It is not about aesthetics people dont like numpads because they look nice, if anything the 10keyless keyboards look nicer.. but it is the **UTILITY** even if you are jobless and dont do taxes and whatnot and just live on your mom's basement playing games a numpad is useful for calculating some ingame stuff on a calculator app or a cheat engine or even as RTS macros etc.. As for your attempt it is good but it still is missing a sysrq button (people know it also as print screen button but it doesnt only do that) home and end are useful too but mostly to writers and people that are into consoles and linux in general. But a major thing missing from all these custom keyboards (well almost all) that cost so much but still miss it is a simple volume/zoom doodadroller/knob thingy and some media keys which also most people use or miss if they dont have it anymore.
I really like Nola content. Though if she keeps causing trouble, you may have to let her inspect and sniff things first before you start using them. Rachel and Jun, a Japanese couple with 4 cats, are really good at keeping their cats engaged and generally behaved.
As a numpad person, I am definitely hoping for more of these. Especially budget versions, since not everyone wants to spend 300 bucks ( + switches + keycaps ) to get a good board with a numpad.
maybe you would benefit a lot from buying a mechanical keyboard with a numpad but you might need to use one more usb port of your keyboard doesn't have passthrough
MOAR!!! Thank you for the kitty and numpad content! I use spreadsheets for budgeting and keeping track of stuff in my Minecraft world with my kid, and I have always found the number row incredibly clunky and difficult to use, especially for things like phone numbers. None of the letters are in weird rows like that (yes, I know how that sounds, but imagine all the letters laid out in one line like a piano, and that’s how it feels to me), and having them in a neat cluster makes it SO MUCH easier and more intuitive for typing anything longer than two digits. Biggest reason I got my first keeb was because I missed having a numpad on my MacBook Air tbh.
I love the Nola segments! This might sound silly, but for the longest time I'm avoided getting into keyboard-building because I was afraid (rather, I know) my cats would do the SAME THING with getting in the way, knocking stuff over, ETC...but watching you overcome that and give her love and finish the process all the way makes me feel a lot more like it's possible, and I get to see a cute kitty along the way. Please keep her in :D Thank you for the content!
one thing a lot of cat owners do is get their cats a smaller version of what they're working on, maybe you could make a faux keyboard out of cardboard so your cat gets to be included
Hell yeah! Been loving these Mini 1800/FRL type of boards!!! Hopefully your video can make them more known and saught after because finding them can be a PITA. Especially for wireless versions.
I was really into keyboards some years ago and recently rediscovered the hobby. It's really weird how the keyboard world has kinda reverted back to the spongy/bouncy feel that people originally wanted to get a way from. Also seemingly no one likes clicky switches any more for some reason. MX blues were everyone's favourite after the buckling springs for a while.
As someone using a 96% keyboard for data entry this is totally fine with me. I can always program the F-row on another layer so technically it's not gone, it's just a function key away
I want more! I can't live without a numb pad or the F-row because I work a lot in old Linux programs, and they require both. Great video! Hungry for more.... maybe even... 100% ?
I absolutely LOVE the Nola segments. I would watch your channel anyway, don’t get me wrong, but nothing is ever worse with more kitten. She’s a beautiful cat and deserves a showcase.
The Akko MOD 003 and 004 both have a relatively compact layout with both a number pad AND Function row. Might be worth giving it a look. It IS a bit pingy However.
Good funny comedy hipyo. I want to know what a keyboard filled with blu tack would sound like, preferably an aluminium board with kailh box creams. Any chance we could make that happen?
im on a 69%, lots of programs benefit having the extra keys. also i dont love having the arrow keys packed into a smaller build and 1 69% generally has them with their own/normal place.
What I use most on the "removed row" Print Screen F11 (Full size/windowed) Alt + F4 (Close window) F1 (Help in basically every program written after 1980) But by far "Esc" is the one I use most. If I were to get rid of keys I'd drop page up/page down (the mouse does that better now) and I'd also dump scroll lock and pause.
