I've been wondering why you hadn't started using an airbrush, and I must say that I love the answer. Thank you for making the added effort so fans and other collectors can more easily replicate your amazing tutorials!
I watch a lot of other repair channels and spend most of my time thinking 'I don't have that tool' or 'I can't afford that tool'. With Toy Polloi I want everyone to feel they can have a go. Using everyday items, or simple techniques you can still get great results.
@@toypolloi That's a fair enough point but if you're using 35quid paint I'd make the investment. If you used an airbrush and explained that a brush could also be used to similar effect I don't think be put out by that.
When the styrene and plastic weld comes out you know that something special is gonna happen. Absolutely amazing work on that battery compartment cover. Mind blown again.
one of the things that was so new and fresh about Star Wars in 1977 was that the sets, props, droids, etc. were not pristine but very wabi-sab (unlike most sci-fi up to that point)i; so this type of restoration is appropriate imo
Watching you fashion body panels for R2 I'm reminded of the great British coachbuilders and you don't even need an English Wheel. Beautiful work, Dave.
'Doesn't look too bad' - he says. By your own high standards Dave that is exceptional👏👏👏. Heaven help the next owner when they try and retro-bright that battery cover 🤣🤣
That handmade battery cover, wow. Amazing. I could watch you at work all day long and fortunately I actually can as there are years of videos. I wish I had 10% of your creativity and skill.
Top notch as always Dave. I really do enjoy videos like this. Where you brake out the fabrication skills. Definitely one of the main things about you videos that caught my attention. Once again, Top Notch Dave. Thanks again for all you do.
Another impressive Wabi-Sabi restoration, from Dave. If only this R2-D2 had gotten to Dave earlier, I'm sure even his electronics could have been saved.
Fantastic! You are a model builder at heart, especially with all the scratch building! I like how you enjoy the toy for what it is and not making it factory fresh! Another job well done
You can also polish the chrome finish with a soft piece of cloth, go gently first and then a bit harder. It will get rid of most of those brush strokes and make it look a lot more like a mirror. Great job!
I have a palitoy talking R2 D2 and the dome needed a refresh paint job so I went to the chrome pen, it is okay but I want a finish like the mirror paint gave, so I think I am going to order some. Thanks for showing the paint you use.
Despite what you say about the whole airbrush thing, I’ve seen someone use the Molotow in an airbrush, and then a clear coat on top of it, which resulted in probably the best chrome I think I’ve ever seen, also durable because of the clear coat which it wasn’t affected by at all. Certainly worth it.
It's always so inspiring and relaxing to watch you work your magic. Ingenious use of those styrene sheets and I'm grateful you've introduced me to plastic weld. Works well in my repairs, too. Thanks for the great video!
While the other channels show you how to de-yellow a toy, Toy Polloi shows you how to yellow a toy! I love it! :-D I wonder if you could fit RC tank parts (motors & lights) into this; it would be a challenge to fit in, but modern controls would be a huge step up over what originally came in this toy (if it was working). Might not be worth it unless you happened to have an old broken RC tank lying around! In any event, this is a phenomenal trash-to-treasure transformation and one of the most impressive videos you've ever done - and you just keep getting better. Great work!!!
WOW, you did a fantastic job on this one, that battery cover turned out amazing esspecially after that masterful paint job, chrome mirror did a good job, like you said not perfect but that level of shine fits well with the wabi sabi nature of that R2, very fun watch!!
Remarkable as always Dave, also I do appreciate the fact, that you work with what you can get at a reasonable price, the mirror paint is a little pricey but still reasonable, thanks again Dave, cheers!
It is expensive, but I can see me using this on a few more projects. So hopefully I will get my monies worth out of it. The rest of this fix I would class as pretty much free. Just my time.
Those little motors in the legs are the same ones used in 80s slot cars. I remember having to clean out the hair and fuzz twisted up inside so the cars would run smoothly.
Airbrush setups are quite affordable nowadays - you can get all-in-one setups with a portable compressor for under 60 Australian Dollars (just under the price of one bottle of Culture Hustle Mirror paint!!) - though I get where you're coming from, seeing as I'm a hand painter too. XP It's always great seeing the "anyone can do this" thinking in action!
I know the movies do not all connect by the original design... But I like the idea of R2 having a red "eye," back in '77 similar to C3-P0's eyes in The Rise of Skywalker.
I definitely appreciate you don't use an airbrush so anyone can try your methods. You inspired me to fix a Joyride Halo Marine's broken arm and it worked! He looks good as new and even better he still has full range of motion in his arm! Thank you for all you do!
Have a look at makeup airbrush. It came with a small pump all included. I actually use this myself as I don't do many airbrush customs. It was indeed cheap (relative to real air brushes) and is actually very handy. It was something in the 30 pound range. Luminess air is the one I got about 4 years ago, but I see you get many more now a days. Just for info.
just a quick thought about matching the yellowing , have you ever used tea , a certain well known green coloured super markets own decaff tea bags leave a lot of tannin in the cup
I do believe those motors are replaceable, looks like the same motors in those little race cars,Tyco I believe they were called. It’s like those little slot cars, on a track. And there’s really nothing to those motors, I’m sure you can clean it up and get it going again. Good luck.
Usually with 'chrome effect' paints they tend to work best over a gloss black finish. Might be worth an experiment with a tin of gloss black from Halfords? I like the look of the unlit LED through the red eye, it looks like R2 does when Kenny Baker is inside.
The motors and electronics are salvageable and can be restored (there are several UA-cam channels featuring how to restore miniature motors and electronics...)

