You are such an honest photographer, I’m deeply grateful to have come across your channel. I was mortified this week because I got the chance to photograph with models and I had NO STUDIO! That thought started flowing into “what if my camera isn’t good enough”or “how am I gonna make these look cool and different” blah blah blah. Unproductive thoughts! I also really like the advice to find clients that are at the same “level” and realising that just because you can’t charge the same as a full professional doesn’t mean you can’t make some money. And this is also a spiral - once you start having an income with photography gear will (literally) pay for itself

Love that you are sharing your honest experience! A lot of Photographers don't really share this level of experience. I am also a self taught Photographer and spend my own time training myself. Thank you for being open, it's very helpful and being confident and trusting oneself is always the solution to get out of our own way. You Rock! :)
I will be the first to admit that even this early on, I was starting to fall into the Gear Acquisition Syndrom for sure, but the only thing I ended up doing was swapping my APS-C body for a full frame (because my hobby aspect is night street photography, and my camera really wasn't holding up for the shots I was trying to take)
But I fully understand that was a want more than a need!
Now I run my 35mm + 85mm primes and all in the pursuit of starting a portrait/lifestyle photography business, I finished my second shoot with another model last week and I have another lined up for next week to get my portfolio underway!
You have also inspired me to try more self portraiture to experiment with my style, my first studio flash arrived today so that will be an on going theme for the next few months!

I think a full-frame is a must! And more with the night street photography requirements. It's super easy to fall into the Gear Acquisition Syndrome... We all become a bit "geeky" about gear and we always want more and more... 😅
Good choices with the lenses for lifestyle and portrait! the 35mm is sooooo versatile on a full-frame and the 85mm is spot on for portrait photography! 👌🏼
Also, well done with your photoshoots. Building a portfolio is the most important step before start approaching potential clients. A portfolio is our best introduction as a photographer.

Laura, you are a Godsent! This video is for me, and I put my learning on hold for the past few years (and now a baby arrived to my life). I was on the other, extreme side of spectrum - I lived in Canada for 5 years and spent a LOT of money on my...well, a hobby. I even purchased studio lights and stands and some backdrops, always thinking I needed more. But I never spent time to learn to use what I already have. But this video put a lot of things into perspective, it's time to take a step back, take a deep breath and go back to where I departed. Subscribed!

I have everything including 2 body's and Canon L- Lenses. So really expensive gear.
But by collecting all that gear I forgot to learn how to properly use it.🤦♂️

I know how to do this, I just see so many others doing things that make me feel like I need to buy better gear, get a studio, get the perfect filter, get ..... Technically speaking I’ve hit my 1yr mark of being a photographer and I feel like I didn’t do as much as I wanted or could have done if it wasn’t for my mindset. Don’t have good gear, people are better, equipment, etc… definitely will watch again to get a better understanding but this was definitely a stress reliever

Been binging these videos. Ur really good at this. I have an A7C w/ 50mm 1.8, 24mm 2.8, and 16-35 f/4 pz. I also have the 28-60mm kit lens, but that's going to get sold. I love the idea of street and architectural photography, but my dream with photos is mock ups for products. Got the cam for filming after selling my fs5 ii for $800 😩 and my 18-105mm lens for $100 😩😩 (returning from Vegas and Erie very much defeated) because I needed the money badly. I got rid of gear people would kill for, but I'm over it. Grabbing this camera, these lenses, and junking out on UA-cam has put the spark in me that school couldn't. Learning from limitations is a true statement btw. Keep being great. Need this videos for morale rn. 🥞❤️

Your attitude is great. Some really good advice too. I like the idea of approaching new, small brands to offer some free photography to build a portfolio. That seems a lot less scary than asking for money when I don't even know if I can do it!