0-o the keyboard form factor I have been dreaming of!!! I do a lot of data entry work, and life without a num pad is just not something I can do, but I am always wishing for a smaller keyboard footprint
genuinely appreciate this. i've seen so many builds and like 97% of the keyboards are missing the numpad which blows my mind bc while i appreciate enthusiast tastes most of the world is not going to want a 60% keyboard we gonna want our numpads and f row but this is a good compromise....please do more for us normies who want to build a kb like y'all
I feel like if you're going for a numpad you might as well get the Fkeys, since you're probably not short on vertical space on your desk. And then if you don't end up using those keys, swap the keycaps and use them for rebinding.
Wind managed to take their x98 keyboard and make it worse by removing even more important keys. At least the only compromise with the x98, besides the annoying rearrangement of the Print Screen-Page Down block, is having to choose between right super, right ctrl, or the menu key. This one would force me to program the dreaded Fn key (worst idea ever; just make full-sized keyboards).
Smaller with numpad is right in my alley. I travel with my keyboard for business and now travel with Keychron V5 (plastic, so lighter) and is an 1800 format. Nola is a great addition. Sound with foam to me is better.
Pro tip, buy a separate numpad, and then you can buy all the cool keyboards you want. Hell, keychron even makes numpads with knobs, and we all know that more knobs=more better.
The main thing that has prevented me from contracting fancy keyboard disease is the overwhelming preference for smaller keyboards. If I were to make a custom keyboard, I would want MORE keys than the standard 100%. Cram those F keys to get two more, fill the navigation cluster to put two keys on either side of the up arrow and a row of three above that. Chop up the spacebar to had additional function keys.
"Those of you who need a numpad, does this satisfy you" Yes and no. I am a trainee accountant, a keyboard without a numpad is impossible to use but the f row really helps with a number of short cuts I use to speed up my workflow. In your experience would you go full size or a 75%/tkl + numpad with what is currently on offer at the moment?
If it's in your budget, I'd personally go with purchasing a separate numpad. That way you can get the right keyboard for all your preferences, and a numpad that you can pull out & use only when needed. That said, I would love to see Hipyo do some content on various numpad keyboards!
We have a local brand here that has a really interesting keyboard. its basically a TKL keyboard but with the numpad. then they have this 1 key that would change the keys available in the numpad. you can have it work as insert, del, arrow keys etc. and when you need it it can be a numpad with just 1 press of a key. Rakk Ilis is the name of the keyboard.
As someone who uses the function row during MMOs, Minecraft, and general-purpose web-surfing, even with the glorious numpad I still think this wonderful thock machine would just barely slip by me. I could maybe jank up a setup that replaces those keys, but I think I'd rather spend the extra dosh and time building a slightly larger board than guess/checking comfortable finger combos for them.
I remember seeing a keyboard that didn't have any of the keys in between the number pad and the enter key and instead the number pad would function as those keys if you pushed the num lock button. It also had to lay out of the regular arrow keys and other buttons rather than having the bizarre layout that the number pad normally has. To me that still sounds like the better keyboard over this one because you can maintain all the keys next to the space bar like the super awesome menu key. I don't remember if that keyboard had the F keys but I FN need those keys. Without having a volume keys and being able to delete tabs when you're not using them and other such stuff the FN keys are useful.
I enjoy a numpad keyboard because its nice to change the Camera in the viewpoint using it inside the Unreal engine, and Blender. this video was exactly what i needed thank you so much Hipyo!
I signed up for the waitlist because of this video! I don't typically use the numpad at home, but I use it all day at work... so absurdly nice work keyboard incoming!
