The camera work in addition to the physical work that you guys do is amazing to me. It's really nice watching a young couple get along and work so hard and so well together and still find time to do fun things that aren't work. Great channel guys!

Look at how you guys have evolved since then.. how your land has become so much more prosperous. How you've evolved as a couple.. how your filmography has evolved. It's kind of amazing. I started watching around this time and I've really forgotten how far you've really come. I'm not sure why this was in my newsfeed, but, it was fun to watch.

For the bees, keep the bottom two levels for brood. Between the second and third boxes put a queen separator. So the queen stays in the bottom 2 boxes with the brood and she's not up in the 3rd level laying brood with the honeycombs. It will be nicer and cleaner when harvesting the honey. You won't have larva in the honey when you harvest it.
Who needs a gym!! you've got a garden and it's looking mighty fine....one thing about it, you guys are not afraid of work...great video.

A great way to protect your plants and critters is building a partial underground greenhouse or berm greenhouses. A third option is building a larger greenhouse over your existing greenhouses and put your compost material in it to provide a heat source during cooler months to extend the season.
It's amazing how much work you both get done. I am always amazed at the progress you get done with the smoker, canning...literally everything ! I love your channel !!!

Great to see you using no till. I am an urban no dig guy, and what happens with the beds is awesome. I plant much more closely than I did before going no till. It creates a shade mulch that reduces the need for watering, and doesn’t effect the size of the produce negatively. In fact the peppers and tomatoes are larger than normal.
I see you unloading dirt, gravel and other things from your trailer by hand. If you use a sheet of ply wood with ratchet straps hooked under it at the front with the straps under it and hanging out the back you can pull it off with a tractor or pickup. We hooked ours to the bucket of the tractor with the ratchet end and pulled it off. We then lifted the plywood, the dirt slides off and piles itself, you can then move it where you want. Again we used our tractor.
Definitely tucking away this little nugget of knowledge.
But I don't have a tractor!
trafferazabu then use your brain just a bit! Back the trailer up to a tree and tie the straps hooked to the plywood then pull the trailer out from under it. It’s not rocket science and if your using the excuse of not having a tractor then your not willing to do the work anyways. Very few things in life are easy but nothing in life has to be hard if you just use the brain god gave ya!!
Just quit making excuses and just do it !
Edit: this was directed at chuck who was complaining that he did not have a tractor so I apologize for it going to someone with a positive attitude and someone that will put the original info to good use

This was the first video I ever watch of yours, all of those years ago. My wife and I are playing to move back to Alaska, and until then I’m going to try and learn what I can about gardening here. I’m going to use what you did here to turn this old dead piece of land back to life. I’m excited to try

If you have a lumber mill nearby, you can also get the sawdust to put down between the rows along with your straw.
Aged chicken manure is very good for gardens. I never put my horses manure, even aged on my garden. Did spread it out on the natural grass and weeds elsewhere thinly and it did green them up.But if it works, it works.
No till has historically required the removal of compaction before the 'no-till' part... so don't sweat it! Great job!
Ironically we tilled to have a no till garden. I wasn't about to hand dig 1,000 sq feet and I won't do the next 1,000 next year 😂 slowly turning most of my humongous front yard into no till garden.

True, Since I started the terrace vegetable garden, I am feeling really relaxed and i take care of my plants like they are my child.
The Honda FC 600 is one of the best tilling/easiest to operate tillers you can use, but only if you use it properly! The front wheel has a spring latch and must be raised for tilling, lowered for transport only, NOT WHILE YOU TILL! You'll love it once you learn how to use it.

For what ever the reason I had a good feeling about this new channel and several years later they have yet to disappoint me. I don't know exactly what it is that makes this channel so special for me. UA-cam for microbes and fungi. Your own compost tea with microbes and fungi from healthy gardens and huge trees and shrub is an excellent start for your new garden. Great video.

I have a small place, only 4 acres, mostly woods, the best thing I ever bought was a small (23HP) 4 wheel drive tractor with a front end loader, I have a tiller, bush hog and belly mower to fit the tractor as well. In your location a tiller and a front end loader would handle everything you need. If you ever have a tractor with a front end loader you will never be without one again.
Watching the two of you work really makes me want to be young again. Thanks 😘 for sharing your story and experience.

Tip, the front wheel on the Honda cultivator is for transport. Notch it upwards when tilling.
You make it look easy and enjoyable but I know it is a lot of work and you are doing such a great job figuring things out.
you might get some weeds from horse manure, the chickens should of processed it first, you guys are staying busy, summer is short, good job!

One more ingredient that is a must for the Lasagna method is worms. As many as you can get. rescue them from the bait shops Nightcrawlers and red wigglers.
Next time you get unscreened topsoil, maybe you can try this... Park a wheelbarrow underneath your open tailgate, and use a rake to move the dirt from the bed onto the metal grate of the tailgate. The dirt will fall into the wheelbarrow, and the larger rocks will be caught. Now it's screened topsoil 😝🙃😉 might be too wet to work, but it's an idea.

It looks so good, you guys!! Danny and I both groaned when we heard "70 yards" -- !!! No gym membership needed. Love the "lasagna method", it's pretty much what we do. How exciting. Our peas are going great, beets and carrots need thinning, arugula, chard and lettuce are taking off like rockets, tomatoes and peppers are looking good, and we are (late) just planting our beans. We are planting black beans, cranberry beans and yin-yang beans -- all are a first for us! Happy gardening.

When the time comes to buy an abandoned home (plan on fixing one up to live in), while we're building up the house, I'll set down a crap ton of hay where I want plots, and so by the time I move in I'll have a functioning garden.

Ah, you guys. I literally came back to watch this again, Aug 6th, 2020. You inspire me want to be better at homesteading, and I cannot believe I'm even saying this...but I actually feel like adding Alaska to my bucket list of places to visit (brrr, we get cold...but not THAT cold, ha!). You remind me to appreciate winter and all its glory...but these garden posts...and the canning and the food...ugh, I cannot get enough of your routine! (I remember now how I found you, I was browsing pickled egg recipes and 'poof' there you were!!! ...now I'm hooked!

In the fall make your rows tall. I make my rows 4 to 6 feet high and load them up with hot manurers I get the soil cooking at around 140 to 165 degrees and that kills off most of the weed seeds, Then when winter starts I cover the piles with a tarp that I have stabbed a bunch of times with the pitchfork and then let it cook. When it snows everything is white except the rows. Some mornings, there is a bit of fog over the rows but by next spring the soil temp is down in the low 70s to upper 60s and is time to start planting.

a section of chain link fence on a an angle. You can just throw the dirt off the truck onto the fence to remove the large rocks. or shovel it onto your expanded metal trailer and that is a finer screen.
I drive a concrete mixer. After we wash out the trucks at night there the leftover gravel that is perfect and usually FREEEEEEE!. Look into seeing if you can get some for your yard. It’s high in calcium so it stops weeds and will help you with the mud hole you have in the springtime. You really need a skid steer or tractor 🚜. Oh my god my body hurts watching you work!
