  • Every time I go to Japan I keep an eye out for any vintage toys from X-Bomber (Star Fleet to the rest of the world) and each time I come home with nothing as what I did see was way out of my budget. That was until this last trip when I came across a rather battered Big Dai-X toy from Takatoku (possibly).
This guy was well played with, missing the 'X' on his face and one of the missile fists, but I had to have him, and I knew I would be able to fix him up. Join me today as I get this rare vintage toy ready to go on display.

Takutoku would have been the manufacturer of the toy, and Dynamic Planning would be the copyright owners, as that is the company the creator of the series, Go Nagai, owns.
    Hope that helps!

I watched this series as a little kid in the early 80’s. Was terrified but i loved it. Remembered it all my life but couldnt find anything about it untill youtube, and aftera while it was released on dvd, including a cd of the music. Now as an adult i bought them both. No toys of StarFleet though, so thanks for this😊

Well in the Uk it used to be shown on Saturday mornings in the early 80s. And at the time it was truly stunning. We in the UK had not seen much in the way of Japanese tv or cartoons at that time. The only other thing was Battle of the Planets. So Starfleet as it was called here is about these evil space aliens in huge ships, attacking earth. They have bionic augmentation on limbs and faces etc and insect looking ships and soldiers. Then the flagship of earth is called the X Bomber, a huge ship that can fire x ray style death beams and is a heavily armoured and armed cruiser. One of its extra weapons is a giant robo mech that he is repairing in this video. Its stored on the ship and each of the crew pilot a different section on away missions as fighters etc. Then it can all form up together into the giant robot to kick the crap out of the bad guys. Its utterly bonkers Japanese anime standard stuff for them. But for us in the Uk, we had never seen anything like it. Think Captain Scarlet on steroids. Its also really grim, dark and gritty, with characters going through hell, getting killed and other weird stuff going on, like Ghost ships and mysterious alien women, interwoven with bits of Japanese legends and made using highly detailed models, hand puppets etc. Its story is gripping, the characters are interesting and the action and violence etc is non stop. Its one of the coolest shows for kids I have ever seen. And it pulls no punches. Its worth seeing even now....

Thanks for introducing me to Starfleet. I started watching the episodes on UA-cam and they are incredible. The ship and character designs are awesome and the "puppets" look great for 19080's [practical effects. Oh, and great toy videos too!

You are not kidding. Its amazing to look at even today. At the time it had a huge cult following in England, as we had not seen anything like it before. It was shown before videos were mainstream and the internet etc, so no one in the UK had seen much Anime or how weird their tv and cartoons can be. In Japan it would have been lost in the background as this sort of thing was common place to them and their shops and tv were full of stuff like it. But in England it was unique, the only thing close to it had been the Gerry Anderson Captain Scarlet / Thunderbirds stuff etc....

Awesome. I was on holiday once with my parents in Italy and these toys were pretty common. I was lucky enough to get an X-Bomber toy (in red for some reason) and a much larger Dia-X. The Dia-X was terrible, it didn't split into three parts but instead transformed into a space-ship thing that looked like nothing from the show whatsoever. All my toys are long gone now, and I never had this one, but it was great to see this blast from the past.

I think it would be wonderful for viewers and for you if you started building and selling "repaire kits"
You can have difefrent sized kits for different prices and also for different uses.
They should include some paints, various colours, brushes, glue, file, pin tool, small saw, plastic weld, and of course stireen sheets. You can sell them optimized for certain toy lines so say have a star wars figure kit that includes lego pieces used for head repairs etc.
I think you could sell them for quite a lot. Many of us would pay a large premium to take the guess work out of what to buy. I know that I don't repair most of my toys because I don't have the stuff I need not because I don't think I could do it. Going to the multiple stores and tracking down what I need to get started is the intimidating part. Please consider this Dave. You can make money and you can help many of us improve our collections. If you don't think it will be worth the trouble, then figure out what you would need to charge to make it worthwhile and charge that. For most people the price won't be the obstacle and really for starter kits we will only need very small amounts of everything so you can save money that way.
This will be win win for you and for us.

It's a nice idea and something I have thought about. But the logistics and time to do something like that are just not possible for me to take on. I know I'm probably asking a dumb question, but for parts you only have reference photos for, like the face's X. Wouldn't it be easier blowing the picture up to the same size as the toy. As in, you hold the toy against the computer screen, adjusting the picture to be the same size as the toy, and then measure the dimensions of the item needs?