So... personally I use the Royal Kludge RK100 which is like a 98% or something, it's essentially a 100% but looks more like a smaller board. It would be nice if there were more options for this market as I think a lot of gamers like the look of the smaller boards but also like having all the "F" keys, Num pad, and the arrow keys. I'd love for you to build one so I could see what a nice one sounds like :)
honestly, I like the more compact format with no exploded keys at all but retains a 2u. Yeah, super specific. I can live without the F row but because of my work, numbers entry is a frequent event.
Keyboards with numpad (also arrow keys, home, prsc, etc) on the left side are the superior design if you want those keys but don't want it eating up mouse space. THE DSI left-handed keyboard is a good example of the design. Unfortunately there's not many keyboards that use that design. P.S. I don't understand the point of removing function keys from a keyboard since there's no benefit to having extra desk space in that spot anyway
I would absolutely love that board, in fact it seems the perfect format for my use. Just wish there were a, 'budget', version of this since there is no way I can afford to spend half the price of my current computer on a keyboard, and then gods a mouse.
This is an interesting layout. My lovely free and trash picked desk is very narrow/not that deep so an F row is out of the question. But keeping the numpad for data entry sounds awesome. I’ll still probably stick to 60% and 65% because I don’t do much data entry at home but this has opened a world of possibilities
You, Glarses, and Switch and Click are to blame for me now owning an RK98 in blue with red switches. I needed the numpad, since my gaming rig doubles as the family PC.
Numpad!! I love Nola helping out! I use a $40 Havit keyboard when I travel for work. I would like to see an upgrade video on one of those, or even an upgrade video on a standalone numpad would be appreciated. I really enjoy your videos, thank you.
I use a keyboard with numpad at home(-office) and without numpad at the office (the one with the keypad doesn't fit in my backpack) - so I've gotten used to not having the keypad all the time, but I still regularly try to use it when it's not there. Having a keypad is definitely a plus for me, but more importantly there's a couple of the function keys (F2, F5, F6 and F12) that I need and use multiple times daily. I'm ok with them being behind a FN key, but any more convoluted than that is just a no-go.
So, after watching a few of your videos, as well as a few others, my cat knocked my cheap keyboard to the floor one too many times and I needed a new keyboard. I couldn't afford anything fancy, my budget was basically $40 and even that was hard to pull off just because I'm on a very low fixed income. Anyway, after reading a lot of reviews, feeling like I needed to get something mechanical and that it had to be hot swappable...I found one for $35. It has Gateron optical blacks (I do some gaming so I wanted something that would be good for that)..and OMG, the difference between this and the cheap crappy membrane ones I had used in the past is just night and day. I find myself typing a lot faster with this. It feels a lot smoother, the sound is pretty awesome (to me anyway, I'm sure plenty of folks could find faults in it)...not sure I'm a fan of the pudding keycaps it came with or not, but knowing I can change those if/when I can afford it is nice. I know I will be limited to optical switches if I want to change those up, but I really like how these ones feel and sound so I won't be getting the itch to try any others anytime soon at least...so yeah, just wanted to say thank you for helping motivate me to take the risk on a mechanical board, even if it is a budget Tezarre K61
Oh, and I don't miss the num pad, but I do miss the arrow keys a bit. I just couldn't find one I liked, had the features I wanted, and was in my very tight budget that had them included (or not one with decent reviews that I didn't feel like I'd need to make changes to almost immediately, which I can't afford to do). I'll adjust the the smaller layout, and my cat likes the extra room she has since my keyboard takes up less space now. This one is also much heavier, so she won't be able to knock it on the floor as easily so that's a bonus!
I personally opted for the new Keychron Q5 Pro (96%) because I use both the F row and Numpad when I work from home. Went for Akko Piano switches and electrical tape mod for maximum thockiness.
Definitely more Nola content. She does need to inspect everything beforehand, right? I think I might miss the function key row, but then again, maybe not? I definitely use numpad more than the function keys.
4:28 This is why I don't do much with keyboard modding: I have two cats. The little one would eat up Dark Tangerines like they were LITERAL tangerines, too. I don't feel like going through the litter box sifting for switches, you feel me?