@@toypolloi It would be interesting to watch you scratch build or kit bash a toy because you definitely have the skills to do it...
Dave watching you work on things like this is like watching a wizard. That battery cover is simply amazing
Thanks. No wizardry, just some tinkering and guesswork 🤣
@@toypolloi it is an amazing job. It looks like you bought a vintage replacement.
When the styrene and plastic weld comes out you know that something special is gonna happen. Absolutely amazing work on that battery compartment cover. Mind blown again.
your skills to recreate missing parts with a mere sheet of styrene never ceases to impress me!
Thanks. This was a fun project.
@@toypolloi and it shows in your videos: you have lots of fun making them :)
I’ve never been more impressed by a battery cover
That battery cover is a thing of beauty.

The cover looks great Dave
Am sure people tell you this all the time but Dave your a genius you’re restoration skills are unmatched
That Mirror Paint looks fantastic for covering large areas! Thanks Dave!
Watching you fashion body panels for R2 I'm reminded of the great British coachbuilders and you don't even need an English Wheel. Beautiful work, Dave.
Love the attention to the heroic R2-D2,as always you make something out of what somebody tossed out. I love it. I
Simply stunning, that dome, then the custom battery cover. Awesome, awesome job. Legend.
That chrome paint does a wonderful job. Better than the liquid chrome pen would have. Great job!
Honestly, the dark gunmetal dome without the chrome actually looks really cool. It makes it look like an Imperial astromech droid.
You Sir are a Master of your craft.👌😎
Wow!! That mirror paint is amazing and you never fail to impress with your styrene skills. That battery cover looks stellar. Phenomenal Job, Dave!😃👍
Thank you! Cheers!
That battery cover is amazing! Very impressed with your growing fabrication and paint mixing skills. You pulled this off with flair, my friend!
Awesome job Dave, 8 year old me always wanted an RC R2, so glad he has a good home 😁
You are an absolute maestro with paint matching! 😄
Thank you! Cheers!
@@toypolloi You're welcome my friend!

