’d be weak to steel
14:22 the ??? Just meant the Pokémon\move is typeless it wasn’t its own thing
A bit of a funny note on the new split. Despite Dark being a special type back then, all of the moves that existed in gens 2 and 3 would become physical Gen IV and forwards.
2:09, I feel like legendaries and mythical are really boosting dragon for those stats. I have nothing backing this up, it’s just a hunch. Excluding legends and mythics, I think normal would have highest hp. I don’t know though.