I switched to a 65% around a year ago and don't miss the numpad nearly as much as I thought I would... I do, however, miss the F row. This is why I ordered the Asus ROG Azoth a couple days ago.
I contend that the numpad is important for people like me who are old, or for people who trained on Excel usage with old people like me. My next keyboard is gonna be the super cool Keychron Q1 Pro because that's my price point, and I'll probably love it despite not having a numpad because at least it will have arrow keys. When I was playing a computer game today on a Corsais K70 Pro Mini that I'm about to return, I learned that my bare minimum is arrow keys, and a numpad is **REALLY** convenient.
I personally feel that the numpad is essencial on a keyboard, but the F row is almost just as important, so either with this keyboard or one with the F row but without numpad, i would feel like something is missing anyway. Glad mine has both haha.
Noah is great, love seeing her. As for the keyboard - it sounds great and looks cool, but my ideal keyboard would have not just the F-Key row, but two F-Key rows, plus even more macro keys on the left, almost like half a numpad on the left, with a full numpad on the right. Throw in a little touch screen, knob and media keys. I'm not a minimalist, I'm a maximalist.
having scroll through taobao, an interesting thing I found is that the 69% layout (and yes they actually classify it as that) is actually decently common at least in the asia market (or at least not as rare as it seems). Though it is slightly smaller than the one in this video (basically a 40% with a number row and numpad)
I am a numpad person. I did however get a separate mechanical numpad and a 75% keyboard and much prefer the freedom of being able to move it around easy on the left side.

that's the problem, larger keyboard means more material means more manufacturing equals more cost

Have you considered the keychron q6? It's not as premium as the windx98, but pretty nice nonetheless.
I love my epomaker th96, it’s not huge and has a numpad, knob, and can be wired or wireless bt/2.4ghz
I love the segments with Nola. Much chaotic evil energy. Never stop pls.

Yes to Nola segments! 🥰
Numpad!! I love Nola helping out! I use a $40 Havit keyboard when I travel for work. I would like to see an upgrade video on one of those, or even an upgrade video on a standalone numpad would be appreciated. I really enjoy your videos, thank you.
Pretty neat board layout but I prefer the 1800 layout so i still have function keys. Love the color scheme you went with!
Nola is lovely and numpads are essential for me. Love the size of this layout. Not gigantic, but not TKL!
If anyone is curious, its called a "mini 1800". The full sized just also having a numrow.
I like the Southpaw layout (numpad on the left) for art programs.
Yours is a full sized keyboard?
@@Mewcaloid not quite, It's compact but doesnt have some keys. Idk the size name though
You should try the kit adam
Noah is great, love seeing her. As for the keyboard - it sounds great and looks cool, but my ideal keyboard would have not just the F-Key row, but two F-Key rows, plus even more macro keys on the left, almost like half a numpad on the left, with a full numpad on the right. Throw in a little touch screen, knob and media keys. I'm not a minimalist, I'm a maximalist.
I love Nola :) And this is the layout I've been looking for! I don't care about the f row, but want the num pad, so, perfect
Would love a video on numpad keyboards sometime!
Would also love to keep seeing Nola being a cute gremlin
Love Nola! I'm totally happy without the F row if I have a num pad.
having scroll through taobao, an interesting thing I found is that the 69% layout (and yes they actually classify it as that) is actually decently common at least in the asia market (or at least not as rare as it seems). Though it is slightly smaller than the one in this video (basically a 40% with a number row and numpad)
I am a numpad person. I did however get a separate mechanical numpad and a 75% keyboard and much prefer the freedom of being able to move it around easy on the left side.
I like this layout more than the original Cypher. Extra column wider but full size 0 and room for Delete. Need more budget F-rowless boards!
I just came here. And I already love Nola. So I automatically love all Nola content. 10/10. Very enjoyable