I'm very impressed with that battery cover. I wouldn't have been able to tell that it was made from scratch
i love watching the chroming. its satisfying like watching sand blasting.
Honestly, I think it’s way cooler to have a scratch built cover that blends in that well
These videos are so therapeutic.... great job
Glad you think so!
your paint job honestly looks better than the original. great job!
Wow, thanks!
I love these vids.... gives me so many ideas for customs ..... Tony heart eat your heart out lol
You did an excellent job on the dome. It’s looks just like the one I had as a kid.
I've been looking forward to this one since you teased the new chrome solution a while back.
R2 looks great!
Top notch as always Dave. I really do enjoy videos like this. Where you brake out the fabrication skills. Definitely one of the main things about you videos that caught my attention. Once again, Top Notch Dave. Thanks again for all you do.
Glad you enjoyed it
The skill and time you take to make accurate fixes is wonderful. 37 minutes just flew by. As always, well done!
Artoo looks 110% better. Thanks Dave.

I think the brush strokes in the silver paint makes it look incredibly accurate, having seen the real R2D2 he has sort of a brushed aluminum look.
I have a palitoy talking R2 D2 and the dome needed a refresh paint job so I went to the chrome pen, it is okay but I want a finish like the mirror paint gave, so I think I am going to order some. Thanks for showing the paint you use.
You did a really nice job. I know how hard it is to make something like that back panel. My choice was to paint the whole thing and weather it.
Despite what you say about the whole airbrush thing, I’ve seen someone use the Molotow in an airbrush, and then a clear coat on top of it, which resulted in probably the best chrome I think I’ve ever seen, also durable because of the clear coat which it wasn’t affected by at all. Looks brilliant Dave. Love that weathered panel.
Thanks 👍
Another wonderful restoration. I particularly enjoy watching you scratch-build replacement parts! That weathering job on the battery panel is amazing.
Thank you very much!

Thanks for the great video!
Great restoration!
Was waiting for retrobrite, but was really wowed by the yellowing effect. Nice!

I had this as a kid, mine had a fault, the head span round all the time,
but god did I love this toy

lovely job as usual. Enjoyed this fix.

Another wonderful video. Was kinda hoping to see the electronics work as well.
Impressive, most impressive!
I bet that Mirror paint would look amazing if applied with an airbrush.
Great work as always thanks for inspiration!!!!

Great fix indeed, this would have been perfect for custom Death Star plans
Alclad has a really good chrome paint as well.
I know the movies do not all connect by the original design... But I like the idea of R2 having a red "eye," back in '77 similar to C3-P0's eyes in The Rise of Skywalker.
Hi Dave, Maybe try some 00 steel wool between silver coats? It should take away some of the heavier brush marks before painting again.
Good idea
This one would fun to customize it into a different R2 unit. Like a black death star one.
I definitely appreciate you don't use an airbrush so anyone can try your methods. You inspired me to fix a Joyride Halo Marine's broken arm and it worked! He looks good as new and even better he still has full range of motion in his arm! Thank you for all you do!
I’ve always wondered why you didn’t prime the pieces you make first before you paint them wouldn’t that help with the paint streaks
That is some pricey paint! It looks amazing though. The silver I have is quite mediocre. Given I paid $4 for it at a Hobby Lobby. Awesome restoration!
Good paint job. Airbrushing is a lot of work and hard to master. I can't so I don't. Just remember you can't clean that bit up years later. 😄
Wow amazing job as always...
Looks fantastic 👍🏽
Thanks 👍
I’m curious if this paint could be polished with a car polish? Glad to see you try this product out, I’ve been hoping you would
You can use pledge furniture polish to coat your silver.

Thanks for the info

Not this paint. The recommended just use it straight. Cheers
The motors and electronics are salvageable and can be restored (there are several UA-cam channels featuring how to restore miniature motors and electronics...)
If you wanted a blackened dome R2 it would be a challenge to make it as cool as that damage. So odd a happening too.
Wabi-Sabi 👍

He said he doesn't airbrush because he wants to demonstrate techniques that anyone can try.
